Ukrainian forces shot down eight Russian missiles headed for the capital Kyiv&nbsp;around 4:00 am on Monday, said the country’s air force&nbsp; (local time).&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the United States President Joe Biden has invited his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky for a meeting at the White House, on Tuesday (Dec 12) amid a deadlock in US Congress over aid to Ukraine.

The&nbsp;meeting&nbsp;intends to “underscore the United States’ unshakeable commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Russia’s brutal invasion,” said the Biden administration, in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, “As Russia ramps up its missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, the leaders will discuss Ukraine’s urgent needs and the vital importance of the United States’ continued support at this critical moment.”

The meeting comes at a critical time for Ukraine as a deadlock over emergency aid to the war-torn country continues in the US Congress. Meanwhile, the Biden administration is looking to strike an agreement with US lawmakers that would provide military aid for both Ukraine and Israel.

Last week, Republican senators blocked $106 billion in emergency aid primarily for Ukraine and Israel citing the absence of immigration reforms they had demanded as part of the package. However, they seem no closer to a deal tying immigration and border policy changes to the emergency aid package.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president has been invited to address the US Senators on Tuesday (Dec 12) in the Capitol, a Senate leadership aide said on Sunday (Dec 10).&nbsp;

Zelensky will also hold a private meeting with US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday, said Johnson’s spokesperson Raj Shah in an email to Reuters.

"We will introduce import restrictions on non-industrial diamonds, mined, processed, or produced in Russia, by January 1, 2024," the leaders said after a virtual meeting with Zelensky.

This will be "followed by further phased restrictions on the import of Russian diamonds processed in third countries targeting March 1, 2024," they said.

By the beginning of September, a "robust traceability-based verification and certification mechanism for rough diamonds within the G7" will be established, it added.

"The free world vitally needs to maintain its consolidation, maintain interaction, maintain support for those whose freedom is being attacked."

On the Israel-Hamas conflict, the leaders said that "more effective action" was required to limit the displacement of&nbsp;civilians, and also echoed support for more pauses in the fighting allowing more aid.

Ukraine's positions at Avdiivka still 'protected': Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has promised not to attack Europe's biggest nuclear plant as a part of its counteroffensive against Russia, Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency told the Guardian in an interview.&nbsp;

He said, "President Zelensky has personally assured me that they will not directly bomb or shell it." However, he added that the president told him "all other options are on the table," in terms of taking it back.

This means that Ukraine follows the new five nuclear safety principles, among which one is "do not attack a nuclear power plant"- initially outlined by Grossi at the UN Security Council in May.&nbsp;

Russia captured the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in March 2022, the first time any reactor has been captured in war, prompting fears of incidents in the same country when an explosion at Chornobyl in 1986 spread radioactivity across the continent.&nbsp;

Given the current military situation, Grossi said, "anything can happen at any time." "I'm often asked, is [the power station] safe now? No. It's in the middle of a war zone with a counteroffensive," he added. The plant is a base for 500-600 Russian troops.&nbsp;

Grossi said there were two main problems and the most significant one was "direct attack, hit" while the secondary concern was the maintenance of water cooling after the Nova Kakhovka dam downstream was blown in June, leaving its reserve cooling water pond exposed.

He added that he is particularly concerned by "a number of fragile points apart from the reactors themselves" including "the spent fuel area which is not fortified" as well as other storage areas holding fresh nuclear fuels.

Ukraine has been trying to regain its territories, but the progress has been slow. There are hopes that it will recapture the area around the nuclear plant.

Grossi said that the focus of the nuclear regulators in recent years focused on the risk of a terrorist or cyberattack, not a land war in Europe. "I’ve had to cross the frontline three times, and as a diplomat, I was not expecting to do that in my career. I’ve been in places where they see each other. We are walking in the middle," he said.

Zelensky said the strike had slammed into the Kupiansk district, which borders Russia. In the war-battered region, Russian forces have been pushing to recapture territory they lost last year to Ukrainian troops.&nbsp;

In a statement on social media, Zelensky said: "The brutal Russian crime of hitting an ordinary grocery store with a rocket is a completely deliberate terrorist attack."&nbsp;

Zelensky posted an image of a woman kneeling over the body of someone apparently killed in the strike, with other corpses strewn around her, while rescue workers worked nearby.&nbsp;

Zelensky alleges 'brutal Russian crime' in Ukraine after at least 51 killed in strike

Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday he wants to turn the country's defence industry into a "large military hub" by partnering with western weapons manufacturers.

NATO member Romania on Saturday (Sep 30) said that there was a possible airspace breach during Russia's overnight drone attacks on infrastructure in neighbouring Ukraine. 
 
After Russia exited the deal which allowed safe grain shipments through the Black Sea, the strikes on Ukraine's southern Mykolaiv and Odesa regions have been ramped up by Russia. The regions are home to vital grain-exporting infrastructure. 
 
