SCAM! Men lured through dating apps being forced to pay massive bills

A dating scam has been reported from Mumbai where a woman approaches men, takes them to a bar, orders drinks and food and the bill then runs into thousands. What's the scam here?Activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj posted about it on X, stating how men are lured through dating apps and taken to one particular restaurant, where they are overcharged and threatened.
The Godfather Club, a high-end restaurant in Mumbai's Andheri West, finds itself in the middle of the controversy. Dating apps like Tinder and Bumble are used to trap unsuspecting men who end up paying between Rs 20,000 ($238.62) to Rs 61,000 ($727.8) at the restaurant.
The scam has claimed 12 victims till now. “MUMBAI DATING SCAM EXPOSE. THE GODFATHER CLUB ANDHERI WEST. BRAZEN SCAMMING EVERYDAY. 12 victims in touch. Trap laid through Tinder, Bumble. Bill amounts 23K- 61K. 3 men trapped by the same girl,” she wrote.
She also shared bills showing exorbitant amounts being charged for regular items. One of the bills totals up to Rs 61,743 ($736) and includes two cocktails priced at ₹5,000 each.
The “modus operandi" involved reaching out to the men through dating apps. Women connect with men and set up a place and time to meet. It normally starts off from a place like Pizza Express or Metro. However, things quickly escalate and they go to a bar, in this case, Godfather.

Drinks, food and hookah are ordered without showing the menu card to the men. Everything is charged at exorbitant rates and so the bill goes into thousands quickly. The woman then leaves the place.

If the men refuse to pay the bill, bouncers threaten them and beat them up.
A nationwide dating app scam
Reports suggest that the Godfather Club is not the club indulging in such practices. There seems to be a network of pubs cheating unsuspecting men. These pubs reportedly employ public relations personnel who hire women to trap and loot the men.
The post has received several comments, with some people also sharing how this is a common occurrence across the country. Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad have also seen such incidents in the past. In June, a victim in Delhi ended up with a staggering bill of Rs 1.2 lakh at a popular joint.
