The Trump government has started firing several hundred Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees, just weeks after a fatal mid-air collision at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.&nbsp;
In a statement, David Spero, who is the president of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists union, said that in a late-night email on Friday, the probationary workers were notified that they had been fired.&nbsp;

Spero said that the employees were fired "without cause nor based on performance or conduct," and the emails were "from an 'exec order' Microsoft email address" &mdash; not a government email address.&nbsp;
Sean Duffy, who is the Transportation Secretary, said Monday in a post on X that "the FAA alone has a staggering 45,000 employees. Less than 400 were let go, and they were all probationary, meaning they had been hired less than a year ago. Zero air traffic controllers and critical safety personnel were let go."&nbsp;

The head of the Catholic Church was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital on Friday with bronchitis, the latest of a series of health issues in recent years.
In a statement earlier Monday, the Vatican said tests had confirmed "a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract that has led to a further change in treatment".
"All the tests carried out until now are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require adequate hospitalisation," it said.
In an early evening update, it said his clinical condition was unchanged, he continued to be fever-free and was continuing the unspecified treatment.
"This morning he received the Eucharist and subsequently dedicated himself to some work and reading texts," the update said.
"Pope&nbsp;Francis is touched by the numerous messages of affection and closeness he continues to receive," it added.
After initially cancelling events through Monday, the Vatican said the&nbsp;pope's weekly Wednesday audience would not go ahead either.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni had earlier told reporters that the&nbsp;pope&nbsp;was in "good humour", had rested well overnight, had eaten breakfast and read the newspapers.
A source in the&nbsp;pope's entourage had also insisted there was no alarm within the Vatican.
Francis was admitted after a "very busy" two weeks, during which "he was weakened", the source told AFP, but added: "There is no alarmism."
A Vatican source told AFP the&nbsp;pope&nbsp;was receiving oxygen.
Yet the news of the more complex situation raises fresh concerns about the Argentine pontiff, who has suffered increasing health issues in recent years.
Difficulty breathing&nbsp;
In the days before his admission, Francis had admitted to difficulty breathing and had asked aides several times to read his speeches aloud on his behalf.
At his weekly general audience last Wednesday, he said he "cannot yet" read his own speeches, adding with a smile: "I hope that next time I can."
But he had continued taking meetings, including one with the prime minister of Slovakia on Friday morning, shortly before he headed to hospital.
Francis had part of one of his lungs removed as a young man and has been particularly susceptible to respiratory infections.
He pulled out of a Good Friday event last year after catching what the Vatican called a "light flu", but went on to lead Easter services as planned.
A year earlier, in March 2023, Francis was admitted to hospital for three nights with bronchitis, which was cured with antibiotics.
The&nbsp;pope&nbsp;also underwent a hernia operation in June 2023 and in 2021 underwent surgery for a type of diverticulitis, an inflammation of pockets that develop in the lining of the intestine.
He has been using a wheelchair since 2022 because of persistent knee pain and uses a cane during rare moments standing up.
Francis has also fallen a couple of times in the past few months, bruising his forearm in January and sporting a large bruise on his right jaw in December, caused by toppling from his bed.

According to an aviation expert, strong winds and icy weather may have caused the plane, which was arriving from Minnesota, to flip over after landing.
Following a weekend snowstorm, that brought 22cm of snow at the Toronto Airport, officials issued a warning stating that they were working to clear the icy runway to ensure safe takeoffs and landings.

Mexico on Monday (Feb 17) warned Google that it was prepared to take legal action against the tech giant if it insists on renaming the "Gulf of Mexico" as the "Gulf of America" for US-based Maps users.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, speaking at her daily press briefing, said that her government has once again reiterated its opposition to the change in a letter to Google.

<h2>Mexico's argument against the name change</h2>
Sheinbaum said that Mexico has written to Google, arguing that US President Donald Trump's executive order on the matter only applies to the US portion of the continental shelf. &nbsp;
"Google has no right to rename Mexico's continental shelf, nor does it have any right to rename Cuba's continental shelf, because the Gulf of Mexico is divided among the three countries," she declared.&nbsp;
The letter, she added, makes it clear that "under no circumstances does Mexico accept the renaming of any geographic area that includes part of its national territory and that is under its jurisdiction". &nbsp;
"We will wait for Google's response and, if not, we will proceed in court," added the Mexico president added, doubling down on a threat she first made previously.

The dispute follows Trump's executive order, signed shortly after his January 20 inauguration, directing US federal agencies and businesses to adopt the term "Gulf of America."
His administration's Interior Department announced on January 24, 2025, that it has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.&nbsp;
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mocked Trump by suggesting to call the United States "Mexican America," pointing to an older map before one-third of her country was seized by the US in 1848. &nbsp;

Falling in line with Trump's order, Google in a blog post on February 10, 2025, announced that it was changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' for those using its Maps application in the United States.
"People using Maps in the U.S. will see 'Gulf of America,' and people in Mexico will see 'Gulf of Mexico.' Everyone else will see both names," wrote the tech giant.

Mexico threatens Google with legal action for renaming Gulf of Mexico

A Delta Air Lines plane carrying 80 passengers crashed while landing and flipped at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday (February 17), officials said. Stunning visuals showed the plane lying upside-down on the snow-covered tarmac.&nbsp;
Eighteen passengers were taken to hospitals as the emergency crews working at the site rushed to the site when the dramatic incident happened. As per Peel Regional Paramedic Services, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.&nbsp;
