US Embassy dismisses reports claiming military deal with Nepal

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than 100 days and since the start of the invasion, a number of major countries have imposed strict sanctions on Russia and major Russian personalities. United States have been leading the line when it comes to major sanctions on Russia along with a number of western countries. However, according to a report on Bloomberg, the US has increased efforts to help their companies complete purchases of fertilizers from Russian companies. The global food crisis created by the Russian invasion of Ukraine is one of the main reasons behind US looking to buy fertilizers for cheap from Russia, the report added.

According to Bloomberg, sources confirmed that the government has silently been pushing the companies to increase their purchase order with time. With sanctions being imposed by the European Union and other major countries, the US are looking to take advantage of the situation.

According to the official data accessed by Bloomberg, fertilizer exports have gone down by almost 24 per cent in Russia and the producers are willing to sell their stock for a much lower price. However, the fertilizers are exempted in the list of sanctions imposed by both US and the EU resulting in a loophole that can be used to continue the trade without causing any major issue.

US wants local companies to buy more fertilizer from Russia: Report

Amid all the suffering due to inflation and supply chain issues, tampon supply has been hit hard adding to the woes of the women in the menstruating age group in the United States. The war in Ukraine has further crimped supply because Russia and Ukraine are both major exporters of fertilizer, which is used to grow cotton

Women are complaining on social media about missing tampons on the shelves of the supermarkets. The issue garnered national interest this week after an article in TIME magazine called the dearth of tampons and pads the shortage “no one is talking about.”

Procter & Gamble told Bloomberg that the company was "working hard to ramp up production to meet the increased demand for our products." The company owns a number of the biggest sanitary product brands in the US, including Tampax and Always.

A spokesperson for Edgewell Personal Care, which makes Playtex and o.b. tampons, said that its stocks have been "impacted due to extensive workforce shortages caused by two separate Omicron surges in the US and Canada in late 2021 and early 2022, respectively".

Tampon prices are up significantly — nearly 10% from a year ago, according to Bloomberg. But an Amazon spokesperson denied rumours of price gouging, saying its policies "help ensure sellers are pricing their products competitively," and that the company actively monitors pricing and removes offers that violate its fair pricing policy.

On Monday, the US Senator for New Hampshire, Maggie Hassan, wrote to the CEO of Procter & Gamble, urging the manufacturer to tackle the shortages, which she labelled "very troubling."

Hassan cited a story in Time Magazine, in which a reporter was unable to find tampons across several states, and criticized the "price gouging" of items.

In the United States, a bipartisan group of senators on Sunday (June 12) announced measures targeted to control the recent increase in gun violence in the country. They have chalked out a framework for new legislation. The group of 20 lawmakers said in a statement: "Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country."

"Our plan increases needed mental health resources, improves school safety and support for students, and helps ensure dangerous criminals and those who are adjudicated as mentally ill can't purchase weapons," the statement added.

The proposals include tougher background checks for gun buyers under 21 and increasing resources for states to keep weapons out of the hands of people who are dangerous to others or themselves. However, it is understood that proposal falls far short of the changes called for by the president.

In the framework, the senators also called for increased investment in mental health services and school safety resources. They suggested including domestic violence convictions and restraining orders in the national background check database.

In the country, an increase in gun violence and mass killings has sparked renewed calls for reform of the nation's gun laws. Although gun attacks have become a common thing, but a recent mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas shocked the nation. The shooting at the school killed 21 people, including small children.

US President Joe Biden last week called for new gun-control legislation. He further called for restrictions on semi-automatic rifles. "If we can't ban assault weapons as we should, we must at least raise the age to buy assault weapons to 21," he tweeted recently.

He praised the announcement and urged lawmakers to pass it quickly. "Obviously, it does not do everything that I think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction, and would be the most significant gun safety legislation to pass Congress in decades," he said in a statement.

"With bipartisan support, there are no excuses for delay, and no reason why it should not quickly move through the Senate and the House," he added.

Heavily armed officers delayed confronting a gunman in Uvalde, Texas, for more than an hour despite supervisors at the scene being told that some trapped with him in two elementary school classrooms needed medical treatment, a new review of video footage and other investigative material shows. Instead, the documents show, they waited for protective equipment to lower the risk to law enforcement officers.

