<p>This prompted her to write a letter to Democrat Dave Koehler, her state senator, urging him to consider protective legislation for these children.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The law</strong></h2>

<p>Influenced by her letter, last week, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker signed into law an amendment to the state's Child Labor Law.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among other things, the new law allows teenagers over the age of 18 to sue their parents if they were featured in monetised social media videos and not adequately compensated. These rights mirror the rights held by child actors.</p>

<p>The new law draws inspiration from the 1936 "Jackie Coogan's Law," which was designed to prevent parents from exploiting child actors' earnings.</p>

<p>Starting July 1, 2024, parents in Illinois will be obligated to allocate 50 per cent of earnings from a video's content into a blocked trust fund for the child 'influencer'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The exact amount, however, will depend on the duration for which the child is featured in the video. For instance, if a child appears in 50 per cent of a video, they'll be liable to receive 25 per cent of the earnings. Similarly, for a video they're in 100 per cent, they will get 50 per cent of the earnings.</p>

<p>However, this rule applies only when a child appears on screen for more than 30 per cent of the vlogs shared in a one-year period.</p>

<p>Talking to CNN, Senator Koehler said that they "understand that parents should receive compensation too because they have equity in this, but we don't want to forget about the child."</p>

<h2><strong>Why is such a law necessary?</strong></h2>

<p>Recently, there has been a rising trend of YouTube parent vloggers and social media influencers posting frequent videos sharing personal details about their lives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Children often play a significant role in these monetised videos, yet there is no legal requirement for parents to share the video earnings with the children.</p>

<p>Similarly, kid influencer&nbsp;accounts that often earn as much as $20,000 for sponsored posts rarely benefit the children. These accounts are managed by parents due to age restrictions on social media platforms.</p>

<p>"We know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetise kids being on videos. If money is being made and nothing is set up for the children, it's the same thing as a child actor," said Koehler.</p>

<p>Experts say that this legislation "is a long time coming." Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor studying social media influencer communities, expressed hope that other US states will follow Illinois' example.</p>

<p>She said, "Social media labour and careers are becoming increasingly common and viable forms of income, and it’s important that the law catches up with technology to ensure minors aren’t being exploited."</p>

<p>As per the chef, edible insects come in a variety of flavours, from nutty,&nbsp;crispy, to cheesy, citrusy and coconutty. "What I'm&nbsp;trying to do is present people with this wonderful cornucopia of flavours, textures and ideas of how to cook with edible insects."</p>

<h2><strong>From 'ew' to 'yum'</strong></h2>

<p>To normalise the consumption of insects, Yoon encourages integrating them into familiar dishes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When people ask me how they should integrate crickets or insects into their food, one of the favourite ways I like to do it is simply in my favourite foods, says the chef.</p>

<p>"You don’t have to think about making a new dish with a new ingredient, but if you like to make fried rice like I do, I love making fried rice with crickets. I love adding crickets to my mac and cheese. You can add the cricket powder to the cheese sauce," he adds.</p>

<p>As per a 2013 report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) around the globe, around two billion people eat insects as a sustainable source of protein.</p>

<p>As per recent studies, the livestock industry is responsible for between 14 to 17 per cent of man-made greenhouse emissions.</p>

<p>In comparison, insects like crickets need&nbsp;significantly less feed to produce the same amount of protein as traditional livestock. For instance, these need six times less feed than cattle, half the feed needed by pigs and broiler chickens, and four times less than sheep.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As weird as it may sound to you, this movement to embrace insects as a nutritious and eco-friendly protein source is not new.&nbsp;In Europe, an estimated nine million people consumed insects and their derivatives in 2019. <p>The pope "recalls the need to be vigilant and to work so that a logic of violence and discrimination does not take root in the production and use of such devices, at the expense of the most fragile and excluded: injustice and inequalities fuel conflicts and antagonisms," said the statement.</p>

<p>He said there was an urgent need to align the very concept of AI and its use in a responsible way "so that it may be at the service of humanity and the protection of our common home, requires that ethical reflection be extended to the sphere of education and law."</p>

