India is planning to impose a safeguard duty of up to 25% on steel imports to curb a surge in cheap supplies, primarily from China. This proposal gained momentum during a recent meeting chaired by commerce minister Piyush Goyal, where small industries dropped their opposition after receiving assurances of affordable steel supplies.
