Brazil's Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro to stand trial on charges of plotting a coup after failing to win re-election in 2022.
The trial will be the first of an ex-leader accused of attempting to take power by force since the start of Brazil's transition from dictatorship to democracy in 1985.
If convicted the 70-year-old former army captain, who had nurtured hopes of making a comeback in elections scheduled for next year, risks a jail term of over 40 years.
Bolsonaro, who served a single term from 2019-2022, is accused of leading a "criminal organization" that conspired to keep him in power regardless of the outcome of the 2022 election.
He lost to veteran left-winger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by a razor-thin margin.
Investigators say that after his defeat the coup plotters planned to issue a decree calling for new elections.
The investigators say the plotters also planned to have Lula, his vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes -- a Bolsonaro arch-foe and one of the judges in the current case -- assassinated.
A five-judge panel of the Supreme court voted unanimously to put Bolsonaro on trial.
Moraes, who has called Bolsonaro a "dictator," was the first judge to give his findings in the hearing, which was broadcast live on Brazilian TV.
Bolsonaro will be the second Brazilian ex-president in under a decade to face a criminal trial.
In July 2017, then ex-president Lula was found guilty of corruption.&nbsp;
He spent a year-and-a-half in prison but later had his conviction annulled by the Supreme Court and went on to win back the top office.
<h2>'Persecution'</h2>
Bolsonaro is charged with attempting a "coup d'etat," the "attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law" and "armed criminal organization."
The prosecution says the alleged plot did not come to fruition due to a lack of support from the army high command.
Seven other people will be tried alongside Bolsonaro, including several of his former ministers and a former navy commander.
The former president insists he is the victim of a political ploy aimed at barring his return to the presidency.
"This is the largest political-judicial persecution in the history of Brazil," he said in a statement Tuesday.
"The referee has blown the whistle before the match even began," he added later on social media platform X.
He had sought in vain to have three judges, including Moraes, removed from the case.

American Oversight, the non-profit organisation, and a watchdog group filed a lawsuit against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
&ldquo;The Federal Records Act requires federal officials to preserve communications related to official government business,&rdquo; the nonprofit American Oversight wrote in the lawsuit, obtained by the Daily Beast.

The case has been randomly assigned to Boasberg, who serves on the US District Court for Washington, DC.&nbsp;
However, it gathered criticism from other Senators as Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., condemned "rogue judges" like Boasberg in a statement to Fox News Digital.&nbsp;
"These judges have proven they care more about unlawfully knee-capping President Trump's agenda than accurately applying the facts to the law in each individual case. Congress can change that," he said.

Moreover, the lawsuit by American Oversight notes that Signal group chats can be set up to delete messages after a certain time threshold, leading to the possibility that certain records were illegally destroyed.
<h2>Why is he MAGA's least favourite?</h2>
Boasberg has come under the limelight recently after he rejected the Trump administration&rsquo;s request to dismiss a previous order he had issued barring the administration from deporting immigrants under one of Trump&rsquo;s executive orders.&nbsp;
The Judge also suggested that the administration may have violated his order by sending migrants to El Salvador despite the ruling.
Earlier this month, Trump called for the impeachment of Chief Judge James Boasberg, &nbsp;who leads the federal court in Washington, DC.&nbsp;
Boasberg ruled in favour of Democracy Forward and the ACLU, who had challenged the deportations. In his decision, he said the removals could cause "irreparable" harm.&nbsp;

