Russia has made it clear again and again in the past that it is against Ukraine getting inducted into an alliance which is&nbsp;largely viewed as an anti-Russia grouping to start with.</p>

<p>The BBC quoted Zelensky as saying the military push was not going easily because 200,000 sq km (77,220 sq miles) of Ukrainian territory had been mined by Russian forces.</p>

<p>"Whatever some might want, including attempts to pressure us, with all due respect, we will advance on the battlefield the way we deem best," he added.</p>

<p><strong>Minor recent gains</strong></p>

<p>After a series of initial gains, Ukraine claimed to have captured only one more village last week. On Wednesday, officials said that forces in the south were consolidating earlier gains while those in the east were resisting Russian attacks.</p>

<p>"They had partial success over the past day, they have consolidated at the boundaries that were reached and they have evened up the front line," Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said.</p>

<p>Zelensky's interview with Britain's public broadcaster was timed to coincide with a conference in London where allies were due to pledge billions of dollars in economic and reconstruction aid.</p>

<p>Washington has offered an additional $1.3 billion to Kyiv. Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told the conference Kyiv was hoping for more than $6 billion from the event.</p>

<p>The West, led by the US, has already poured in tens of billions of dollars in humanitarian as well as military aid. The military equipment provided to Ukraine includes hundreds of tanks and armoured vehicles. The forces that took shape as a result of all this help are expected to form the core of those set to be unleashed in Ukraine's counteroffensive.</p>

<p>Some of Ukraine's supporters worry that Kyiv will have to show impressive results on the battlefield in the coming weeks or risk political support waning in the West.</p>

<p>Both sides have stepped up longer-range attacks with missiles and drones in preparation for the fighting at the front. Russia said on Wednesday it had shot down drones that had reached the region surrounding Moscow. Kyiv never comments on reports of attacks inside Russia.</p>

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sought Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's support for the Ukraine peace proposal to end the ongoing war, according to a report by the Hindustan Times on Thursday (May 24). Zelensky presented Modi with a peace plan to end the war with Russia on the sidelines of the recently concluded G-7 summit in Hiroshima and sought New Delhi's endorsement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sources told Hindustan Times that Zelensky was most respectful of Modi and made no demands on India for asking support for his peace proposal as he felt that many countries look towards the largest democracy in the world. The proposal is under consideration by the Indian government, the report added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Zelensky invites Modi to visit Ukraine</strong></h2>

<p>During their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima last Saturday (May 21), Ukrainian President Zelensky invited the Indian prime minister to visit Ukraine. During their first face-to-face meeting since the Russian offensive began in February 2022, the two leaders discussed Ukraine's needs in mobile hospitals and removing land mines, Zelensky said in a post on Telegram.</p>

<p>Modi, meanwhile, told the Ukrainian president that he was keen to help and that for him war was an issue of humanity and human values. Earlier in a Twitter post, Modi said he told Zelensky of India's readiness to continue humanitarian help for the people of Ukraine and its backing for "dialogue and diplomacy" to seek peace.</p>

<p>Since the beginning of the war, the Indian prime minister has spoken to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky by phone several times, urging them to use dialogue and diplomacy to resolve their differences.</p>

<h2><strong>Wagner starts withdrawing units from Bakhmut</strong></h2>

<p>In the latest news on the Ukraine war, the Russian mercenary group Wagner has started withdrawing its forces from Bakhmut- which has emerged as the new flashpoint in the conflict.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are withdrawing the units from Bakhmut. From today at five in the morning, May 25 until June 1, most of the units will rebase to camps in the rear. We are handing our positions to the military," Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a video posted on Telegram. Prigozhin also said that his forces would be ready to return to Bakhmut if the regular army was unable to manage the situation.</p>
