In late March, Heather Davis and her then-fiancé, Nick Gray, gave a deposit to a nonprofit garden club venue in the Tampa, Florida, area for their Dec. 3 wedding. A signed contract followed days later. Then they were removed from the calendar, and their deposit was returned.

“I got an email telling me we had been bumped because they double booked,” said Davis, 29, a supply chain consultant for ArganoArbela, a technology consulting firm based in Irvine, California. “There was panic and anger. I thought, ‘This can’t be right, this can’t be real.’”

The couple’s search for a replacement site proved challenging. “Ninety-five percent of everything we looked at after we got the email was booked,” Davis said.

They then turned to a nontraditional option: a cigar factory.

Pandemic postponements paired with post-pandemic engagements have made finding availability at typical spaces — hotels, wineries, upscale restaurants and resorts — increasingly difficult.

As a result, many couples have been forced to get creative in their searches, considering everything from bowling alleys and movie theaters to bookstores and libraries. Here are four outside-the-box venues that can host nuptials.

Factories

The J.C. Newman Cigar Co. in Tampa, where Davis and Gray booked their wedding, is one of the country’s oldest family-owned cigar makers. Last year, the facility, which makes 50,000 to 60,000 machine-rolled cigars and 300 hand-rolled cigars daily, added events to their list.

“We didn’t realize it would be such a wanted experience,” said Karissa DiPillo, the company’s event and community partnership coordinator. “We thought we’d only get a few couples. We already have 23 weddings booked in 2022 with every Saturday in October and November taken.”

Aside from a lack of availability at more traditional venues, DiPillo attributed the upswing in interest to couples wanting distinctive spaces and experiences. “We do the cocktail hour on the first floor, which is where the store and museum are; our reception desk doubles as a bar, and cigar rolling machines are used as tables,” DiPillo said. “The second floor is the hospitality room where we do dinner and dancing. The third floor is where we have the ceremony.”

The space can accommodate 150 guests. The cost to rent one floor is $4,500; each additional floor is $500. The space is available for rent from 10 a.m. to midnight. Tables, chairs, parking and security are included. Catering is extra.

Bookstores

For bibliophiles, shops like Manhattan’s Housing Works Bookstore and the Strand offer nostalgic, romantic and cozy settings. The Strand hosts weddings in its rare book room; for events at Housing Works Bookstore, the lighting on its mahogany bookshelves is dimmed and votive candles are added to its spiral staircases. Ceremonies there usually happen in one of the nooks under the balconies, while sit-down dinners, cocktails and dancing occur on the main floor.

“Over the past four or five months we’ve seen a 40% increase in inquiries,” said Elizabeth Koke, creative director at Housing Works, a New York City-based nonprofit group with a focus on fighting AIDS and homelessness.

The organization’s mission, she added, “is appealing to folks who want to spend their special day giving back. All the proceeds go to Housing Works services: housing, health care and advocacy for social justice.”

At Housing Works Bookstore, Koke said that “the rate of bookings hasn’t changed, so we are still doing 40 to 50 weddings a year.” But, she said, “We are booking further in advance, especially since so many people want a Saturday.”

Capacity for a seated dinner is 135; for cocktails, it is 175. Costs for a five-hour event include a $5,000 tax-deductible membership fee, plus another $5,000 to $10,000 for bar pricing, rentals and staffing. Catering is additional.

Drive-In Movie Theaters

In 2016, Four Brothers Drive-In, and its adjacent restaurant in Amenia, New York, in Dutchess County, added weddings to their offerings. John Stefanopoulos, an owner of Four Brothers, along with the nearby Millerton Inn, in Millerton, New York, said bookings have increased since the start of the pandemic.

“Once COVID happened, people went nuts. It amplified the movement to do nontraditional weddings,” he said. “Couples are going to local places rather than franchises.”

Stefanopoulos cited the desire for off-the-beaten-path experiences and outdoor options as attractions. Plus, couples have the opportunity to play their favorite film in the background. “We usually do the reception and cocktail party on our patio,” he said. “The ceremony takes place under the tents, and dinner and dancing happen in front of the big screen so you can watch while you’re eating.”

An eight-hour event for up to 200 people at Four Brothers costs $30,000 to $45,000 for the space, movie, food and service. Add-ons like tents, tables, chairs, DJ, photographer and flowers, or any other arrangements that Four Brothers can provide, such as shuttle buses, will increase the cost by another $10,000 to $15,000.