The school district police chief, who was leading the response to the May 24 shooting, appeared to be agonizing over the length of time it was taking to secure the shields that would help protect officers and to find a key for the classroom doors, according to law enforcement documents and video gathered as part of the investigation reviewed by The New York Times.

The chief, Pete Arredondo, and others at the scene became aware that not everyone inside the classrooms was dead, the documents showed, including a report from a school district police officer whose wife, a teacher, had spoken to him by phone from one of the classrooms to say she had been shot.

More than a dozen of the 33 children and three teachers originally in the two classrooms remained alive during the 1 hour and 17 minutes from the time the shooting began inside the classrooms to when four officers made entry, law enforcement investigators have concluded.

“People are going to ask why we’re taking so long,” a man who investigators believe to be Arredondo could be heard saying, according to a transcript of officers’ body camera footage. “We’re trying to preserve the rest of the life.”

Investigators have been working to determine whether any of those who died could have been saved, according to an official with knowledge of the effort. But there is no question that some of the victims were still alive and in desperate need of medical attention. One teacher died in an ambulance. Three children died at nearby hospitals, according to the documents.

Supervisors at the scene at some point became aware that there were people inside the classrooms who needed saving.

“We think there are some injuries in there,” the man believed to be Arredondo said several minutes before the breach, according to the transcript. “And so you know what we did, we cleared off the rest of the building so we wouldn’t have any more, besides what’s already in there, obviously.”

But even with additional documents and video, much about the chaotic scene remained unclear, including precisely when Arredondo and other senior officers became aware of injuries inside the classrooms. It is not known whether Arredondo or other officers inside the school learned of the 911 calls from a child inside the classrooms.

Among the revelations in the documents: The gunman, Salvador Ramos, had a “hellfire” trigger device meant to allow a semi-automatic AR-15-style rifle to be fired more like an automatic weapon; some of the officers who first arrived at the school had more firepower than previously known; and Arredondo learned the gunman’s identity while inside the school and attempted in vain to communicate with him.

But with two officers who initially approached the door shot at and grazed, Arredondo appeared to have decided that quickly breaching the classrooms without protection would have led to officers possibly being killed. He focused instead on getting other children out of the school while waiting for additional equipment.

The response by the police at Robb Elementary School is now the subject of overlapping investigations by the Texas state police and the U.S. Justice Department.

Now, more than two weeks after the gunman killed 19 children and two teachers, a clearer picture of the timeline of events and the police response has emerged.

A cascade of failures took place at the school: the local police radio system, later tests showed, did not function properly inside the building; classroom doors could not be quickly locked in an emergency; and after an initial burst of shooting from the gunman, no police officer went near the door again for more than 40 minutes, instead hanging back.

According to the documents, Arredondo, who had earlier focused on evacuating other classrooms, began to discuss breaching the classrooms about an hour after the gunfire started inside the school at 11:33 a.m. He did so after several shots could be heard inside the classrooms around 12:21 p.m., video footage showed.

By that point, officers in and around the school had been growing increasingly impatient. “If there’s kids in there, we need to go in there,” one officer could be heard saying, according to the documents. Another responded, “Whoever is in charge will determine that.”

A team made up of specially trained Border Patrol agents and a sheriff’s deputy finally went in after the gunman and killed him at 12:50 p.m.

The lack of clear orders underscored the chaos and poor communication in a response that included dozens of state and local police officers, sheriff’s deputies and federal agents from the Border Patrol, many of whom lived or worked nearby.

And most of the officers arrived with radios that did not function well inside the school building, according to the investigators’ review.

Arredondo arrived at the scene without any radio at all, and used a cellphone for some communications. It was not clear if he ever received a radio.

Arredondo did not respond to several requests for comment.

In an interview published late Thursday by The Texas Tribune, Arredondo, whose department had jurisdiction over Uvalde schools, said he never considered himself the commander at the scene and had assumed someone else had taken control of the response.

“I didn’t issue any orders,” Arredondo said. He said that the inability to find a key to the classrooms was the reason for the delay in entering, and that he had left his police radios behind because they would have been an encumbrance.

He said that without the radios, he was unaware of the 911 calls coming from the classroom, and that none of the other officers in the hall had relayed that information.

The investigative documents provide additional details about the gunman and the weaponry he acquired.

Before entering the school, he had amassed an arsenal that included two AR-15-style rifles, accessories and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, according to the documents. He spent more than $6,000.

