Sri Lanka's fugitive police chief has surrendered to authorities and been remanded in custody, weeks after his arrest was ordered over a botched raid that killed a fellow officer. Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon stands accused of authorizing an ill-fated drug bust in 2023, allegedly in violation of internal regulations, which sparked a gun battle between competing police units. He surrendered after police raided his private home on Tuesday, where they seized over a thousand bottles of liquor, his service revolver, and two phones. Earlier, the Court of Appeal had rejected Tennakoon petition to quash the arrest warrant issued against him.