Floral Studios

FlowerSchool New York is a floral design school by day and a venue space, known as ILA Penthouse, at night. Everything from designing, staffing, planning and executing the plant-focused menu happens in-house at its more than 4,000-square-foot space on the seventh floor of a building in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.

“The amount of venues and staffing has decreased while people getting married has increased,” said Calvert Crary, the school’s executive director, who estimates the space will host 100 weddings next year.

Crary said flowers are part of life’s celebratory occasions and speak to all guests. “A floral design studio makes sense to host a wedding because we have a strong aesthetic and tons of flowers,” he said. “Setting them up is really easy because they’re all here as opposed to moving them to another location.”

The space, which starts at $4,000 for a six-hour rental and costs $500 per hour after that, can accommodate 200 guests for cocktails or 150 for cocktails and dinner, and includes flowers and tables with décor, linens and chairs. In-house catering and botanically infused cocktails are priced per person in addition.

All of the décor, Crary added, “is either composted or reused by us. We have a strict no-single-use-plastics décor policy.”

Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation watchdog on Monday de-rostered flight crew of SpiceJet plane that was chartered as a wedding destination in the sky. A counple got married in the plane with more than 100 attendees onboard. The images of the 'ceremony' have gone viral on the social media.

"Crew members are off rostered. Airline directed to lodge a complaint against those not following COVID-19 appropriate behaviour with relevant authorities," a DGCA official told ANI.

Pictures of a Madurai-based couple’s wedding that took place on board a chartered commercial aircraft that flew between Madurai and Tuticorin, have gone viral on social media.

What’s caught netizens’ attention is the manner in which the family and wedding attendees are seen blatantly violating COVID-19 norms, with very few wearing masks and the others not wearing them at all or wearing it improperly. This comes at a time when Tamil Nadu is witnessing the peak of COVID-19 with nearly 36,000 daily cases and is in the midst of a state government-ordered Lockdown.

It is said that the couple, who are based out of Goripalayam in Madurai, had tied the knot sometime last week, with limited guests as per the 50-attendee cap set by the government.

However, as the state government announced temporary relaxations to lockdown restrictions on Saturday and Sunday, the families seem to have arranged a chartered flight to have a special wedding with more attendees. It is said that the wedding guests were all tested RT-PCR negative. However the claim has not been verified.

Going by the pictures and videos of this wedding, there are over 100 people seated in the flight, with hardly any adherence to prevalent COVID-19 norms in the Indian Aviation sector. Generally, those taking domestic flights in India have to be temperature checked, masked, are provided face shields, sanitizers, etc to ensure safety of all on board.

WION had reached out to the concerned airline for a clarification and has understood that their plane, a Boeing 737 was chartered by a Madurai travel agent for a group that wanted a post-wedding joy ride. “The client was clearly briefed on Covid guidelines to be followed and denied permission or any activity to be performed on board. The approval for this flight was taken as joy ride for the wedding group,” read the statement from SpiceJet.

According to the airline, the agent and passengers were repeatedly briefed in detail on the Covid safety norms at the airport and in-flight, and also about the DGCA protocols restricting photography and videography.

“Despite repeated requests and reminders the passengers did not follow Covid guidelines and the airline is taking appropriate action as per rules,” the airline added.

For one week from Monday, Tamil Nadu is in a total lockdown, where even grocery and vegetable shops would be shut. Vegetables and fruits would be sold on carts and vehicles that are authorised to do so by the civic bodies of respective districts. Only medical shops, fuel stations, ATMs and essential government offices will be open, while banks can function with one-third staff. E-commerce deliveries can operate from 8 am until 6 pm. Hotels will function from 6 am to 10 am, 12 noon to 3 pm and 6 pm to 9 pm and provide only takeaways, during which food delivery services can function.

However, the latest government order issued pertaining to this lockdown does not provide information on whether weddings are permitted and the crowd restrictions, crowd restrictions at funerals, etc. It also does not make a mention on availability of cabs, autos, permissions required for traveling to vaccination centres, etc. There is also confusion over whether customers can visit banks, since the banks themselves can function with 1/3rd staff.

Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation watchdog on Monday de-rostered flight crew of SpiceJet plane that was chartered as a wedding destination in the sky.

The groom’s family completely depended on Google Maps to reach the wedding venue.
If 2020 was the year of the Zoom wedding, 2021 promises to be a year of after-parties.

COVID-era newlyweds who pared down their guest lists and exchanged vows via live stream are planning full-on second weddings. But with those plans come an awkward set of etiquette questions. Is it OK to ask virtual guests to attend an in-person reception a year later? Should you expect gifts? And what do you name this event? A vow renewal? An anniversary reception? A sequel?

