Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mentor Zaheer Khan has been left disappointed by pitch dished out at their home ground by the curator. The disappointment came after LSG lost their first game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season by eight wickets and 22 balls left against Punjab Kings. Zaheer, however, hoped that they'll be able to figure it out.
"What was a little disappointing for me here&hellip;" Zaheer said at press conference after the loss on Tuesday (Apr 1). "Considering it's a home game and in IPL you've seen how teams have looked at taking a little bit of home advantage, from that point of view you've seen the curator is not really thinking that it's a home game. I think maybe it looked like, you know, it was Punjab curator out here.

This is not the first time home advantage and pitch curator not helping has been talked about out loud this season. Earlier, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane had also voiced same concerns regarding the pitch at Eden Garden in Kolkata.
LSG, however, have more to worry about than getting the pitch right and first of those worries is skipper Rishabh Pant's form. The wicketkeeper-batter, bought for INR 27 crore (&gt;$3 million approx) has not been able to get going in the tournament so far.
In the three matches played, Pant has scores of 0, 15 and 2 - and this poor batting has been a big factor in LSG's two losses in three games.
Their batting has been relying on Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran so far. In the match against PBKS, Marsh got out on a duck and Pooran scored 44 off 30 balls - around 30 runs less than what he had scored in the last two games. Pant said after the match that's how much they were short while setting the target.
But it is not only Pant who has been out form, Aiden Markram at the top has scored 15, 1 and 28 runs in three games; David Miller hasn't been able to finish well, managing 27 not out, 13 not out and 19 in three games; Ayush Badoni has managed 4, 6 and 41 runs in those games.
So it is more about batting than pitch for LSG at the moment and they need to figure it out soon.

IPL 2025 | Mentor Zaheer calls out curator after LSG lose home game but fault lies in their batting

Shardul Thakur was not supposed to play in IPL 2025. He had made arrangements to play for Essex in England domestic cricket after going unsold in IPL mega auction last year. A few injuries then opened up some slots at Lucknow Super Giants and he got a call.
Shardul accepted the offer and has bowled two double-wicket overs in as many matches for LSG in IPL 2025. During the match against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday (Mar 26) he finished with 4/34 and and revealed it was Zaheer Khan who had called him to join the franchise.

"In IPL, all these things keep happening. Unfortunately few injuries here and there and there were few inquiries if I could join the camp. But LSG approached me first so I had to accept it. Zaheer Khan gave me a call. You have good and bad days, you have to go through it in cricket," said Shardul during the innings break.
Against SRH, Thakur removed dangerous Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, who had scored a whirlwind ton in the last game, on successive balls - putting IPL's most destructive batting line-up in defense mode.
In the match against Delhi Capitals, Shardul had also picked up two wickets that too in the same over - the first of DC's chase - as he dismissed Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel.
Overall, Thakur has played 95 IPL games for five different franchise over last 10 years. Before turning up for LSG, he played for Punjab Kings in 2015, Rising Pune Supergiants in 2017, CSK from 2018-2022, KKR in 2023 before going back to CSK in 2024.
In 95 IPL games before this season, he had taken 94 wickets with a best of 4/36 and an economy of 9.22 He also has 307 runs to his name at a strike rate of 137 and a best of 68.

Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian captain for the Perth Test against Australia, picked a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the BGT opener; his spell of 5/30 restricted Australia to 104 in reply to India’s moderate 150 on day one. With this, he completed his ninth away Test five-for, his 11th overall, surpassing several former greats, including Sir Andy Roberts, Allan Donald, Zaheer Khan and Denis Lillee.

Bumrah was instrumental in helping India bag a first-inning lead (46) despite failing miserably with the bat at the Optus Stadium.&nbsp;

While Bumrah got rid of the left-handed Khawaja for the first time in his career, he became only the second bowler after retired Dale Steyn to dismiss Smith on a golden duck in Tests.&nbsp;

Bumrah’s opening spell put Australia on the back foot, from where they never recovered, losing four more wickets before stumps on day one. The India Test captain also accounted for counterpart Pat Cummins on three.