"Following the detection of groups of drones heading towards Ukrainian territory near the Romanian border" residents in the Galati and Tulcea municipalities were alerted, said the defence ministry, in a statement. 
 
"The radar surveillance system ... indicated possible unauthorised entry into national airspace, with a signal detected on a route towards the municipality of Galati," it stated.

The defence ministry stated that no objects appeared to have fallen inside the Romanian territory but they will continue the search on Saturday. Around midnight, the people living in Galati and Tulcea, which is near the port of Reni in southern Ukraine across the River Danube, were alerted and warned to take shelter. After two hours, the alert measures were lifted. 
 
Earlier this month, air-raid shelters were built by the Romanian soldiers to protect the residents in the eastern Romanian village of Plauru after they found drone fragments in the area.

The South Military command claimed that they shot down&nbsp;20 drones in the central Vinnytsia region and 10 others&nbsp;over the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions in the south.

Spokesperson for the southern command Natalia Humeniuk, speaking to&nbsp;Ukrainian TV, said that Russia continued&nbsp;attacking port infrastructure, which included those near&nbsp;the Danube river, and was also trying to strike critical infrastructure facilities in other regions of Ukraine "to impact the economy".

<h2>Zelensky takes steps to attract arms makers</h2>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky opened the first International Defence Industries Forum of Kyiv so as to attract more manufacturers who will build arms in Ukraine. 
 
"Our first task is to win this war and return a lasting and, most importantly, reliable peace to our people. We will accomplish this task through our cooperation with you," said Zelensky, in a speech at the opening on Friday (Sep 29).

Earlier this month, air-raid shelters were built by the Romanian soldiers to protect the residents in the eastern Romanian village of Plauru after they found drone fragments in the area. The Ukrainian president might have anticipated a far more hospitable reception compared to the US, where he is facing backlash from some US politicians regarding increased military aid.

But the scenes in Canada were not so great either, rather they saw a vociferous vocal public protest.&nbsp;

As both leaders exited the Royal York Hotel to leave the venue in the waiting convoy, a vocal crowd was seen passionately expressing their sentiments, shouting "go home" in what seemed to be a pointed message directed at the Ukrainian President.

Viral video: Canadians holler Trudeau and Zelensky, protest $650 million aid to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, met with his close ally, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Friday (September 22), and thanked him for his constant support to Kyiv.

Zelensky, who is on his tour to strengthen international backing for his country's struggle to repel a fierce Russian invasion, landed in the capital city of Ottawa late on Thursday (September 21).

Canada, which is a staunch supporter of Kyiv and also home to the world's second-largest Ukrainian diaspora, is set to announce that it is sending more weapons to Ukraine during Zelensky's visit, as per a government official.

Ahead of a bilateral meeting in the Canadian PM's office, Trudeau told Zelensky the visit was "an opportunity for Canadians to express directly to Volodymyr and through him to the Ukrainian people how strongly and unequivocally we stand with Ukraine".

In return, Zelensky said he had "a lot of warm words and thanks" from Ukraine for the military and humanitarian aid Canada had supplied.

Zelensky is scheduled to address parliament in Ottawa at 1 p.m. ET (1700 GMT) and then hold a news conference with Trudeau at 2:45 p.m. ET (1845 GMT) before flying to Toronto to meet business leaders and then address a rally.

Zelensky, during his visit to parliament, thanked Ottawa for its constant support to Canada since the Russian invasion.

"Thank you for your support. You've been with us from the first days of the full-scale war" and "I hope that you stay with us to our victory," Zelensky said after chatting with a senator of Ukrainian descent who came wearing her grandmother's traditional garb.

<h2>Zelensky meets Biden, gets aid package</h2>

On Thursday (September 21), Zelensky met US President Joe Biden at the White House and managed to win pledges of unstinting support and air defence weapons from the latter, but also issued a warning that Kyiv might get tipped over by Russians if the Republicans continue to oppose military aid.

Speaking at the Oval Office at the start of talks, Biden said the US remains committed to providing support in Kyiv’s efforts to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.

"We're supporting a just and lasting peace, one that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Biden.&nbsp;

Zelensky returned the favour by saying: "We greatly appreciate the assistance provided by the United States to combat Russian terror, really terror."

Afterwards, Biden formally announced a military aid package worth $325 million that includes air defence systems and the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155-millimeter Howitzer cannon. Additionally, the president informed that the first US M1 Abrams tanks will arrive in Ukraine "next week".&nbsp;

"Next week, the first US Abrams tanks will be delivered in Ukraine," Biden said.&nbsp;

However, the White House announced there was no deal to provide the long-range missiles that Zelensky wanted desperately for his troops.&nbsp;