<p>"The protection of the dignity of the person, and concern for a fraternity effectively open to the entire human family, are indispensable conditions for technological development to help contribute to the promotion of justice and peace in the world," added the statement.</p>

<p>As per census data, nearly 16 million people aged 65 and older were living solo in 2022. This is three times the number of older Americans living alone in the 1960s.</p>

<p>CBS News reports that there are many reasons behind this shift in the society — including the economic gains made by women after entering the workforce and the changing attitudes towards marriage.</p>

<p>The term 'grey divorce' was popularised about a decade ago by Susan L. Brown, co-director of the National Center for Family &amp; Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University. It refers to the divorce of people over the age of 50,&nbsp;sometimes after decades of marriage.</p>

<p>"Well over a third of people who are getting divorced now are over the age of 50," says Brown.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We just can't ignore that group anymore."</p>

<p>Researchers found that between 1990 and 2010, in the US, divorce rates for people over the ages of 50 have doubled. The rise has continued over the years and is still going strong.</p>

<p>Some recent example of grey divorces that made the headlines are Bill and Melinda Gates, and more recently Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who just this week announced separation after 27 years of marriage.</p>

<h2><strong>Divorce trends</strong></h2>

<p>Grey divorces are on a rise, both among celebrities and the general public, reports CBS. As per Brown, while divorce rates overall are declining, "older adults are really bucking the trend," this is especially true for those over 65 years of age.</p>

<p>"This means more and more people are going to be ageing, probably, alone, and outside of marriage, certainly," she says.</p>

<p>Susan Myres, a family law specialist based in Houston, says that while it may sound illogical to end a marriage this late in life, there are actually plenty of reasons behind this.</p>

<p>"I had one client tell me, 'I do not want to die next to that man – I'm out'," she recalls.</p>

<p>This as per her happens when couples sometimes drift too far apart. In other cases, this is due to abuse or even shocking transgressions. Many older adults, especially those in their 80s, feel whatever time they have left is too precious to spend with the wrong person.</p>

<h2><strong>How pandemic helped rock the boat</strong></h2>

<p>Myers says that the pandemic has also contributed to this awakening.</p>

<p>As the world battled the Covid pandemic, more and more people realised the difference in opinions, perspective them and their partners may have when in comes to a number of things, like masks, vaccine, etc.</p>

<p>A CNN report from January 2022 showed that this difference of opinion also stretched to the vaccination of children.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Life as a single, older adult</strong></h2>

<p>As per the report, grey divorces also come with some financial troubles for the couple. Traditionally, couples tend to create a "nest egg" together. This means they save money for their old age, together.</p>

<p>Divorce cuts this in half, and some have reported a significant drop in their standard of living after a divorce later in life.</p>

<p>That being said, the rising trend of people living together isn't merely fuelled by 'grey divorce'. Many older people living on their own as per the researchers were widowed and a growing share reported never being married.</p>

<p>"There are many more of us than people realise who don't see living single or living alone as some sort of burden, but instead embrace it as something that we really just love," says researcher and psychologist Bella DePaulo.</p>

<h2><strong>Trend set to intensify</strong></h2>

<p>Currently, around 28 per cent of people over the ages of 65 are living alone in the US. This number has, for the most part, stayed consistent in recent years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, as per CBS News, this number is climbing, as the Baby Boomer generation — most of them aged 59 to 77 — gets older.</p>

<p>Sociologist Markus Schafer of Baylor University says this trend is a "two-sided phenomenon." On one hand, people are enjoying a greater autonomy, on the other, they are 'lonely'.</p>

<p>Many studies have pointed to the fact that loneliness and social isolation come&nbsp;with significant health consequences. Most recently, in April, a study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH/FHI) revealed that the end of a marriage could bring an individual serious cognitive health problems.&nbsp;Researches analysed the marital status of people aged 44 to 68 years over a 24-year period and found that a person's marital status affects their chances of clinical diagnosis of dementia or mild cognitive impairment after the age of 70.</p>

