Polio outbreak in New York? Two cases within weeks; last case before this was in 2013

United States President Joe Biden signed a bill on Tuesday that will be a huge boost to domestic chip manufacturing companies. The CHIPS and Science Act will make sure that around $200 billion is invested into the manufacturing of semiconductors over the next five years. The motive behind this initiative is to regain the top spot in the industry from China and to make the US less reliant on other countries — something that happened due to the damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Today America is delivering, delivering, and I honest to God believe that 50, 75, 100 years from now from people who will look back on this week, they'll know that we met this moment," Biden said.

According to CNN, the event was attended by executives from HP and Intel, both Republican and Democratic politicians, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

Joe Biden signs bill to help US semiconductor producers compete with China

The Biden administration has decided to stretch out its limited supply of monkeypox vaccine by allowing a different method of injection that uses one-fifth as much per shot, according to people familiar with the discussions.

In order for the Food and Drug Administration to authorize so-called intradermal injection, which would involve injecting one-fifth of the current dose into the skin instead of a full dose into underlying fat, the Department of Health and Human Services will need to issue a new emergency declaration allowing regulators to invoke the FDA’s emergency-use powers. That declaration is expected as early as Tuesday afternoon.

The move would help alleviate a shortage of vaccine that has turned into a growing political and public health problem for the administration.

The administration has faced a barrage of criticism that it was too slow to ship vaccine that was ready for use to the United States from Denmark, where it was manufactured, and too slow to order that bulk vaccine stocks be processed into vials after the disease first surfaced in the U.S. in mid-May.

In less than three months, more than 8,900 monkeypox cases have been reported. The virus spreads from person to person primarily through close physical contact with infectious lesions.

Even though it invested more than $1 billion in developing the two-dose vaccine known as Jynneos that works against both monkeypox and smallpox, the government has only 1.1 million shots on hand. It needs about three times as many doses to cover the 1.6 million to 1.7 million Americans who, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are at high risk of contracting monkeypox.

The vaccine is currently delivered in two 0.5 milliliter doses 28 days apart, with immune protection reaching its “maximum” 14 days after the second dose, according to the CDC.

The shot is recommended by the CDC for people who have been exposed to monkeypox and those who might be likely to get it. Those in the latter category include people identified as a contact of someone with monkeypox, those who know a sexual partner from the past 14 days was diagnosed with the disease and those who have had “multiple” sexual partners in that time frame in an area with “known monkeypox.”

Federal health officials said last week that so far, they have distributed about 600,000 doses of the vaccine to state and local jurisdictions.

The Department of Health and Human Services last week also issued a broader public-emergency declaration that allowed the federal government to more easily allot money and other resources to fight the virus.

Research on intradermal injection of the monkeypox vaccine is essentially limited to one study. It showed that when the vaccine was injected between skin layers, it induced an immune response comparable to that from a standard injection into the fat underneath the skin. Federal officials have consulted with a variety of outside groups about switching to the intradermal injection approach, including the Infectious Diseases Society of America, according to people familiar with the talks.

Some outside experts have criticized the data backing up the method for monkeypox as too thin and narrowly focused. The government’s decision to go with it is heavily based on a 2015 study that was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. John Beigel, an NIH associate director of clinical research who has briefed federal health officials and the World Health Organization, said that switching to the intradermal method was a better option for preserving vaccine than administering just one of the two recommended doses, as some jurisdictions now do. One shot does not prompt nearly as strong an immune response as two, he said.

“The upside is you can stretch out doses,” said John Moore, a virus expert at Weill Cornell Medicine. “The downside is if you cut it too far or take too many liberties, you reduce the efficacy. And how are you going to know that? It’s educated guesswork.”

The intradermal method can be complicated for vaccinators, who must guide a needle into a thin space. If a vaccinator goes too deep and inserts the dose into fat, the patient might not receive enough vaccine, experts say. But if the needle is not inserted far enough, some of the vaccine could leak back out.

Such shots typically induce more redness and swelling but are less painful than a standard injection, the 2015 study showed.

They have previously been used in polio vaccination campaigns, for rabies and with tuberculosis skin tests.

The NIH had planned further studies into how well such shots work with the monkeypox vaccine, but the results were not expected until the late fall or early winter. Over the weekend, top federal officials came to a consensus that the government needed to embrace the approach now.

US moves to stretch out monkeypox vaccine supply

US secretary of state Antony Blinken is on a three-nation tour of Africa. At the first stop of his trip in South Africa, Blinken said that the US is seeking a true partnership with Africa and not trying to outdo other world powers.

