In the capital Dhaka, as many as 1,850 policemen contracted the disease, and 10 died, as per government figures.&nbsp;

"They are playing a vital role staying on the streets to maintain law and order," Rajon Kumar Saha, a spokesman for Dhaka police's diplomatic security division said.

This security division was also behind the initiative of organising yoga sessions for police officials on Sunday.

"We were instructed to do what could be done to morally boost the force amid this crisis. This yoga is a part of that mission for us," Saha said, adding that up to 1,200 policemen will take part in the sessions.

Shama Makhing, a yoga teacher who led nearly 100 officers in stretching and breathing exercises early on Monday, said that the yoga would help cops maintain their physical and mental strength.&nbsp;

"They cannot skip duty," Makhing said, adding, "therefore it is important for the policemen to be fit. Yoga... can help them with their breathing."

The unit's deputy chief Muhit Kabir Sarneabat said police were mulling over introducing yoga and other physical exercises for policemen in other divisions.

Terming the Indian diaspora as 'cultural ambassadors', the President applauded them for contributing to the local society through their advanced skills and knowledge.

"We live in an age defined by knowledge, technology, and digital space. These represent new markers of our growing ties with Iceland. We are proud of your achievements. You convey an image of India that is highly mobile and highly skilled," Kovind said while addressing a gathering of the Indian community.

He underlined that yoga is immensely popular in Iceland, saying that the people of the tiny Nordic country understand the value of living in harmony with nature and oneself which are basic to the exercise.

The President called upon the Indian community to make efforts to promote Ayurveda and traditional knowledge system across the world.

Expressing happiness that Hindi would be now taught at the University of Iceland, Kovind said that the move would strengthen cultural understanding between the two countries.

Highlighting the initiatives done by the government, Kovind said, "We have set a target to become a five trillion-dollar economy by 2025. Through Jal Jeevan Abhiyaan, we are working to provide clean tap drinking water to every rural household by 2024."

The Ayushman Bharat scheme is providing health benefits to approximately 500 million people. We are committed to sourcing 175 GW of electricity from renewable sources by 2022 and we are well on our way to achieve this goal," he added.

The President said that India is looking at Iceland on how to tap geothermal energy.

"In the last five years, we have rescued over 90,000 Indians and nationals of 50 other countries caught in natural disasters or humanitarian situations overseas. As a result of these efforts, our people have new confidence in the government," Kovind remarked.

The President invited the Indian community to visit the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Earlier, Kovind interacted with an Indian business delegation. During his visit, Kovind will hold talks with his Icelandic counterpart Gudni Th. Johannesson and Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir.

He will address the India-Iceland Business Forum on September 11. He will also deliver a lecture at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik on 'India-Iceland partnership towards making a greener planet'.

This is the first visit of an Indian President to Iceland since the visit of former President APJ Abdul Kalam in 2005. During his nine-day official trip to Europe, Kovind is also slated to visit Switzerland and Slovenia.

Crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking yoga to the world, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday that the ancient Indian practice has become ambassador of the country's culture around the globe.

Shah praised Modi's efforts towards promoting Yoga and said it was due to the prime minister's initiatives that yoga has got international recognition and June 21 is now celebrated as the International Day of Yoga.

Addressing state-level yoga day celebrations organised by the Haryana government here, Shah said on December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the 'International Day of Yoga', months after Prime Minister Modi proposed the idea.

The International Day of Yoga is celebrated annually on June 21 to raise global awareness about the benefits of the ancient Indian practice.

"Modi ji has helped take yoga to the world. It has also helped promote our culture. Yoga today has become ambassador of our culture to the world and has helped attract millions across the world to our culture... It has played a key role in promoting our culture," Shah said.

Without naming anyone, Shah said there are some who point fingers by saying what will be gained by doing yoga for a day. 
 
"I want to humbly tell those pointing fingers that today, on this occasion, in 200 nations crores of people who are doing yoga will help inspire millions of children, who will take a pledge to connect yoga with their life," he said.

He said in the past when India was under foreign rule including by the Britishers, yoga was restricted to saints and seers. 
 
Shah said that later many people made their contributions to promote yoga, but international recognition came only in 2014.

"Several people held different programmes and contributed to revive yoga. But it gained recognition at the world level when country witnessed a big change in 2014 when people decided to elect Narendra Modi as the prime minister. Addressing the UN General Assembly on December 11, 2014, Modi presented our heritage before the world," the Union home minister said.

"Within 70 days of putting the proposal of observing June 21 as Yoga day, 177 countries accepted it. As a result of it, the whole world is celebrating International Yoga Day," he said.

Shah said in western nations and at other places a patent is registered for any invention, but yoga, he added, was India's gift to the world and it was for the welfare and well-being of the entire world.

Shah also expressed gratitude to saints and seers as also to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Ramdev for popularising this ancient Indian practice. 
 
Expressing happiness on a large number of people taking to yoga, the home minister said he is surprised to see a gathering of 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh attending early morning yoga camps of Ramdev.

"I want to express gratitude and thank all those who have helped promote yoga and make it as a revolution," he said.&nbsp;He congratulated the Manohar Lal Khattar government for setting up a Yoga Council in the state.

Shah highlighted the benefits of the ancient Indian practice for overall well-being, saying yoga keeps body and mind healthy.&nbsp;Yoga is showing the world the way towards a healthy life, he said. ?&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

"Yoga is the symbol of India's ancient history and diversity which is showing the world the way towards a healthy life," he tweeted after the event.

Earlier, Chief Minister Khattar touched upon steps taken by the Modi government and his own dispensation for promotion of yoga.&nbsp;He said yoga day celebrations were held at 80 places in Haryana.