Among the purchases was the “hellfire” trigger device, but the gunman did not appear to have succeeded in using it during the attack, according to an analysis by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

After the gunman entered the school, surveillance footage showed him walking through nearly empty blue and green hallways. He did not appear to fire until he got to Room 111 and Room 112.

It was not clear why he stopped there. He had been a student at the school as a child, and his time there may have overlapped with at least one of the teachers, Irma Garcia, who taught in Room 112, according to the documents.

Arredondo was among the first officers to enter the school and approach the classrooms where the gunman was.

Two Uvalde Police Department officers, a lieutenant and a sergeant, were shot and suffered grazing wounds after they tried to peer through a window in one of the classroom doors, the surveillance footage showed. The entire group of officers who had arrived by then sought cover down the hallway.

Fifteen children had come to class in Room 111 that Tuesday, according to the documents, along with one teacher, Arnulfo Reyes. Eleven of the children died in the shooting, three were uninjured, and one was wounded. Reyes was shot but survived.

In Room 112, which is connected internally by a thin blue door, there were 18 students and two teachers, Garcia and the teacher who had called her husband after being shot, Eva Mireles. Nine children were wounded but survived and one was listed as uninjured, according to the documents.

That message appeared to have reached a sergeant from the Uvalde Police Department, who was near Arredondo inside of the school.

“There’s a teacher shot in there,” an officer could be heard telling the sergeant, according to the transcript, just before 12:30 p.m.

“I know,” the sergeant replied.

By that time, heavily armed tactical officers had arrived, along with protective shields. Arredondo at that point signaled his support for going into the room, but began asking repeatedly for keys that would work on the door.

It was not clear from the transcript if anyone had tried the door to see if it was locked.

Around that time, an officer also informed Arredondo of the gunman’s name.

“Mr. Ramos? Can you hear us, Mr. Ramos? Please respond,” the chief said, according to the transcript. Ramos gave no answer.

According to the transcript of body camera video, Arredondo could be heard speaking into a phone, preparing for a breach and asking for someone to look into the windows of one of the classrooms to see if anything could be seen.

By 12:46 p.m. he gave his approval to enter the room. “If y’all are ready to do it, you do it,” he said, according to the transcript.

Minutes later, the team went in.

Ramos was in a corner near a closet, body camera footage showed. He exchanged fire with the officers as they entered. One of the bullets appeared to have struck the gunman in the head, killing him.

Across the room, the bodies of children lay in an unmoving mass, according to the documents. A similar cluster of bodies lay in Room 112.

Officers could be seen in video footage rushing a few children out of the room and carrying out Mireles. She reached an ambulance, but died before reaching a hospital.

For a time, the fourth graders’ bodies lay where they had been taken, contorted on blood-streaked linoleum under a large colorful banner. “Class of 2022,” it read. “Congrats!”

“We’re trying to preserve the rest of the life.” Investigators have been working to determine whether any of those who died could have been saved, according to an official with knowledge of the effort. “And so you know what we did, we cleared off the rest of the building so we wouldn’t have any more, besides what’s already in there, obviously.” But even with additional documents and video, much about the chaotic scene remained unclear, including precisely when Arredondo and other senior officers became aware of injuries inside the classrooms. On World Oceans Day, the White House announced a new national marine sanctuary to preserve the Hudson Canyon. The proposal includes designating the largest undersea canyon on the Atlantic coast as one of the nation's next underwater parks. Hudson Canyon is an ecological hotspot located approximately 100 miles off the coast of New York and it reaches depths of 2.5 miles.

As per the proposal by US President Joe Biden's administration, Hudson Canyon would become a national marine sanctuary. The canyon is a vast gorge in the Atlantic Ocean and is home to endangered whales, sharks and sea turtles. Hudson Canyon would receive permanent federal protection.

Media reports noted that Hudson Canyon would be off-limits to oil and gas drilling. Such restriction is aimed at protecting marine life and cold-water coral. Importantly, before finalisation, the proposal will undergo a public comment period through August 8.

As quoted in an NYT, Richard W Spinrad, the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said in a statement: "A sanctuary near one of the most densely populated areas of the Northeast U.S. would connect diverse communities across the region to the ocean and the canyon in new and different ways." Spinrad further added that the sanctuary would leave "a lasting legacy for future generations."

