To commemorate the 100 days countdown campaign to the International Day of Yoga, 2022, the Saudi Yoga Committee announced the launch of 81 days yoga awareness program in Saudi Arabia.

The announcement was made by Nouf Al- Marawaai, president of Saudi Yoga Committee, after taking part at the virtual opening event held on April 1, announcing the beginning of the 100 days countdown campaign organised by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga under the Ministry of Ayush with the participation of 100 international countries.

The event was held to give a wider promotion and publicity to various dimensions of yoga and also to promote the 100 days countdown campaign to IDY-2022 under the theme “Health, Well-being and World Peace”.

The virtual meeting witnessed an opening speech by Al-Marwaai and then by the Director of MDNIY Dr Ishwar Basavaraddi.

Later the meeting featured health yoga protocol, yoga class with Fisal Alawaji, vinvasa yoga class with Samah Diab, Pranyama with Bhola Shanker, and meditation class with Bhola Shanker from The Himalayan Meditation Tradition.

In her speech, the president of the Saudi Yoga Committee said: “We are honoured to be part of Yoga Mahotsav 2022 and the 100 days countdown campaign of the International Day of Yoga 2022. As we prepare to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, it is very important to highlight yoga’s message for health, well-being and world peace. With today’s challenges around the world, yoga promotion is needed the most.”

She stressed that the practice of yoga is expanding remarkably in the kingdom due to its importance in physical health, and its trainers and practitioners are spread in thousands in every part of the country.

Director of MDNIY Dr Ishwar Basavaraddi noted that practising yoga is only related to the human interest, liberating the world from tension and spreading the message of love, peace, unity and good intentions.

He also praised the role of the Saudi Yoga Committee headed by Nouf Al-Marwaai in supporting and developing the sport of yoga in Saudi Arabia.

He announced that the International Day of Yoga 2022 campaign will focus on 100 days, 100 cities and 100 organisations till June 21 across the globe. “The campaign’s programme will include yoga demonstrations, workshops and seminars in India and across the globe,” he said.

It is noteworthy that the participation of the Saudi Yoga Committee in this global event comes within the framework of the joint cooperation agreement that was signed recently between the Saudi Ministry of Sports represented by the Leaders Development Institute and the Department of International Cooperation with the Embassy of India in Saudi Arabia.

The agreement aims to activate and organize the sport of yoga with the aim of setting its own standards and raising the quality of working trainers in the field of yoga.

Swami Sivananda, a 125-year-old yoga guru in India was conferred the Padma Shri award on Monday (March 21) by the country's President Ram Nath Kovind.&nbsp;

Sivananda received a standing ovation as he walked bare feet in the palatial Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan to collect the prestigious award.&nbsp;

The yoga guru prostrated before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was present during the ceremony, and the President before receiving the award.&nbsp;

Swami Sivananda was born in Pattamadai, in the Tirunelveli district of southern Indian state Tamil Nadu. He has authored 296 books on yoga, Vedanta and other subjects. His books emphasised the practical application of Yoga philosophy over theoretical knowledge.&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia's first yoga festival took place on Saturday with much fanfare in the commercial center of Jeddah. The festival was organised by the Saudi Yoga Committee (new Saudi Yoga Federation), a body under Saudi Arabia Olympic Committee, Ministry of Sports. Nouf Marwaai is president of the committee, which was formed on May 16, 2021. &nbsp;

Speaking to WION, the 2019 Padma Shri awardee said, "The idea behind holding the event was to bring yogis (yoga instructors) together. The Saudi Yoga Committee's strategy is to promote yoga in the society and encourage people to participate in yoga activity." &nbsp;

The event was organised at Juman Park, King Abdullah Economic City, Jeddah. It saw participation of a number of top Saudi yoga teachers including Marwa Khairudeen, Lana Nazer, etc. Nouf Marwaai lauded the leadership of Saudi Arabia, saying that they have been "very supportive on health and wellness, and sports activities. This is part of vision 2030" and "response from people is amazing and it's very popular." &nbsp;

