Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered on the runway of Bangkok's main airport on Saturday (April 27), reaching toward the reddening sky as they laid out their mats.

Despite the early morning flights rumbling overhead, participants engaged in their yoga practice, including the downward dog pose. This unique event took place on the airport's third runway, which is still under construction.

Alongside the workout, participants were provided with beverages such as coconut, iced tea, and water to enhance their routine. Around 500 yoga practitioners and camera-ready influencers began arriving at 5:00 am, navigating in the darkness to find their designated spots on the runway.

As the sun came up, yoga instructors led the group through two sessions with high spirits, despite the pollution, industrial surroundings, and occasional airplane noise.

WION Exclusive: UNGA President Csaba Korosi highlights the significance of Yoga day

In times when the world was inhabited by barbarians as per modern historians, Vedic rishis (learned sages) were making discoveries which are yet to be made by modern science. Historic accounts narrate stories of men who engineered bridges which seem impossible to be constructed with human muscles, who brought down rains and rivers on earth, who created parallel universes, who travelled to the sun and the moon, who covered the sun with clouds at will, who appeared and disappeared and who could leave their body at their will.

Rishi Kanad brought about the Archimedes Principle, almost 2500 years before Archimedes, Sulbasutras and Shatpath Brahman describe the Pythagoras theorem much before Pythagoras. Surya Siddhanta details the sizes and shapes, motions and distances of planets and stars with remarkable accuracy. Sushruta had mastered the human body and performed surgeries like rhinoplasty.

How were the yogis and rishis able to achieve all this and that too, thousands of years ago? What is it that limits ordinary men from doing the same? The brain for an ordinary person functions at an efficiency of 7-8%, which is sufficient for the functions of the basic five senses. A human being however has 16 senses, which in turn are a function of the 92-93% brain that remains unutilised. It is this unutilised potential that was tapped into by the Vedic masters through the science of Yog.

Patanjali Yogsutras detail the various subtle and gross siddhis that come with the practice of the eight limbs of Ashtang Yog under the guidance of Guru. The basic siddhis of Vak Shakti (what you speak, happens), prosperity and abundance, beauty, glow and magnetism come with the practice of yamas. Siddhis of clairaudience and clairvoyance are a part of the practice of the niyamas. Sadhaks of Dhyan ashram conclusively proved the science of clairvoyance in a live demonstration in front of IMA doctors.

Siddhi of immunity to all weathers and environments and a steel-like body is achieved through asana, which is a posture in which you are still and at ease for long hours. The triple practice of dharana, dhyan and samadhi, which is called as 'saiyam' by Rishi Patanjali enables one to master whatever one focuses on – the strength of an elephant, the glow of sun, the beauty of moon, the workings of the internal organs, ability to become invisible and even weightless and more.

This is not mumbo-jumbo; the science of Yog has come from the rishis who revealed to us the deepest secrets of the universe, some still not conceivable through modern sciences. The experiences of Sanatan Kriya practitioners are living proof of this. Unfortunately, there are very few who understand the authentic path of Yog. The majority equates it with funny postures mis-termed as asana and breathing-like animals mistaken for pranayam. Patanjali Yogsutras were given 4500 years ago, and nowhere do they talk of twisting and turning the body into knots.

There is only one line - sthir sukham asanam. That is a posture in which you are still and at peace. So any posture that can be maintained for long hours without movement or discomfort is an asana. Sage Patanjali is called the fountainhead of yoga.

There is no dearth of yoga teachers these days, advocating modern innovative exercises en-masse, on television or in camps, some even selling CDs, calling it yoga.
In so many years of teaching yoga, so many have come up to me with ailments which they acquired due to the wrong practice of yoga. To quote an example, Dr Prasan Prabhakar of Lakshmi Hospital, Kochi came to me with a chronic cold. He told me that he had attended a yoga camp where he was taught a rapid breathing technique and was informed that it might result in a minor cold which would last 48 hours. The cold for him started after a week and never subsided. He could not sit in the AC room even in the scorching heat because of the cold.

When he approached the organisation, the ‘instructor’ told him that at times it becomes chronic and he can do nothing about it! It is important to understand that by rapid breathing, the movement of the prana in the body gets disturbed and based on the degree to which the prana is disturbed one contracts a disease. There are five major pranas in the body, detailed in the Sanatan Kriya under the topic of Paanch Mahaprana. These pranas control vital functions in the body and have a specific location and direction, which gets disturbed owing to rapid breathing.