In a sharp turn of events on Tuesday, the boy's 59-year-old grandfather, Philippe Vedovini, and his wife were arrested on suspicion of voluntary homicide and concealment of a corpse, said Aix-en-Provence public prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon.
Two adult children of the couple were also arrested, Blachon added.
Tuesday's arrests were the result of fact-finding "over recent months", the prosecutor told reporters. &nbsp;&nbsp;
Earlier this month investigators had returned to the village, sparking talk of a development in the case.
A large flowerpot with traces of blood had been seized by the investigators in front of a local church, a source close to the case told AFP.
<h2>'Quiet neighbours'&nbsp;</h2>
Several years ago the boy's grandfather had been questioned over alleged violence and sexual assault at a private school in the 1990s where he was a scout leader.
Police had initially considered his possible involvement in Emile's death as only one of many hypotheses.
"Perhaps what is happening is not what we had expected," said Philippe Vedovini's lawyer, Isabelle Colombani, when questioned by police in Marseille.&nbsp;
But she added that "being placed in police custody means nothing."
Julien Pinelli, who represents Emile's grandmother, Anne Vedovini, said that she wanted nothing more than to learn "the truth about this tragedy."
"And if this measure is necessary to find the truth, of course she will submit to it," he said.
In the southern village of La Bouilladisse, an AFP reporter saw police conduct a search of the couple's main home, an affluent farmhouse. They have seized an SUV and a horse trailer.
One of the neighbours, who did not wish to give his name, saw the police detain Vedovini, who is an osteopath, and his wife at 7 am in the morning.
"For me, they're quiet neighbours," he said. "They've been under pressure for the past two years, that's for sure. They have lived in a reclusive manner."

Emile was last seen walking alone on a street in Le Vernet, 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) up in the French Alps, in the late afternoon of July 8, 2023. He was wearing a yellow T-shirt, white shorts and tiny hiking shoes.&nbsp;
A massive search failed to find any sign of the boy.
Nine months later, a walker discovered his skull and teeth 1.7 kilometres (1.1 miles) from the village.
Police later found more bones and items of the boy's clothing.
In February, a traditional Catholic funeral mass for the toddler was held in the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, a UNESCO-listed medieval Gothic cathedral said to house relics of Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus Christ.
Several hundred mourners were in attendance.
Emile's grandparents and parents are devout Catholics.
Within hours of the ceremony, the grandparents published a statement saying "the period of silence must yield to the period of truth."&nbsp;

The court was told that the pair initially planned to split the earnings from the pornographic content. It also heard that Rixon became aware of the girl&rsquo;s true age five months into the scheme, but despite that, she continued filming and distributing the sexually explicit content.
During Monday&rsquo;s (Mar 24) hearing, prosecutor Joanne Daniels detailed how the victim later alerted Merseyside Police, reporting that Rixon had &ldquo;numerous indecent photographs and videos of her&rdquo; and was actively selling them online.&nbsp;
A police investigation led to Rixon&rsquo;s arrest in August 2024. The police found that she had in her possession 43 category A images, 11 category B, and 119 category C. A portion of these images had been distributed through WhatsApp, though there was no evidence of their sale on OnlyFans.

<h2>Sentencing</h2>
In court, it was suggested Rixon could have faced a six-year prison sentence. However, Judge Neil Flewitt KC confirmed that she would not serve an immediate custodial term.
Defence lawyer Lloyd Morgan argued that Rixon, who had already spent time in custody for breaching bail conditions, had shown &ldquo;difference in her attitude and behaviour, a realisation perhaps&rdquo;.&nbsp;
&ldquo;If there is any such thing as a standard type case, this certainly is not it,&rdquo; he said, adding, &ldquo;These are two vulnerable girls, both agreeing for them (the content) to be distributed for some financial gain.&rdquo;

Judge Flewitt acknowledged the complexities of the case, noting that although the victim consented to the acts, the law exists to protect the minor in such situations. He stated that Rixon had likely been exploited and made little financial gain.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The overwhelming likelihood is that you were being exploited, both of you, by somebody else, but it is not clear who that is,&rdquo; noted the judge, sentencing her to a two-year suspended sentence for two years.
Additionally, Rixon was handed a 12-month drug rehabilitation order and a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement. She must also sign the sex offenders&rsquo; register and abide by a sexual harm prevention order for the next ten years.&nbsp;

During a grilling by the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said the matter was &ldquo;still under review,&rdquo; without answering whether she was in the chat group or not.
The lawsuit said Rubio &ldquo;is aware of the violations&rdquo; and &ldquo;responsible for initiating an investigation through the Attorney General for the recovery of records or other redress,&rdquo; as per the HuffPost report.&nbsp;