US strategy for Africa focuses on democracy, economy and climate

Early morning of July 31, 2022 marked the culmination of the United States’ relentless 11-year hunt for its most wanted terrorist — al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri — bringing closure to the kin of 9/11 victims.

Zawahiri met a violent death, and since the US had picked an unmanned advanced technology warfare option for the precision strike in the upscale, highly-secure neighbourhood of Kabul, it knew collecting DNA sample for identity confirmation testing, as in Osama Bin Laden’s case, was not possible, and must have ensured a visual feed and photographic evidence to confirm the kill.

The visuals of the killing must have been gory, given one of the two, or both, likely options of the Hellfire RNX missiles being used to exterminate the biggest bugbear of United States. One Hellfire variant uses sword-like blades and a set of six rotors that can shred even the metal bodies of tanks and armoured vehicles to reach the target. Two such missiles fired at Zawahiri would have inflicted lethal gashes and left the third-floor balcony of the safehouse in the tony Sherpur locality of Kabul quite bloodied.

The other option is a Hellfire RNX with small-munition equivalent to a hand grenade. Two missiles on target would have severely dismembered the target.

The al-Qaeda has not confirmed Zawahiri’s death, while Taliban issued a vague statement denying any knowledge of his presence in Kabul, saying it will probe US claims. The US has still not shared the evidence (it must be having) to prove Zawahiri’s annihilation.

It was a major breakthrough for the US and the news hogged limelight, taking some attention off China’s aggressive posturing on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Taipei visit. It will also be seen as US posturing and flexing its expertise in advanced techno warfare, and not being bogged down by the military might of China and its threats.

The doggedness with which US intelligence and defence agencies have been pursuing the enemies of the state is highly praiseworthy and worth emulating for a country like India which has been battling terrorism and bleeding for decades now.

Russia may have launched a "spy satellite" to stalk an American spy satellite. A few months back, in February, the United States launched USA 326, a spy satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani said on Wednesday (August 3) that in a statement that it was sending a delegation to Vienna to resume talks to revive the 2015 agreement on its nuclear programme. A top nuclear negotiator and a senior US envoy will travel this week. The plan was notified by the officials from both governments as the process that was stalled in June appears to have been rekindled. Kanani said, "As part of the policy of lifting cruel sanctions against our country, Iran's negotiating team led by Ali Bagheri, the Islamic republic's chief negotiator, will leave for Vienna in a few hours." A US official said Rob Malley, who is the US special envoy for Iran, will travel to Vienna for talks this week on reviving the nuclear agreement. The official did not provide any other details. ALSO READ | Biden to sign second executive order to safeguard abortion rights Differences and conflicts between Iran and the United States are the reason why the talks related to the 2015 nuclear deal remained stagnant after the negotiations began in April 2021 in Vienna. The two sides have negotiated indirectly through the European Union coordinator in a bid to bring the US back into the deal and to lift sanctions on Iran, on the basis that Tehran would return to its nuclear commitments. When the deal was signed in 2015, Iran agreed to a pact with six major powers to limit its nuclear program. After the pact, it was harder for Iran to obtain a weapon in return for relief from economic sanctions. In a turn of events, then US President Donald Trump reneged on the deal in 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran. The decision by the former US president led Tehran to start violating the agreement's nuclear limits about a year later. Last week, the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell submitted a new draft text and urged all sides to accept it or "risk a dangerous nuclear crisis". Borrell is also the coordinator of the nuclear talks between Iran and world powers. Expressing "optimism", Kanani added: In this round of talks, which will take place as before with the coordination of the EU, discussions will be held regarding the ideas presented by the parties including those presented this week by Iran to the other party." The statement added that Iran hoped "the opposing parties will resolve the situation by taking the necessary decisions and seriously focusing on resolving the remaining issues". Top Iran and US negotiators to resume frayed nuclear talks in Vienna

In order to strengthen frayed relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the United States will sell them major missile defence systems worth over $5 billion.

As inflation hits 40-year highs and threatens his approval ratings, US President Joe Biden met leaders of the two countries in Saudi Arabia on a trip two weeks ago.

In separate deals, the US State Department approved the potential sale of Patriot missile interceptors to Saudi Arabia and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile interceptors to the United Arab Emirates, according to the Pentagon.

While Raytheon Technologies is the prime contractor for the Patriot interceptors and equipment, Lockheed Martin was the prime contractor for the THAAD interceptors and equipment.

The State Department said in a statement that "These missiles are used to defend the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's borders against persistent Houthi cross-border unmanned aerial system and ballistic missile attacks on civilian sites and critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia."