On day two, Bumrah struck gold on his first delivery, dismissing Australia’s only recognised batter, Alex Carey, caught behind on 21, with the hosts reeling at 70 for eight at that stage. Though that was his last wicket, with Harshit Rana picking the remaining two, Bumrah’s spell broke Australia’s back, who got all out on 104 just at the stroke of lunch.

<h2>Most away Test five-fors</h2>

While Bumrah has age, skill and time at his disposal to rise on this list, he still is far from the number one position holder, New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee, who has an astonishing 21 away five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. Bowling veterans Glenn McGrath (18), Wasim Akram (17), Sydney Barns (15) and Malcolm Marshall (14) are among the top five.&nbsp;

With this, he completed his ninth away Test five-for, his 11th overall, surpassing several former greats, including Sir Andy Roberts, Allan Donald, Zaheer Khan and Denis Lillee. IPL: Former India bowler Zaheer Khan succeeds Gautam Gambhir as new mentor for Lucknow Super Giants

Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan is in negotiations with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the mentor's role. The northern IPL franchise, who came into the scene in 2022, has been without a mentor since Gautam Gambhir left the position vacant ahead of IPL 2024, to become&nbsp;Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)'s mentor. Thus, LSG is looking for Gambhir's successor.&nbsp;

If the talks materalise, Zaheer -- the ODI World Cup winner -- could become Lucknow's mentor and also provide his expertise to the bowlers. Morne Morkel, LSG's bowling coach, also vacated the post recently after being roped in as India's bowling coach on newly-appointed head coach Gambhir's recommendation. If Zaheer comes into the picture,&nbsp;the veteran will&nbsp;be a key interlocutor&nbsp;for players and the management of the franchise.

Interestingly, Zaheer's name had cropped up as a likely candidate to become India's next bowling coach after the resignation of the Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff. However, Morkel pipped the former Indian speedster. The South African will join the Indian squad ahead of their home Tests versus Bangladesh, starting Sep 19.

In the Lucknow&nbsp;setup, Zaheer will collaborate with head coach Justin Langer and join a strong team of coaches, including Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes, etc. In addition,&nbsp;there are&nbsp;talks of another prominent coach joining the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise. Nonetheless, the details are&nbsp;not fully clear.

Zaheer represented India in&nbsp;92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is, accounting for 311, 282 and 17 wickets, respectively. In addition, he played 100 IPL games, representing many franchises such as Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Daredevils (DD), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), etc. Currently, the India great is&nbsp;the Global Head of Cricket Development at the MI camp since 2022.

IPL 2025: LSG in talks with THIS Indian World Cup winner for mentor role

On Tuesday (July 9), the BCCI named Gautam Gambhir as Team India's head coach until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gambhir will take over from India's upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, from July 27, and is set to be given his own support staff as well. His predecessor Rahul Dravid had Vikram Rathour, Paras&nbsp;Mhambrey and T Dilip as the batting, bowling and fielding coaches, respectively, but Gambhir will have a new&nbsp;support staff. While several names have been doing the rounds, Jonty Rhodes is believed to be the next fielding coach with Gambhir keen to have Abhishek Nayar as the assistant coach.

For the bowling coach, Gambhir is reportedly eager to have his former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammate Vinay Kumar. However, BCCI is not on the same page and wants 2011 ODI World Cup winner Zaheer Khan to succeed Mhambrey. Sources told ANI, "BCCI is discussing the names of Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji for the position of bowling coach. BCCI is not interested in the name of Vinay Kumar."

Zaheer, India's fourth-highest wicket-taker in ODIs (269 scalps), has been part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) coaching setup post international retirement in 2014. It will be interesting to see who joins Gambhir-led support staff. As of now, no one has been finalised but the names are expected to come out in the coming few days. Gambhir backs former KKR teammate as India's bowling coach, BCCI keen to rope in THIS WC winner: Report

Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by nine runs in match 33 of the IPL 2024 edition on Thursday (April 18) in Mullanpur, Chandigarh. Asked to bat first, Hardik Pandya-led side rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 78 and vital knocks from Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma to post 192-7. In reply, Punjab were 14-4 and further reduced to 111-7 before Shashank Singh (41) and Ashutosh Sharma (28-ball 61) revived the run-chase.&nbsp;Despite the duo's spirited fightback, Punjab ended at 183 all out in 19.1 overs.