Two famous yoga teachers, who were seen at the Yoga Festival in Jeddah, were Saudi national Dana Algosaibi and Lebanese national Natalie Kriedeih. Khaled Alzahrani, a Saudi yoga teacher, who has a yoga center in Jeddah was seen performing Sirsasans and other asanas. Irum Khan, an Indian national, who teaches yoga in Saudi Arabia since 2008 and yoga master Murali Krishna also participated. &nbsp;

Asked about yoga facing any backlash over religious connect, she said, "I don't think there is anything in yoga that conflicts with religion like some people claim. Of course, yoga’s background goes back to vedic philosophy and sanatana dharma. I don't think it conflicts because there are lot of practices in yoga that doesn't conflicts with religion like asanas..breathing techniques." &nbsp;&nbsp;

She explained, "I never seen anything that conflicts with religion or that Muslims can't practice yoga. It’s for health and well-being. Yoga is a kind of cultural exchange too.". &nbsp;

Remember last yoga day, Saudi Arabia had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India for the establishment of a formal "yoga protocol (standards)" for the promotion of yoga in the country. This was also the first such bilateral cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia on yoga. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Yoga has been allowed in the country since November 2017. Amid the pandemic, yoga gained popularity in the west Asian country as it was seen as a supportive practice that reduces anxiety.&nbsp;

In an interview with Al-Arabiya.net, Saudi Yoga Committee’s chief Nouf bint Muhammad Al-Maroui said, “The passion of this sport was the reason for its spread in various parts of the kingdom two decades ago.” &nbsp;

There seems to be a large base for amateurs and yoga practitioners in the kingdom. It has reached tens of thousands of practitioners and trainers in the country. Yoga has flourished in the kingdom after the Ministry of Sports launched a licence for such gyms. &nbsp;

On January 14, Makar Sankranti, the Indian Ministry of AYUSH, will host a global Surya Namaskar demonstration programme for 7.5 million individuals.

Surya Namaskar is done as a salute to the Sun on this day to express gratitude for each of its rays, which nourish all living beings, according to an Ayush ministry statement.&nbsp;

Surya Namaskar has been scientifically proven to boost immunity and energy, all of which are important for health during pandemics, according to the statement.

The Ministry stated that exposure to the sun nourishes the human body with Vitamin D, which is generally recommended in all medical branches around the world.

What is Makar Sankranti?

Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan or Maghi or simply Sankranti, sam(n)kranti here means'transfer,' is the day when the Sun enters Capricorn.

Many native festivities are held all over India as the sun advances northwards in the Hindu calendar, devoted to the deity Surya (sun).

It refers to a specific solar day in the Hindu calendar. On this auspicious day, the sun enters the zodiac sign of Capricorn or Makar which marks the end of winter months and the beginning of longer days. This is the beginning of the month of Magh.&nbsp;

The date of Makar Sankranti may change somewhat in leap years due to the addition of one day.

It falls on the 15th of January on leap years and the 14th of January otherwise.

Although there are 365.24 days in a year, we can only use 365 of them.

On leap years, we add an extra day.

The year Calendar is nearly one day behind the sun by the time of leap year, causing Makar Sankranti to fall on January 15th.

When the fix is made, Makar Sankranti is pushed back to January 14th.&nbsp;

Claiming that yoga originated in Nepal and not in India, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday said that much before the existence of India as a nation, yoga was and has been practiced in the Himalayan nation.

The prime minister was speaking at an event held at his residence Baluwatar on the occasion of International Yoga Day.&nbsp;

“Yoga originated in Nepal and not in India. There was no existence of India when Yoga started. There was no country like India because there were several fringe states when yoga came into practice in Nepal,” Oli said in his address.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Oli said Nepal could not take the practice of yoga across the globe due to which there was no international recognition.&nbsp;

“Many famous sages and Maharishis such as Patanjali, Kapilmuni, and Charaka were born in Nepal. They studied and practice here itself,” he added.&nbsp;

Oli said yoga got international recognition after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed to the UN to celebrate International Yoga Day.&nbsp;

International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on June 21 since 2015, following its inception by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.

