<p>In a unique attempt, the Indian Army's amphibious warriors from the Pangode Military Station in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, performed Underwater Yoga. Adorning costumes that captured the three colours of&nbsp;the Indian national flag, the Army teams performed a variety of Yoga postures (asanas) underwater.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This captivating display of physical and mental agility was carried out under the guidance of an expert yoga instructor and freediver Jyothi Singh from Bond Water Sports Pvt Ltd. This unique attempt brought together the timeless practice of Yoga and the invigorating environment of water.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The event aimed to promote holistic well-being, strengthen the mind-body connection, and demonstrate the military's commitment to embracing diverse approaches to physical fitness.</p>

The experiences of Sanatan Kriya practitioners are living proof of this. Unfortunately, there are very few who understand the authentic path of Yog. The majority equates it with funny postures mis-termed as <em>asana</em> and breathing-like animals mistaken for <em>pranayam</em>. Patanjali Yogsutras were given 4500 years ago, and nowhere do they talk of twisting and turning the body into knots.<br />

There is only one line - <em>sthir sukham asanam</em>. That is a posture in which you are still and at peace. So any posture that can be maintained for long hours without movement or discomfort is an asana. Sage Patanjali is called the fountainhead of yoga.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There is no dearth of yoga teachers these days, advocating modern innovative exercises en-masse, on television or in camps, some even selling CDs, calling it yoga. There is a vast majority of the population learning and practising those exercises and paying a hefty price – not just for the course, but also in terms of their health and body.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In so many years of teaching yoga, so many have come up to me with ailments which they acquired due to the wrong practice of yoga. To quote an example, Dr Prasan Prabhakar of Lakshmi Hospital, Kochi came to me with a chronic cold. He told me that he had attended a yoga camp where he was taught a rapid breathing technique and was informed that it might result in a minor cold which would last 48 hours. The cold for him started after a week and never subsided. He could not sit in the AC room even in the scorching heat because of the cold.<br />
<br />
When he approached the organisation, the ‘instructor’ told him that at times it becomes chronic and he can do nothing about it! It is important to understand that by rapid breathing, the movement of the <em>prana</em> in the body gets disturbed and based on the degree to which the <em>prana</em> is disturbed one contracts a disease. There are five major <em>pranas</em> in the body, detailed in the Sanatan Kriya under the topic of Paanch Mahaprana. These <em>pranas</em> control vital functions in the body and have a specific location and direction, which gets disturbed owing to rapid breathing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The science of Yog&nbsp;unfolds in stages, first through elements, then consciousness and finally divinity. In Sanatan Kriya, one is introduced to the Paanch Mahaprana Dhyan to bring the elements in the body to a basic level of balance. As that happens, a practitioner’s ability of thought manifestation heightens. Gradually the practitioner is introduced to the practice of Bhuta Shuddhi or elemental purification, which has the effect of restoring the elements to their purest form.<br />

Once that happens, a person can access consciousness in its purest state and even manifest <em>devs</em> and <em>devis </em>(Gods) into creation. In advanced stages, one is introduced to the practices of <em>saiyam</em> on Surya, Chandra and Guru Shakti. Much research has been conducted on these techniques by senior doctors and they are being practised and adopted by renowned doctors around the world.&nbsp;</p>

This year, the celebrations will take place at Port Rashid, a location that holds historical significance due to its long-standing trade connections with India's Kerala.</p>

UAE to celebrate International Yoga Day at Dubai's Port Rashid

<p>India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj underscored the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding Yoga Day celebrations at the UN headquarters in New York, saying that it is one of the most anticipated events in which representatives from 195 countries are expected to participate in it.</p>

<p>Speaking to WION’s diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the Indian envoy said that Modi leading yoga celebrations on June 21 is historic and is reflective of India’s standing in the world order.</p>

<p>“There are three things why I think this year’s yoga day is significant. First and foremost is the very inclusive aspect of it, because all 195 countries are expected to participate in it. This event sort of unites people with different cultural backgrounds. Second is the alignment of yoga with the UN sustainable development goals with an emphasis on health and well-being, as yoga aligns well with SDG 3 (health), and SDG 4 (Education).”</p>

<p>“And with its emphasis on mindfulness, and being very conscious of oneself and the environment, it is also related to SDG Goal 12 (mindful consumption and production) and SDG Goal 13 (environment),” Kamboj told WION.</p>

<p>Speaking about the long-anticipated United Nations reforms, Kamboj said that the debate, which was first raised by India, is gradually gaining ground among other nations who are calling for urgent restructuring of the present order.</p>