Talking about Ashutosh, who has been one of the finds for Punjab along with Shashank, the youngster once again came out all guns blazing in a tough run-chase. The right-hander played some magnificent shots as his inning was laced with 2 fours and 7 sixes at 217.86. One of the highlights of his knock was&nbsp;when he swept an attempted yorker from Jasprit Bumrah for a big six. Bumrah, who ended as the Player-of-the-Match for 3 for 21, was going for a yorker but Ashutosh anticipated it&nbsp;and executed the shot perfectly to clear the ropes,&nbsp;leaving commentators and the crowd stunned.

Thus, Ashutosh -- who also played a vital knock along with Shashank in Punjab's close win over Gujarat Titans (GT) earlier in the season -- was lauded by many for his splendid knock. Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan lauded Ashutosh particularly for his shot selection versus Bumrah -- the leading wicket-taker of the ongoing edition (13 scalps).

Zaheer said on Jio Cinema, "But tonight looked like Ashutosh was in the zone and that shot, which he played off Bumrah. No one, I mean, no one we've seen can play that kind of sweep shot to Bumrah, anticipating that yorker, going ahead and then yet managing."

PBKS vs MI: 'No one can play a sweep shot off Bumrah' - Zaheer Khan heaps praise on Ashutosh Sharma

Yashasvi Jaiswal became only the second Indian batter, after Little Master Sunil Gavaskar, to score 700-plus runs in a Test series during Day 1 of the Dharamsala Test against England, on Thursday (March 7). Jaiswal has been in superb form in the ongoing five Tests, at home, with two double tons and had 655 runs under his belt heading into the fifth and final game in Dharamsala. He scored a blistering 57 on the opening day to take his run-tally past the 700-run mark in the series. In addition, Jaiswal became the fastest Indian to reach 1,000 runs in Tests&nbsp;in&nbsp;just 16 innings.

In Indian cricket history, only Gavaskar has surpassed the 700-run mark (twice) in a Test series. Thus, Jaiswal continued to take giant strides in his brief red-ball&nbsp;career. Following Day 1 of the Dharamsala Test, former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan lavished huge praise on the left-hander, saying 'he is not abusing his form'.

<h2>'He's raised everyone's expectations which he will have to live up to'</h2>

Speaking to Sports18, Zaheer said, "The hunger to score runs is something which is very evident, for a player to have this kind of approach so early in his test career is something which gets everyone excited right now when you're looking at him and the way he's approaching the game."

He further opined, "That potential is going to be immense. He's raised everyone's expectations which he will have to live up to, and that's gonna add more pressure. But there are a lot of good signs when you're looking at him the way he's approaching the game, he's not abusing his form."

Zak reckoned that&nbsp;Jaiswal is showing the right signs of consistency, adding that the 22-year-old&nbsp;has got an opportunity to build&nbsp;a reputation as someone who scores big runs on a consistent basis.&nbsp;

He added, "He just wanted to consolidate his form, not take the form for granted is something which is very important. So he's showing all those right kind of signs for these kinds of performances to come more consistently in future. These kinds of series as an individual, you don't have many in your career. So he's got a great opportunity to build himself this kind of repetition where it's just going to consistently score these kind of runs."

