Trump has claimed that South Africa’s white minority farmers are being systematically murdered and having their land seized.

Following a dramatic meeting with US President Donald Trump, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was praised for “keeping his cool” in the Oval Office on Thursday (May 22). The meeting, which was supposed to be regarding bilateral trade between the two nations, took a turn when Trump accused South Africa of committing a “white genocide”. While Ramaphosa aimed to improve South African ties with the US, which have significantly gotten worse since Trump took office in January this year. Trump has claimed that South Africa’s white minority farmers are being systematically murdered and having their land seized. “He didn’t get Zelenskyed. That’s what we have to hang onto (he) did not get personally insulted by the world’s most horrible duo of playground bullies,” Rebecca Davis of the national Daily Maverick wrote. In February, Trump and Vice President JD Vance lashed out at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him ungrateful for US military aid. Soon, the argument turned heated, and Zelensky left the White House abruptly. Some also questioned Ramaphosa’s cool composure, asking what was achieved by the exchange between the two leaders. “I don’t think it was the right call. I don’t think we need to explain ourselves to USA,” said Sobelo Motha, a member of a trade union, according to Reuters. “We know there’s no white genocide. So for me, it was pointless exercise.” In recent months, Trump has cancelled aid to South Africa, expelled the country’s ambassador, offered refuge to the white minority, and condemned its genocide court case against Israel. Trump proved his allegations by showing videos and articles discussing the treatment of white South Africans. Defending Ramaphosa’s handling of the meeting with Trump, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said it was important that the two leaders engaged. “It’s not in the president’s nature to be combative. (He) looks at issues calmly, matter-of-factly. I think that’s what we expect of our presidents,” he told Reuters.

Business & Economy: The move followed a landmark meeting with Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa during Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia.

In a dramatic shift in Middle Eastern geopolitics, US President Donald Trump has announced the lifting of economic sanctions on Syria following his unexpected meeting with the country’s new interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former militant leader with links to al-Qaeda. The decision marks a major turning point in the US-Syria relationship, which could have far-reaching consequences across the region. What happened in Syria? After over a decade of civil war and the near-total collapse of governance, President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was toppled in December by Islamist militia Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The group, once affiliated with al-Qaeda, staged a surprise advance into Damascus, forcing Assad and his family to flee to Russia. Sharaa now insists he is committed to safeguarding Syria’s religious and ethnic diversity. “There must be a legal framework that protects and ensures the rights of all,” he told CNN. Why did Trump lift Syria sanctions? As per the Bloomberg report, Trump’s decision came after weeks of lobbying from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, two of Sharaa’s key regional backers. Meeting with Sharaa in Riyadh, Trump described him as a “tough guy” with “potential” and framed the move as giving Syria “a chance at greatness.” Speaking at a major US-Saudi investment forum, Trump called the existing sanctions “crippling” and outdated. Trump also criticised previous US administrations, claiming they were more interested in punishing leaders than negotiating change. “We’re not here to look into souls,” he remarked. “We’re here to make deals.” What were the US sanctions on Syria? Trump lifts sanctions on Syria: What happened and what it means for the war-torn nation

