A company is drawing flak on social media for issuing a memo telling employees that they cannot take leave to attend to their sick children. In the post-Covid world where flexible working and work-life balance are raging topics, the memo was bound to face ire from people.
The post says taking an off "because your child is sick is no longer a valid excuse to miss work". Infuriating users further are the words "we do not employ your children".
The company that issued the memo has not been named in the post and neither is the country.
The memo was posted on the Reddit forum "antiwork". It reads, "Calling out because your child is sick is no longer a valid excuse to miss work and will now result in a write up. We do not employ your children and as such their sickness is not an excuse for you to miss work. Go team!"
The caption reads, "Where would you report this kind of behaviour."
People were quick to respond to the post, saying that you should quickly leave such a company.
“Yeah, I think that line was actually telling the ‘team’ to leave the company as fast as possible. Dust that resume off folks.”
The end words of the post, "Go team!", displayed the irony of the situation, where the words seem to be an effort to motivate the company to give their all to the company, but the company is not willing to do any such thing for their staff.
One of the users, referring to the words "Go Team", noted, “The fact that they know they're being too mean, so they felt the need to soften the blow at the end."
Another wrote, “Funny, ‘cause soon they’ll be saying ‘no team.’”
An angry user suggested that such a company should only hire people who have nobody in their lives, as all relationships demand their time.
"Well you don't employ my partner, my parents, friends and extended family either. All of which could need my help, could die, could have a wedding, a graduation or another big life event I want to be present for. Time to only hire orphans with no relationships whatsoever. Idiot employer," the user commented.

One of the users said that the company seems to be OK with everyone else falling sick at work. "Legit. I would leave a response to this note saying "Whatever my kids get, I end up catching. But if you want five staff members to end up calling in sick instead of one, because I gave everyone covid, then fine. Your loss."
Participation of women in the workforce across the world is not at par with men. This is primarily because women are the primary caregivers when it comes to children. This is also a reason why many women quit jobs to take care of their children, with more men left to occupy positions of power.
Several companies are trying to hire and retain women by introducing women-friendly policies. However, such memos are bound to push women to drop out, thus creating a major imbalance in the gender field at work.