Notably, Jaiswal&nbsp;is the top-scorer in the ongoing&nbsp;England series&nbsp;with 712 runs (and has one inning in hand).&nbsp;

'He's raised everyone's expectations which he will have to live up to' Speaking to Sports18, Zaheer said, "The hunger to score runs is something which is very evident, for a player to have this kind of approach so early in his test career is something which gets everyone excited right now when you're looking at him and the way he's approaching the game." He further opined, "That potential is going to be immense. He's raised everyone's expectations which he will have to live up to, and that's gonna add more pressure. But there are a lot of good signs when you're looking at him the way he's approaching the game, he's not abusing his form." Also read: IND vs ENG: Rohit Sharma joins Kohli, Dhoni to become 10th Indian captain to score 1k runs in Tests Zak reckoned that Jaiswal is showing the right signs of consistency, adding that the 22-year-old has got an opportunity to build a reputation as someone who scores big runs on a consistent basis. He added, "He just wanted to consolidate his form, not take the form for granted is something which is very important. So he's showing all those right kind of signs for these kinds of performances to come more consistently in future. These kinds of series as an individual, you don't have many in your career. So he's got a great opportunity to build himself this kind of repetition where it's just going to consistently score these kind of runs." Notably, Jaiswal is the top-scorer in the ongoing England series with 712 runs (and has one inning in hand).

IND vs ENG: 'He isn't abusing his form' - Former India pacer Zaheer Khan lauds young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal

Former India bowler Zaheer Khan thinks that the pitch in Rajkot, which is the venue for the third Test between India and England, will have some reverse swing in it. Zaheer made the comments on Jio Cinema on the eve of the the Rajkot Test which starts on February 15. The swing will definitely help Indian seamers, especially Jasprit Bumrah who was Player of the Match in the last match, taking a nine-wicket haul.

''I hope the pitch is on similar lines to the one in Hyderabad and Vizag,'' Zaheer said on Jio Cinema.

England have also named their playing XI for the third Test and have named two seamers in Mark Wood and James Anderson, further giving the indication of pacers going to play a more prominent role in the Test. IND vs ENG: 'Rajkot pitch to offer reverse swing,' predicts former India bowler Zaheer Khan

Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan lauded India for being aggressive and having the self-belief to level the five-match Test series, versus England,&nbsp;in the second Test in Visakhapatnam. Rohit Sharma-led India, who entered the second Test without the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, were trailing 0-1 after the loss in Hyderabad. However, they rode on Jasprit Bumrah's nine-wicket match haul, Yashasvi Jaiswal's 209 and Shubman Gill's 104 to win by 106 runs on Day 4 on Monday (Feb 5).

<h2>'Batting is something that they will be talking about'</h2>

After the Test match, Zaheer lauded Rohit &amp; Co. for having the belief to level the series but also cautioned them going ahead, highlighting their areas of concern.&nbsp;Speaking to JioCinema, Zak said, "If you are one down in the series, you need that aggression, fight and belief to make sure that it is 1-1 after the end of the game. And I think Rohit was able to bring out those individual performances from the players. There are a few concerns when you look at the team - batting is something that they will be talking about because under these conditions, on this sort of a surface, we have seen India do better."

He further opined, "You look at England's second innings, there is only one half-century and they still managed to get close to 300. That is what collective effort can do. We have seen two brilliant innings - Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, but with the bat, there is a lot of work to be done."

The third Test will kick off on Feb 15 in Rajkot with the series interestingly poised at 1-1. India expect the return of Kohli and Rahul for the remainder of the series whereas Jadeja and Mohammed Shami are likely to miss the entire series due to injury concerns. Ind vs Eng: ‘There are a few concerns’ - Zaheer Khan shares advice for Team India despite Vizag Test win

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan thinks South Africa will be spoiling the party for a lot of teams in the ODI World Cup 2023. While the Proteas are tagged as 'chokers' when it comes to the ICC tournaments, Khan said they will be a force to reckon with in the quadrennial event which starts Thursday (October 5).

“Everyone seems to be talking about India, England, Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand as contenders, but I feel South Africa will be the dark horse at the World Cup this year,” said Zaheer at an event in Mumbai.

“South Africa’s history when it comes to ICC tournaments isn’t great,” he added. “They have this tag of 'chokers' also which goes with them. But somehow, looking at the way they played against Australia recently, I think they could be the dark horse. If certain players from their squad come good in the Indian conditions, they will definitely be a force to reckon with.”