As per the Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium, Hudson Canyon would be the first national marine sanctuary off New York and New Jersey.

Biden's administration also announced that the United States will phase out single-use plastics in national parks and other public lands over the next decade.

US: Police say a 10-year-old girl fatally shot a woman, arrested

United States president Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden’s first wife – Kathleen Buhle – recounted her time with the Biden family in her new book “If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, and Healing”. One of the major incidents mentioned in the book, which will be releasing next week, was the “fear of exclusion” that she went through after being denied Secret Service Protection when Biden was vice-president of the United States. This was before Buhle and Hunter Biden ended their marriage amid the latter’s highly public addiction problems and Buhle wrote that it made her feel like “an outsider” in the Biden family.

According to the book, the Secret Service met with members of the Biden family just before Biden was appointed vice-president and the agent explained that the security details will be provided to Hunter and her kids “throughout the day”. However, when it came to Buhle, the Secret Service said that she would only be “picked up and included in any plan” if there was “any type of emergency”.

What I heard in his words: 'I was not truly a Biden': Hunter Biden's ex-wife makes startling revelation in new book,” Buhle wrote in the excerpt accessed by The Guardian.

'I was not truly a Biden': Hunter Biden's ex-wife makes startling revelation in new book

The United States on Wednesday announced a $100 million initiative to train half a million health workers across Latin America at a summit that was conceived as a platform to showcase U.S. leadership in reviving Latin American economies and tackling migratory pressures.

The pandemic "showed us the many cracks in our global health systems and underscored the importance of strong and resilient health systems for the entire population," a White House statement said.

But, the United States President Joe Biden’s plan to unveil a package to spur recovery in Latin America, help stem immigration and counter China's growing regional economic clout has been marred by a partial boycott by leaders upset at Washington's decision to exclude Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the summit.

U.S. officials hope the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles and a parallel gathering of top business executives can pave the way for greater economic cooperation as regional nations grappling with higher inflation work to bring supply chains stretched by the COVID-19 pandemic closer to home.

"It's much better for us ... to have a supply chain here in the Americas than it is for us to be dependent on a supply chain that comes from China," U.S. ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar told Reuters on the sidelines of the summit.

Seeking to present alternatives to China, U.S. officials said Biden would unveil an "Americas Partnership" on Wednesday to speed pandemic recovery by building on existing trade deals.

The plan would aim to mobilize investments, reinvigorate the Inter-American Development Bank, create clean energy jobs, strengthen supply chains and promote "sustainable and inclusive trade" in the region, one administration official said.

Still, an initiative that promotes jobs abroad could face U.S. protectionist pushback, as well as questions about how many widely divergent economies could make it work.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic wreaked havoc across the globe in the past two years. The deadly virus killed millions of people and left millions grieving. To counter the virus, Covid vaccines were developed in record time. However, the world faced a massive challenge of distributing jabs equally in different parts of the world. When high- and upper-middle-income countries were administering first and second doses of the vaccine, some nations were not able to reach this target – and most of them were in Africa.

WHO once stated that there are enough doses of vaccines globally to drive down transmission and save many lives if they, in time, reach the people who need them most around the world.

A recent report also highlighted a similar case. When vaccines could have been used wisely, instead, they went to waste.

NBC News reported that more than 82 million Covid vaccine doses went to waste in the United States from December 2020 until the middle of May.

The US-based media outlet reported citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shared with it.

The number is basically an increase from the 65 million doses. It is a count CDC told the news agency Associated Press that had been wasted as of late February. As per the media outlet, the majority of discarded doses came from CVS and Walmart.

Earlier this year in February, CDC explained that as demand for Covid vaccines decreases, more vaccines will go to waste. The CDC states on its website: "As the rate of vaccine administration slows, the likelihood of leaving unused doses in a vial may increase, even when providers continue to follow best practices to use every dose possible."

As per the report by NBC News, part of the waste is because doses reached their expiration date before they could be administered to patients.

Some doses were ruined due to power outages because vials are supposed to be kept in freezers. The report also noted unused doses from opened vials that had to be discarded at day's end.

According to the CDC, over 751 million Covid vaccine doses in the United States are distributed and administered over 589 million doses.

US has wasted over 82 million coronavirus vaccine doses: Report

The United States President Joe Biden on Monday will suspend tariffs for two years on solar panel imports from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, but not China, as the US seeks to boost domestic clean energy manufacturing, the White House said.

