<h2><strong>Who all died in the crash?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency released the names of two pilots and one flight attendant who lost their lives in the deadly crash. The agency cited the airline to confirm that Captain Aleksei Levshin, co-pilot Rustam Karimov, and flight attendant Kristina Raspopova died.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The agency also released the names of those who were onboard, apart from Prigozhin. The list includes Sergey Propustin, Evgeniy Makaryan, Aleksandr Totmin, and Nikolay Matuseev. Two names stood out — Valeriy Chekalov and Dmitry Utkin. &nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, Utkin was Prigozhin's right-hand man who helped establish the mercenary group and bore the call sign "Wagner".&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Prigozhin expressed risks to his life in video</strong></h2>

<p>In a video that was released late last month, Prigozhin could be seen speaking about speculations over his well-being and possible threats to his security. He said that he was in Africa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the short video published by the Grey Zone Telegram channel which is linked to his Wagner Group, Prigozhin is seen sharing: "For those who are discussing whether I'm alive or not, how I'm doing - right now it's the weekend, second half of August 2023, I'm in Africa."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"So for people who like to discuss wiping me out, or my private life, how much I earn or whatever else - everything's ok," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While decoding the details of the video, it was found that it was indeed filmed in Africa as his camouflage attire, hat, and the watch on his right hand matched his appearance in a video released on August 21, which he also claimed was filmed in Africa. WION can't independently verify the video.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reference to "weekend" in the video implied the latest clip must have been made on August 19 or 20, just three or four days before Prigozhin and other top Wagner figures and bodyguards were killed in the crash.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kremlin has denied any involvement but there have been claims and counterclaims. However, Prigozhin's comments in the video reflect his awareness of the risks to his life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the biggest shake-up of the defence establishment since the war began 18 months ago, Ukraine on Wednesday (Sept 06) appointed former lawmaker Rustem Umerov as the new defence minister.</p>

<p>He has replaced his predecessor Oleksii Reznikov, who faced several allegations of corruption at the ministry and was later fired by West-backed President Volodymyr Zelensky.</p>

<p>It must be noted that Reznikov played a key role in securing billions in aid from the Western nations for the war-torn nation. He says he is the victim of a smear campaign and upholds his innocence. As per media reports, his dismissal is not expected to alter Ukraine’s war strategy.</p>

<h2><strong>‘New approach needed’</strong></h2>

<p>While welcoming Umerov aboard the council of ministers, Zelensky said that new approaches and other forms of interactions were needed to reinforce the so-called Ukrainian counteroffensive.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that heading the defence institution was a big responsibility. "To head the defence institution during the full-scale war with Russia is a big responsibility," the PM said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He received recognition for transforming the institution and reinitiating efforts to privatise state-owned companies, even amid the ongoing war, thus aiding their transition to private ownership.</p>

<p>Sergiy Leshchenko, an advisor to the presidential administration, noted, "It is the highest state position ever held by a Tatar from Crimea."<br />

The Tatar community in Crimea has predominantly opposed Russia's annexation of the peninsula.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to senior lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak's post on social media, 338 out of 360 present lawmakers voted in favour of Umerov's nomination.<br />

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired chiefs of all local military recruitment centres amid corruption allegations.</p>

<p>Zelensky on Friday (August 11) said a review of Ukraine’s military recruitment centres revealed signs of massive abuse of power, including taking bribes to let military-age men cross the border despite a wartime ban.</p>

<p>In a statement issued on Friday, Zelensky said, “This system should be run by people who know exactly what war is and why cynicism and bribery during war is treason," an awakening that seems to have hit him 18 months into the war.</p>

<h2><strong>Filling vacancies now topmost priority</strong></h2>

<p>It was not known how many officials were fired but Zelensky instructed his top general Valery Zaluzhny to fill vacancies as soon as possible and implement the decisions.</p>

<p>Also, new candidates for the posts will be first vetted by Ukrainian intelligence agency SBU, to keep Russian moles at bay.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine's air force on Sunday claimed it shot down 30 cruise missiles out of 40 allegedly launched by the Russian side and "all Shahed drones" launched by Russian forces in an overnight attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Thirty cruise missiles and 27 attack drones were destroyed," Ukrainian air force said on Telegram.</p>

<p>It added that Russia launched three Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. The air force, however, did not provide information if the missile detonated at the target site or was destroyed by Ukrainian defence.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Russia on Sunday said that its forces struck military airbases in the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne regions in western Ukraine and that "all targets were hit."</p>

