South Africa has dealt a major blow ahead of the series decider in Cape Town as their ace pacer Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the third Test with a groin injury. The hosts have not named his replacement. The right-arm pacer left the field midway through the fourth over in the first session on day four of the second Test, indicating his untimely exit from the squad for the remainder of the match. Returning to red-ball cricket for the first time in over three years, Nortje featured in the first Test in Durban, leading the pace attack in Kagiso Rabada’s absence. He bowled 40 overs in that match and picked up two wickets in both innings. Coming off well from the first Test, Nortje retained his place in the XI for the second Test despite Rabada’s anticipated return, but suffered a blow, leaving Proteas a bowler short for the rest of the match. South Africa, however, got the job done without him and won the rain-hit match at St George's Park in Gqeberha by an innings and 31 runs. Also read| IPL 2027: Kieron Pollard replaces Jayawardene as new head coach of Mumbai Indians In Nortje’s absence, South Africa has three pacers to choose from, including Gerald Coetzee, who has not played a Test in nearly two years, all-rounder Corbin Bosch and local hero Dane Paterson. Should they choose to pick a spinner instead, South Africa have Senuran Muthusamy waiting in the wings for his chance. Should they choose to pick a spinner instead, South Africa have Senuran Muthusamy waiting in the wings for his chance. The hosts are expected to retain the rest of the players for the final Test, which starts on Tuesday (Oct 27). Bavuma Shines in Gqeberha Test Captain Temba Bavuma led from the front, reviving South Africa’s early collapse in the first innings. India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer is closing in on breaking former skipper Rohit Sharma's record as India gear up to face New Zealand in the second T20I at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday (Oct 24). Iyer has been in superb T20I form lately, scoring his maiden hundred in the format against the West Indies in the series opener earlier this month. Even against New Zealand in the 1st T20I, the right-hander scored a match-winning 42 off 28 balls, helping India complete their highest T20I run chase. Iyer has a chance to surpass Rohit to become India’s T20I captain with the most runs in a calendar year. Since taking over the captaincy in the shortest format from Suryakumar Yadav just after IPL 2026, Iyer has led India in 22 T20I matches, scoring 632 runs. For him to go past his former India captain and veteran Rohit, Iyer needs to score 25 more. Rohit scored 656 runs in 29 T20Is in 2022 as the captain. Also read| KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan score ducks as India A fold for 113 against NZ A However, Pakistan’s talismanic batter Babar Azam leads the list for scoring 939 runs in 29 matches as a T20I captain in 2021, the same year in which he led Pakistan’s most famous run chase against India in the T20 World Cup in Dubai. A listless batting performance by India A on day one of the first unofficial Test against New Zealand A brought back familiar batting blues. Test openers KL Rahul (0) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (17), alongside Sai Sudharsan (0) and captain Dhruv Jurel (1), failed to leave a mark in Lincoln as the visitors were skittled out for just 113 in the first innings. Uncapped Yash Rathod top-scored with an unbeaten 44, while in-form Devdutt Padikkal scored a gritty 32 off 77 balls batting at number three. The hosts won the toss and asked India A to bat first, with Rahul departing inside the first 15 minutes for an eight-ball duck, caught behind off Fraser Sheat. The two left-handers, Jaiswal and Padikkal, added 30 runs for the second wicket before Jaiswal was caught for 17 from 45 deliveries. Also read| IND vs NZ: Kumar Kushagra named as cover for Ishan Kishan in India’s T20I squad Sai Sudharsan, who was making his comeback to red-ball cricket after being left out of the recent Sri Lanka tour due to a hamstring injury, was dismissed for a 13-ball duck before the hosts sent back India A captain Jurel on 1. To make things worse, another Test regular and all-rounder, Washington Sundar, was the third batter to depart for a duck, leaving India A in all sorts of trouble. Vidarbha batter Rathod stood tall at one end, striking boundaries to keep India A afloat in the first innings. However, with no support from the other end, as the wickets kept tumbling, Rathod remained unbeaten for 44, but India A were all out for just 113 in 39.3 overs. WATCH India A Fall of Wickets -

India A skittled for 113 on Day 1 of 1st unofficial Test vs NZ A in Lincoln. KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan score ducks as Simon Keene takes 5/24.

Padikkal, who looked comfortable in these challenging conditions, departed soon after, with India A reeling at 56 for five inside 29 overs.

India T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer said the 'pitch got easier in the second innings' as they chased down a 226-run target in the first match of the five-T20I series on Thursday (Oct 22) in Christchurch. India won the match by four wickets as they reached the target in 19.4 overs. Captain Iyer scored a 28-ball 42 as Naman Dhir, playing his first overseas T20I, kept his composure and hit an unbeaten 15-ball 42 to take the team through. Apart from them, Sanju Samson (67 off 33) and Abhishek Sharma (29 off 12) gave India a flying start, adding 93 runs in 5.5 overs for the first wicket before Sharma was dismissed by Michael Bracewell.
Iyer reveals how India chased down 226-run target
"When we started bowling I thought it was playing a bit slower," Iyer said while talking to the host broadcaster after the win. "The ball was holding a bit and we bowled a little ahead [fuller] compared to the hard lengths we should have been hitting. But as soon as the game progressed, we saw the dew coming in and the wicket was getting flatter as the ball was skidding through and coming onto the bat pretty well."Also Read - Harry Brook’s 202 goes in vain as Sri Lanka pull off second-highest ODI chaseIyer also gave the same logic as to why New Zealand were able to score 225 and said: "That's how they got the momentum and they reached 220.