Brown, co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University. It refers to the divorce of people over the age of 50, sometimes after decades of marriage. "Well over a third of people who are getting divorced now are over the age of 50," says Brown. "We just can't ignore that group anymore." The rise has continued over the years and is still going strong. Some recent example of grey divorces that made the headlines are Bill and Melinda Gates, and more recently Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who just this week announced separation after 27 years of marriage. Divorce trends Grey divorces are on a rise, both among celebrities and the general public, reports CBS. As per Brown, while divorce rates overall are declining, "older adults are really bucking the trend," this is especially true for those over 65 years of age. "This means more and more people are going to be ageing, probably, alone, and outside of marriage, certainly," she says. Susan Myres, a family law specialist based in Houston, says that while it may sound illogical to end a marriage this late in life, there are actually plenty of reasons behind this. How pandemic helped rock the boat Myers says that the pandemic has also contributed to this awakening. As the world battled the Covid pandemic, more and more people realised the difference in opinions, perspective them and their partners may have when in comes to a number of things, like masks, vaccine, etc. A CNN report from January 2022 showed that this difference of opinion also stretched to the vaccination of children. Life as a single, older adult As per the report, grey divorces also come with some financial troubles for the couple. Traditionally, couples tend to create a "nest egg" together. This means they save money for their old age, together. Divorce cuts this in half, and some have reported a significant drop in their standard of living after a divorce later in life. That being said, the rising trend of people living together isn't merely fuelled by 'grey divorce'. Many older people living on their own as per the researchers were widowed and a growing share reported never being married. "There are many more of us than people realise who don't see living single or living alone as some sort of burden, but instead embrace it as something that we really just love," says researcher and psychologist Bella DePaulo. Trend set to intensify Currently, around 28 per cent of people over the ages of 65 are living alone in the US. This number has, for the most part, stayed consistent in recent years. However, as per CBS News, this number is climbing, as the Baby Boomer generation — most of them aged 59 to 77 — gets older. Sociologist Markus Schafer of Baylor University says this trend is a "two-sided phenomenon." On one hand, people are enjoying a greater autonomy, on the other, they are 'lonely'. <p>"I collected the tarantula after it was stung, but before the wasp laid an egg, so I've had the opportunity to observe the tarantula's recovery," said the biologist.</p>

Excruciating wasp sting leaves Tarantula paralysed for more than a month; video leaves viewers astonished

Fossils unearthed in China's Hubei Province show that a curious marine reptile that roamed the waters around 250 million years ago had hunting habits similar to the modern gentle giants of the sea — whales.</p>

<h2><strong>Blast from the past</strong></h2>

<p>Scientists estimate that the ancient reptile species existed in the Triassic Period, around 248 million years ago. They suggest that the marine reptile species called Hupehsuchus nanchangensis was lost to us during Earth's worst mass extinction.</p>

<p>While the reptile had a feeding style similar to the modern whale, Hupehsuchus was far more modest, at only about three feet (one metre) long.</p>

<p>Fossils indicate that the reptile had a long, narrow snout, a toothless mouth. It used its front and back limbs as paddles for steering, and its broad tail for forward propulsion.</p>

<p>Hupehsuchus nanchangensis' snout was made up of long, loose bones, with the lower jaw connected to the rest of the skull loosely. This, as per the scientists, allowed it to open its mouth wide to take in large amounts of water that contained small prey like zooplanktons.</p>

<h2><strong>How similar were these reptiles to whales?</strong></h2>

<p>Not very, there's a very obvious, enormous size difference. Furthermore, while the feeding method is similar, scientists speculate that there might be key differences.</p>

<p>"The further the relationship between two animals, the more fascinating this phenomenon becomes," said the study's lead author paleontologist Long Cheng of the Wuhan Center of China Geological Survey.&nbsp;<br />
"Baleen whales are mammals and Hupehsuchus are reptiles. Their affinity is so distant. And they appeared more than 200 million years apart," he added.</p>

