Former US president Donald Trump campaigned Saturday in Alaska for Sarah Palin, the northern state's former governor whose ascendency many view as the populist precursor to Trump's anti-elite movement.

The two firebrand politicians have both been key figures in the Republican party's shift over the past decade to target the aggrieved working class.

They both have also touted unfounded claims that there was widespread election fraud in the 2020 election, at least in those key states that Trump lost.

"In Alaska, we didn't have to worry about it, because we won," Trump told the stadium crowd.

Palin was catapulted into the limelight when she was chosen by the late Arizona senator John McCain as his running mate in the 2008 presidential election.

A Christian conservative who leaned hard into her outsider status, Palin's rise during the 2008 campaign is widely seen as paving the way for businessman Donald Trump to successfully take the White House eight years later.

Their norm-busting brands stood in direct opposition to previous Republican standard-bearers Mitt Romney and McCain, who this week received a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President Joe Biden, a Democrat.

Palin, an early supporter of Trump's 2016 campaign, told the audience she was partly drawn to the New Yorker because he had supported her when she and her family were the subject of intense media attention.

The United States will be sending around $400 million worth of new weapons to Ukraine as support in the ongoing crisis against Russia. President Joe Biden signed a new package on Friday which will include four additional high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) and higher number of advanced ammunitions. As the battle rages on in a number of parts across Ukraine, the new package will be a massive help for Ukraine.

This announcement comes days after more funding was promised by both the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom. According to Reuters, a senior US defense official said that US has sent 12 HIMARS to Ukraine since the start of the conflict.

"Ukraine has now been successfully striking Russian locations in Ukraine, deeper behind the front lines and disrupting Russia's ability to conduct that artillery operation," the official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity.

Earlier, Russia claimed that they destroyed two HIMARS systems and some additional ammunition during an attack in eastern Ukraine. However, the official denied any such report and said that all the HIMARS provided by the US to Ukraine are currently accounted for by the authorities.

The new package order includes more precise ammunition for howitzer artillery systems – a system unique to the US military, according to Reuters. With the passage of time, Ukraine have received more advanced weaponry from the US and according to official data, the United States has now committed approximately $7.3 billion to the war efforts since the invasion started back in February.

A billboard saying "Alaska is Ours" has been spotted in Russia's Krasnoyarsk, a day after a key ally of President Putin said that the country could reclaim Alaska sold to the United States in 1867.

When the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade, everyone knew that some things would be harder to get, the most obvious one: Abortions. But who knew that this ruling would make the availability of some vital medicines very difficult. In the weeks since the SCOTUS ruling, multiple accounts of such struggles have come to light, reports AFP. One medicine that perhaps no one thought would be affected was arthritis medicine. However, recent reports have brought to light an overlooked impact of the ruling and the resulting state-level abortion bans or harsh restrictions.

A report by AFP narrates the experience of a nurse from Alabama, Melissa, who was told that the regular drug prescription for her rheumatoid arthritis was "on hold" pending a check that she wasn't going to use it to induce an abortion.

The medicine at the centre of the controversy is methotrexate, which reduces inflammation and is frequently used to treat autoimmune diseases like inflammatory arthritis, psoriasis, and lupus. Higher doses are also administered as a cancer treatment to inhibit cell division.

It can also occasionally be used in medical abortions, albeit less commonly than the FDA-approved combination of mifepristone and misoprostol.

Nevertheless, a number of states have introduced legislation that threatens legal action against medical professionals and pharmacies that sell methotrexate.

An unlikely 'side-effect' of abortion ban, women can't buy arthritis medicine

The aftermath of the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade has been quite contradicting when it comes to the various states. While a huge number of states wasted no time in passing “trigger laws” making abortion even more difficult, there have been some states who are trying to find ways in order to preserve the reproductive rights. The Democratic governor of Colorado has joined the fight and he mandated that the state will not be conducting investigations into abortions. Jared Polis signed an executive order that clearly stated that the state will not be taking part in filing criminal or civil investigations against people involved in the abortion process.

“We are taking needed action to protect and defend individual freedom and protect the privacy of Coloradans,” said Polis in a statement obtained by the Colorado Sun.

“This important step will ensure that Colorado’s thriving economy and workforce are not impacted based on personal health decisions that are wrongly being criminalized in other states,” he added.

The governor of North Carolina – Roy Copper – also signed an executive order that aimed at protecting abortion rights. According to the order, people who receive an abortion or medical providers who perform them will not be penalised in any way, according to ABC News.

