The flames and smoke could be seen coming out from the roof of the cathedral where renovations are currently are underway.

Fire trucks are on their way. Meanwhile, the Paris Police department had tweeted out to people to avoid that area and make way for the rescue team.

US President Donald Trump also tweeted about the fire saying,''So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!''

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo in a tweet described it as a "terrible fire".

"The Paris fire service is trying to control the flames," she wrote on Twitter, asking residents to respect the security cordon thrown up around the site.
