Team India defeated Australia by 11 runs in the first T20 of the three-match series at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. Virat and Co. came back to win this match after Australia was off to a very good start because of Aaron Finch and D’Arcy Short's explosive start. However, the match turned into India's favour when Yuzvendra Chahal came down to the bowl.

Chahal picked up a crucial wicket of Finch and went on to scalp two more wickets to help India win a crucial fixture against the hosts. However, Chahal came in as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja, whose 23-ball 44 helped India set a good total.

Jadeja was hit on the head but didn’t seek immediate medical attention but when Australia batted, it was Yuzvendra Chahal, who came out as concussion substitute and took 3 for 25 to play a big part in India’s 11-run win against Australia in the first T20 international. However, controversy erupted when Chahal entered the pitch. Aussie coach Justin Langer was seen arguing with the match referee over this decision.

Former batting legend Virender Sehwag supported Team India and said they were absolutely to bring in Chahal as symptoms related to head injuries can show up as late as 24 hours after the hit.

“From our side, it was a right decision as Ravindra Jadeja was not fit to play and could not bowl as well,” Sehwag, who is an expert on ‘Sony Six’, said.

“It was an opportunity which the Indian team got because he was hit on the head and when you are hit on the head, nobody can say that concussion will happen at that time. It takes time. You might get symptoms within 24 hours. So the Indian team took the right advantage of the rule.” Sehwag feels that Australians shouldn’t be complaining as they were the first beneficiaries of concussion substitute rule.

“When Steve Smith was hit on the head, Labuschagne came out to bat in place of him and made runs. So, Australia also got that advantage. So I think Australia shouldn’t complain.”

'It was a right decision': Virender Sehwag on controversy around Chahal's substitution

Australian head coach Justin Langer blew up at match referee David Boon for India’s usage of concussion substitute. Star Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal replaced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja after the latter suffered a concussion after the completion of India’s innings in the first T20I against Australia at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday.

As per rules, the match referee is the final official to approve the concussion substitute after consultation with medical staff. The BCCI medical team came to the conclusion that Jadeja suffered a concussion and as India didn’t have any other all-rounder in the team and Jadeja regularly bowls four overs for India in T20Is, the match referee approved the decision to field Chahal as a substitute to Jadeja.

Lander was seen having a heated conversation with Boon before the start of the second innings after Jadeja was struck on the helmet on the second ball of the final over of the first innings from Mitchell Starc.

Concussion replacements are strange: Virat Kohli

“There were no plans of having Yuzi in the game. Concussion replacements are a strange thing. Today, it worked for us. Yuzi showed character to squeeze the opponents. I thought they had a great start. They were cruising. The batters offered us a few wickets. That is T20 cricket for you,” Indian skipper Kohli said after the match.

Can't challenge medical experts: Finch

“Their doctor had ruled Jadeja out due to concussion. You can't be challenging a medical expert's opinion,” Australian captain Finch said.

Notably, Jadeja didn’t undergo concussion test after he was hit on the helmet by Starc and was only evaluated after the end of innings. However, ICC regulations permit concussion test to be conducted at the end of the over, which happened in this case – the end of innings. There are suggestions that Jadeja probably suffered a delayed concussion.

“Should he have had a concussion test there and then?” Mark Waugh said on Fox Cricket. “He would not have been able to bat.”

“You would think the Australian management would be saying wouldn’t there be protocols that need to be met to make that judgement,” Gilchrist added. “Because he scored the lion’s share of his runs after that.”

“You can’t have it both ways,” Waugh said. “You can’t have a substitute who can then bowl for you and then bat on.”

“No doctor or physio came out to test Jadeja for concussion... he then looks like his [sic] has done something to his leg... then they pull the concussion replacement!!! #RatSniffed,” former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted.

Justin Langer gets into altercation with match referee over controversial concussion sub

India on Friday defeated Australia by 11 runs at the Manuka Oval in Canberra to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. India posted 161/7 in 20 overs but successfully defended the total by 11 runs as Yuzvendra Chahal, who was the concussion substitute in the match, and debutant T Natarajan starred with the ball for the Men in Blue.

India, batting first, were off to a torrid start as Mitchell Starc cleaned up Shikhar Dhawan (1) early in the innings before Mitchell Swepson dismissed Indian skipper Virat Kohli (9). KL Rahul and Sanju Samson stitched a crucial partnership in between but the latter for sent packing by Moises Henriques after a quickfire 23. Manish Pandey (2) fell to Adam Zampa, who continued his good form with the ball.