Prime Minister Modi, in his UN address, had suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.

Nepal PM Oli claims yoga did not originate in India

In the&nbsp;first such step by any country in the Gulf region, Saudi Arabia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with India for the establishment of a formal "yoga protocol (standards)" for the promotion of yoga in the country.

The&nbsp;formal yoga standards and courses will be tailormade for the country, keeping in view local sensitivities.&nbsp;

With this, yoga has been formally recognised in the country as an important sports activity by Saudi Arabia's ministry of sports.

While yoga has been allowed in the country since November 2017, with the MoU a formal system has been put in place for its practice.&nbsp;

The MoU was signed on the 7th International Yoga Day between India's ambassador to Saudi Arabia Dr Ausaf Sayeed and Abdullah Faisal Hammad, Director General, Leaders Development Institute, Ministry of Sports.&nbsp;

The MoU has been in making for the last six-seven months.&nbsp;Yoga standards are in the advanced stages and it's understood that an announcement is in the offing with experts and&nbsp;the Saudi ministry of sport drafting the standards-compliant with local laws and norms.&nbsp;

Under the standards, formal certification of yoga trainers will start with exams, and the process of evaluation can take place.&nbsp;

The MoU also facilitates collaboration in research, education, and training in the field of yoga.

The MoU for yoga cooperation is between Leaders Development Institute, Saudi ministry of sports, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.&nbsp;Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga&nbsp;is the nodal body for planning, training, and promotion of yoga in India.

A Saudi Yoga Committee has been formed&nbsp;which will have the power of an independent yoga federation just like any other sports federation.&nbsp;

Nouf Marwaai will be heading the body.&nbsp;In 2018, Nouf also known as the first&nbsp;Saudi Yogacharya&nbsp;was honoured with&nbsp;India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri for her role in the popularisation of yoga.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel, deployed at India-China border, performed Yoga at the icy height of 18,000 feet at the snow covered Himalayan peaks on the Indian-China border on Monday. 
 
The ITBP personnel performed Yoga amid snowfall at Himalaya to mark the 7th International Yoga day. 
 
Similar to the previous years, the ITBP personnel performed Yoga on different high altitude border outposts in Ladakh ranging from 13,000 to 18,000 feet. 
 
On the event, some ITBP personnel performed Yoga at 16,000 feet in Himachal Pradesh, 14,000 feet at the bank of Pangong Tso in Ladakh, at Animal Transport School in Arunachal Pradesh`s Lohitpur with horses and near Galwan valley in Ladakh on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) where as many as 20 Indian Army personnel had laid down their lives in the clashes with Chinese Army on June 15 last year. 
 
The specialised mountain force, ITBP, is deployed on border guarding duties from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh covering 3,488 km of Indo-China Border and manning Border Outposts on altitudes ranging from 9,000 to 18,800 feet in the Western, Middle and Eastern sectors of the India-China border. 
 
Performing Yoga shows the commitment of ITBP personnel because this area in Ladakh witnesses minus 30 degree Celsius during winter, which often leads to cracking gun barrels and other issues. The road to Galwan are also few, which means soldiers have to survive in thin air while carrying all their equipments. 
 
With such a high terrain, soldiers often need time to acclimatise to their environment, or risk illness that can kill anyone in hours.

On International Yoga Day, scores of celebrations were held across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Huge participation of the local youth was seen in these events across the Valley.

Army, Police, CRPF, politicians, students&nbsp;and civilians organised events across to celebrate the day.