On the occasion, Shah, Khattar and others performed various yoga 'asanas' including 'Kapal Bhati', 'Anulom Vilom' and 'Bhramari Pranayama'.

Gates will be opened at 3am With free bus service, which will start Thursday night, it said.

A total 400 make-shift toilets, over 200 drinking water kiosks, eight medical teams, 21 ambulances, jawans of NDRF and more than 100 CCTV cameras are in place at the venue adjacent to the Prabhat Tara school.

This year's slogan is --- Yoga for Heart-.

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu on Sunday organised a yoga event to celebrate the fifth International Day of Yoga at Nepal`s Syangboche, just above Namche Bazaar, which is the gateway to Mount Everest.

A charitable hospital in the national capital is providing treatment to cancer patients using ayurveda and yoga along with dietary and lifestyle changes.

Ahead of World Cancer Day on February 4, the founder of Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment Hospital, located in West Punjabi Bagh area, said the facility raises awareness on combating the disease and many patients help in spreading its name through word of mouth as well.

"Many patients come to us after having lost all hope in allopathic treatment. We use a four-pronged approach -- lifestyle and food habit changes, ayurvedic medicines and yoga," its founder-president Atul Singhal said.

Asked about the efficacy of ayurvedic medicine on cancer, he said, "Our patients are our biggest testimonies. They feel the benefit and tell it to others, or make videos and post those online."

"For medicine, we use 'panchgavyas', mixture of five products of cow, and we use yoga to aid in recovering.

"We change their lifestyle and food habits and ask them to forego some of them for treatment. So, instead of wheat we tell them to eat barley, black pepper instead of red chilli, jaggery instead of sugar, etc," Singhal said.

The 52-year-old said he started the facility after losing his mother to cancer in 2011.

"My mother battled cancer for three years and finally succumbed to it. So, I wanted to do something about it and I have faith in our ancient medicinal system of ayurveda. So, in 2013, we first started Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment and Research Centre which became Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment Hospital in 2015," he said.

Run by a trust, the 20-bed facility has three permanent 'vaidyas' (doctors) and a staff of about 15 people for other ancillary jobs, Singhal said.

"Irrespective of a patient or his other family's economic status, we offer treatment based on just a token sum of Rs 11,000. If a patient is poor, we ask for less amount or none if they are very poor. Our idea is to keep it a charitable cause and not a commercial one," Singhal said.

The founder of the hospital said, the facility is run under a trust which has 21 trustees, including members from well-known trading families.

"We also get funds from philanthropists and some patients, after treatment, or their family members give some endowment which helps in running the hospital," he said.

Singhal said patients come from all parts of the country, especially from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and even Jammu and Kashmir. He claimed that some patients also come from abroad.

He said the token sum is applicable for 11 days only, and after that Rs 1,000 is charged per day, as the number of beds are limited beds.

"We are planning to expand and make it a 100-bed facility," Singhal said, adding, two union ministers have visited the facility so far.

Ahead of World Cancer Day on February 4, the founder of Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment Hospital, located in West Punjabi Bagh area, said the facility raises awareness on combating the disease and many patients help in spreading its name through word of mouth as well. "Many patients come to us after having lost all hope in allopathic treatment. We use a four-pronged approach -- lifestyle and food habit changes, ayurvedic medicines and yoga," its founder-president Atul Singhal said. Asked about the efficacy of ayurvedic medicine on cancer, he said, "Our patients are our biggest testimonies. They feel the benefit and tell it to others, or make videos and post those online." "For medicine, we use 'panchgavyas', mixture of five products of cow, and we use yoga to aid in recovering. "We change their lifestyle and food habits and ask them to forego some of them for treatment. So, instead of wheat we tell them to eat barley, black pepper instead of red chilli, jaggery instead of sugar, etc," Singhal said. The 52-year-old said he started the facility after losing his mother to cancer in 2011. "My mother battled cancer for three years and finally succumbed to it. So, I wanted to do something about it and I have faith in our ancient medicinal system of ayurveda. So, in 2013, we first started Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment and Research Centre which became Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment Hospital in 2015," he said. Run by a trust, the 20-bed facility has three permanent 'vaidyas' (doctors) and a staff of about 15 people for other ancillary jobs, Singhal said. "Irrespective of a patient or his other family's economic status, we offer treatment based on just a token sum of Rs 11,000. If a patient is poor, we ask for less amount or none if they are very poor. Our idea is to keep it a charitable cause and not a commercial one," Singhal said. The founder of the hospital said, the facility is run under a trust which has 21 trustees, including members from well-known trading families. "We also get funds from philanthropists and some patients, after treatment, or their family members give some endowment which helps in running the hospital," he said. Singhal said patients come from all parts of the country, especially from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and even Jammu and Kashmir. He claimed that some patients also come from abroad. He said the token sum is applicable for 11 days only, and after that Rs 1,000 is charged per day, as the number of beds are limited beds. "We are planning to expand and make it a 100-bed facility," Singhal said, adding, two union ministers have visited the facility so far. World Cancer Day, organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and celebrated each year on February 4, is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer. This year's theme, 'We can, I can' acknowledges that everyone has the capacity to address the cancer burden, according to WHO.

His constant effort got the United Nations declare June 21 as the International Yoga Day, a move that popularised the ancient art across the world, highlighting its significance in maintaining health and peace of mind.

On December 11, 2014, the draft text received broad support from 177 Member States who sponsored the text, which was adopted without a vote. This initiative found support from many global leaders. A total of 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution, the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA resolution of such nature.

The ministry of AYUSH is constantly working toward taking the benefits of yoga to the people of country.
