Avalanche At Gandhi Sarovar In Kedarnath
An avalanche was reported over Gandhi Sarovar in Kedarnath in northern Indian hilly state of Uttarakhand on Sunday (Jun 30). A video of the horrifying incident has gone viral on the internet. News agency PTI reported that no loss of life or property was reported from the site but more details are awaited.
Rudraprayag senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr Vishakha Ashok Bhadane told news agency ANI that the avalanche happened at 5 am.
“There was an avalanche from above Gandhi Sarovar in Kedarnath at around 5 am today. There was no loss of life or property,” he was quoted as saying.
Kedarnath is home to the revered temple dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva and an important pilgrimage site as part of the Char Dham circuit. Kedarnath is also revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India.

Every month, Kedarnath witnesses a massive number of devotees thronging the holy site. In just 28 days after May 10, a whopping 710,698 pilgrims made it to the temple, as per local administration.
The state administration of Uttarakhand has made it compulsory for all pilgrims to get registered for the Chardham Yatra.
As per the Uttarakhand Chief MinisterPushkar Dhami, better road access and more infrastructural development is the reason why the number of pilgrims visiting Kedarnath every year has been rising drastically.
"Due to the development of roads, air traffic and other infrastructure facilities, twice as many pilgrims have come to the state as compared to last year for the Chardham Yatra. While a total of 19 lakh pilgrims came to Kedarnath last year, 10 lakh pilgrims have come so far this year," the chief minister said.
Notably, the Char Dham circuit consists of four holy sites: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Pilgrimage across all four sites generally peaks during summer breaks, when better access is available to these snow-clad sites.