Notably, South Africa beat Australia 3-2 in the five-match ODI series before arriving in India for the World Cup. The Proteas were 0-2 down in the series before making a spectacular comeback to win the series. Zaheer also mentioned that despite the teams ending in top four in the group stage, any team can beat anyone in the semis and finals.

“The format is such that if you manage to be in the top four at the end of the league stage, you only need two more days of good cricket to win the title,” Zaheer said. “And in such a situation, anyone can beat anyone. How each team approaches the league stage and builds momentum will be crucial,” added Khan.

South Africa start their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka in the fourth match of the tournament on October 7 before taking on Australia in their next match on October 12.

ODI World Cup 2023: South Africa to spoil party for many teams, says former India pacer Zaheer Khan

Rohit Sharma-led India&nbsp;will start their campaign in the 50-over World Cup on October 08, in Chennai, when they play Australia. India is&nbsp;hosting&nbsp;the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Rohit &amp; Co. have a herculean task to end India's ten-year-long ICC title drought and replicate MS Dhoni-led India's historic run in the 2011 edition when they won the coveted title after 28 years.&nbsp;

Recently, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir -- who played a pivotal role in Dhoni-led India's title run in 2011 -- schooled the social media users for being individual-obsessed as they don't give the entire Indian team enough credit for the championship win on home soil. During a freewheeling chat with RevSportz, Gambhir said, "Do we celebrate Yuvraj Singh enough for what he did in the 2011 World Cup with all the health concerns he had? Do we celebrate Zaheer Khan’s opening spell enough? To start off a World Cup final with four maiden overs is incredible, and yet he isn’t given enough credit."

"Do we celebrate Sachin Tendulkar’s efforts enough? Yes, we celebrate him and the win, but how many remember he was the highest scorer in the World Cup with two hundreds to his name? Do we celebrate Harbhajan Singh’s spell against Pakistan in Mohali, or Suresh Raina’s innings against Australia in Ahmedabad and Pakistan in Mohali? Both these innings were match-winning efforts,"&nbsp;Gambhir further stated.

<h2>'While we celebrate MS Dhoni’s innings, we should celebrate these other efforts too'</h2>

Gambhir schooled the social media fans and pointed out their individual obsession and added, "While we celebrate MS Dhoni’s innings in the final, we should celebrate these other efforts as much. Not one innings could win India the trophy. It was a collective effort, and should be celebrated as such. It is because of social media that we don’t do it. Social media is biased and we all know that."

"But social media doesn’t make it the truth. There is always a tendency on social media to celebrate individuals more than the team. In doing so, what happens is we don’t celebrate key performers who had as much a part to play. And that’s an issue for sure. All I will say is we should celebrate the entire team. While we celebrate Dhoni, we should also celebrate the others who all played very important roles in the Indian win," he concluded.

Talking about the CWC '11 edition, India beat teams such as Australia, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka (in the final), etc. to win the championship at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 02. Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj (Player-of-the-Series), Virat Kohli and Raina played a solid part with the bat whereas Zaheer Khan, R Ashwin, Munaf Patel, Ashish Nehra, etc. also had an important part to play with the ball. Dhoni, who struggled throughout the tournament with the bat, saved his best for the summit clash as he came up with a match-winning 91 not out in India's chase of 272 versus the Islanders.

Gambhir recalls Dhoni's CWC '11 final knock, schools social media users for being individual-obsessed

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan isn't much impressed with how Ishan Kishan got out during the second Test against West Indies. The wicketkeeper-batsman got his opportunity ahead of Srikar Bharat on the tour but hasn't been of much impact so far with the bat.

“He started the knock well. So he will be extremely disappointed because once you have played 30-40 deliveries and scored 25 runs, you have gotten your eye in. In Test matches, it is said that it is not a problem if you get out at the start,” Zaheer said while speaking on JioCinema.

Unlike the first Test, Kishan had a decent opportunity to bat long in the second Test with a solid platform laid by openers Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as well. The left-hand batsman could score only 25 runs and got out to a shot which Zaheer described as a shot of T20 mindset.

