<p>Obesity is emerging as a serious health issue in the state of Gujarat, with every fourth person being overweight according to the official data. 

Further, the state health department statistics say that the obesity rate in the state is 22.6 per cent among women and 19.9 per cent among men. 23 out of 100 men and 20 out of 100 women in Gujarat are obese. 

And overall, nearly 22 lakh people in the age group 15-49 are suffering from obesity. 

Medical professionals also report a 10 per cent rise in the number of people seeking obesity treatment, with most patients in the 30-45 age group and the majority of them being women.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>

Gujarat ranks among the top 10 states in India that are witnessing a rise in obesity. 

In 2021, the states with the highest obesity prevalence were Puducherry, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Other states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab also have high figures, particularly for abdominal obesity, with prevalence rates around 60% for women in some cases. 

And within gujarat, four major districts like Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Gandhinagar top the list when it comes to obesity. 

Health experts believe urban populations and younger generations are more affected because it is linked to sedentary lifestyles, increased consumption of fast food and restaurant meals, and higher family incomes.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>

Doctors warn that excess weight can lead to serious health risks, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and even cancer. 

Obesity is determined by the Body Mass Index (BMI), which calculates weight in relation to height. 

Health experts urge citizens to monitor their BMI, maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and adopt healthier lifestyles to curb the rising trend.

The state is addressing this by implementing initiatives like the "Healthy Gujarat, Obesity-Free Gujarat" campaign and opening the state's first obesity clinic to combat the growing public health concern. 

Recently this week, the Gujarat State Yoga Board also announced a large-scale initiative aimed at tackling obesity across the state.

<p>A 16-year-old boy in the Kasaragod district of Kerala was sexually assaulted by at least 15 people he met on a dating app, police said. In connection with the case, 9 people have been arrested, including an Assistant Educational Officer and a Railway Protection Force member.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police said that some accused are absconding, including 46-year-old local IUML leader Vadakkumbattu Siraj. According to Kasaragod district Superintendent of Police Vijay Bharath Reddy, the minor boy met the accused persons on a dating app.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>“He had met people who were above 18 years of age. A person who joins the app has to give a self-declaration that he is above the age of 18. The boy has his own mobile phone with an internet connection and downloaded the app. There seems to be no parental control in his mobile use. He made the self-declaration that he is above the age of 18, and he has been exploited for the last two years,” said the SP, India Express reported.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The officer added that 14 cases have been registered by the cops in connection with the case. Out of those cases, six have been transferred to Kannur and Kozhikode districts for investigation. The eight other cases, which are being investigated in Kasaragod, have a total of 10 accused persons.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police said the matter came to light after the mother of the boy discovered behavioural changes in her son and began suspecting something unusual. Later, she informed the state’s child protection helpline, following which the minor boy was given psychological counselling.</p><h3>Minor has been assaulted for more than two years</h3><p>According to NDTV, police chief Vijaya Bharat Reddy also said that the boy is in Class 10 student and it appears he downloaded the two years ago. He added that the boy is being suspected to have being assaulted for more than two years by these men in Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Ernakulam.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>"The assaults allegedly took place at the boy's home and in various locations across the other districts. The case came to light after the boy's mother grew suspicious when she saw a man fleeing their home upon her arrival. When she questioned her son, he revealed what had been happening. The mother immediately contacted a child helpline, which then alerted the police," Reddy said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Based on the boy’s testimony, police have filed 14 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, against 16 people, aged between 25 and 51. Officials also confirmed that one of the accused works with the railways.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Investigators are additionally examining the app involved, which included features for self-reporting and age verification, to determine whether regulatory lapses enabled the minor’s sexual exploitation.</p>

The core issue appears to be that India’s social security system (mainly managed by the EPFO, or Employee Provident Fund Organisation) is not considered equivalent to the US social security model in terms of structure and guarantees, making negotiations complex. Indian workers remain the largest group affected by the absence of such a pact. Do Indian workers in the US get their social security benefits paid to them? Yes, but it happens only to those who stay long enough. Non-Green Card holders can receive US Social Security payouts abroad only if they have worked in the US for at least 10 years and meet other eligibility criteria. But since most Indian tech professionals leave well before that threshold, this exception helps very few. This, in essence, makes Indian tech workers involuntary contributors to the US retirement system, with no reciprocal benefits. For a country like India, where social security structures are still evolving and returnee professionals often face reintegration challenges, this represents a serious policy blind spot. The bottom line: India and the US must enter into a totalisation agreement This has been a long-standing demand. A totalisation pact can prevent double payroll taxation, allow contribution credits to be totalised (combined across countries), and create pathways for payouts or refunds for returning Indian citizens. Until then, billions of dollars from Indian techies will continue to disappear into a system that gives them nothing in return.