<div class="x_elementToProof" data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody">After weeks of escalating tension, the United States and China have agreed to de-escalate their trade war during high-level talks in Geneva. In a major diplomatic breakthrough, both sides have agreed to unwind the steep tariffs imposed on each other&rsquo;s goods since early April.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof" data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody"></div>
<div class="x_elementToProof" data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody">The US will reduce its combined duties on most Chinese imports from 145 per cent to 30 per cent for a period of 90 days. In response, China will slash its duties on American goods from 125 per cent to 10 per cent, also removing other retaliatory measures implemented over the past month.</div>
<h2 class="x_elementToProof"><b>US cuts &lsquo;de minimis&rsquo; tariff on China shipments</b></h2>
<div class="x_elementToProof">In line with this truce, according to Reuters, the White House has announced a significant rollback of a controversial tariff policy. Starting 14 May, Washington will reduce the so-called &lsquo;de minimis&rsquo; tariff on Chinese shipments to 54 per cent from the previously imposed 120 per cent. The flat fee of $100 per shipment will remain in place, according to an executive order issued by the White House on Monday as reported by Reuters.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof"></div>
<div class="x_elementToProof">The de minimis rule allows goods valued at up to $800 to enter the US via postal services with little or no inspection. Previously, such items from China enjoyed duty-free entry, but that changed in February when President Donald Trump scrapped the exemption and slapped a 120 per cent tariff or a planned $200 flat fee&mdash;on these packages. The move was aimed at curbing the surge of Chinese e-commerce shipments from companies like Shein and Temu, and addressing concerns about the misuse of this channel for smuggling drugs such as fentanyl, according to Reuters.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof"></div>
<div class="x_elementToProof">Introduced in 1938 to reduce administration burden, under former US President Barack Obama, the threshold was raised from $200 to $800. This led to a massive e-commerce boom in the states. According to US Customs and Border Protection's website, shipments entering states have grown by 600 percent in the past 10 years. From 139 million shipments in 2015 it went to over one billion in fiscal year 2023 and in fiscal year 2024, it crossed 1.36 billion mark.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof" aria-hidden="true">&nbsp;</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof">Now, as per Reuters, with trade tensions easing, the White House has decided to amend the 120 per cent rate to 54 per cent and shelve the $200 flat fee, keeping it at $100 instead. The new rates will take effect from 12:01 a.m. (0401 GMT) on 14 May.</div>
<h2 class="x_elementToProof"><b>China lifts ban on Boeing aircraft deliveries</b></h2>
<div class="x_elementToProof">In a reciprocal gesture, China has lifted its month-long ban on deliveries of Boeing aircraft, according to a Bloomberg report. The decision, communicated to Chinese airlines and government agencies earlier this week, comes in the wake of the tariff truce and is expected to provide an immediate boost to the American aviation giant.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof"></div>
<div class="x_elementToProof">According to Bloomberg, the ban had severely impacted Boeing, as it found itself caught in the crossfire of the trade war. After President Trump&rsquo;s sweeping tariffs on key trading partners, Beijing retaliated by ordering domestic airlines to halt Boeing deliveries, pricing the US-made jets out of the Chinese market.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof"></div>
<div class="x_elementToProof">While China is one of Boeing&rsquo;s most important markets, expected to account for 20 per cent of global aircraft demand over the next two decades, according to Boeing&rsquo;s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook&mdash;the company has struggled in recent years due to both trade tensions and internal quality issues. In 2019, China became the first country to ground the 737 Max after two fatal crashes. In early 2024, the company faced renewed scrutiny after a door plug incident mid-flight triggered another quality crisis.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof"></div>
<div class="x_elementToProof">The easing of restrictions allows around 50 Boeing aircraft scheduled for delivery to China this year to proceed, according to Bloomberg. The report also noted that Boeing had already begun redirecting some of these aircraft to markets like India, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.</div>
<h2 class="x_elementToProof"><b>A temporary reprieve or a turning point?</b></h2>
<div class="x_elementToProof">While these policy shifts mark a notable thaw in US-China relations, the concessions come with a time limit. The reduced tariff rates and other eased measures are set to last only 90 days unless further progress is achieved. The Geneva talks have opened a window for negotiation, but experts caution that the deal is a temporary reprieve, not a permanent resolution.</div>
<div class="x_elementToProof"></div>
<div class="x_elementToProof">With geopolitical rivalry, domestic pressures, and industrial competition continuing to loom large, the next round of negotiations will be crucial in determining whether the world&rsquo;s two largest economies can stabilise their fraught trade relationship&mdash;or fall back into economic confrontation.</div>

Business & Economy: The US-China trade deal marks a crucial step towards normalizing trade relations between the two economic giants, potentially paving the way for future cooperation.