Judges in Mississippi and Florida were able to put a temporary ban of the trigger bans, but successful appeals mean that it will become for difficult for people to get the procedure done in those states. In Ohio, a six-week abortion ban was announced by the authorities, reported the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of the murder of George Floyd, was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for denying civil rights to his victim. Senior US District Court Judge Paul Magnuson originally sentenced Chauvin to 252 months in prison but later reduced it by seven months due to time served. This sentence was added on top of the 22-and-a-half-year sentence that Chauvin is already serving for murder. The former police officer pleaded guilty of murder last year after the death of Floyd sparked protests all around the United States.

"This sentence should send a strong message that the Justice Department stands ready to prosecute law enforcement officers who use deadly force without basis," Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said according to CNN.

"While no amount of prison time can reverse the tragic consequences of Derek Chauvin's violent actions, we hope that this sentence provides some small measure of justice for the families and communities impacted," he added.

These two prison sentences will be running simultaneously but Chauvin will be allowed to serve his term in a federal prison rather than in a Minnesota state penitentiary, where he has been held in solitary confinement, according to CNN.

The parents of the two girls who died in the United States while participating in TikTok's "Blackout Challenge", which makes a sport of choking oneself until passing out have sued the company.

Accusing TikTok software of "intentionally and repeatedly" pushing the Blackout Challenge, the lawsuit has been filed in state court in Los Angeles.

Matthew Bergman, an attorney at the Social Media Victims Law Center, which filed the suit, told news agency AFP that "TikTok needs to be held accountable for pushing deadly content to these two young girls."

"TikTok has invested billions of dollars to intentionally design products that push dangerous content that it knows are dangerous and can result in the deaths of its users."

The girls who died after attempting the challenge were eight and nine years old and used a rope and a dog leash.

Their parents have accused TikTok of using its algorithm to promote the Blackout Challenge to each of the girls and listed similar deaths in Italy and Australia as examples.

Calling for a judge to order TikTok to stop hooking children via its algorithm and promoting dangerous challenges, they have also cited examples of harmful challenges including "Skull Breaker Challenge", "Coronavirus Challenge" as well as the "Fire Challenge".

Several users and tech experts have also raised concerns that TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance, has featured and promoted an array of challenges in which users film themselves taking part in themed acts that are sometimes dangerous.

United States celebrated Fourth of July with fireworks and fervor amid major differences in opinions among the people with regards to various policies and Supreme Court rulings but amid the celebrations in the United States there were scenes of deadly violence.

United States: Mass Shootings in Illinois and Philadelphia, July 4 painted red with deadly scenes

At least six people were killed in a shooting that rocked a Fourth of July parade in a Chicago suburb on Monday, further dividing a nation already torn apart by high court decisions on abortion and guns as well as hearings on the Jan. 6 uprising.

The most recent mass shooting occurred as the country looked for an occasion to commemorate its founding and the ties that continue to bind it. It was planned that people would skip work, attend parades, chow down on hamburgers and hot dogs at home barbecues, and congregate beneath the stars to watch fireworks.

But a Highland Park march abruptly came to an end after bullets were fired, killing at least six people. Hundreds of parade attendees fled the scene, some of them were clearly injured, leaving behind blankets, chairs, and baby strollers. A person of interest was taken into custody by the authorities Monday night.

Fireworks started to explode as the Highland Park neighbourhood wept and around the nation. Soon after sunset, pyrotechnic displays erupted in Boston and New York City, where a kaleidoscope of colour illuminated skyscrapers and exploded over the Hudson River.

Two Police Officers shot in Philadelphia

Also, two police officers were shot in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when tens of thousands of people were enjoying a concert and fireworks display to mark Fourth of July.

It happened near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway is where the incident happened. According to CBS3 Philadelphia's story, which cited the police department, both officers were in stable condition. The shooter is being sought for by the police.

President Joe Biden, in remarks Monday celebrating 246 years of America’s independence, sought to reassure a nation both exhausted and unsettled by recent events.

“In recent days, there’s been reason to think this country is moving backwards, that freedom is being reduced, that rights we assumed were protected are no longer,” Biden said in remarks to military families and administration officials enjoying a picnic on the South Lawn of the White House. “I know it can be exhausting and unsettling, but tonight I want you to know we’re going to get through all of this.”

Many people perceive America as being divided, but according to Biden, "I believe we are more united than we are divided."

He described the killing in a tweet from earlier in the day as "senseless gun violence that has yet again brought sadness to an American town this Independence Day."