“However, if you get out like this, especially the shot he played, the T20 or white-ball effect was seen in that, so he will be disappointed with that because he had an excellent opportunity to play a good knock today,” added the former India pacer.

India, nonetheless, finished strongly with a score of 438 in their first innings as Virat Kohli notched up his 29th Test century. Virat also broke Sachin Tendulkar's record of most centuries in first 500 international matches by one ton. Tendulkar had scored 75 of his 100 tons in the first 500 international games he had played while Kohli scored 76 in same number of matches. This was also Kohli's first ton in five years outside Asia.

As for bowling, India had scalped two West Indian wickets for a total of 117 runs before rain interrupted play on day 3. India currently lead the two-match series 1-0.

Ind vs WI: Former India pacer Zaheer Khan 'not happy' with Ishan Kishan getting out playing white-ball shot

Former India seamer Zaheer Khan is perplexed over Umran Malik's omission from SunRisers Hyderabad squad in the last few games. Malik, 23, was the Emerging Player of the Tournament in IPL 2022, and this season has played just seven&nbsp;games picking five&nbsp;wickets. He, however, didn't feature in the previous few matches.

With SRH already out of IPL 2023, giving Umran a few games would have done good to his confidence. Against RCB in the home tie the other night, Umran was again benched, while Kartik Tyagi was given a go ahead alongside T Natarajan. Following the eight-wicket loss, Zaheer, who is also an expert on Jio Cinema, was left clueless regarding Malik's omission.

Expressing his concern over the same, Zaheer said SRH didn't handle Umran's case well this season.

“I felt Umran Malik has not been handled well by the franchise; (in terms of) the way he should have been handled and the way his services should have been utilised by SRH. That’s something which was evident,” Zaheer said, as quoted in Indian Express.

“When you are talking about a young seamer, you are also looking at creating that environment and support. And, that guidance is required. Unfortunately that was not seen by SRH. That’s why he’s had a season like this,” Zaheer added.

While with express pace Umran has to offer, he is an outright x-factor, and having achieved little laurels playing in the India jersey, Umran deserved to get an extended run, given its also the World Cup.

Aiden Markram, SRH's captain - at the toss, also didn't know why Umran is not getting the games, raising questions over who is taking the call regarding team selection.&nbsp;

"...(About Umran Malik) Not too sure to be honest. Certainly, he's a player with the X factor, bowls at 150kph, but I don't really what's about behind the scenes but he has a lot of X factor.. Lots of pride to play for," Markram said while explaining the team selection at toss.

Frequent injuries to bowlers worries Khan

Besides this, Zaheer also shared his opinion on why Indian bowlers are getting injured so often, including likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna.&nbsp;

“I am equally puzzled on this (bowlers getting injured). Also there are some batters who have had some seriousinjuries. That is beyond my understanding, and it has to do with a combination for sure,” Zaheer said.

“I believe something needs to be looked at carefully in terms of how they’re approaching the whole season or their training to rest and recovery ratio. It is very difficult to pin-point in one word what’s exactly going wrong,” he added.&nbsp;

Former India seamer Zaheer Khan is perplexed over Umran Malik's omission from SunRisers Hyderabad squad in the last few games. Malik, 23, was the Emerging Player of the Tournament in IPL 2022, and this season has played just seven games picking five wickets. ALSO READ: IPL 2023: Master-chaser Virat Kohli reveals success mantra following match-winning hundred against SRH “I felt Umran Malik has not been handled well by the franchise; (in terms of) the way he should have been handled and the way his services should have been utilised by SRH. Aiden Markram, SRH's captain - at the toss, also didn't know why Umran is not getting the games, raising questions over who is taking the call regarding team selection. "...(About Umran Malik) Not too sure to be honest. Certainly, he's a player with the X factor, bowls at 150kph, but I don't really what's about behind the scenes but he has a lot of X factor.. Lots of pride to play for," Markram said while explaining the team selection at toss. Frequent injuries to bowlers worries Khan Besides this, Zaheer also shared his opinion on why Indian bowlers are getting injured so often, including likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna. “I am equally puzzled on this (bowlers getting injured). Also there are some batters who have had some seriousinjuries. That is beyond my understanding, and it has to do with a combination for sure,” Zaheer said. “I believe something needs to be looked at carefully in terms of how they’re approaching the whole season or their training to rest and recovery ratio. It is very difficult to pin-point in one word what’s exactly going wrong,” he added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