<p>To sift through the ocean water for prey, whales use baleen plates, aka whale bone, that are plates made of keratin. However, fossils of the Hupehsuchus nanchangensis were missing baleen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking to Reuters, co-author of the research, palaeontologist Mike Benton of the University of Bristol in England said: "Altogether, this points to a soft pouch made of skin around the mouth and throat, as in modern baleen whales, and some kind of filtering device hanging from the jaws, like baleen - but the 'baleen' and skin are not preserved."&nbsp;The research was published on Monday in the journal BMC Ecology and Evolution.</p>

<p>Talking to Live Science, James Moskito, CEO of the California-based ocean tour operator Ocean Safaris, who captured the video during an expedition to the Gulf of California, said: "The killer whales start coming in and next I know they're biting the bottom of it (the victim shark)".</p>

<p>"It's literally over in a matter of seconds," remarks Moskito, adding, "They came in, they bit the bottom of the whale shark. Looks like they slurped in the liver and then the whale shark just fell and descended down, with no movement — I'm assuming it was dead."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fambua found Facebook pages selling these yoni pearls that as per them can "cleanse" the uterus and protect women from cervical cancer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the media collective's report, "Facebook’s own algorithms are often amplifying this content, and are letting ads for detox remedies target Kenyan users."</p>

<p>It further points out that all these so-called remedies and the supposed health benefits are not backed by any scientific evidence.</p>

<h2><strong>'Asleep at the wheel'</strong></h2>

<p>"What is most alarming is how freely these adverts are available. People are not just able to sell things that are harmful, but to do so publicly and even pay for these adverts to go viral. There's an audacious impunity about it," says research lead Wanjiru Nguhi.</p>

<p>"Scam products are being delivered into the Kenyan marketplace while big tech is asleep at the wheel," remarks Kristina Wilfore, co-founder of ShePersisted, an initiative to address gendered disinformation.</p>

<h2><strong>Vaginal detox</strong></h2>

<p>It's not just ads on social media, these products have also been made popular by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Vera Sidika, the star of the Real Housewives of Nairobi.</p>

<p>As per The Guardian, these vaginal detox products sell for about 1,000 Kenyan shillings (or around $7). Medical experts caution against the use of these 'yoni pearls' and say that these are not only unnecessary but can also cause pain and infections.</p>

<p>Researchers say that these marketing fads are attempting to exploit pressures on women to conform to unattainable standards of sexuality and ill-informed notions of female hygiene.&nbsp;</p>

Fambua found Facebook pages selling these yoni pearls that as per them can "cleanse" the uterus and protect women from cervical cancer. Bogus cures like steaming the vagina — by sitting over a bowl of boiling water is also being promoted as a cure for endometriosis. Big tech profiteering off hoaxes As per the media collective's report, "Facebook’s own algorithms are often amplifying this content, and are letting ads for detox remedies target Kenyan users." It further points out that all these so-called remedies and the supposed health benefits are not backed by any scientific evidence. <p>On Tuesday, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Somalia called for Dahir's suspension following "a preliminary investigation meeting with the Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee of Somalia." The investigation ended with the conclusion that Ali "has been identified as not a sports person nor a runner" and Dahir "has engaged in acts of abuse of power, nepotism, and defaming the name of the nation in the international arena."</p>

<p>"Furthermore, the Ministry of Youth and Sports firmly declares its intention to pursue legal action against both the Chairman of the Athletics Federation of Somalia and individuals responsible for the falsification of the Somali University Sports Association," a statement from the office of the Minister of Youth and Sports Hon,&nbsp;Mohamed Barre Mohamud, pointed out.</p>

<p>Reportedly, Ali has denied all claims of her relative Dahir's involvement in her selection. As per her, she took part in the race after topping in university competitions. In addition, the youngster has vowed to bounce back strongly and improve in the upcoming races.</p>

<p>World Athletics stated, according to Yahoo Sports, "Countries who have no male and/or no female athletes who had achieved the entry standard or considered as having achieved the entry standard or a qualified relay team, can enter one unqualified male athlete or one unqualified female athlete in one event of the championships." Thus, it might have been exploited by Dahir, if she was actually involved in Ali's unfair selection.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per Mirror UK, the centenarian must have lived through not just one, but three pandemics, the two world wars and was born&nbsp;even before the death of British Queen Victoria.</p>

