Veteran music composer Khayyam critical in ICU: Report

Veteran music director-composer Khayyam is reportedly critical as he is currently admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sujay Hospital. 

Best known for contributing to the timeless classic pieces in films ‘Kabhie Kabhie’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’, Khayyam is a well-known musician who is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan.

According to BN Tiwari, president of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees Union, Khayyam is suffering from an infection in the lungs. 

Khayyam’s real name is Mohammed Zahur 'Khayyam' Hashmi who adopted his middle name for the stage. He began his career in music from the city of Ludhiana at the age of 17. He got his first big break in the industry via 'Umrao Jaan' through which he made a space for his style of lyrics and music. 

He has also won a National Award, a Filmfare Award, besides a few other tributes for his work. 

Khayyam is also loved by his fans for his non-film songs like 'Paaon padun tore shyam,' 'Brij mein laut chalo' and 'Ghazab kiya tere vaade pe aitbaar kiya'. He also gave music for late Meena Kumari's album, 'I Write, I Recite' featuring 'nazms' (poems) sung by her.