IPL 2023: 'Perplexed' Zaheer Khan raises questions over Umran Malik's omission from SRH squad

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to commence on Friday evening (March 31) in Ahmedabad. The opening game will see the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) take on the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. The new season is keenly awaited as it will see the superstar cricketers light up the atmosphere as the 2023 edition marks the return of home-and-away format.

Over the years, the IPL has become a huge tournament. It is the most-followed T20 league, which came into existence in 2008 shortly after India's famous 2007 T20 World Cup triumph. The announcement of the league was made before the T20 WC win and since then, it has only grown leaps and bounds.&nbsp;

The tournament has plenty of things to look forward to. The teams fight it out for the mega title whereas the batters also compete for the Orange Cap (most runs in a season) whereas bowlers lock horns to bag the Purple Cap (with most wickets). In 2007, Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir (22) bagged the Purple Cap for the eventual winners Rajasthan Royals (RR). In 2009, India's RP Singh claimed the elite cap with 23&nbsp;wickets for the Adam Gilchrist-led now-defunct Deccan Chargers.

In 2009 edition, Singh claimed as many as 23 scalps as the Chargers went on to lift the title by beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six runs in the final. The tournament was held in South Africa due to the general elections in India.&nbsp;

Singh was also India's leading wicket-taker in Dhoni-led Men in Blue's famous T20 WC triumph, picking 12 wickets (third overall).

IPL 2023: Not Lasith Malinga! THIS former India pacer has bowled most maidens in mega event

Veteran Pakistan wicket-keeper batter Kamran Akmal heaped praise on young Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh after his brilliant spell in the first T20I against South Africa on Wednesday. Arshdeep was sensational with the new ball as he combined with Deepak Chahar to run through South Africa's top order with a three-wicket haul.

Making the most of the swinging conditions at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Arshdeep and Chahar reduced South Africa to 9/5 inside 15 balls after the hosts won the toss and opted to bowl first. India went on to win the game comfortably by 8 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Praising Arshdeep for his intelligence and skills, Akmal went on to compare the 23-year-old with former India pacer Zaheer Khan. Zaheer, who was part of India's 2001 World Cup-winning squad, is regarded as one of the best pacers to have played for the country.

"Arshdeep Singh is an incredible bowler. I think the Indian team has found its next Zaheer Khan. Arshdeep has both pace and swing, and he has that bowling intelligence. He's mentally strong and knows his abilities, and uses them according to the conditions,” Akmal said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Arshdeep was on the money from the word go in the series-opener between India and South Africa on Wednesday. He picked up three wickets in his very first over of the game, including two wickets of Rilee Rossouw and David Miller on two straight deliveries to rattle the visitors. Akmal was impressed with Arshdeep's variations and said he still has a lot of potential&nbsp;to grow.

“He dismissed Rilee Russouw caught-behind, bowled De Kock out. But the best wicket was that of David Miller because he kept getting the ball to move away from him before bowling a sharp inswinger to bowl him out. He bowls brilliantly and he is mature, has pace and is still young. It's a good sign for Team India because they needed a left-armer after Zaheer Khan,” Akmal added.

Arshdeep will be looking to continue his fine form with the ball when India take on South Africa in the second T20I between the two sides at the&nbsp;Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday.

Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha hailed MS Dhoni and mentioned that the ex-Indian captain was one of the main reasons behind Men in Blue's 2011 ODI World Cup triumph at home. Ojha credited Dhoni for creating a group of 25-30 players who were ready for the big occasions at any given point and had enough match experience to not falter during knockout stages.