An in-form Hardik Pandya too perished for 16 before Ravindra Jadeja came out all guns blazing and smashed 44 not out off 23. Controversy hit the match as Jadeja was replaced by Chahal as concussion substitute with some of the former cricketers asking why wasn’t the Indian all-rounder checked by doctors when he was hit on the helmet with three balls to go in the first innings. Jadeja scored nine off those deliveries to take India above the 160-run mark.

"I have played so many games and was mentally fit. 10-15 minutes before the start of the innings, I got to know I will play. The way Zampa bowled, I tried to do the same as well. It was a little harder to score in the first innings. 150-160 is a good score on this wicket. I bowled according to my plans," said Chahal after being named Man of the Match.

IPL 2020: Ben Stokes says this RCB player should have been the Man of the Match instead of ABD

Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 82 runs in the 28th match of IPL 2020 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Royal Challengers Bangalore won the toss and chose to bat first. Padikkal and Finch gave a good start to the Royals. Virat Kohli seemed out of touch as he just hit one ball to the boundary. Finch hit 47 runs off 37 balls. Padikkal was the first man to depart. He scored 32 runs off 23 balls. However, the pace was slow until De Villiers arrived. AB de Villiers' 73 runs off 33 balls single-handedly powered the Challengers to 194 runs. The bowlers initially showed discipline restricting batsmen from hitting boundaries until AB de Villiers arrived.

Kolkata Knight Riders were off to a slow start and lost too many wickets at the beginning itself. Debutant Tom Banton was the first to depart after being bowled by Saini. Shubman Gill scored the most of the runs for KKR after scoring 34 runs off 25 balls. However, KKR kept losing wickets putting the pressure on the remaining batsmen. Andre Russell tried hitting the shots across the boundaries but ended up losing his wicket too. Chris Morris, Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal played a vital role in restricting KKR to 112/9. RCB has one of the strongest batting lineups this season. With Aaron Finch's aggression, Virat Kohli's consistency and AB de Villiers variety, the batting department could win the franchise many matches. However, Kevin Pietersen, a former English and RCB batsman, has pointed out a weak link of the team.

According to Pietersen, RCB lacks quality in their bowling contingent. The team's bowling department consists of Dale Steyn, Adam Zampa, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav, Navdeep Saini and Mohammed Siraj.

“I don’t know how many IPLs I have done now, sitting here and previewing every single one of them. It’s always that question about RCB and can they do it. Now, they are proven performers with the bat, they can bat and are brilliant with the bat. They have the greatest batsman, the greatest modern-day batsman that’s in their team, they’ve got the second greatest modern-day batman that’s in their team as well,” said Pietersen on Star Sports’ Cricket LIVE.

“They form a formidable batting partnership and I stress the batting partnership because what they’ve lacked is bowlers. Last year, when Dale Steyn came over, having lost a number of games in a row, they got a fast bowler and they started to win a couple of games. So, the strength and depth that they would have brought into that, the acquisition of Adam Zampa as well has been good,” he further added.

In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Kohli is seen having a candid conversation with Chahal.

As a result of this knock of 120 runs, Kohli became the highest run-getter against West Indies in the ODI format. He also became the second-highest run-getter for the Men in Blue in the 50-over format.

"It was important for me to stay at the crease. As a side, we try that one of our top three batsmen goes on to play a big knock. Shikhar and Rohit have done that for us in the past, and today I was able to do it. Honestly, I was tired when I reached the score of 65, but the situation demanded me to work hard for every run," Kohli told Chahal after the second ODI.

When Kohli revealed that he was tired once he reached 65, Chahal remarked "Breaking News: Even our skipper gets tired".

India vs England: Yuzvendra Chahal ends up as most expensive Indian bowler in World Cups

Harbhajan Singh has hailed wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal for their key role in India's recent one-day successes, saying the pair should be fixtures for the rest of the World Cup.

Wrist spinners generally get more turn than finger spinners, with left-armer Yadav striking twice in India's 89-run hammering of arch-rivals Pakistan in Manchester on Sunday to prove his worth on English pitches that often favour the quicks at this stage of the season.

Chahal's leg-spinners did the damage in India's first World Cup outing against South Africa, with the bowler returning figures of 4-51.

Calls were made to replace Yadav with paceman Mohammed Shami against Pakistan but former India off-spinner Harbhajan said the team should stick with the spin twins.

"It is a very good combination," Harbhajan told AFP. "The results that India have got in the last two-and-a-half years, a lot of credit should be given to these guys.''