<p>His birth certificate for the year 1917 shows that he was born on 4th August 1895, which means he was born before the first-ever high school proms (1920s) and the discovery of X-rays (November 1985).</p>

<p>"There are several cases with incorrect documentation. But his documentation showed he was younger than he actually was," she added.</p>

'He's just Ken': Malala Yousafzai jumps on the Barbie bandwagon

<p>The seal, as per a report in The Guardian, was used to authenticate "indulgences" or written pardons for a person's sinful behaviour.</p>

<p>As per the report, the seal which was found by a metal detectorist just two miles from Mottisfont, an Augustinian priory and site of pilgrimage near Romsey, Hampshire, dates back to the 15th-16th century.</p>

<p>Estimates suggest that it dates&nbsp;between 1470 and 1520. It reportedly spent some 500 years buried in the field before it was discovered.</p>

<p>George Roberts, curator at the National Trust, said: "All this was done to help secure a place in heaven after their death. However, before they could reach heaven, they believed they would need to spend time in purgatory to be purified."</p>

<h2><strong>A pardon in exchange for money</strong></h2>

<p>Indulgences were written pardons that gained popularity in the medieval times.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The document certifying this purchase was certified with a stamp or impression that was created using the seat matrix pressed into hot coloured wax.</p>

<p>New York City authorities, as per Fox News, have urged the public to steer clear of the area to ensure their safety. The incident has left at least six people injured, including two firefighters who were responding to the scene.</p>

<p>At around 7:25 am (local time), the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) received a report of a fire in the crane's engine compartment, situated about 45 stories high.</p>

<p>"At that point, we had injuries to civilians and firefighters, but they were minor," added Pfeifer.</p>

<p>Con Edison, the energy company, is on standby to cut off gas supply if necessary, as one of its main lines runs directly underneath the affected area on 10th Avenue.</p>

<p>Pfeifer told the press that despite the perilous situation, the crane operator demonstrated quick thinking by attempting to extinguish the fire. However, the intensity of the blaze forced the operator to evacuate the crane for their safety.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"So we give a lot of credit to the crane operator, but the fire overwhelmed that operator and (they) had to exit the crane."</p>

<p>New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed relief that the injuries sustained were minor, considering the scale of the disaster.</p>

<p>"Thank God that the injuries… were minor," said Adams.&nbsp;"As you can see from the debris on the street, this could have been much worse," he added.</p>

<p>Once the fire is fully under control, authorities plan to dismantle the crane to prevent further risks. Investigations into the cause of the fire and collapse will follow as authorities seek to ensure such incidents do not recur.</p>

<h2><strong>A mercy killing</strong></h2>

<p>74-year-old Janice Hunter, as per Sky News, died of asphyxiation at the couple's retirement home near Paphos in December 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the time, David admitted to killing her but denied it was a murder. He told the Cyprus court that Janice was suffering from blood cancer and had "begged him" to take her life, relieve her of the pain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lesley Cawthorne, Janice and David's daughter told Sky News she was relieved that her father has been cleared of murder charges.</p>

<p>"It's the best we could have hoped for in the circumstances, and I really hope the judges can extend their compassion and be lenient in their sentencing."</p>

<p>In June 2022, she told BBC that her mother had been "in absolute agony" in her final months.</p>

<p>As per David, his wife had been begging him to relieve her of the pain&nbsp;for weeks.</p>

<p>"For five or six weeks before she died, she was asking me to help her. She was asking me more every day," he said.</p>

<p>Despite opposition from the defence, the court had allowed his confession, deeming it lawfully obtained.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Not a pre-planned act</strong></h2>

<p>As per BBC, Hunter's lawyer Michael Polak, the verdict meant there was a "very good chance" his client would receive a suspended sentence and be able to return to the UK to live with his daughter.</p>

<p>"This wasn't a pre-planned act," said Polak, adding that his client "acted on the spur of the moment because she (Janice) was in so much pain."</p>