“I strongly feel that the reason the 2011 World Cup was a success for us was because MS Dhoni was very serious about all the guys who were going to be in the mix, the 25 or 30, needed to play at least 40 games before the World Cup started. You may have scored a lot of runs but if you don’t have the experience of dealing with various situations, you may not feel it during the league matches but the most important games, the knockouts, the semi-finals and the finals …. That is when that experience really helps you," Ojha said on&nbsp;FanCode.

Under Dhoni, India lifted their second ODI WC title by beating Sri Lanka in the final at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 2, 2011. Dhoni scored a match-winning 91 not out along with Gautam Gambhir's 97 as India chased down a challenging 274 versus the Islanders. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, R Ashwin, etc. played a huge role in India's success.

Ojha was sharing his views while talking about Rohit Sharma-led India's constant chopping and changing with their limited-overs sides with the T20 World Cup only over&nbsp;two months away. He asserted, "Jab aapke paas itna bada pool rehte hai, toh uska downside bhi agar aap dekhein, toh jabhi bhi aapko mauka milta hai … it will be limited. Competition has become neck to neck. Players are performing so you have to bring you A game, and if you do not perform and another guy does and some senior play gets back in, then unfortunately you will miss out."

"That is the truth. These players need to realise that they are playing for India and just grab their chances. Look at what Suryakumar Yadav has done … He’s getting hundreds. Deepak Hooda got a hundred. If you are scoring hundreds, in any format and at any level, then people start noticing you. In the Ranji Trophy, the level of competition has gone up. People are not talking about who has scored a hundred, but who has scored double-hundreds and triple-hundreds. When the competition goes so high you have to raise your game too and go higher," Ojha added.

Rohit-led India are currently involved in the five-match T20I series versus hosts West Indies. The series is levelled at 1-1 with three more games to go.

'He was very serious...' - Former Indian spinner hails MS Dhoni for Team India's 2011 ODI World Cup triumph

India and South Africa were involved in a closely-fought five-match T20I series, which came to a disappointing end on Sunday evening (June 19). After the hosts Rishabh Pant-led Indian team had levelled the series, 2-2, by winning the fourth and penultimate T20I, there was all to play for both teams in the series decider before persistent rain in Bengaluru saw only 3.3 overs possible as it led to a no-result and the series being shared.

For India, they still had a lot of positives as they came back from being 0-2 down. The likes of Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar did well. Bhuvi returned with the Player-of-the-Series award, claiming six wickets in four innings.

Thus, the 32-year-old Bhuvi claimed a new record, by winning the most Player-of-the-Series awards by an Indian fast-bowler. He, thus, surpassed Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma. The two&nbsp;have won it thrice when compared to Bhuvi (4). Earlier, the swing bowler had picked up the player of the series awards during the 2013 Celkon Cup tri-series in West Indies(ODIs), 2014 tour of England and 2018 tour of South Africa (in Tests and T20Is, respectively).

At the post-match presentation, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bhuvi told, "Really proud. Body feels good, but I don't want to talk much about it. Just want to focus on getting back stronger physically and with my bowling. Most of the times I bowl two at the top and two at the end. Being a senior, I also think about how to help the youngsters. I have been lucky that the captain gave me the free hand to do whatever I wanted. Pretty blessed in that way."

Bhuvi will next be seen in action in India's two-match T20I series versus Ireland, in Dublin, on June 26 and 28. He will be the vice-captain with Hardik Pandya set to lead the Men in Blue.

The two have won it thrice when compared to Bhuvi (4). Earlier, the swing bowler had picked up the player of the series awards during the 2013 Celkon Cup tri-series in West Indies(ODIs), 2014 tour of England and 2018 tour of South Africa (in Tests and T20Is, respectively). Pretty blessed in that way." Bhuvi will next be seen in action in India's two-match T20I series versus Ireland, in Dublin, on June 26 and 28. He will be the vice-captain with Hardik Pandya set to lead the Men in Blue.
