6 Benefits of Taking Collagen Supplements

Collagen is the main component of connective tissues that make up several body parts, including tendons, ligaments, skin, and muscles. Apart from supplements, many foods, like pork skin and bone broth, naturally increase collagen intake.

Collagen is a major component that makes up the skin. It plays a role in strengthening skin and provides elasticity and hydration to the skin cells. Collagen also promotes the production of proteins that help structure your skin, including elastin and fibrillin.

Collagen helps maintain the integrity of your cartilage, the rubber-like tissue that protects your joints. If the amount of collagen decreases in your body, it can cause degenerative joint disorders. Hence, consuming collagen supports joints and lowers inflammation.

Your bones are mostly made of collagen, which gives them structure and strength. Just as the collagen in your body deteriorates with age, so does bone mass. Hence, collagen supplements help in inhibiting bone breakdown which leads to osteoporosis.

Collagen is an important component of skeletal muscle that boosts muscle mass. Researchers have suggested that supplemental collagen may promote the synthesis of muscle proteins such as creatine, as well as stimulate muscle growth after exercise.

Collagen provides structure to your arteries, the blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. Without enough collagen, arteries may become less flexible and elastic. Hence, collagen plays a major role in promoting heart health.

Taking collagen supplements regularly may increase the strength of your nails and prevent brittleness. Also, it may help your hair and nails grow longer, with a growth of 12 per cent and a decrease of 42 per cent in the frequency of broken nails, as per NIH.
