The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students` Union (JNUSU) on Saturday termed the Delhi Police`s investigation in the JNU violence case as `fraud and bogus`.

"We are here to talk about Delhi Police`s press conference, which appeared like a press conference of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). It seemed like the police were reading a paper by ABVP. We want to say that the Delhi Police`s did a "fraud and bogus" investigation," said a member of JNUSU in a press conference here.

The JNUSU alleged that both administration and police are complicit in the attack on the varsity`s students.

"It was cleared by videos and investigation by several media organisations that ABVP was involved in the violence.

Police and administration are complicit in it. Lies and fake images and videos are being spread. It was a planned conspiracy to threaten JNU," the JNUSU activist said.

The Delhi Police Crime Branch investigating the case of violence in JNU on Friday had released photographs of nine suspects, including JNU Students Union (JNUSU) President Aishe Ghosh.

Police had said that no suspect had been detained yet but the process of interrogation of suspects would begin soon.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced that four airports in the country have managed a transition from level 1 to level 2 with a reduction in the carbon emissions by grading their systems as per the Airports Council International (ACI).

The airports had adopted the grading system in 2018 and successfully implemented the carbon emission plan.

"Four AAI airports Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata; Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar; Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi and Trivandrum International Airport have met all the necessary requirements to upgrade to level 2: 'reduction', by constituting Carbon Management Plan and reducing the carbon emissions at airports as per the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Program," said AAI in a press statement on Wednesday.

As per the data provided for the CO2 emission of four years 2015,16,17,18; these airports witnessed a decrease in emission despite an increase in air traffic.

The grading system of ACI has four categories - mapping, reduction, optimization, and neutrality.

"Carbon mapping occurs when the airport has a policy commitment to emissions reduction and development of a Carbon Footprint for the airport's scope-1 and scope-2 emissions, which are under its control. Carbon reduction occurs when the airport shows the reduction in carbon emissions as compared to the base year," added AAI.

Both the Northern and Western borders with China and Pakistan respectively require equal attention presently, and it is in that context that the rebalancing is taking place, said Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane on Saturday.

"We have perspective plans and we continuously monitor and evaluate the likely threats and challenges which are going to develop. At one point in time, it was more towards the western front, but we feel now that both the western and northern fronts are equally important, and it is in that context that the rebalancing is taking place," the Army Chief said.

Speaking on Army's preparedness for a two-front war, Naravane said, "In case of threat from both fronts, there'll be a primary and secondary front. Wherever there is a primary front, we'll deploy the bulk of forces. On the secondary front, we'll ensure we aren't found wanting. That's why we've dual front task forces''.

A special court has dismissed the application filed by AgustaWestland alleged 'middleman' Christian Michel seeking an inquiry into the visit of Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials in Tihar jail to meet him without court's permission.

Judge Arvind Kumar while dismissing the plea, observed that "I do not find any illegality on the part of ED and CBI officials who visited Tihar Jail. The application filed by accused Christian James Michel is without any merit and is thus dismissed".

Christian Michel is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail in connection with Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal.

While the CBI is probing his alleged role as a 'middleman' in the deal, the ED is investigating money laundering charges against him.

Michel had moved the court seeking inquiry to be conducted into the entry of agency officials into the jail without seeking prior permission from the court.

He alleged that the agency officials searched his belongings during the visit of a British counsellor in Tihar on October 22.

On the contentions, the court had earlier directed the jail authorities to submit a report regarding their visit.

Christian Michel's counsel, advocate Aljo K Joseph, had earlier stated that "as per Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963, as and when consular access is requested and consular officers shall be free to communicate with nationals of the sending State and to have access to them."

"It is informed by the family of Christian James Michel that during the visit by consular, the ED and CBI officials tried to interfere with the process and checked article and books send by the family," he asserted.

The counsels appearing for the agencies, however, submitted that the officials went there on the Ministry of External Affairs' direction.

The US State Department has said that India will not get a blanket waiver on its purchase of S-400 missiles from Russia.

The statement comes after reports suggested India will receive a blanket waiver.

The US official insisted that there is no country-specific blanket waiver for such a major defence purchase instead there will be a "case-by-case analysis" on the sanctions mandated under the US legislation.

The statement also suggested that sanctions under countering America’s adversaries through the sanctions act known as Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act(CAATSA) could be applied.

CAATSA imposes sanctions on nations engaging in “significant transactions” defined as any purchase above $15 million with the Russian state-owned defense industry.

However, the statement also added that the Trump administration does not want to make a decision that degrades the defence capabilities of India. The US had recognised India as a "major defence partner" in 2016.

New Delhi had announced its plans to purchase Russia’s S-400 missile systems back in 2015. The $5.43 billion worth S-400 contract was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India last year.

The US had earlier said it was "very upset" about Turkey's purchase of Russian missile defence systems and could impose sanctions on Ankara if it does not "get rid" of them.

The head of Turkey's Defence Industry Directorate had said last year that a second S-400 delivery to Turkey may be delayed beyond a planned 2020 timeline by talks on technology sharing and joint production.

After the Erdgoan regime brough the missile system from Russia, Washington removed Turkey from the F-35 programme, in which Ankara was a manufacturer and buyer.

The S-400 is the most advanced long-range air defense missile system that had gone into serive in Russia in 2007.

The defence system is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles, and can also be used against ground installations.

The S-400 can engage targets at a distance of 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km.

After the Supreme Court on Friday directed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to review the restrictive orders imposed in the Union Territory within a week, Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Friday questioned Home Minister Amit Shah, asking what was the 'emergency' behind imposing Section 144 on August 4, 2019, and said that it cannot be used to 'suppress' the freedom of speech.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, Sibal said, "I want to ask the Home Minister (Amit Shah) that what was the emergency on August 4? You cannot use Section 144 to suppress freedom of speech. I want to tell the Home Minister, the government that if it will listen to the voice of people, it will always remain in governance."

The top court while hearing the petitions challenging restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir stated that the right to access the internet is a fundamental right under Article 19 of the Constitution of India.

"Today the Supreme Court has given a historic verdict in the matter of Jammu and Kashmir, the citizens of the country were worried that the people do not know about the situation in Kashmir. No one was able to get out of the house, there was no communication, that is why we had filed a petition and stated that Section 144 should be reviewed," said Sibal.

"The court has clearly stated that whatever order regarding the imposition of Section 144, the Jammu and Kashmir administration should put in the public domain so that people can challenge it if they want to. Moreover, the decision to suspend internet services cannot be made for an indefinite time," he added.

The top court said that Kashmir has seen a lot of violence and that it will try to maintain a balance between human rights and freedoms with the issue of security.
It also directed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to review the restrictive orders imposed in the region within a week. "The citizens should be provided highest security and liberty,' the apex court said.

The top court made observations and issued directions while pronouncing the verdict on a number of petitions challenging the restrictions and internet blockade imposed in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in August last year.

The Supreme Court had on November 27 reserved the judgment on a batch of petitions challenging restrictions imposed on communication, media and telephone services in Jammu and Kashmir pursuant to revocation of Article 370.

The court heard the petitions filed by various petitioners including Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kashmir Times editor Anuradha Bhasin.
.
The petitions were filed after the central government scrapped Article 370 in August and bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Following this, phone lines and the internet were blocked in the region. The government had, however, contended that it has progressively eased restrictions.

Speaking about the delegation of 15 foreign envoys, who are on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Sibal took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and raised a question about his 'attachment' with the foreigners.