The science of Yog unfolds in stages, first through elements, then consciousness and finally divinity. In Sanatan Kriya, one is introduced to the Paanch Mahaprana Dhyan to bring the elements in the body to a basic level of balance. As that happens, a practitioner’s ability of thought manifestation heightens. Gradually the practitioner is introduced to the practice of Bhuta Shuddhi or elemental purification, which has the effect of restoring the elements to their purest form.

Once that happens, a person can access consciousness in its purest state and even manifest devs and devis (Gods) into creation. In advanced stages, one is introduced to the practices of saiyam on Surya, Chandra and Guru Shakti. Much research has been conducted on these techniques by senior doctors and they are being practised and adopted by renowned doctors around the world.

Embark on this amazing journey of Yog - change your body, arrest the ageing process, and of course, never fall sick!

UAE to celebrate International Yoga Day at Dubai's Port Rashid

India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj underscored the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding Yoga Day celebrations at the UN headquarters in New York, saying that it is one of the most anticipated events in which representatives from 195 countries are expected to participate in it.

Speaking to WION’s diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the Indian envoy said that Modi leading yoga celebrations on June 21 is historic and is reflective of India’s standing in the world order.

“There are three things why I think this year’s yoga day is significant. First and foremost is the very inclusive aspect of it, because all 195 countries are expected to participate in it. This event sort of unites people with different cultural backgrounds. Second is the alignment of yoga with the UN sustainable development goals with an emphasis on health and well-being, as yoga aligns well with SDG 3 (health), and SDG 4 (Education).”

“And with its emphasis on mindfulness, and being very conscious of oneself and the environment, it is also related to SDG Goal 12 (mindful consumption and production) and SDG Goal 13 (environment),” Kamboj told WION.

Highlighting the importance of this event, Kamboj added, “We all know yoga is very popular, but this time another layer is being added and that is the popularity of the PM himself. So many people are thrilled that he will be leading us, and it is also the reflection of the standing of the country.”

Speaking about the long-anticipated United Nations reforms, Kamboj said that the debate, which was first raised by India, is gradually gaining ground among other nations who are calling for urgent restructuring of the present order.

Studies show that yoga can help cancer patients live a longer life. Yoga can also help reduce inflammation in the body. What are the other positive aspects of yoga? Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas | Study: Yoga cuts the risk of Cancer spreading in the body

Walking for 30 minutes a day and practising yoga can help cancer survivors improve their odds of survival as well as lower the risk of it spreading elsewhere, a new research study has shown.

The research conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Centre involved more than 500 cancer patients with an average age of 56 from across the US. They all had received treatment for the disease between two months and five years earlier.

During the study, the patients were asked to take up yoga or attend health education classes for a month. The two groups were also asked to take part in 75-minute sessions twice a week for four weeks.

Doctors should prescribe yoga to cancer patients to stop disease from spreading: Study

It may sound bizarre to consume alcohol while performing asanas, but the participants at a yoga session in Denmark seem to have indulged in beer, as a video on social media shows. While none of us would believe that alcohol and yoga could be mixed, in the video that has now gone viral, the practitioners at the Copenhagen gathering are seen sipping beer while performing yoga.

News agency AFP recently shared a clip of the yoga session and it stirred a debate on the internet. The video shows around 100 people performing yoga by the Copenhagen harbour. What left us spellbound was their unique approach to yoga as they held a can of beer while doing different asanas. The participants were carrying “cans of crisp, cold, refreshing beer” in their hands. They were also sipping beer amid the exercise.

More than 50 centuries ago, yoga's journey as an ancient Indian science of healing and exercise started somewhere in the Indus-Sarasvati civilisation in northern India. Today, it is one of the most popular holistic healthcare systems, not just in South Asia but across the world. Translated from Sanskrit, an ancient and classical language of India, the word "yoga" means "to yoke or join". It means the "union", the ultimate union between our consciousness and the higher consciousness, which some call God or divine. The word also refers to the union of body, mind and spirit, which we can achieve through various practices and postures.

Swami Sivananda once explained, "Yoga is the science that teaches us the method of uniting the individual soul with the Supreme Soul, of merging the individual will in the Cosmic Will." It is also the master key to unlocking the realms of peace and bliss.

Why yoga for stress relief?