"I would like to see them playing together because none of the other teams have got two spinners and they don't have the habit of playing spin in the middle overs. It has worked for India to play two spinners, even in English conditions, because they are wrist spinners. If India are thinking about their best XI then these two will feature in all the games," Harbhajan said.

The two bowlers have 168 one-day international wickets between them in the three years since Chahal made his international debut in 2016. Yadav played his first ODI the following year.

The 24-year-old Yadav is 10 away from a century of wickets with an impressive economy rate of 4.92 in 47 ODIs.

"He has definitely got the capabilities and the talent to be there for a long period of time," said the 38-year-old Harbhajan, who last played for India in a 2016 Twenty20 match.

"(India coach) Ravi Shastri said he is our number one bowler. So it's good that the team is backing him," said Harbhajan, one of India's finest off-spinners, who took 417 wickets in 103 Tests and 269 wickets in 236 ODIs.

India, second in the ODI rankings, have been hit by injuries to opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan - out of the rest of the World Cup - and paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

India's strength

But Harbhajan said Virat Kohli's side have strength in depth with Shami, who is yet to play at the World Cup, likely to replace Kumar in the next match against Afghanistan on Saturday.

"I think Shami is capable enough to win games on his own. He is one of those guys who has been a matchwinner on his own," said Harbhajan.

Harbhajan credited Kohli for a fitness revolution that has improved all aspects of India's game, particularly their fielding.

"They are fit, agile, a proper fielding squad. All the credit must be given to Kohli for changing the face of Indian cricket in terms of fitness," said Harbhajan, a member of the 2011 World Cup-winning team.

"So if you have better fitness then your results always follow the way you want them to be," he said.

Harbhajan said England, holders Australia, New Zealand and India - the current top four - would qualify for the semi-finals, with Kohli's side the team to beat in the knockout phase.

"To beat India they (other teams) will have to bring their 'A' game on that day. India will be a very tough side to beat," Harbhajan said with a smile.

India's gamble in playing two spinners in their opening World Cup match against South Africa proved to be a masterstroke as the bowlers spurred them to victory on Wednesday, captain Virat Kohli said.

The Indians, who are chasing their third World Cup title, condemned the South Africans to their third successive loss in the tournament after Yuzvendra Chahal bamboozled the batsmen with his leg-spin as he grabbed four wickets for 51 runs, while fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with a wicket.

India coasted to a solid, if unspectacular, six-wicket victory with 15 balls remaining after opener Rohit Sharma carried his bat to score an unbeaten 122.

"Picking the two spinners were a massive factor for us," Kohli told a news conference.

"The last time we played them, they were trying to hit boundaries rather than take singles and as a captain, I will take that any day as there is more of a risk factor in such strokes," Kohli added.

The spin duo picked up the baton after Jasprit Bumrah gave the Indians a great start by dismissing South African openers Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock inside six overs with a devastating spell of swing bowling.

"Obviously, Bumrah is bowling at a different level and Chahal as a youngster never refuses to take the ball in any condition," added Kohli.

With South Africa restricted to 227-9 from their 50 overs on a batting-friendly wicket, India knew they did not have to take many risks to get the win on the board.

Kohli also rated Sharma's century as the best the opener has scored among the 23 tons he has notched up so far in his career.

Sharma, who got off to a nervous start with a couple of half chances, stroked 122 runs off 144 balls, peppered with 13 boundaries and two sixes.

"Some of the balls were bouncing around and there is always the temptation to hit yourself out of trouble but he brilliantly controlled his innings and held up one end and we never thought he was going to throw his wicket away," Kohli said.

World Cup: Kohli says, picking two spinners was masterstroke in win against South Africa

India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who bowled an impeccable spell during India's opening match in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup on Wednesday, revealed that the wicket of South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis was his favourite.

Chahal took four wickets and was having a candid conversation with Kuldeep Yadav post the match where the latter asked him about his favourite wicket.

"Faf's wicket was the best as he was playing with small forward-steps and I was drifting the ball really well. The previous two balls, I had bowled him leg spin. So on that ball, I chose to bowl on an angle so the ball drifts and hit the off stump. He couldn't pick it, he thought it was a leg spin, and that's why the ball hit the inside of his bat and hit the stumps," Chahal said in a video posted by Bcci.tv.

Rohit Sharma also displayed a brilliant performance with the bat as he hammered a century to help his side chase down a modest target of 228.

Sharma played an unbeaten knock of 122 runs off 144 balls and Chahal eulogised Sharma for his match-winning knock.