<p>According to the lawyer, judges also accepted Hunter had a "loving" and "dream" relationship with his wife of more than 50 years and "on that morning she asked him to end her life".</p>

<p>Reportedly, many of them have set the age requirement between 18 and 40 years. Additionally, some have raised this restriction and cater to people till the ages of 45 to 50, but many have drawn the line at 35 years.</p>

<p>And it's not just the capital Beijing. Similar restrictions are in place in other major Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Guangzhou.</p>

They claimed that they were trying to avoid conflicts between their young guests and the "old" ones and that the schedules, and living habits of the two broad age groups are different.</p>

<p>Talking to local news publication Baidu, the user behind the viral social media post which helped shine the limelight on this issue, says that staying in a youth hostel is not only cheaper but also helps you make friends with people with similar interests.</p>

<p>Fu Jian, a lawyer at Henan-based Zejin Law Firm, says that age restrictions are not illegal, but that "operators should inform customers of such conditions in advance to prevent unnecessary disputes."</p>

<h2><strong>Why did a turtle need a CT scan?</strong></h2>

<p>As per Miami Herald report, Kale's journey has been challenging. In 2019, the endangered turtle was accidentally hooked by a recreational fisherman off the coast of Virginia. Virginia wildlife officials intervened to rescue the juvenile turtle, but the size of the hook required invasive surgeries to address the injury.</p>

<p>Due to complications during the healing process, Kale developed scar tissue and a fistula, a hollow space prone to infections. Consequently, he requires regular veterinarian visits and treatment.</p>

<p>The Cook Museum of Natural Science in Decatur, Alabama, took in Kale in 2020 and has been providing the necessary care for his ongoing medical issues. Recently, the museum staff decided that a CT scan was needed to assess the progress of Kale's deep shell infections.</p>

<p>As per the museum, "The CT scan is the best tool to assess the improvement of Kale’s deep infections of his shell."</p>

<h2><strong>A grumpy turtle and a CT scan</strong></h2>

<p>To address this need, they approached the radiology team at Decatur Morgan Hospital for assistance. The hospital's radiology team was up for the challenge, and Kale became their first animal patient.</p>

<p>Apparently, during the CT scan, Kale expressed his displeasure at being at the doctor's, due to which veterinarians had to hold him still during the procedure.</p>

This time, over his views on the United States Vice President Kamala Harris. A recent interview of the influencer with Tucker Carlson is going viral on Twitter. In the interview, Tate can be heard claiming that Kamala, an Indian-origin politician, constantly plays the race card in her favour.</p>

<p>During the interview, Tate called the US vice president "largely incompetent" and claimed, "I don't think I've ever heard her put a coherent sentence together."</p>

<p>As per a report in New York Post, the results revealed that millennials, or those born between 1981 and 1996, were the worst offenders, with 13 per cent admitting to being dishonest at least once a day.</p>

<p>The survey did delve into the specific areas where lies are most prevalent. Nearly one-third of millennials admitted to lying on their resumes this year and the workplace was identified as the hub of deceit. Almost 40 per cent of millennials confessed to lying to their boss in order to avoid embarrassment.</p>

<p>Furthermore, 23 per cent of millennials and 21 per cent of Gen Z individuals admitted to lying on social media to impress others.</p>

<h2><strong>What pushes millennials to lie?</strong></h2>

<p>The focus on money, image, and fame among millennials might explain their higher propensity for lying, as indicated by a 2012 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.</p>

<p>As per a CNN report, the 25-year-old man has been identified only by his surname Ma. A police statement released on Monday shows that he is reportedly a&nbsp;graduate of Beijing's prestigious Renmin University&nbsp;—&nbsp;the institution from whose database the data was stolen.</p>

<p>The website has now been shut down. However, over the weekend, multiple screenshots were posted on Weibo, a social media network often called China's alternative to Twitter.</p>

<p>As per user posts, the website was in operation since 2020. It allegedly rated the physical appearance of both graduate and undergraduate students.</p>