“I will not give up fighting the epidemic of gun violence,” the president tweeted.

We live in uncertain times. The Highland Park shooting will have an impact on a nation already traumatised by recent mass killings at a Texas elementary school and a New York supermarket, as well as the economic crisis that looms.

Recent Supreme Court rulings that struck down a New York law restricting who is allowed to carry a pistol in public and that overturned the constitutional right to an abortion have also shown stark social and political disparities.

However, despite lowering coronavirus precautions, many had cause to congregate and celebrate for the first time in three years.

Due of the pandemic, Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest moved away from its usual venue in Brooklyn's Coney Island district for two years.

In addition to commemorating togetherness and putting aside political differences, many people used July 4 to think back on the revolution that gave rise to history's longest-lasting democracy.

World third-richest person Jeff Bezos slammed United States President Joe Biden for calling on companies running gasoline stations to lower their prices. Bezos' latest remarks have, in a way, renewed his spat with the White House. Taking to his official Twitter handle, the Amazon founder wrote: "Ouch. Inflation is far too important a problem for the White House to keep making statements like this." "It’s either straight ahead misdirection or a deep misunderstanding of basic market dynamics," he added. Ouch. Inflation is far too important a problem for the White House to keep making statements like this. It’s either straight ahead misdirection or a deep misunderstanding of basic market dynamics. https://t.co/XgKfEICZpk — Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) July 3, 2022 × What did Biden say? On Saturday, Biden tweeted: "My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril." Biden added, "Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you're paying for the product. And do it now." In response to Bezos' comments, the White House came to the US leader's defence on Sunday. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Twitter that oil prices have dropped about $15 a barrel over the past month. "But prices at the pump have barely come down. That's not 'basic market dynamics.' It's a market that is failing the American consumer," she wrote. White House spokesman on national security issues, John Kirby, also defended the president. In an appearance on Fox News, he said, "The president is working very, very hard across many fronts... to try to bring that price down. Citing Biden's proposal to suspend the federal gas tax this summer and his decision to tap the US strategic oil reserves to put more product on the market, Kirby said, "He knows that it is not going to solve all the problems, but it will help if everybody cooperates on this. We could bring the price down at least by about one dollar a gallon. Gasoline prices in US Gasoline prices have been above $5 a gallon since early June. Notably, the prices have fallen slightly since, but remain far from the $3 a gallon level of a year ago. Biden has regularly attacked oil companies for the high prices as he says that these companies care only about profits. On the other hand, the companies say in turn they have increased production in order to reduce prices. But they also say that the prices are set on the world market. On Friday (July 1), the Texas Supreme Court gave a green light to a hotly debated 1925 state law banning abortions, overruling a lower court decision. The decision comes after the United States Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade. The decades-old 1925 abortion ban in Texas automatically took effect when, in June, the US top court overturned Roe, which had provided a federal constitutional right to abortion. The law, which was written before Roe, had banned abortions. It punished those who performed them with possible imprisonment. The decision was celebrated by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Twitter on Saturday morning. Paxton called it a "pro-life victory" for "Texas' unborn babies". ALSO READ | United States: New York moves to enshrine abortion rights in state constitution On the other hand, those who are pro-abortion slammed the decision. Julia Kaye, an attorney with the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, told The New York Times: "Extremist politicians are on a crusade to force Texans into pregnancy and childbirth against their will, no matter how devastating the consequences." Meanwhile, abortion has become unavailable or severely restricted in a dozen US states since last week's ruling, abortion rights activists said Friday. "Anti-abortion politicians and states across the country have taken the baton from the Supreme Court and have begun to enact abortion bans," said Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). IN PICS | Protesters storm and set fire to Libyan parliament in Tobruk "As of this morning, abortion is unavailable or largely unavailable in approximately 12 states as a result of the Supreme Court's decision," Romero told reporters. "That number is expected to grow in coming days, weeks and months until we reach approximately 26 states across the country," he said. "More than half the country will ban abortion." Lead Mead in the United States is shrinking, and it has resulted in a sunken boat dating back to the second world war resurfacing near the reservoir that lies between Nevada and Arizona. The lake has been severely impacted by drought as the water level has gone down drastically and according to local officials, the boat was deep below the surface of the water. The boat, identified as a landing craft, was sunk after being used for surveys, according to dive tours company Las Vegas Scuba.

This is the second time that an object has resurfaced due to the water levels going down after two sets of human remains were found earlier. Lake Mead is the largest human-made reservoir in the US but the decline has been steady, and experts said that climate change will make things worse.