<p>"Overnight Russia's armed forces carried out strike... on Ukrainian armed forces airbases around the settlements of Starokostiantyniv in the Khmelnytskyi region and Dubno in the Rivne region," the Russian defence ministry said.</p>

<p>Russian-appointed head of Crimea said that an ammunition depot was “detonated” on Saturday (July 22) by the Ukrainian drone attack and ordered the people living within the five kilometres of the attack to evacuate while halting the rail traffic</p>

<p>"As a result of an enemy drone strike on the Krasnogvardeisky district, there was a detonation at an ammunition depot," said official Sergei Aksyonov on Telegram. "A decision was taken to evacuate people (living) within five kilometres" of the zone, he stated, adding that: "To minimise risks, it was also decided to halt rail traffic on Crimean railways."</p>

<p>He said that the drone attack was “attempted” by Ukraine on infrastructure in the centre of the Moscow-annexed region.</p>

<p>"The goal is to return Crimea," Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said, according to a transcript published by his office Saturday of a speech addressing the Aspen Security Forum Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that Kyiv considers the Crimea bridge, which was&nbsp;opened by Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the year 2018, as an "enemy object" and wants it to be "neutralised".</p>

<p>On Friday, the Kremlin released a statement saying that Ukraine's "unpredictable" actions pose a danger to civilian shipping in the Black Sea.</p>

<p>It further condemned Kyiv for carrying out "terrorist attacks" in the area.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Russia said that this week all the ships that were heading to Ukraine's Black Sea ports could be considered military targets and that their flag countries parties to the conflict on the Ukrainian side, after it annulled their security guarantees by pulling back from the Black Sea grain deal.</p>

<p>"Unpredictable actions and, moreover, the involvement of the Kyiv regime in terrorist acts certainly potentially create a threat in this area," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.</p>

<p>On being asked if ships carrying Russian oil and other goods from Russia's Black Sea ports were at risk, Peskov told reporters that government departments would take a decision.</p>

<p>"The situation is being analysed, and our responsible agencies will develop appropriate recommendations to minimise the danger," he said.</p>

<p>The culture minister of Ukraine has resigned amid alleged disagreement with President Volodymyr Zelensky over budget appropriation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko tendered his resignation Friday (July 21), owing to “a wave of misunderstanding about the importance of wartime culture."</p>

<p>"During the war, both private and budget funds for culture are no less important than for drones, because culture is the shield of our identity and our borders," he wrote in a Facebook post.</p>

<h2><strong>Culture minister had allocated millions for a TV series</strong></h2>

<p>The alleged misunderstanding emerged between the minister and Zelensky after the former decided to allocate 448 million hryvnias (around $12 million) for the production of a television series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, he also wanted to earmark a $13 million package for finishing building a museum to commemorate Ukraine's 1932-33 famine, which Kyiv sees as a deliberate act of genocide by the erstwhile Soviets.</p>

<p>US President Joe Biden had to skip Tuesday’s NATO dinner with other world leaders because of ongoing workload issues, the White House said.</p>

<p>According to FoxNews, Biden had RSVP'd “no” to NATO summit dinner with others, making it the third time for him to skip dinner with world leaders during an international trip.</p>

<p>The White House said the US president has four full days of work ahead of him, and he will also be delivering a speech, hence he could not attend the dinner.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Biden will be meeting Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky after the conclusion of the NATO-Ukraine council meeting.</p>

<p>The bilateral meeting will take place at 3.45 pm (local time) in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius.</p>

<p>This comes days after Biden said that Ukraine cannot join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in the current timeframe and its bid is contingent upon ending the war with Russia.</p>

<h2><strong>Biden against Ukraine joining NATO</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking to CNN ahead of his NATO trip, Biden had said that it was “premature" to allow Ukraine to join the alliance in the middle of a war and that the process could take place only after a peace agreement with Russia was in place.</p>

<p>Biden added that the US and its NATO allies would continue to back President Volodymyr Zelensky by providing the necessary military aid that is needed to end the war.</p>

<p>“I don’t think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war," Biden said.</p>

<p>“For example, if you did that, then, you know – and I mean what I say – we’re determined to commit every inch of territory that is NATO territory. It’s a commitment that we’ve all made no matter what. If the war is going on, then we’re all in war. We’re at war with Russia, if that were the case,"&nbsp;the US president added.</p>

<p>Biden’s concerns stem from the fact that Ukraine joining NATO would bring all the member alliance closer to the war with Russia due to a clause in its charter.</p>

<p>Article 5 of NATO's charter states that if one member is attacked, it is deemed to be an assault on all and hence all others must come to its defence.</p>