The move was aimed at curbing the surge of Chinese e-commerce shipments from companies like Shein and Temu, and addressing concerns about the misuse of this channel for smuggling drugs such as fentanyl, according to Reuters. Introduced in 1938 to reduce administration burden, under former US President Barack Obama, the threshold was raised from $200 to $800. This led to a massive e-commerce boom in the states. According to US Customs and Border Protection's website, shipments entering states have grown by 600 percent in the past 10 years. From 139 million shipments in 2015 it went to over one billion in fiscal year 2023 and in fiscal year 2024, it crossed 1.36 billion mark. Now, as per Reuters, with trade tensions easing, the White House has decided to amend the 120 per cent rate to 54 per cent and shelve the $200 flat fee, keeping it at $100 instead. The new rates will take effect from 12:01 a.m. (0401 GMT) on 14 May. China lifts ban on Boeing aircraft deliveries In a reciprocal gesture, China has lifted its month-long ban on deliveries of Boeing aircraft, according to a Bloomberg report. The decision, communicated to Chinese airlines and government agencies earlier this week, comes in the wake of the tariff truce and is expected to provide an immediate boost to the American aviation giant. According to Bloomberg, the ban had severely impacted Boeing, as it found itself caught in the crossfire of the trade war. After President Trump’s sweeping tariffs on key trading partners, Beijing retaliated by ordering domestic airlines to halt Boeing deliveries, pricing the US-made jets out of the Chinese market. While China is one of Boeing’s most important markets, expected to account for 20 per cent of global aircraft demand over the next two decades, according to Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook—the company has struggled in recent years due to both trade tensions and internal quality issues. In 2019, China became the first country to ground the 737 Max after two fatal crashes. In early 2024, the company faced renewed scrutiny after a door plug incident mid-flight triggered another quality crisis. The easing of restrictions allows around 50 Boeing aircraft scheduled for delivery to China this year to proceed, according to Bloomberg. The report also noted that Boeing had already begun redirecting some of these aircraft to markets like India, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia. A temporary reprieve or a turning point? While these policy shifts mark a notable thaw in US-China relations, the concessions come with a time limit. The reduced tariff rates and other eased measures are set to last only 90 days unless further progress is achieved. The Geneva talks have opened a window for negotiation, but experts caution that the deal is a temporary reprieve, not a permanent resolution. With geopolitical rivalry, domestic pressures, and industrial competition continuing to loom large, the next round of negotiations will be crucial in determining whether the world’s two largest economies can stabilise their fraught trade relationship—or fall back into economic confrontation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping promoted this idea of "Asian family", and emphasised solidarity in a speech at a state dinner in Malaysia on Wednesday. WORLD

China has called for unity from the "Asian family", urging for regional unity during his tour of Southeast Asia, as Trump slapped massive tariffs on Beijing amid the trade war. Chinese President Xi Jinping promoted this idea of "Asian family", and emphasised solidarity in a speech at a state dinner in Malaysia on Wednesday. This clearly reflects China's enthusiasm to tackle US tariff pressure as Trump singles out China while granting mercy to other nations, who were ready to negotiate. China and Malaysia in a joint statement, agreed to enhance collaboration on industry, supply chains, data and talent. They further committed to implementing their Five-Year Programme for Economic and Trade Cooperation and building a “high-level strategic Malaysia-China community.” WATCH | What will get China to the table on trade talks with US? Moreover, in an article published in Cambodian media, Jinping, said, "Together we must stand against hegemonism, power politics," adding that the two neighbours should “resolutely oppose any attempts by external forces to interfere in our internal affairs, sow discord.” This comes as Trump imposed a whopping 245% tariffs on China on Tuesday, which earlier started with 34%. When Beijing did not back out on retaliatory tariffs, the White House announced that China is now facing 245% tariffs. China instructed its airlines not to take any further deliveries of Boeing jets, in response to US President Donald Trump's 145% tariffs. China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded to an inquiry about the 245% tariff report, saying "You can ask the US side for the specific tax rate figures". World: The Black Sea grain initiative was established in July 2022. Its purpose was to ensure that Ukraine could continue exporting its grain.