"The proposed sale will improve the UAE's ability to meet current and future ballistic missile threats in the region, and reduce dependence on US forces," it added.

The potential deals are in the works as the procedural step of notifying Congress is often the first public acknowledgment.

Amid the war in Ukraine and faltering talks to revive a nuclear deal with Iran, the West has increased its efforts to court the major oil-producing state.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the US and European countries imposed strict sanctions on Moscow, and in retaliation, Russian President Vladimir Putin halted gas supplies to the bloc.

As a result, European countries are looking to diversify their sources of energy and have asked the world's largest oil exporter, Riyadh to raise production.

United States to send $550 million worth of new weapons to Ukraine amid ongoing crisis

No point denying that the Taliban in Kabul has made India nervous just like there’s no doubt that India anticipated nothing less from the United States of America's tacit support to the Pakistan army who in turn sheltered Osama & Haqqani under the Pentagon's complete knowledge. It’s hilarious how the democrats & republicans both took turns, under each of their presidencies and made complete fools of the so-called righteous Americans, under the garb of war on Terror. All this while always being a non-nato ally of Pakistan who harboured UN-designated terrorists as their honoured guests.

Well, how the Americans get played by both their government parties is their fate and how the pentagon has gone all out to support many morally degraded armies and even terrorists in the past, could be a thesis in itself.

India always was aware of the corruption dipped Kabul government & army wouldn’t stand against the Taliban, as was rightly mentioned in one of Ajit Doval's speeches in the US. Of course, the story would’ve been different, if the Afghan Tajik+Uzbek+ alliance was to be prepared against the Taliban terrorists. No prizes for guessing which country across the Atlantic didn’t let that be organized. All that’s now for the long history chapter of American shame from WW2, Vietnam etc

Taliban legitimacy desperation and volatile situation in Kabul have thrown many balls up in the air, apparently all over the world. For example, the right-wing Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) party should use Merkel and her CDU party's inept handling of natos Afgan policy and show her the door in the upcoming 21 September elections. Closer home, we all know how Modi loves to make every challenge into an opportunity. Well, this just is one of them, provided they meticulously and strongly act on it.

If the past 75 years of analyzing Pakistani terrorism is anything to go by, it’s hogwash to pin it to an ideology. That’s a light bind a moving truck which everyone is running after. The modern-day terrorist is not only equipped with the best arms but now also has at its disposal an airforce, embassies around the world, a seat at the UN, an ecosystem in left media, etc. How? Just connect all dots and they would all lead to the NERVE CENTER of Terrorism i.e. GHQ, Rawalpindi.

Now, remember the mention of balls in the air? Let's catch them one by one and here comes the ‘Defining’ part.

India's defining moment

United States President Joe Biden said that Washington has expressed its readiness to open talks with Moscow, the Russian state-controlled news television network RT reported on Monday (August 1). The report mentioned that the negotiation is apparently "a new arms control framework" with Russia to potentially replace the New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty).

As quoted by the RT website, Biden said: "Today, my Administration is ready to expeditiously negotiate a new arms control framework to replace New START when it expires in 2026. But negotiation requires a willing partner operating in good faith."

A New Zealand man who helped build a US-based pornography firm by dragooning young women into filming adult videos has pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

A New Zealand man who helped build a US-based pornography firm by dragooning young women into filming adult videos has pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. Matthew Isaac Wolfe, 40, admitted to his involvement in the ploy that recruited women to perform in videos for GirlsDoPorn, on the promise that the content would not be streamed in the United States and would not be uploaded online. Wolfe is the fourth defendant to plead guilty in connection to the case. The website that generates more than US$17m in revenue was launched in 2006 by New Zealander Michael Pratt. The operations were managed by Ruben Garcia and Wolfe, who moved to the U.S. in 2011 to help Pratt. As per the California court, Wolfe filmed about 100 videos, uploaded them on to the internet, oversaw the companies’ finances and promoted the business. He also trained co-defendant Theodore Gyi, a cameraman, on how to run video shoots, including Gyi to tell the women the videos would not be uploaded online. Wolfe admitted that to persuade the women to appear in the videos, he'd misled them by convincing them that the videos would neither be featured online nor released in the United States. The Department of Justice said Wolfe knew these representations were false because the videos were exclusively marketed and distributed on the internet. They were promised that the footage would go straight to DVD for wealthy buyers in other countries, in particular Australia and New Zealand, where the defendants come from. The women, who applied to a modelling call-out on Craigslist, were contacted by other women who acted as “references” pitching the idea of making adult films that would never go online. The women reported feeling pressured to take part and those who tried to back out were threatened. To persuade women to appear in the films, Wolfe told the victims that no one who knew the women would ever find out about the videos, which he knew was false, the court said, because the videos were exclusively marketed and posted on the internet and have been viewed more than a billion times. The court said that Wolfe was aware of the fact that personal identifying information and social media accounts were being posted on pornwikileaks.com, a site controlled by Pratt, subjecting the victims to severe harassment. “This crime had a devastating impact on the victims,” said US attorney Randy Grossman. “We will seek justice for human trafficking victims in hopes that it will help them reclaim their lives and leave the pain of this experience in the past. Wolfe has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the crime. Meanwhile, the FBI is offering a reward of up to US$50,000 for information leading to the location and arrest of Pratt, 39, who continues to evade authorities. In 2020, a US judge awarded US$12.7m in damages to the 22 women who were defrauded.

