Nearly two years after President Donald Trump refused to accept his defeat in the 2020 election, some of his most loyal Republican acolytes might follow in his footsteps.

When asked, six Trump-backed Republican nominees for governor and the Senate in midterm battlegrounds would not commit to accepting this year’s election results, and another six Republicans ignored or declined to answer a question about embracing the November outcome. All of them, along with many other GOP candidates, have preemptively cast doubt on how their states count votes.

The New York Times contacted Republican and Democratic candidates or their aides in 20 key contests for governor and the Senate. All of the Democrats said, or have said publicly, that they would respect the November results — including Stacey Abrams of Georgia, who refused to concede her 2018 defeat to Brian Kemp in the state’s race for governor. Kemp, now running against her for another term, “will of course accept the outcome of the 2022 election,” said his press secretary, Tate Mitchell.

But several Republicans endorsed by Trump are hesitant to say that they will not fight the results.

Among the party’s Senate candidates, Rep. Ted Budd in North Carolina, Blake Masters in Arizona, Kelly Tshibaka in Alaska and J.D. Vance in Ohio all declined to commit to accepting the 2022 results. So did Tudor Dixon, the Republican nominee for governor of Michigan, and Geoff Diehl, who won the GOP primary for governor of Massachusetts this month.

The candidates and their aides offered an array of explanations. Some blamed Democratic state election officials or made unsubstantiated claims that their opponents would cheat. In Alaska, a spokesperson for Tshibaka pointed to a new ranked choice voting system that has been criticised by Republicans and already helped deliver victory to a Democrat in a House special election this year.

An aide to Dixon, Sara Broadwater, said “there’s no reason to believe” that Michigan election officials, including Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic secretary of state, “are very serious about secure elections.”

To some degree, the stances by these Republican candidates — which echo Trump’s comments before the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections — may amount to political posturing, in an effort to appeal to GOP voters who do not believe the former president lost in 2020. An aide to one Republican nominee insisted that the candidate would accept this year’s results, but the aide declined to be publicly identified saying so.

And unlike Trump two years ago, the candidates who suggest they might dispute the November results do not hold executive office and lack control of the levers of government power. If any were to reject a fair defeat, they would be far less likely to ignite the kind of democratic crisis that Trump set off after his 2020 loss.

But they do have loud megaphones in a highly polarized media environment, and any unwarranted challenges from the candidates and their allies could fuel anger, confusion and misinformation.

“The danger of a Trumpist coup is far from over,” said Rosa Brooks, a law professor at Georgetown University who in early 2020 convened a group to brainstorm ways Trump could disrupt that year’s election. “As long as we have a significant number of Americans who don’t accept principles of democracy and the rule of law, our democracy remains in jeopardy.”

The positions of these Republican candidates also reflect how, over the past two years, some of those aligned with Trump increasingly reject the idea that it is possible for their side to lose a legitimate election.

“You accept the results of the election if the election is fair and honest,” said John Fredericks, a syndicated talk radio host who was a chair of Trump’s campaigns in Virginia in 2016 and 2020. “If it’s not fair and honest, you don’t.”

Still, many Republican candidates, including several who have cast doubt on the 2020 outcome, said they would recognize this year’s results. Darren Bailey, the Republican nominee for governor of Illinois — who said in a June interview that he did not know if the 2020 election had been decided fairly — responded that “yes,” he would accept the 2022 result.

In Nevada, the campaign of Adam Laxalt, the Republican nominee for Senate, said he would not challenge the final results — even though Laxalt, a former state attorney general, helped lead the effort to overturn Trump’s 2020 defeat in the state, spoke last year about plans to file lawsuits to contest the 2022 election and called voter fraud the “biggest issue” in his campaign.

“Of course he’ll accept Nevada’s certified election results, even if your failing publication won’t,” said Brian Freimuth, a spokesperson for Laxalt.

And Dr Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, who said during his successful Republican primary campaign for Senate that “we cannot move on” from the 2020 election, promised to uphold voters’ will.

“Yes, Dr&nbsp;Oz will accept the result of the PA Senate race in November,” Rachel Tripp, an Oz spokesperson, wrote in a text message.

Three other Republican Senate candidates — Herschel Walker in Georgia, Joe O’Dea in Colorado and Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska — committed to embracing their state’s election results. So did several Republicans running for governor, including Kemp, Joe Lombardo in Nevada and Christine Drazan of Oregon.