After calling off plans for a big wedding last May, Erin Wronka, 27, sprinted to organize a 20-person ceremony in July in Tampa, Florida, where she grew up. Sixty guests joined on Zoom. Now, she and her husband, Michael Baldwin, 26, are planning a 120-person reception at their original venue, the Manor in West Orange, New Jersey, on Aug. 13. She’s been calling the party “Part Two.”

“When we were going to tell our family about the new date, we were like, ‘They’re going to laugh at us,’” Wronka, a public relations executive in Clark, New Jersey, said. “They’re going to think we’re so annoying. They just celebrated us.”

But the couple knew the delayed reception was right for them. “One day we could tell our kids this: how we got married in a pandemic and got to party twice,” she said.

According to a recent survey by the Knot, 32% of couples who planned to marry in 2020 pushed their receptions to 2021 or later. And a third of newlyweds who had both a ceremony and a reception last year plan to have another, larger celebration in the future.

While the etiquette of these post-pandemic receptions is unsettled, wedding planners and couples alike say these events provide an opportunity for loved ones to gather without the pressure of a wedding.

“If something goes wrong, it’s not like, ‘Oh my God, the wedding day, the most important day of our lives is ruined,’” said Elizabeth Hilbert, a product marketing manager in San Diego. “We’re married. We’re just here for a good time.”

Hilbert, 26, and her longtime partner, Anish Tondwalkar, 26, a software engineer, married in a Hindu ceremony in December in the living room of the groom’s parents. Only immediate family members attended; their grandparents watched via Zoom. They are planning a reception close to their first anniversary, although they may postpone depending on pandemic conditions.

“Maybe it’ll be a 1 1/2-year anniversary or a two-year anniversary slash wedding reception,” Tondwalkar said.

If you’re wondering whether to have a post-COVID wedding blowout, here are some things to keep in mind.

Anniversary Reception

Many couples are planning a reception on their first wedding anniversary. “It almost reminds me of a first birthday party,” said Kim Forrest, a senior editor at WeddingWire. “There’s such a big deal about that first year.”

An anniversary party can include some of the traditions of a typical reception, but it doesn’t have to. “This is the couple’s opportunity to be creative in whatever way they want,” said Dayna Isom Johnson, a trend expert for Etsy. “It’s really just about how they can bring their love story back to life and celebrate it with their friends and family.”

Consider writing new vows for a vow renewal, or simply presenting a recap of your wedding. “We do have some couples who will be debuting their wedding video from the ceremony that took place last year so that guests can be a part of the original moment,” said Kate Murtaugh, a wedding planner and event designer in Boston area.

And if you missed out on rituals like the first dance or cake-cutting, don’t be afraid to incorporate or remix them in the reception, like with an anniversary cake topper.

Sequel Wedding

If you got married in private, without friends and family tuning in remotely, you have more options. Enter the sequel wedding.

This tradition is nothing new. In some countries where civil ceremonies are required, like France and Mexico, it’s common to have a symbolic ceremony and reception after the couple has been legally married.

Allison and Connor Weins married last September at Novelty Hill-Januik Winery in Woodinville, Washington. A friend officiated, and two other friends witnessed. Their 100-person wedding in Seattle will take place Sept. 5, the day before their first anniversary, with both a ceremony and reception. (COVID restrictions could dictate a smaller guest list.)

“The advantage of doing the elopement was that we did not have to worry about our parents being in the room, so we could say vows that were maybe a little bit funnier,” Connor Weins, 29 and a software development manager, said.
But it was no replacement for a full wedding. “I still haven’t gotten a chance to wear my wedding dress, which is actually a key thing I’m most disappointed about,” Allison Weins, a 28-year-old product manager, said. “We are still planning to do the walk down the aisle and do first looks and have a more family-friendly set of vows. Because I do think the joy of having a wedding is it’s not only about commemorating the relationship that we have but all the people who have helped us become who we are, who will support us in the future.”

Guest Communication and Gifts

If you’ve already sent out multiple save-the-date and change-the-date cards, it can feel awkward sending more notices. “Everyone was starting to make fun of us. They’re like, ‘Our whole fridge is you guys,’” Wronka said. “I was like, we can’t send another piece of mail.” She opted to send digital invitations, with paper invitations to come a few months before the reception.