<p>Screenshots of the website as per CNN showed profiles of students that along with their names and student IDs listed their dates and place of birth alongside pictures and assigned scores.</p>

<h2><strong>What does Renmin University have to say?</strong></h2>

<p>As per CNN, in a statement, the University which is located in Beijing's Haidian district on Sunday said that it is in contact with the police and is cooperating with the investigation.</p>

'Eye of the beholder?': Chinese man detained for creating website rating attractiveness of university students

<p>Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) who is often called one of the 'godfathers of AI', has called on governments to intervene and prevent machines from taking control of society. Speaking at the Collision tech conference in Toronto, Hinton emphasised the importance of understanding how AI might attempt to take control before it surpasses human intelligence.</p>

<p>Hinton, who recently left Google to speak more openly about the risks of AI, expressed his concern that the risks associated with AI should not be dismissed as science fiction or fear-mongering.</p>

<h2><strong>Take action now "before AI is smarter than us"</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking at the conference that brought together more than 30,000 investors, tech workers and startup founders, Hinton said: "Before AI is smarter than us, I think the people developing it should be encouraged to put a lot of work into understanding how it might try and take control away."</p>

<p>"Right now there are 99 very smart people trying to make AI better and one very smart person trying to figure out how to stop it taking over and maybe you want to be more balanced," he added.</p>

<p>The technology named "Jizai Arms" takes inspiration from 'The Arm', a quasi-horror traditional Japanese story by novelist Yasunari Kawabata. The short story revolves around an ageing man who becomes obsessed with a beautiful young woman and borrows one of her arms for the night.</p>

<p>As per the researcher, the aim behind developing 'Jizai arms' is to foster a relationship similar to music and instrument between machine and man.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Lying somewhere between a human and a tool, like how a musical instrument can become as if a part of your body," is how the University of Tokyo researcher describes it.</p>

<p>He says that rather than replace humans, the technology aims to "support us" and "unlock creativity".</p>

<p>"This is absolutely not a rival to human beings, but rather something that helps us do as we please, like a bicycle or e-bike. It supports us and can unlock creativity," said Inami.</p>

Japanese researchers turn horror story to reality, develop cyborg 'Jizai Arms' that can be strapped on. Watch!

<p>Francesca Gino, a prominent Harvard Business School (HBS) professor known for her studies on honesty, has been accused of data fraud. Allegations against Gino surfaced in recent weeks, with claims that she falsified results in several behavioural science studies.</p>

<h2><strong>How did her lies come to light?</strong></h2>

<p>As per the Guardian, Harvard informed Max Bazerman, an HBS professor and co-author of a 2012 paper with Gino, that it believed one of the studies overseen by Gino had falsified results.</p>

<p>The paper&nbsp;in question was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and later retracted. It focused on an experiment involving participants filling out tax and insurance paperwork.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It claimed that participants who signed truthfulness declarations at the top of the page were more honest than those who signed at the bottom.</p>

<p>"Many written forms required by businesses and governments rely on honest reporting. Proof of honest intent is typically provided through signature at the end of, eg, tax returns or insurance policy forms. Still, people sometimes cheat to advance their financial self-interests at great costs to society. We test an easy-to-implement method to discourage dishonesty: signing at the beginning rather than at the end of a self-report, thereby reversing the order of the current practice," said the study's abstract.</p>

<p>According to a report in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Bazerman, Harvard, provided "compelling evidence" of data falsification, including the findings that someone accessed a database and added and altered data.</p>

<h2><strong>More proof?</strong></h2>

<p>In response to the allegations, a blog called DataColoda, run by three behavioural science academics, published a series of posts detailing extensive evidence of alleged fraud in four academic papers co-authored by Gino.</p>

<p>The blog authors shared their concerns with Harvard Business School in 2021 and believe that many more papers authored by Gino may contain fake data.</p>

<p>"We discovered evidence of fraud in papers spanning over a decade, including papers published quite recently (in 2020)," wrote blog authors, ESADE Business School's Uri Simonsohn, University of California, Berkeley’s Leif Nelson, and University of Pennsylvania’s Joseph Simmons.</p>

