Security of American and Israeli diplomatic and trade interests, personnel and installations like embassies, offices and other residential areas have been beefed up across India after inputs were received from security agencies in the wake of rising tensions between the United States and Iran over the killing of a senior Iranian general.

According to two communications sent by Intelligence Bureau (IB) on January 4 and 8 to various government agencies, the steps have been taken after the developments pertaining to the attack on US Embassy in Baghdad on December 31, 2019, and the US airstrike which killed senior Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad on January 3.

According to a communication accessed by ANI, the threat of retaliation given by the Iranian leadership requires appropriate measures to secure the 'US as well as Israeli diplomatic and trade interests/personnel/installations.'

The IB, keeping Ministry of Home Affairs in the loop, has asked for appropriate measures to secure such locations and installations.
The communication also states that terrorist attacks on the US as well as Israeli installations and personnel as protests, demonstrations and vandalism at such locations cannot be ruled out.

The diplomatic security forces, which are mainly responsible for the safety in Delhi's embassies, have been asked to continue patrolling the region, spread almost eight kilometres.

The local police and extra forces have been deployed at such locations as per the threat perception.

The Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar on Thursday said that a group of 15 foreign envoys have arrived in Srinagar for a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. He was addressing the weekly press conference.

The envoys represented the United States, South Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Maldives, Morocco, Fiji, Norway, Philippines, Argentina, Peru, Niger, Nigeria, Togo, and Guyana.

Surprisingly, no envoy was representing the Russian Federation, considering their firm stance which respects the issue as being an internal affair of India.

This is the second visit of foreign dignitaries to Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. In October 2019, 23 Members of European Parliament had landed in Srinagar on a two-day visit to examine the situation on the ground.

Unlike the last visit, there was no representation from Europe, to maintain the group in such a way that it was both manageable as well as diverse.

When asked about this, Raveesh Kumar replied saying that "We wanted this group to be of manageable size and make it broad-based representing different geographical regions. When we approached them they welcomed the decision. Our understanding is that they wanted to visit in a group. You're aware, on many issues they take group position. The invitation wasn't sent to all members because it would have made the delegation too big."

The envoys would involve themselves in meetings with security officials to get a sense of security situation in J&K, and also the threat posed by terrorism in maintaining peace. The spokesperson said that the "objective of the visit was the envoys to see first hand the efforts which have been made by government's to normalise the situation."

In other news, questions were also being raised regarding the situation in West Asia. The spokesperson reassured that India's position on the US-Iranian tensions was to maintain a prolonged peace and continued security, in efforts to stabilise the region, which considering its socioeconomic value is very important to India.

The United States has in the past permitted the operation of Chabahar port in Iran, which was jointly developed by India. The port connects India to Afghanistan via Iran and therefore plays an important role in improving the war-torn region's stability.

India is all set to take around 15 foreign envoys to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. India is all set to take around 15 foreign envoys to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. Confirming the development, a source told WION, "a group of 15 envoys based in Delhi are being taken to the UT of Jammu and Kashmir on 9-10 January to see first-hand the efforts being made by the government to bring the situation to normal." WION first broke the story on Tuesday evening with the dates of the visit. The ministry of external affairs had been receiving requests from envoys for a visit to Kashmir and the government source said, "Our consistent position has been that we may consider the request only after analyzing the security situation and checking the on-ground situation with the J&K Administration". While envoys of Latin America, ASEAN and Africa will be going, envoys of the European Union are expected to go on a later date. One EU envoy to WION on why they could not attend foreign envoy's Kashmir visit said, "It was communicated with very short notice and the majority of us need to get the agreement of our authorities." adding, "In any case, we are still discussing with MEA" Government sources said that EU envoys have welcomed the initiative by the government and select EU envoys were invited since the aim was to keep the group broad-based. Asked, if any envoy had asked to meet anyone detained, the government source said, "no specific request was made and the group was free to interact with people subject to security considerations" Australia is not able to be part of foreign envoy's Kashmir visit since they are preparing for the Aussie FM's India visit. Same stands true for another Asian country, whose delegation is in the town. The visit by foreign envoys comes even as criticisms over India keeping the region cut off. Kashmir woke up to a new year of freedom on January 1 as SMS services were restored across the valley from midnight on Tuesday, i.e. on December 31. The news is being seen as a welcome measure in restoring freedoms for the Kashmiris as normalcy returns gradually in the valley. Earlier on October 14, postpaid mobile services were also restored. Last October, India took the European Union Parliamentarians to the union territory of Kashmir. It was the first such visit by an international delegation post-abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. The visit by the members of the European Parliament had come at a time when the Centre was making efforts to restore normalcy in the region.

Amid heightened tension between Iran and the United States in the aftermath of the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, Iran`s Ambassador to India Ali Chegeni on Wednesday said that Tehran is "not looking for war".

Amid heightened tension between Iran and the United States in the aftermath of the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, Iran`s Ambassador to India Ali Chegeni on Wednesday said that Tehran is "not looking for war". "We are not looking for war. We are living in this region peacefully with our brothers and sisters including India. We don`t want any tension or escalation in this region," Chegeni told media persons in Delhi on Wednesday. Soleimani, the head of Iran`s Revolutionary Guards` elite Quds Force, was killed in a US drone strike ordered by President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport in Iraq last Friday. Soleimani's death resulted in dramatic escalation in tension between the US and Iran. The tension between the two countries has been on the rise since Trump unilaterally decided to withdraw Washington from the 2015 nuclear pact the world powers had struck with Tehran. Iran today fired several missiles at two Iraqi bases housing US troops in retaliation for the American strike. Responding to a question related to today`s airstrike, the ambassador said: "Whatever we have done is a part of our response." "Millions of people who participated in the funeral of General Qasem Soleimani had demanded the government for it. We have done it. We are not looking for war," he said. The envoy further said that India is a part of the region and therefore Tehran will welcome any initiative to curb the escalation of tension by its "good friends."

The Indian government has approved funding of 55.6 billion rupees ($774 million) for a natural gas pipeline in its northeast, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Wednesday, as part of a national gas grid being built to span remote locations.

The Indian government has approved funding of 55.6 billion rupees ($774 million) for a natural gas pipeline in its northeast, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Wednesday, as part of a national gas grid being built to span remote locations. India aims to spend up to $60 billion by 2024 to set up the grid and several terminals for liquefied natural gas, as it scrambles to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2030 target of a 15% share for natural gas in the energy mix, up from 6.5% now. The 1,656-km (1,029-mile) pipeline will cost up to 92.65 billion rupees to build. "The government will provide 60% viability gap funding of the project cost," Pradhan told a conference in the capital, New Delhi, adding, "It will be 5,559 crores," or the equivalent of 55.6 billion rupees. The gas grid linking eight states in a region bordering Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and Myanmar, is expected to be complete by 2023. Despite the plan, the growth of gas consumption eased to 2.5% in fiscal 2018/19 from 11% in 2009/10, mainly because of a lack of infrastructure. "India is ready to face challenges from the current geopolitical issues in the Middle East," Pradhan said, referring to the escalation of tension between the United States and Iran. Iranian forces fired missiles at military bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq on Wednesday in retaliation for the U.S. killing of an Iranian general, raising concerns of a wider war in the Middle East. The Middle East accounts for about two-thirds of India's annual imports of crude, and Iraq is its top oil supplier. "India's foreign ministry has already spoken to oil-producing nations (on the potential threat to supplies)," Pradhan said, without elaborating.
