Apple has warned some iPhone users of a potential "mercenary spyware attack" that aims to remotely compromise their devices. A threat notification mail on July 10 informs users in India and 97 other countries of Pegasus-type attacks. Apple said, "Mercenary spyware attacks, such as those using Pegasus from the NSO Group, are exceptionally rare and vastly more sophisticated than regular cybercriminal activity or consumer malware."
This is the second time that such a warning has been issued by Apple in India. An Apple blog states that journalists, activists, politicians and diplomats are often the key target of such attacks.
The mail notification also stated that these attacks “cost millions of dollars and are individually deployed against a very small number of people, but the targeting is ongoing and global”. Apple had earlier informed users that these mercenary attacks have a short life span and are hard to detect.
"The extreme cost, sophistication, and worldwide nature make mercenary spyware attacks some of the most advanced digital threats in existence today. As a result, Apple does not attribute the attacks or the notice you’re receiving to any specific attackers or geographical regions," the notification said.
"The company relies solely on internal threat-intelligence information and investigations to detect such attacks," it added.

Political flare-ups have happened in the past owing to these threats. Several opposition leaders, activists and journalists accused the government of spying on them throughspyware. The Pegasus matter has also reached the Supreme Court in the past.
Notably, former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter, Iltija Mufti, who is also a founder of Samruddha Bharat Foundation, shared on X that she had received a threat notification from Apple about her device being possibly hacked. She also shared screenshots of Apple’s notification.
Cybersecurity agency Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In) has identified numerous vulnerabilities in Apple’s operating systems for iPhones and iPads.
