Iran rejected US ceasefire claims, calling demands “maximalist and irrational” as tensions escalate. President Donald Trump insists talks depend on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while missile strikes between Iran and Israel intensify, raising global economic and security concerns.
Hours ahead of US President Donald Trump's prime-time address on Wednesday to Americans on the Iran war, Iran has set the record straight with him and said that Washington is making "maximalist and irrational" demands. The US has claimed that it has been holding direct and indirect talks with the Iranians. However, Iran has maintained that only messages have been exchanged and no formal talks or negotiations have taken place. Trump is of the belief that Iran will accept his 15-point peace plan that include giving up of enriched uranium and assurance of never having a nuclear weapon.
Iran rejects Trump's ceasefire claims
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said, "Messages have been received through intermediaries, including Pakistan, but there is no direct negotiation with the US," said, quoted by the ISNA news agency. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also made similar statement. Their statements came after Trump claimed that Iran's “new” president had asked for a ceasefire but said the Islamic republic must first reopen the Strait of Hormuz, spurring global attention on his 9:00 pm (0100 GMT Thursday) televised address from the White House.

Writing on Truth Social ahead of his address, Trump said the United States would consider a ceasefire “when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!” But Iran's Revolutionary Guards vowed to keep the Strait of Hormuz, through which Gulf oil and gas exports reach global markets, closed to the country's “enemies.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei vowed to continue to follow the path of its martyred leaders and vowed to continue resistance against what he called the ‘Zionist-US’ enemy while hailing the sacrifice and martyrdom of senior military figures in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Hezbollah. Naming the United States and Israel as the “most obstinate enemies of the Islamic world,” Mojtaba wrote, “Without a doubt, steadfastness and patience in the face of the most obstinate enemies of the Islamic world—namely, the United States and its proxy in the region, the brutal Zionist regime—were some of the most outstanding characteristics of the martyred Leader and Imam.”
What to expect from Trump's speech
Several US based outlet quoted unnamed White House official saying that the president's speech would highlight the success of the military campaign in achieving the goals sketched out "prior to the operation." Although Trump's messaging has been inconsistent, the administration says these goals are to: - destroy Iran's navy. - destroy its missiles and production facilities. - neutralize its militia proxies across the region. - guarantee that Tehran can never obtain a nuclear weapon. "He is expected to reiterate the two-to-three-week timetable for concluding the operation that he stated yesterday," the White House official said.
Trump claims regime change, hints at seizing Kharg Island
After a month of war, Trump said that a regime change has already happened in Iran, adding that the United States is having very meaningful conversation with the Iranians. He also said that the US is dealing with a “completely different set of people” who are reasonable. He said that there can be a deal with Tehran “pretty soon.” About the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump said that he may be alive but he is seriously wounded. He even went on to claim that the Iranians have allowed several ships of oil boats as gift and respect. Meanwhile, Trump also hinted at overtaking Iran's Kharg Island “very easily” stating that it is his favourite thing to take oil from Iran.