The Biden administration will invoke the Defence Production Act (DPA) to accelerate domestic production, and use the federal government's purchasing power to increase the demand.

"Today's clean energy technologies are a critical part of the arsenal we must harness to lower energy costs for families, reduce risks to our power grid, and tackle the urgent crisis of a changing climate," a White House spokesperson said.

China is excluded as the Commerce Department investigates whether certain Chinese companies are circumventing US customs duties by assembling parts in the four countries. China is a dominant player in solar panel production with about 80% of the world’s solar manufacturing supply chain running through China.

As compared to when Biden took office, the US was on track to triple domestic solar manufacturing capacity by 2024, from 7.5 gigawatts to 22.5 gigawatts, enough to enable 3.3 million homes to switch to solar each year.
Monday's actions include invoking the DPA to force the manufacture of clean energy in key areas including solar parts like photovoltaic modules and module components.

Former President Donald Trump previously used the same powers during the Covid pandemic to increase the production of medicines and equipment, and it was also invoked during World War II.

The two-year tariff suspension window meanwhile is intended as a bridge to ensure the United States has access to a sufficient supply of parts to meet electricity generation needs while domestic capacity scales up.

In the United States, an increase in gun violence and mass killings has sparked renewed calls for reform of the nation's gun laws. Although gun attacks have become a common thing, but a recent mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas shocked the nation. The shooting at the school killed 21 people, including small children. The recent spike in such cases has spurred cries for action. Some are even debating whether authorities should allow teachers to carry arms. The idea of permitting teachers and other school staff to carry guns is not entirely new. A US media report suggested that after the 2018 Parkland shooting, many Republican-controlled legislatures considered a similar move. Now, the debate has reignited.

Mass shootings trigger debate whether teachers be allowed to carry guns in America?

South Korea and the United States staged their first combined military drill involving an American aircraft carrier since 2017. On the other side, North Korea shows signs of resuming nuclear tests.

South Korea & US conduct military drills to deter North Korea

The South Korea military believes that North Korea has launched at least one ballistic missile off its east coast on Sunday. The missile test came just hours after South Korea and the United States wrapped up their first joint military drill involving a US aircraft carrier in more than four years, according to AFP. It was also confirmed by the Japanese Coastguard who cited the defence ministry and said that “possible ballistic missiles” were launched on Pyongyang’s orders. Earlier, North Korea has expressed its displeasure at the joint drills conducted by South Korea and the United States by calling them “rehearsals for invasion” and the launch is being seen as an answer to the drills.

"North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile(s) into the East Sea," Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Sunday according to AFP.

This is the second time in two months that North Korea has conducted a missile test. Last month, they test-fired three missiles, including the Hwasong-17 – possibly the largest intercontinental ballistic missile in its arsenal.

This is all being considered to be a show of power amidst the three-day drill conducted by Seoul and Washington. It was conducted on the USS Ronald Reagan and it was the first joint drill since Yoon Suk-yeol became the president of South Korea.

"The exercise consolidated the two countries' determination to sternly respond to any North Korean provocations, while demonstrating the US commitment to provide extended deterrence," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement according to the AFP report.

The shortage of baby formula in the United States has caused a lot of problem in the last few weeks but the authorities announced on Wednesday that they were successful in arranging two additional shipments of formula from overseas as part of the initiative called “Operation Fly Formula”. The White House said that 3.7 million bottles worth of baby formula will be transported to the United States from the Heathrow Airport in United Kingdom. The mission will be carried out by the help of emergency flights, and it is reportedly going to start from June 9. Australian company Bubs will also be supplying 4.6 million bottles which will reach Pennsylvania and California on June 9 and 11.

The statement from the White House stated that the two deliveries should be enough to take care of the shortage in the short run and the product should be available “in the coming weeks”.

“This first shipment, which includes Kendamil Classic and Kendamil Organic formula, will be available at Target stores across the country in the coming weeks,” the statement said.

The shortage of baby formula became a major issue in the past few weeks after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to shut down a manufacturing plant belonging to Abbott. Since then, the authorities have struggled to contain the shortage and it has caused anger among the parents.

The White House has also arranged a meeting with the largest baby formula manufacturers in the United States and an understanding can finally bring the shortage to an end.