Russia and the United States are holding discussions in Riyadh for a possible ceasefire in Ukraine. Aside from truce talks, both parties are set to discuss restarting a key agreement aimed at protecting merchant shipping in the Black Sea, the Kremlin announced on Monday (March 24). Moscow said that it believes important parts of the original deal were never fulfilled. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the "Black Sea Initiative," widely known as the grain deal, was among the topics being discussed at a meeting in Saudi Arabia between Russian and American officials on Monday. Russia wants to restore 'Black Sea Grain deal' with Ukraine: What is it and why did Moscow back out the first time?

<p data-pm-slice="0 0 []">'The American Dream': Many hope to live and experience the country, but US citizen Kristen Fischer, who currently lives in India, talks of things that make India special, and she hopes she had these luxuries back home. In a social media post, she emphasises, "These are ten things India does that I wish we had in America."</p>
<p>Very impressed with the digitisation in the country, she wrote, "Digital IDs and digital payments through UPI makes so much sense and simplifies everything. I can go out with only my phone and that is enough. I think Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is something the whole world should adopt."</p>
<p>Autos and rickshaws are something even locals love for its convenience; who would miss a breezy ride to enjoy the pleasant weather? Fischer thinks, "They are cheap, fast, and a very convenient way to get around. I use rickshaws every day and don't have to worry about driving or parking."</p>
<p>She also praises the medical assistance available in the country. "Doctors are very easy to find in India. Most of the time, no appointments are necessary."</p>
<p>She adds, "In America, you have to make an appointment weeks or even months ahead of time to see a doctor. Coming to India was the first time I ever had a doctor prescribe a probiotic to take alongside an antibiotic. It makes sense to me to take those two together to save the gut."</p>

<p>'Musical trash truck' that's a fancy name she coined for the waste collection vehicles that operate across the country. Sharing her experience, she adds, "Delhi has free government waste removal and it is great. I love hearing the musical trash truck come around, and everyone throws their garbage in. We had to pay a lot for trash service in America."</p>
<p>We've heard of friends who go to settle abroad and then end up acquiring skills to be more hands-on. 'Handy man' is the reality they have to accept in their daily life abroad. "It is so convenient to hire skilled labour in India and have help. In America, if you need something done, you have to figure out how to do it yourself because it is just so expensive to hire people," she confirms.</p>

'The American Dream': Many hope to live and experience the country, but US citizen Kristen Fischer, who currently lives in India, talks of things that make India special, and she hopes she had these luxuries back home. In a social media post, she emphasises, "These are ten things India does that I wish we had in America." Very impressed with the digitisation in the country, she wrote, "Digital IDs and digital payments through UPI makes so much sense and simplifies everything. I can go out with only my phone and that is enough. I think Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is something the whole world should adopt." Autos and rickshaws are something even locals love for its convenience; who would miss a breezy ride to enjoy the pleasant weather? Fischer thinks, "They are cheap, fast, and a very convenient way to get around. I use rickshaws every day and don't have to worry about driving or parking." She also praises the medical assistance available in the country. "Doctors are very easy to find in India. Most of the time, no appointments are necessary." She adds, "In America, you have to make an appointment weeks or even months ahead of time to see a doctor. Coming to India was the first time I ever had a doctor prescribe a probiotic to take alongside an antibiotic. It makes sense to me to take those two together to save the gut." Sharing her experience, she adds, "Delhi has free government waste removal and it is great. I love hearing the musical trash truck come around, and everyone throws their garbage in. We had to pay a lot for trash service in America." We've heard of friends who go to settle abroad and then end up acquiring skills to be more hands-on. 'Handy man' is the reality they have to accept in their daily life abroad. "It is so convenient to hire skilled labour in India and have help. In America, if you need something done, you have to figure out how to do it yourself because it is just so expensive to hire people," she confirms. <p>An American Airlines plane carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided with an army helicopter on Thursday (Jan 30) while landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in the US.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As the recovery operation continued, the fire chief said that they are not expecting any survivors.&nbsp;</p>
<p>John Donnelly, the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Chief, in Washington, DC said that they are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Meanwhile, 27 bodies have been recovered from the plane, and one from the helicopter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The plane crashed in the Potomac River after the collision. Search and rescue teams immediately started working on rescuing people, however, nobody was rescued.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The crash is the first fatal commercial plane crash in the US since 2009, when a Bombardier HDC-8 propeller plane went down near Buffalo, New York. The incident led to loss of 49 lives, including 45 passengers and four crew members.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>What happened and when?&nbsp;</h2>
<p>A PSA Airlines jet operating as American Airlines 5342 collided with a US Army helicopter at around 9:00 pm local time on Wednesday, as it approached Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The plane, a Bombardier CRJ700 departed from Wichita, Kansas, carrying 64 people onboard.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The helicopter involved in the crash was a Sikorsky Black Hawk army helicopter that took off from Fort Belvoir in Virginia, the Pentagon said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before the scheduled landing, air traffic controllers (ATC) asked the pilots if they could land on Runway 33. The flight-tracking sites showed that the pilots adjusted their flight path to align with the request.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Also, just less than 30 seconds before the crash, an ATC asked the army helicopter if it could see the arriving plane.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;PAT25 [army helicopter], do you have a CRJ [American Airlines plane] in sight? PAT25, pass behind the CRJ,&rdquo; an air traffic controller said at 8:47 pm (ET on Wednesday, 01:47 GMT on Thursday).</p>