The boat found in Lake Mead was identified as the ones made by Higgins Industries in New Orleans during the second world war, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. These boats were used quite regularly by the army and a number of them were even used in Normandy in 1944.

The situation is concerning for the authorities and Camille Touton, the US Bureau of Reclamation commissioner, said that the department will be looking into it. The fall in water levels has also impacted the electricity production on the Arizona-Utah line. The states around the area has been deeply impacted by the dip in hydropower and that has resulted in more power cuts in the recent past.

United States President Joe Biden is sending more weapons to Ukraine to counter Russia's aggression. In a press conference on Thursday (June 30), Biden said that the US will provide another $800 million in weapons and military aid to Ukraine. The US President also praised the courage of Ukrainians since Russia invaded on February 24 this year. Biden said the United States and its NATO allies were united in standing up to Russian President Vladimir Putin. His comments came after a NATO summit in the Spanish capital Madrid. Biden told a news conference: "I don't know how it's going to end, but it will not end with Russia defeating Ukraine. Ukraine has already dealt a severe blow to Russia." In the aftermath of Russia's invasion, the United States has already announced more than $6.1 billion in aid to Ukraine. The formal announcement of more weapons would come on top of that. Biden announced an $800 million disbursement of US funding for Ukraine's military in "the next few days". As per reports, this will include "advanced Western air defence systems for Ukraine, more artillery and ammunition, counter-battery radar, additional ammunition for the HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems that we've already given Ukraine and more HIMARS coming from other countries as well." As per Biden, international contributions now amounted to "nearly 140,000 anti-tank systems, more than 600 tanks, nearly 500 artillery systems, more than 600,000 rounds of artillery ammunition, as well as advanced multiple launch rocket systems, anti-ship systems and air defence systems". Wall Street stocks fell on Thursday, finishing solidly lower after US data showed persistently high inflation pinching consumer spending. The broad-based S&P 500 finished at 3,785.38, down 0.9 per cent for the day and a loss of more than 16 per cent for the last six months, the worst first half of a year since 1970.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 0.8 per cent to 30,775.43, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index tumbled 1.3 per cent to 11,028.74. The market has fallen most of the year, breaking the trend only in late March and for other brief stretches in a reasonably steady retreat.

A series of bad inflation readings have prompted the Federal Reserve to undertake increasingly aggressive measures to try to rein in growth and pricing pressures. Two weeks ago, the central bank enacted a supersized three-quarter of a point interest rate hike, the biggest increase in nearly 30 years. Markets are weighing whether to expect the same thing in July.

Commerce Department data showed spending rose just 0.2 per cent in May, less than half the increase in April and part of a steady downward drift as consumers pull back amid surging prices. The report also showed that the price index rose 6.3 per cent compared to May 2021, the same annual pace as in the prior month -- a positive sign in the Federal Reserve's battle against inflation.

But when inflation is taken into account, the data show a decline in real consumer spending.

As reported by AFP, Tom Cahill of Ventura Wealth Management said, "Inflation came in a little bit better than expected today but probably not good enough to prevent the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates 75 basis points at the next meeting."

"At the same time we had the personal spending coming in negative for the month in real terms," Cahill said. "People are starting to get the sense that perhaps the Federal Reserve is going to push the economy into recession," he added.

The transfer of $1.3 billion in economic aid to Ukraine as part of the initial $7.5 billion promised to Kyiv by the Biden administration in May has been done, the US Treasury Department announced on Wednesday, as reported by AFP.

"With this delivery of economic assistance, we reaffirm our resolute commitment to the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Putin's war of aggression and work to sustain their economy," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

The payment, part of the $7.5 billion aid package signed by President Joe Biden in May, is set to be made through the World Bank.

According to World Bank estimates, the war, which began with Russia's invasion of its former Soviet neighbour in February, could cause the Ukrainian economy to contract by up to 45 per cent in 2022.

The country is currently running a budget deficit that is growing by $5 billion every month, exacerbated by its inability to raise funds or access financing on external markets.

Allies have rushed to pump Ukraine with aid, with the G7 and the European Union also announcing commitments of $29.6 billion in further money for Kyiv, with $8.5 billion of that coming from the United States, according to the Treasury Department.

Washington already disbursed two payments of $500 million of that through the World Bank in April and May to help cover Ukraine's immediate costs as it dealt with "Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion," the Treasury said.

Washington has already supplied Kyiv with more than $6 billion in military equipment since Russia's invasion.