Aides to several Republican nominees for governor who have questioned the 2020 election’s legitimacy did not respond to repeated requests for comment on their own races in November. Those candidates included Doug Mastriano of Pennsylvania, Kari Lake of Arizona, Tim Michels of Wisconsin and Dan Cox of Maryland.

Lake was asked in a radio interview this month whether she would concede a defeat to Katie Hobbs, her Democratic rival and Arizona’s secretary of state. “I’m not losing to Katie Hobbs,” Lake replied.

Hobbs’ spokesperson, Sarah Robinson, said her candidate “will accept the results of the election in November.”

Aides to Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Don Bolduc, the Republican Senate nominee in New Hampshire, declined to answer questions about acknowledging the results. Johnson has been a prolific spreader of misinformation about the 2020 election and the Capitol riot. Bolduc claimed that the 2020 contest was stolen from Trump until Thursday when he announced two days after winning his primary that President Joe Biden had won legitimately.

During a Republican primary debate in Michigan in June, Dixon would not commit to honouring the results of the primary — which she went on to win — or the general election, preemptively accusing Benson, the secretary of state, of election fraud.

“If we see the secretary of state running a fair election the way she should be, then that’s a different story,” Dixon said. “We have to see what she’s going to do to make sure it’s going to be a fair election.”

In a statement, a representative for Benson said she and her staff “work tirelessly to ensure the state’s elections are secure and accurate, and expect every candidate and election official to respect the will of the people.”

In Arizona — where Republicans spent months on a government-funded review of 2020 ballots that failed to show any evidence of fraud — Masters, the Trump-backed Republican nominee for Senate, baselessly predicted to supporters in July that even if he defeated Sen. Mark Kelly, the incumbent Democrat, enough votes would somehow be produced to flip the result.

“There’s always cheating, probably, in every election,” Masters said. “The question is, what’s the cheating capacity?”

A Masters aide, Katie Miller, sent the Times an August article in The Arizona Republic in which Masters said there was “evidence of incompetence” but not of fraud in the state’s primary election. Miller declined to say if Masters would respect the November results.

Kelly “has total trust in Arizona’s electoral process,” said a spokesperson, Sarah Guggenheimer.

An aide to Vance, Taylor Van Kirk, cited the candidate’s primary-season endorsement from Ohio’s Republican secretary of state, Frank LaRose. At the time, Vance predicted “a successfully run primary election.” But Van Kirk would not say if Vance would recognize the November outcome. Vance did not respond to messages.

Vance’s Democratic opponent, Rep. Tim Ryan, “will accept the results of the election,” said his spokesperson, Jordan Fuja.

In Alaska, Republican hesitancy to accept election results centres on the new ranked choice voting system. After losing an August special election for the House, Sarah Palin warned baselessly that the method was “very, very potentially fraught with fraud.”

Tim Murtaugh, a spokesperson for Tshibaka, who is challenging Murkowski, a fellow Republican, said his candidate would not commit to honouring the race’s outcome. Murtaugh said — not without merit — that the new voting system “was installed to protect Lisa Murkowski.”

Murkowski’s spokesperson, Shea Siegert, said that “the Alaskan people can trust” the state’s elections.

Jonathan Felts, a spokesperson for Budd, North Carolina’s Republican nominee for Senate — who in Congress voted against certifying the 2020 election — declined to say if Budd would uphold the state’s results and claimed without evidence that Cheri Beasley, the Democratic nominee and a former state Supreme Court justice, might try to disenfranchise voters.

Beasley said, “I trust that our 2022 election will be administered fairly.”

Officials on other Republican campaigns expressed worries that if voters heard too much scepticism about the validity of this year’s elections, it could lead to a replay of the Georgia Senate races in January 2021, when Democrats eked out two narrow victories after Trump spent weeks railing falsely about election fraud.

“The most important thing is to not get depressed about the elections and say, ‘Oh, it’s going to be stolen, so what’s the point of doing this?’” Diehl, the Republican nominee for governor of Massachusetts, said in a recent radio interview.

Diehl’s spokesperson, Peggy Rose, replied “no comment” when asked if he would agree to the outcome of the November election.

His Democratic opponent, Maura Healey, the state’s attorney general, said, “We will always accept the will of the people.”