<p>In a significant policy shift, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced the immediate cessation of its long-standing practice of unannounced taxpayer visits by agency revenue officers. The decision cited by Reuters, aimed at reducing public confusion and enhancing overall safety measures for both taxpayers and IRS employees, marks a major step in the ongoing efforts to reform IRS operations.</p>

<p>The policy change comes on the heels of the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and the establishment of a new IRS strategic operating plan in April, signaling a broader overhaul of the agency's practices. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, who made the announcement, emphasised that the alteration would foster increased confidence in the tax administration process, describing it as a 'common-sense step.'</p>

<p><strong>IRS rings the doorbell of change</strong></p>

<p>Under the previous procedure, revenue officers would visit homes and businesses without prior notice to recover significant tax debts, often amounting to a median unpaid balance of $110,000. However, such unannounced visits have been the subject of mounting security concerns and anxiety among taxpayers, especially in the face of false and inflammatory rhetoric surrounding the IRS and its workforce.</p>

<p>Commissioner Werfel pointed out that advancements in technology and the availability of alternative means of communication have rendered unannounced visits unnecessary and even risky for both parties involved. Instead, revenue officers will now initiate contact through mailed appointment letters, known as 725-B, to schedule in-person meetings with taxpayers in most cases.</p>

<p>The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), representing IRS workers and employees in various federal agencies, has supported the policy change. CNBC cited NTEU's national president, Tony Reardon, who highlighted the mounting danger faced by IRS officers in recent years, partly due to hostile rhetoric and unfounded claims directed at the agency's employees. The NTEU believes that the transition to scheduled meetings will protect IRS officers and allow them to carry out their mission of helping taxpayers fulfill their lawful tax obligations effectively.</p>

<p><strong>Unannounced visits restricted to special cases</strong></p>

<p>The new policy, however, does not entirely eliminate unannounced visits. The IRS clarified that extremely limited circumstances, such as the service of summonses and subpoenas or sensitive enforcement activities involving asset seizures, may still warrant such visits. However, these occurrences are expected to be minimal, numbering only a few hundred annually. In contrast, under the previous policy, tens of thousands of unannounced visits occurred annually.</p>

<p>By ending the routine practice of unannounced visits, the IRS aims to streamline its operations and allocate resources more efficiently. The additional funding provided by the Inflation Reduction Act will enable the agency to bolster staffing for compliance work, ensuring that revenue collection can be effectively carried out without resorting to stressful and potentially unsafe visits.</p>
