US' Maryland reports the first case of flesh-eating screwworm parasite; the patient had travelled from Guatemala. The outbreak is escalating to northward from Central America and southern Mexico. The disease can turn fatal if left untreated. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the case.
“We found out via other routes and then had to go to CDC to tell us what was going on. They weren’t forthcoming at all. They turned it back over to the state to confirm anything that had happened or what had been found in this traveller," Beth Thompson, South Dakota's state veterinarian, told news agency Reuters.
This case came after Brooke Rollins, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, along with other government officials, travelled to Texas to announce plans to build a sterile fly facility. This would help ward off the pests.

Screwworms are parasitic flies which feed on the host and, if untreated, can be fatal. The female flies lay eggs in wounds on animals. They usually do so on warm-blooded animals. And once the eggs hatch, the larvae then begin digging through the host animal's body.
These parasitic flies are similar to maggots, and their activity seems like a screw being driven into wood. They usually feed on cattle and wildlife; infestations in humans is a rarity, but once they attack, it can turn fatal.