<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a yoga session at UN headquarters for the first time in New York.</p>

<p>June 21 marks the International Day of Yoga, during which Modi will be landing in the city as part of his four-day visit to the United States.</p>

<p>“On the occasion of the 9th International Day of Yoga, the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations cordially invites you to join a Yoga session led by H. E. Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi,” an advisory for the event said, according to PTI news agency.</p>

<p>It was PM Modi who first proposed from the UN General Assembly podium to mark International Yoga Day as an annual commemoration.</p>

<h2><strong>First time</strong></h2>

<p>This will be the first time that the Indian leader will lead the yoga session at the UN Headquarters in a historic commemoration of the day.</p>

<p>The one-hour session from&nbsp;8 am&nbsp;will begin at the expansive North Lawn in the UN Headquarters, where a bust of Mahatma Gandhi—a gift from India to the UN—was installed in December last year during the country's presidency of the UN Security Council.</p>

<h2><strong>VIP guests expected</strong></h2>

<p>The historic yoga session is expected to be attended by top UN officials, ambassadors, envoys, delegates from member states as well as prominent members of the global and diaspora community.</p>

<p>During the study, the patients were asked to take up yoga or attend health education classes for a month. The two groups were also asked to take part in 75-minute sessions twice a week for four weeks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the study duration was complete, the subjects underwent a series of blood tests. The results showed that those who took up yoga had “significantly lower levels of pro-inflammatory markers” compared to the other group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Our data suggest that yoga significantly reduces inflammation among cancer survivors,” wrote one of the study authors in a report published at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting - the world’s largest cancer conference.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Clinicians should consider prescribing yoga for survivors experiencing inflammation, which may lead to a high chronic toxicity burden and increased risk of progression, recurrence, and second cancers," they added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Prescribe yoga to patients&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, Karen Mustian, the lead researcher said she was advising doctors to recommend yoga to their cancer patients as an option.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In the last 20 years, we've moved beyond asking the question, should we be encouraging things like traditional exercise yoga, tai chi for patients? The answer is yes," said Mustian.</p>

<p>Another study. also led by the University of Rochester Medical Centre, researchers found that home-based exercise prescriptions can improve outcomes in cancer patients. This time around, 100 and 73 patients aged 60 or older were enrolled in the trial and split into two - the yoga and health education class groups.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The result showed that yoga helped relieve fatigue and maintain quality of life. The researchers, based on the findings concluded that yoga was a game-changer and doctors needed to get over their preconceived notions about the ancient Indian practice.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although yet to be peer-reviewed, the study demonstrated the advice of "taking it easy", if a person was sick was not as effective as previously thought.&nbsp;</p>

While none of us would believe that alcohol and yoga could be mixed, in the video that has now gone viral, the practitioners at the Copenhagen gathering are seen sipping beer while performing yoga.</p>

<p>News agency AFP recently shared a clip of the yoga session and it stirred a debate on the internet. The video shows around 100 people performing yoga by the Copenhagen harbour. What left us spellbound was their unique approach to yoga as they held a can of beer while doing different asanas. The participants were carrying “cans of crisp, cold, refreshing beer” in their hands. They were also sipping beer amid the exercise.</p>

<p>In the video, Anne Lund, a yoga instructor, can be seen saying that she wants people to feel good and it is a bit different from what others do. “I want people to feel good, laugh and have a nice experience. It’s totally basic yoga exercises. We drink sometimes during the exercise, sometimes in between. And hopefully it’s a bit funny and a bit different. People get to go from it with a smile and feel maybe they can feel something in their body they haven’t done before,” she said.</p>

<p>As the video proceeds, we can also hear Jacob, a yoga practitioner, saying the session was free and that too, with beer which led him to take part in the event. He said, “Some of my friends told me about this little quirky event, down here. It was free and there was beer and then why not, I just showed up! It was so amazing just sitting here in the sun and getting a little bit of exercise while drinking a beer, it couldn’t be better.”</p>

<p>The viral video quickly grabbed the attention of the users and amassed over 80K views. Netizens were quick enough to react to the video. The internet appeared divided as some of them appreciated the initiative while many others criticised for maligning yoga.</p>

<p>Inadequate sleep has been linked to several health problems, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, a suppressed immune system, and endocrine disorders. Studies have also shown a correlation between lack of sleep and premature ageing, as well as the exacerbation of chronic diseases such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and kidney disease. Sleep specialists caution that individuals with insomnia should avoid becoming reliant on medication and instead consider lifestyle adjustments and rule out underlying conditions such as depression, which may be the root cause of their sleeplessness.</p>

