<p>Indian spiritual guru Sadhguru has expressed his disappointment over Yoga entering as a “sport” in the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), announced on Sunday (Sep 8) that Yogasana will now be a part of the Asian Games calendar as a demonstration sport. The decision was made after the resolution for the same was passed unanimously at the 44th General Assembly of OCA. The sports organisation also elected India’s Randhir Singh as the OCA president for a term of four years from 2024 to 2028.</p>

<p>"Yoga will be a demonstration sport in Nagoya as the calendar for the 2026 Asian Games has already been made and approved," said Randhir.</p>

<p>"In 10 days time we have managed to convince all members and include yoga, which is being promoted by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”</p>

<p>This will be the first time that yoga, which originated in India, will be performed on an international stage as a big sporting event. The promotion of yoga at the global level was one of the Modi administration’s special agendas. In September 2014, PM Modi suggested that&nbsp;June 21 be celebrated as International Yoga Day, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Sadhguru, the founder of Isha Foundation based in Coimbatore, is of the opinion that yoga is not meant to be a competitive sport but a method of self-discovery and self-evolution.</p>

<p>"It is deeply disturbing and disappointing that #Yoga is entering an arena which is essentially a competitive sport arena. Yoga cannot be a competition," said Sadhguru on X.</p>

<p>“Yoga is a powerful tool &amp; mechanism for self-evolution- to raise a human being from limited possibilities to unlimited perception and experience of life. This should not be done in competition with somebody else.”</p>

'Reducing Yoga to circus': Sadhguru reacts to Yoga entering as sport in 2026 Asian Games

<p><strong>Golden Temple controversy:&nbsp;</strong>A woman said she was getting death threats on social media after for performing yoga inside the famous Golden Temple in India's Punjab. Archana Makwana, an Instagram influencer and yoga practitioner, visited the temple on June 21 and observed International Yoga Day by performing 'her favourite' Shashank asana inside the premises. Her action was immediately condemned by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the body responsible for the temple's administration. Even a police complaint was filed against Makwana for 'hurting' Sikh sentiments and dignity.</p>

<h2><strong>Why SGPC raised objections?</strong></h2>

<p>According to SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami, the woman left the temple without offering prayers. Dhami also accused the woman of deliberately ignoring the sanctity and historical importance of the holy place and committing 'heinous acts.'</p>

<p>Golden Temple General Manager Bhagwant Singh Dhangera objected to the woman posting the photos and videos on social media.</p>

<p>The SGPC also sacked three of its employees for negligence and fined them around Rs 5,000 each.</p>

<p>Amidst the controversy, the influencer has now removed all photos and videos of her visit to the holy place from social media and has issued an apology.</p>

<p>"I was unaware that practicing yoga in the Gurdwara Sahib premises could be offensive to some as I was just paying my respect to him and didn't mean any harm to anyone," Makwana said.</p>

<p>India's sports administrators would be "lobbying" hard during the upcoming Paris Olympics to brighten the country's chances of hosting the 2036 Games where they will push for the inclusion of indigenous disciplines like yoga, kho kho and kabaddi if their ambitious bid is successful.</p>

<p>The Sports Authority of India's Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) presented its detailed report on the measures needed for a successful bid to new sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday.</p>

<p>"We met the new Sports Minister yesterday and handed him the report. The minister said he would need a few days to go through it. But he asked us to prepare another report on how sports can be a career option in the country, how to build interest among youth, how to bring private players into sports," a senior member of the MOC told PTI on conditions of anonymity.</p>

<p>"We are way ahead in preparing for the Olympic bid which will take place after Paris. But we will have to do a lot of lobbying with IOC during the Paris Games and we are completely prepared," the member added.</p>

<p>The inclusion of host country preferences will be a discussion for much later as the hosting rights of the Games have not been finalised. The decision is likely only after the International Olympic Committee has a new President after elections next year.</p>

<p>If India's bid succeeds at all, the proposed events will first have to be introduced as demonstration events in the 2032 Brisbane Games before getting a final go-ahead.</p>

<p>During the International Olympic Committee (IOC's) Congress in Mumbai last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed India's ambition to host the Games in 2036, stating that the administration would "leave no stone unturned" in bringing the showpiece to the country for the first time.</p>

<p>The MOC member said that while the inclusion of these sports would help in enhancing India's medals tally in the 2036 Olympics, but the road ahead is not easy as the country will have to extend all possible support in building the base for these disciplines to a minimum number of participating nations.</p>

<p>"The sports ministry asked the MOC to prepare a detailed report about our readiness for 2036 Olympics, including identifying new sporting disciplines which a host nation can pitch for, how to control doping menace, bringing more accountability in the working of the national federations and identifying private entities who are interested in investing in sports," the member told PTI.</p>
