Flying officer Bhawana Kanth has become the first woman fighter pilot to be qualified to undertake missions by day on a fighter aircraft, news agency ANI reported.

She completed the day operational syllabus on MiG-21 Bison aircraft on Wednesday.

Kanth had joined fighter squadron in 2017 and flew her first solo on MiG-21 Bison in Mar 2018 from Ambala Air Force Station. The sortie was flown for about 30 minutes.

Flying officer Avani Chaturvedi was the first woman IAF pilot to go solo.

Kanth hails from Darbhanga, Bihar and was born and brought up in Begusarai.

Bhawana, Avani and Mohana Singh were commissioned as flying officers into the fighter stream after basic training in June 2016 on "an experimental basis" for five years initially.