Couples should be open and honest with guests. “These are the closest people to you,” Johnson at Etsy said. “These are people you can openly communicate with.” The medium, she said, isn’t as important as giving people “the lowdown of where you guys are and what the next steps will be.”

For anniversary receptions, Forrest recommends sending printed invitations to match the event’s importance, “and just skipping the language that refers to a ceremony.”
Gift-giving etiquette depends on your original plans. Did you already have a registry for a postponed or cancelled wedding? It’s fine to keep those gifts, but don’t create an expectation for guests to gift twice. “It’s completely up to the attendees if they want to gift more than just that first time,” Johnson said.

And, if you’re wondering whether it’s OK to require guests to be vaccinated: “It’s really whatever the bride and groom are comfortable with. They’re the boss,” said Christian Weiler, an owner of Epic Events, a wedding and event planning company in greater San Diego. “So anything they want is appropriate.”

Attire and Other Details

Anniversary receptions are “going to run a little bit more on the casual side,” Forrest, of WeddingWire, said. “It could be a great opportunity to choose something more fashion-forward.” This might include a bridal jumpsuit or a shorter dress.

Decorations, too, can be less formal. “We’re going to see really unique and interesting décor come out of these anniversary receptions and sequel weddings because it’s all about having fun and celebrating,” Forrest said. “Brighter colours exaggerated florals, really cool lighting.”

Consider getting creative with paper, the classic material used to mark first anniversaries. “It’ll be interesting to see how couples can incorporate that material into the celebration,” Johnson said.
You Can Still Cancel

Even as Americans slowly get vaccinated and prepare to re-enter society, it’s far from clear when parties as we once knew them will be safe. If the uncertainty makes you uneasy, you can still plan a wedding that replaces the need for a reception.

“We’re really anxious that this September is still not going to be safe,” Weins said. “And the thought of pushing it again just feels like stringing all our friends along.” If they have to call it off, they plan to rent out bars and throw a series of mini receptions in different cities. “We call it our wedding roadshow,” she said.

Last June, Anne-Marie Hantman, 31, and Rohan Thakkar, 32, hired a videographer to stream their Hindu and Christian ceremonies to an audience of more than 500, with group chats and FaceTime calls with family and the bridal party throughout the day.

Hantman, a higher education administrator, and Thakkar, a business systems manager, kept thinking they would eventually host a reception in person. But with no end to the pandemic insight, planning anything felt impossible.

It also felt unnecessary; the couple had gotten everything they wanted from their live-streamed event. “We got married in a beautiful, unique way,” Thakkar said. “And folks were still raving about how much fun they had.”

Anniversary Reception Many couples are planning a reception on their first wedding anniversary. “It almost reminds me of a first birthday party,” said Kim Forrest, a senior editor at WeddingWire. “There’s such a big deal about that first year.” An anniversary party can include some of the traditions of a typical reception, but it doesn’t have to. “This is the couple’s opportunity to be creative in whatever way they want,” said Dayna Isom Johnson, a trend expert for Etsy. “It’s really just about how they can bring their love story back to life and celebrate it with their friends and family.” Consider writing new vows for a vow renewal, or simply presenting a recap of your wedding. Sequel Wedding If you got married in private, without friends and family tuning in remotely, you have more options. (COVID restrictions could dictate a smaller guest list.) “The advantage of doing the elopement was that we did not have to worry about our parents being in the room, so we could say vows that were maybe a little bit funnier,” Connor Weins, 29 and a software development manager, said. Because I do think the joy of having a wedding is it’s not only about commemorating the relationship that we have but all the people who have helped us become who we are, who will support us in the future.” Guest Communication and Gifts If you’ve already sent out multiple save-the-date and change-the-date cards, it can feel awkward sending more notices. “These are people you can openly communicate with.” The medium, she said, isn’t as important as giving people “the lowdown of where you guys are and what the next steps will be.” For anniversary receptions, Forrest recommends sending printed invitations to match the event’s importance, “and just skipping the language that refers to a ceremony.” Gift-giving etiquette depends on your original plans. “So anything they want is appropriate.” Attire and Other Details Anniversary receptions are “going to run a little bit more on the casual side,” Forrest, of WeddingWire, said. “Brighter colours exaggerated florals, really cool lighting.” Consider getting creative with paper, the classic material used to mark first anniversaries. “It’ll be interesting to see how couples can incorporate that material into the celebration,” Johnson said. You Can Still Cancel Even as Americans slowly get vaccinated and prepare to re-enter society, it’s far from clear when parties as we once knew them will be safe.