Be it a seemingly never-ending headache, stiff spine or tightness in your shoulders, stress manifests itself in our bodies in multiple ways. And, many studies suggest that yoga might be the ultimate form of stress relief because of its breathing techniques and mindful movements. The practice helps you relax and calm your nerves even during the most anxiety-filled days, suggest experts. Wondering why? Well, according to studies, it triggers the body's parasympathetic nervous system, which when activated, signals the body and mind to relax.

Yoga also decreases the levels of cortisol, or the stress hormone, in our body. It helps with insomnia, and improves digestion, both of which are impacted by stress. It also eases depression, anxiety, and mood swings by restoring dopamine and serotonin in the brain.

Specific yogic breathing techniques like Ujjayi breath and Brahmari breath help tone the vagus nerve, which is otherwise known as the well-being nerve, and according to research, allows people to easily shift from a stressed to a relaxed state.

While the countless other benefits of yoga are enough to convince people to try out the ancient practice, it is mostly popular because of its stress-relieving effects on the mind and body. It teaches a person to manage daily stress and better tackle emotional situations as they arise.

The deep breathing practices in yoga help a person calm his mind. It also helps lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate, and improve focus on thoughts and attention. The gentle asanas or postures allow you to stretch and strengthen your muscles, ease pain, and release tension. Keep scrolling to start your yoga journey!

Yoga poses for stress relief and relaxation

Ready to head to your mat for a stress-busting session? First, start by personalising your yoga corner. Add your favourite flowers to the room decor or light your favourite candles, do what appeals the most to you.

To prep for a serene at-home practice, engage in a brief acupressure practice. Take some yoga blocks and do a little acupressure at the occipital ridge of your skull as two trigger points from traditional Chinese medicine, the Gates of Consciousness and Heavenly Pillar, are located there.

"This will help release tense necks and relieve painful headaches," Jang, who received acupressure training at the McKinnon Therapy School, told Yoga Journal.

Simply, place one yoga block on the floor and lean the second block horizontally against the first. Now, lie down on the blocks and rest your neck on the angled block. Stretch your arms outwards and relax for a few minutes before rolling to your side to return to sitting. You can also apply a little pressure on the hall of impression point, which lies between your eyebrows.

Now, you can head to the actual yoga session. Start by warming up your body with a Surya Namaskar aka Sun Salutation. Next, head to pranayama practices aka breathing practices. Initially one should start with eleven cycles of breathing, and it can be increased to one hundred and twenty-one rounds.

Yoga poses for stress relief and relaxation Ready to head to your mat for a stress-busting session? Explained! Yoga, an ancient Indian practice, for stress relief and intense relaxation: Stress Awareness Month

Sufficient sleep is a fundamental aspect of good health. However, over 30 per cent of people suffer from insomnia, and this figure increases to 40 to 60 per cent for those over 60 years old.

In India, sleep disorders are prevalent, with the country ranking as the second most sleep-deprived nation in the world.

According to a Lancet study, approximately 5.4 per cent of Indians aged 30-69, or around 28.8 million people, are at moderate or severe risk of sleep apnea, which is a prevalent sleep disorder.

Inadequate sleep has been linked to several health problems, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, a suppressed immune system, and endocrine disorders. Studies have also shown a correlation between lack of sleep and premature ageing, as well as the exacerbation of chronic diseases such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and kidney disease. Sleep specialists caution that individuals with insomnia should avoid becoming reliant on medication and instead consider lifestyle adjustments and rule out underlying conditions such as depression, which may be the root cause of their sleeplessness.

Incorporate therapies and relaxation rituals to promote better sleep, this is where yoga and naturopathy can come in handy:

Early and Light Dinner: For optimal sleep, it is recommended to consume dinner at least two-three hours prior to bedtime and to include easily digestible foods. Consuming a heavy meal close to bedtime can diminish sleep quality and hinder digestion.

Research also suggests that having an early breakfast is beneficial, as eating late increases the risk of acid reflux and acidity. It is advisable to avoid or significantly limit alcohol intake in the evening, as excessive consumption can cause significant sleep disturbances, despite its initial calming effects.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a technique that involves inserting a small needle through the skin at a specific point on the body. This process can help alleviate stress, depression, and pain, and is commonly used to treat insomnia.