"The way Rohit Sharma played his inning, especially on this wicket; he showed the temperament that how a batsman should bat. In the beginning, it was not easy but he finished the match which is a plus point," he said. Here's the complete fixture of Cricket World Cup 2019: India will now face Australia on June 9.

India were all out for mere 92 runs by New Zealand bowlers in the fourth ODI at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Thursday.

The Lower batting order played a better game than the top players as they saved India's pride by taking them past their lowest ever total of 54 runs at Sharjah in 2000.

Yuzvendra Chahal remained unbeaten for 18 and is the highest individual runs scored today followed by Hardik Pandya's 16.

However, he was dismissed by Trent Boult. Boult has clinched five wickets in his 10 overs and gave away just 21 runs. He also bowled four maiden overs.

Earlier, New Zealand dismissed India's top six players in quick succession to dominate the fourth ODI.

At a point, with just 12 overs into the game, India has already lost six wickets and have made just 35 runs.

Put into bat, 'Men In Blue' lost opener Shikhar Dhawan for just 13 runs. Minutes later, stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma also lost his wicket for seven runs.

Both the openers were dismissed by Trent Boult, taking India's score to 23 for the loss of two wickets after eight overs.

But the damage did not stop there as Colin de Grandhomme struck twice to put his side in a commanding position. He first dismissed Rayudu and took Karthik's wickets in two successive deliveries.

Boult struck again to dismiss Shubman Gill, then young sensation who proved his cricketing prowess against Australia in Tests. It is his ODI debut game.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and invited India to bat first in the fourth ODI on Thursday.

After six overs, India's score stands at 21 for loss of one wicket.

Rohit Sharma is leading the team in absence of Virat Kohli, who has been rested for the last two ODIs.

Young Shubman Gill will make his debut for India, while left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed has replaced Mohammed Shami.

MS Dhoni is still not fit and will miss this ODI also. India are 3-0 up in the five-match series.

IND vs NZ, 4th ODI: India all-out for 92 runs, Chahal top-scores with 18

India's right-arm leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Ross Taylor and wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham in quick succession to put India in a dominating position in the first ODI at McLean Park, Napier.

Kedar Jadhav too managed to take a wicket, thanks to a brilliant catch by Kuldeep Yadav. After 24 overs, Kiwis score stands at 107 for the loss of five wickets.

Opting to bat, the host lost Martin Guptill and Colin Munro for five and eight runs respectively. Both the players suffered the same fate and were clean bowled by Shami. Meanwhile, skipper Kane Williamson is going strong but requires a partner at the other end to put up a decent target for India.

Speaking after winning the toss, Williamson said, "Looks a good surface here and we want to put a score on the board. We know India are a good chasing side but we want to put runs on the board and I'm sure the surface will play the same throughout. Just the one spinner - Mitch Santner is back and also Doug Bracewell is in. It's about balancing the side, seam-bowling all-rounder is needed and that's what Bracewell comes in. I think it will be a fair pitch regardless of whether you're bowling seam, spin or batting. We were good in the SL series but want to keep improving. Looking for a good series to be played in the right spirit."

India, on the other hand, recently ended the Australia tour by creating several historic records.

Talking about their strategy for today, skipper Kohli said, "the bowlers have played a major part in us being a top team than the batsmen really. It's a batsmen's game and the crowd come in to see fours and sixes. I feel that our side is very balanced at the moment with good depth in batting and bowling. Pretty relaxed with where we stand as a team."

"It's going to be a competitive series. New Zealand are a good side and they play with the right spirit. They are a side that everyone must look upto in terms of carrying yourself on the field. Mutual respect is always there between us. Our motivation to win games remain the same irrespective of opposition. We're not going to have any incidents," Kohli concluded.

Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal displayed a fiery spell of bowling to clinch six wickets and restrict Australia for a mere 230 runs in the third and final ODI against India on Friday.

Handscomb is also the highest scoring player with the bat as the rest nine failed to reach the fifty digit mark. Marsh contributed 39 runs and Khwaja made 34 before giving away their wickets.

Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar too struck twice after the rain break to dismiss Australian openers Alex Carey and Aaron Finch early. He also took a brilliant catch of Glenn Maxwell to hand Shami his first wicket of the game.

Apart from Kumar, Mohammed Shami also clinched two wickets and gave away 47 runs in his 9.4 overs bowled.

Put into bat, Australia's score stood at 27 for the loss of two wickets at a point.

When asked what strategy will Australia adopt for the series decider, skipper Aaron Finch said, "There might be a touch of moisture but it's still a good surface.