As per the Guardian, Harvard informed Max Bazerman, an HBS professor and co-author of a 2012 paper with Gino, that it believed one of the studies overseen by Gino had falsified results. The paper in question was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and later retracted. It focused on an experiment involving participants filling out tax and insurance paperwork. It claimed that participants who signed truthfulness declarations at the top of the page were more honest than those who signed at the bottom. "Many written forms required by businesses and governments rely on honest reporting. Proof of honest intent is typically provided through signature at the end of, eg, tax returns or insurance policy forms. Still, people sometimes cheat to advance their financial self-interests at great costs to society. We test an easy-to-implement method to discourage dishonesty: signing at the beginning rather than at the end of a self-report, thereby reversing the order of the current practice," said the study's abstract. According to a report in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Bazerman, Harvard, provided "compelling evidence" of data falsification, including the findings that someone accessed a database and added and altered data. More proof? In response to the allegations, a blog called DataColoda, run by three behavioural science academics, published a series of posts detailing extensive evidence of alleged fraud in four academic papers co-authored by Gino. The blog authors shared their concerns with Harvard Business School in 2021 and believe that many more papers authored by Gino may contain fake data. "We discovered evidence of fraud in papers spanning over a decade, including papers published quite recently (in 2020)," wrote blog authors, ESADE Business School's Uri Simonsohn, University of California, Berkeley’s Leif Nelson, and University of Pennsylvania’s Joseph Simmons. <p>Now, new research conducted by a team of researchers from Denmark and Sweden suggests that artificial intelligence may be able to predict a person's political views based on their appearance, posing potential privacy concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study found that the AI model accurately predicted the political affiliations of people in around 61 per cent of cases.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the research published in the journal Nature, variations in facial expressions were linked to political views. The model concluded that, due to their smiles, "both male and female right-wing composites appeared happier than their left-wing counterparts",&nbsp;while liberal candidates displayed more neutral expressions.</p>

<p>Women who exhibited a facial expression of contempt — neutral eyes and one corner of the lips lifted — were associated with more liberal politics by the model.</p>

<p>As per Business Insider, women deemed attractive by their beauty scores were predicted to have conservative views, although there was no similar correlation found between men's attractiveness and right-wing leanings.</p>

<p>"Politicians on the right have been found to be more attractive than those on the&nbsp;left," states the study.</p>

<p>The study aimed to demonstrate the privacy threat resulting from the combination of deep learning techniques and easily accessible photographs. For this purpose, the researchers used a dataset of 3,233 images of Danish political candidates and employed facial recognition and predictive analytics to assess facial expressions and attractiveness scores.</p>

<p>On June 19th, a red-eye flight en route from the Philippines to Seoul, South Korea, became the scene of 'turbulence' after a 19-year-old Korean man tried to open the plane's door.</p>

<p>The man boarded the flight from Cebu in the Philippines. One hour into the flight, he began "acting strangely" due to which the flight crew moved him to the front of the plane — closer to the exit door — to keep an eye on him, reported CNN.</p>

<p>As per officials from Jeju Air, the passenger also complained of feeling "pressure" on his chest.</p>

<p>Soon after, he attempted to open the plane's door. Talking to reporters, he later claimed that he "felt I was being attacked".</p>

<p>Due to their timely action, the door to the plane stayed closed, and the plane landed undamaged. Furthermore, none of the 180 passengers aboard the plane were hurt.</p>

<h2><strong>The investigation</strong></h2>

<p>The man was handed over to the police at Seoul’s Incheon Airport at 7:30 am. Following that, with the passenger's consent, a simple drug test was run, which found he was under the influence of drugs.</p>

<p>As per CNN, a warrant has been issued for the 19-year-old. He has been accused of violating the Aviation Security Act.</p>

<p>No, just last month, a 30-year-old man aboard an Asiana Airlines flight had opened an aircraft's door just before it landed in Daegu, South Korea.</p>

<p>Similarly, in March, a man aboard a Delta Air Lines passenger plane was arrested for opening an aircraft door and sliding down the exit chute.</p>
