Terrorists targeted a non-local driver in the southern region of Kashmir on Monday (Apr 8) evening. The assailants fired upon the driver hailing from Delhi in Shopian district, a senior police official confirmed to media outlets.

As per initial reports, the driver sustained two gunshots and was rushed to the hospital for treatment and was subsequently referred to a medical facility in Srinagar for advanced medical care. As per the local reports, the area was cordoned off by authorities and a search operation was launched to nab the terrorists involved in the attack.

In prompt action after the attack, all entry and exit points of nearby areas in Jammu and Kashmir were sealed by security forces and a massive cordon and search operation was launched. Further details are awaited.

Security has been tightened in the area. The attack comes at a time when around 10 days are left for the first phase of polling in the general elections. Voting will be held in the Udhampur constituency of the Jammu region in the first phase on April 19, while in Srinagar polling will be held on May 13 in the fourth phase.