Acupuncture is considered one of the safest methods for treating insomnia. In a small study conducted in 2017, researchers administered traditional acupuncture or sham acupuncture (where needles are not inserted as deeply) to 72 individuals with primary insomnia. Participants received treatment three times a week for four weeks.

The results showed that acupuncture was more effective at improving insomnia symptoms, sleep efficiency and total sleep time during treatment. Sleep awakenings and self-rated anxiety also significantly improved two and four weeks after treatment.

Massage Therapy: Massage therapy is a well-known stress-reducing technique that can help release the tension we accumulate throughout the day. This therapy can improve blood circulation and significantly alleviate bodily pain, which can prevent individuals from achieving a restful night's sleep.

Moreover, it can also unblock and release negative energy, which may contribute to overall discomfort. The calming effect of massage on the body and mind can make it easier for people to switch off and fall asleep. A massage performed in the late evening, in particular, can promote a good night's sleep.

Yoga: Yoga and meditation are powerful tools that can help address the underlying causes of sleep issues, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, without any negative side effects. These ancient practices serve as relaxation techniques, helping to quiet the mind and calm the body, leading individuals toward a state of inner peace.

Practising pranayama and meditation before bedtime can help address the root causes of sleep issues. In fact, a study reported that 55 per cent of yoga practitioners experienced improved sleep, with over 85 per cent reporting decreased levels of stress. Furthermore, there are multiple studies that have demonstrated the positive impact of yoga on sleep for individuals from various backgrounds.

Yoga poses for better sleep

Child's Pose or Balasana: Balasana, also known as the Child's Pose, is a kneeling yoga posture that offers a range of physical and mental benefits. This pose involves stretching the lower back while relaxing the entire body. To perform the Child's Pose, begin in a kneeling position with your buttocks resting on your heels.

While exhaling, lower your body forward, stretching your arms out in front of you until your forehead rests comfortably on the mat. Keep your arms relaxed and alongside your body. You will feel a stretch in your shoulders, buttocks, spine, and arms. This pose is a great way to relieve tension in the body and calm the mind.

Corpse Pose or Shavasana: Shavasana relaxes the nervous system, controls anxiety and stress, and brings deep rest to our body and mind. To perform this pose, lie down on the back and keep your eyes closed, and do not allow any thoughts to come into your mind. Concentrate on your natural and spontaneous breath. Stay in this position for five minutes, allowing your body to fully relax and recharge.

Crocodile Pose or Makarasana: It is a deeply relaxing yoga posture that involves lying on your belly with your arms crossed under your head. Rest your forehead on your wrists and allow your heels to turn outwards while letting your legs relax and flop open. Close your eyes and focus on releasing tension from your body as you breathe deeply.

Alternate Nostril Breathing or Anuloma Viloma: Anuloma Viloma has a balancing effect on the nervous system. It provides relief from mental tension, insomnia, and hypertension. To perform this, sit comfortably. Press the right nostril with the thumb and inhale through the left nostril.

Hold your breath for some time and then press the left nostril with the ring finger and exhale through the right nostril. After exhalation, inhale through the same nostril and hold your breath for some time. Then exhale through the right nostril. The exhalation must be longer than the inhalation. Practice ten rounds.

Humming Bee Breathing or Bhramari Pranayama: It is a popular yogic breathing exercise that is known to have a calming effect on the mind and nervous system, making it an effective tool for stress relief and relaxation. The vibrations created by the humming sound stimulate the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is associated with feelings of well-being and happiness. Bhramari Pranayama is also believed to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

Food and Diet

The role of food and diet in maintaining a healthy daily routine cannot be overstated. To ensure that your diet does not negatively impact your sleep or overall health, it is important to eat a healthy and balanced diet. If you struggle with insomnia, it is recommended to stop the intake of alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, as these substances can disrupt your sleep cycle and harm your health.

Additionally, it is important to reduce sugar intake, as it can cause energy bursts and uneven blood sugar levels. Instead, consume foods that promote calm sleep, such as carbohydrate snacks like whole-grain crackers, which are rich in vitamin B6. Foods that are high in magnesium, such as wheat bran, cashews, whole grains, almonds, legumes, and seeds, are also recommended to aid in better sleep.

Continuing to practice naturopathy and yoga techniques regularly is crucial to achieving better sleep and relieving sleep disorders. It is important to maintain consistency in the efforts, and within three months of regular practice, one can expect to see significant improvements in sleep quality, as well as daytime energy levels, and overall performance.