<p>Incorporate therapies and relaxation rituals to promote better sleep, this is where yoga and naturopathy can come in handy:</p>

<p>Acupuncture is considered one of the safest methods for treating insomnia. In a small study conducted in 2017, researchers administered traditional acupuncture or sham acupuncture (where needles are not inserted as deeply) to 72 individuals with primary insomnia. Participants received treatment three times a week for four weeks.</p>

<p>The results showed that acupuncture was more effective at improving insomnia symptoms, sleep efficiency and total sleep time during treatment. Sleep awakenings and self-rated anxiety also significantly improved two and four weeks after treatment.</p>

<p>Massage Therapy: Massage therapy is a well-known stress-reducing technique that can help release the tension we accumulate throughout the day. This therapy can improve blood circulation and significantly alleviate bodily pain, which can prevent individuals from achieving a restful night's sleep.</p>

<p>Moreover, it can also unblock and release negative energy, which may contribute to overall discomfort. The calming effect of massage on the body and mind can make it easier for people to switch off and fall asleep. A massage performed in the late evening, in particular, can promote a good night's sleep.</p>

<p>Yoga: Yoga and meditation are powerful tools that can help address the underlying causes of sleep issues, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, without any negative side effects. These ancient practices serve as relaxation techniques, helping to quiet the mind and calm the body, leading individuals toward a state of inner peace.</p>

<p>Practising pranayama and meditation before bedtime can help address the root causes of sleep issues. In fact, a study reported that 55 per cent of yoga practitioners experienced improved sleep, with over 85 per cent reporting decreased levels of stress. Furthermore, there are multiple studies that have demonstrated the positive impact of yoga on sleep for individuals from various backgrounds.</p>

<p><strong>Yoga poses for better sleep</strong></p>

<p>Child's Pose or Balasana: Balasana, also known as the Child's Pose, is a kneeling yoga posture that offers a range of physical and mental benefits. This pose involves stretching the lower back while relaxing the entire body. To perform the Child's Pose, begin in a kneeling position with your buttocks resting on your heels.</p>

<p>While exhaling, lower your body forward, stretching your arms out in front of you until your forehead rests comfortably on the mat. Keep your arms relaxed and alongside your body. You will feel a stretch in your shoulders, buttocks, spine, and arms. This pose is a great way to relieve tension in the body and calm the mind.</p>

<p>Corpse Pose or Shavasana: Shavasana relaxes the nervous system, controls anxiety and stress, and brings deep rest to our body and mind. To perform this pose, lie down on the back and keep your eyes closed, and do not allow any thoughts to come into your mind. Concentrate on your natural and spontaneous breath. Stay in this position for five minutes, allowing your body to fully relax and recharge.</p>

<p>Crocodile Pose or Makarasana: It is a deeply relaxing yoga posture that involves lying on your belly with your arms crossed under your head. <p>The decision was taken at a forum titled “The Role of University Sports in Supporting the Kingdom’s Vision in Sports,” organised in the capital city of Riyadh where several experts and international leaders registered their presence, according to Arab News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reflecting on the importance of yoga, SYC chief Al-Marwaai said the decision was taken as part of achieving Vision 2030.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Yoga gives its practitioners many health benefits (for) both physical and mental well-being. One of the most important pillars of achieving Vision 2030 is to enhance participation in sports activities, and to achieve sports excellence locally, continentally, and internationally," she was quoted as saying by Arab News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Al-Marwaai added that the committee will aim to discover yoga talent in the country and hone their skills with the hope that they "represent the Kingdom in local and international tournaments".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Saudi Arabia's sports ministry has decided to host&nbsp;an event to promote yoga and has invited 11 Arab countries to participate in it. The event "Arab Youth Empowerment Program" in the country's commercial capital Jeddah saw lectures and practical sessions on yoga. The country's first Yogacharinie and Padma Shri awardee Nouf AL-Marwaai gave a brief on the advantages of yoga to the participating delegates.</p>

<p>According to the source, the 54-year-old Becker has been rigorously working out in the gym and has shed around 18 lbs. He is now teaching 45 inmates fitness, nutrition, crisis management, and a special type of yoga and meditation. <p>During a change of command ceremony on Wednesday, outgoing Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev made a space-bound reference to the war in Ukraine. He said that "despite the storms on Earth, our international "cooperation continues".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Artemyev handed Cristoforetti a golden key, which symbolised that she is the new commander of the space station. She will head until she returns to Earth on October 10.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the guidelines, the commander is responsible for all tasks performed by the crew members onboard the space station.&nbsp;</p>