Due to the pandemic, SOP's were followed while celebrating the day. Last year all events were cancelled due to the pandemic. In Srinagar's famous Nehru Park in the middle of the Dal lake, youngsters held yoga sessions with the help of the Indian Army.&nbsp;

''Being a sports person, I think yoga is most important. We practice Yoga every day. I am happy to see people participating. It's not popular in Kashmir but I am happy to see people showing interest. I hope in the future this culture is promoted. Since the epidemic started we are seeing a rise in cases of depression, anxiety and suicides, I was also suffering from anxiety and being a sportsperson, It's very hard for you when you go for competitions. Yoga helps me calm down,'' said Afreen Haider, instructor.&nbsp;

The youngsters in Kashmir Valley say for mental relaxation, yoga is one of the most important exercises. The participation this time was huge and people responded in a very positive way. &nbsp;

''We want to spread a message of peace and harmony through yoga, we believe that yoga is not only an exercise or yoga is more to do with religion. It's more of mental fitness. I would say the youth should develop healthy habits&nbsp;and involve themselves in sports activities,&nbsp;'' said Faiz Dijjoo, organiser.&nbsp;

The pandemic has left everyone with anxiety and depression. People across the world were confined to their homes which led to a lot of mental pressure. The student community feels that to relieve yourself of the pressure, yoga is an important exercise. &nbsp;

''Yoga is very important for us, It's good for both mental and physical fitness. We have witnessed a pandemic and people are sitting at home. No one is able to go to work and schools are shut. We request people to do yoga for good mental and physical health. It helps us to overcome depression,” said 'Samreen Khan, a student.&nbsp;

Participation of the youngsters was applauded by the administration of Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp;

''Being a sports person, I think yoga is most important. We practice Yoga every day. I am happy to see people participating. It's not popular in Kashmir but I am happy to see people showing interest. I hope in the future this culture is promoted. Since the epidemic started we are seeing a rise in cases of depression, anxiety and suicides, I was also suffering from anxiety and being a sportsperson, It's very hard for you when you go for competitions. Yoga helps me calm down,'' said Afreen Haider, instructor. The youngsters in Kashmir Valley say for mental relaxation, yoga is one of the most important exercises. The participation this time was huge and people responded in a very positive way. ''We want to spread a message of peace and harmony through yoga, we believe that yoga is not only an exercise or yoga is more to do with religion. It's more of mental fitness. I would say the youth should develop healthy habits and involve themselves in sports activities, '' said Faiz Dijjoo, organiser. The pandemic has left everyone with anxiety and depression. People across the world were confined to their homes which led to a lot of mental pressure. The student community feels that to relieve yourself of the pressure, yoga is an important exercise. ''Yoga is very important for us, It's good for both mental and physical fitness. We have witnessed a pandemic and people are sitting at home. No one is able to go to work and schools are shut. We request people to do yoga for good mental and physical health. It helps us to overcome depression,” said 'Samreen Khan, a student. Participation of the youngsters was applauded by the administration of Jammu and Kashmir.

"All instruction in yoga shall be limited exclusively to poses, exercises, and stretching techniques," the law states. However, "chanting, mantras, mudras, use of mandalas, induction of hypnotic states, guided imagery, and namaste greetings shall be expressly prohibited".

While some people have expressed happiness over this decision, others have not supported the cause claiming yoga can lead to 'guided imagery'.

"Yoga is a very big part of the Hindu religion, and if this bill passes then instructors will be able to come into classrooms as young as kindergarten and bring these children through guided imagery, which is a spiritual exercise," Becky Gerritson, director of the conservative Alabama Eagle&nbsp;told the state senators.

Gray has called this thought process to be misplaced and misinformed. "The promoting of Hinduism argument is the only talking point these conservative groups have, and it makes them look very misinformed and miseducated on the issue," Gray told the Guardian.

He has also been perplexed by the association of people who are opposing lifting the ban. Gray has revealed that the majority of people opposing his proposal are the ones who have never practised yoga and have no direct connection with the school.

"To me, you cannot be well versed on something you never experienced. We have individuals opposing a bill that really doesn't affect them, but those individuals in education are 100% behind it," he said.

Hindu groups in the state feel this echoes the ages-old notions that led to racism in the country.

“These arguments are a reminder of the Hindu-phobia that existed in the US in the 19th and early 20th century when Hindus were portrayed as strange cult followers out to alter your mind and get you to do crazy things. It’s sad to see such Hindu-phobia still persisting,” Nikunj Trivedi, president of the Coalition of Hindus of North America exclaimed.