Flash floods in the eastern part of Kentucky in United States claimed the lives of at least 25 people and injured another 12 as rescue operations continued on Saturday. According to authorities, it is the worst natural disaster to hit the region in almost a decade and they expect the death toll to increase in the coming days. Governor Andy Beshear told the media that the authorities are looking for other people who may be stranded in the area and there can be “many more” casualties.

“It’s going to get worse. And I think that we will be updating it, maybe even for weeks to come ... There are still so many people unaccounted for. And in this area, it’s going to be a hard task to get a firm number of folks unaccounted for,” Beshear said, according to a Reuters report.

Since the Supreme Court restored the national right to the procedure, at least 43 facilities around the country have ceased performing abortions, according to research released on Thursday. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organisation that promotes access to abortion, 11 states have outlawed abortions either after six weeks of pregnancy or completely in the month after the landmark June 24 verdict. The institute has determined that 43 clinics, including 23 in Texas alone, 5 in Oklahoma, and 5 in Alabama, have shut down or redirected their resources to other types of care.

The Pink House, also known as the Jackson Women's Health Organization, which was at the centre of the Supreme Court case, shuttered on July 7 after serving as Mississippi's sole abortion facility for a considerable amount of time. "The already dire state of abortion access in many parts of the country will continue to deteriorate and more states will adopt abortion bans in the coming weeks and months," the study authors wrote, as reported by AFP.

Abortion is prohibited by law in certain places, including Louisiana and North Dakota, although the implementation of these new regulations has been hampered by court disputes. After finding the bacteria behind a rare but serious disease for the first time in the continental United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday issued a health advisory to clinicians.

During an investigation of two human melioidosis cases, B. pseudomallei or Burkholderia pseudomallei was detected in puddle water and soil samples in southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast region.

The household products and the environment around the homes of two people, who got sick due to the same bacteria as they lived in close geographic proximity, were investigated.

As a result of the bacteria, they started experiencing nonspecific symptoms such as fever, headaches, and joint pain.

Mostly related to travel to tropical and subtropical regions, there are about 12 cases in the US per year on average.

Linking a cluster of four people across four states to an imported contaminated aromatherapy spray, Melioidosis caused blood infections, abscess formation, and pneumonia.

The global death rate for those who come into contact with the bacteria is 10-50 per cent although most healthy people do not develop melioidosis.

Advising people in southern Mississippi to take extra precautions, the CDC said underlying conditions include excessive alcohol use, chronic lung or kidney disease, and diabetes.

Highlighting that the risk of melioidosis for the general population continues to be very low, CDC added that precautions include wearing waterproof boots and gloves while gardening, protecting open wounds with dressing, and avoiding contact with soil and muddy water.

In the wake of indications North Korea may perform its first nuclear test since 2017, the nation's state media on Thursday reported that the leader Kim Jong Un has declared that his nation is prepared to mobilise its nuclear war deterrent and for any military conflict with the United States. According to the official KCNA news agency, Kim made the comments during a speech at a celebration to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Korean War armistice on July 27. As per a Reuters report, Kim said, the confrontation with the US presented a nuclear danger because it forced the North to complete an "urgent historical task" of bolstering its self-defence.

"Our armed forces are thoroughly prepared to respond to any crisis, and our nation's nuclear war deterrence is also fully ready to mobilise its absolute strength faithfully, accurately and promptly to its mission," he said.

The declaration that Pyongyang has finished making preparations to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017 was already made by South Korean and American officials prior to Jong Un's address.

"I once again make it clear that North Korea is fully ready for any military confrontation with the United States," Kim said.

The North has long accused the United States of double standards in military activities and of having a hostile foreign policy toward Pyongyang. They claim that this undermines efforts to restart negotiations designed to curtail the nation's nuclear and missile programmes in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

"That is driving bilateral relations to the point where it is difficult to turn back, into a state of conflict."