Three Indian aerospace firms (GalaxEye, Ananth Technologies and XDLINX Labs) have come together to unite with an American software platform provider (Antaris) to create an earth observation satellite that will have both optical sensors and a Synthetic Aperture Radar. In layman's terms, this means that the satellite would be able to function like a camera and click colour images of the earth, amid favourable weather conditions (during the day, clear skies etc.) and also click detailed black-and-white images using a Synthetic Aperture Radar, which can provide imaging during day&amp; night and during all weather conditions. This satellite is expected to be launched by end of 2023.&nbsp;

Announcing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the companies said that they were working towards creating the world's first geospatial imaging satellite featuring both SAR and Optical sensors.

Geospatial imagery refers to the broad spectrum of work that aims to measure and visually analyze the earth from up above and understand various changes, natural processes, environmental phenomena etc.&nbsp;

Under the terms of the agreement, Antaris will provide the SaaS technology platform required to design, simulate, build and manage the earth observation satellite from GalaxEye and its onboard Drishti sensor.

Ananth Technologies will provide AIT (Assembly, Integration and Test) services and manufacturing capabilities. XDLINX Labs, will be responsible for the design of the spacecraft bus and supply chain integration services.

According to the firms that have united for this venture, they intend to solve a legacy challenge for consumers of remote sensing data. "Typically, satellite constellation operators have deployed specialized satellites to capture specific types of data. Each image or data point is captured at a unique time from a unique location, making it difficult to correlate data from separate satellites.

The new multi-sensor satellite being developed under the MOU will capture, for the first time in history, both SAR data and optical data from the same satellite—improving the ability to correlate the data and its analytical utility. &nbsp;The resulting datasets will have tremendous value for environmental, insurance and defence applications" read their statement.&nbsp;

Indian and US firms unite to build satellite with both Synthetic Aperture Radar and optical sensors

The status quo in the Taiwan Strait has been changed and disrupted after the visit of Nancy Pelosi, the highest ranking official to visit the island state of Taiwan in the past 25 years. The US House Speaker’s meeting with the head of the State and other high-ranking officials of Taiwan to discuss the “unwavering commitment of the US” to the self-ruled Taiwanese democracy. New agreements for cooperation in trade are set to be inked in the aftermath of Pelosi’s visit. &nbsp;

The obvious fallout of this landmark visit from a country like the US, providing global visibility to the independence of Taiwan, has allowed China to disrupt the uneasy peace around the island through multi-pronged military drills.&nbsp;

China has blatantly ignored the median line of the Strait and flown fighter jets across the waters, fired ballistic missiles across the island skies and seas.&nbsp;

British journalists have opined on the window of opportunity that the US provided to Chinese military officials who have been waiting for “acceptability” in such aggressions.&nbsp;

This has also resulted in the hardening of stance by both Taiwan and the US in response to Chinese belligerence. A dress rehearsal of sorts for war in the region seems to be taking place with each side conducting its own set of strategic drills in response.&nbsp;

The visit has wider significance for the South China Sea and Indo-Pacific region where there are already inflamed border and maritime conflicts. German think tanks among others have a consistent view that China could not have planned such extensive live-fire drills in the short span of Pelosi’s visit and hence, shows the premeditated nature of China’s capacity to aggressively ‘conquer’ Taiwan’s territory.
&nbsp;
Policymakers, diplomats and businessmen are all key stakeholders looking at all updates very closely. The current President Tsai Ing-wen is a hardliner against China. Major Taiwanese corporations with investments in China have been warned to choose a pro-China party such as KMT instead of extending support to Ing-wen.&nbsp;

Sanctions have been placed upon high-ranking Taiwanese officials after the second US delegation visit. Kurt Campbell. Deputy assistant to President Biden in multiple interviews has spoken about China’s unilateral and unprecedented actions in the region and termed it as an ‘overreaction’ by the Chinese bureaucracy to justify the nature of the military and political response.
&nbsp;
China has further used this opportunity for muscle-flexing its enhanced military prowess, the world’s largest navy and has created a larger threat perception in the region. This regional significance of this event came to the fore after it test-fired a surface-to-air anti-aircraft missile prior to India-US ‘Yudh Abhyas’ drills set to take place 100kms from the LAC.&nbsp;

While emphasising their deterrence policy in conducting these drills, China has tried to spread the propaganda of “saving” the Taiwanese public from Taiwan’s ruling party and rejoining them with the mainland as it “historically” should be. However, the Taiwan of today, no longer believes itself to be a part of China. They are a popular democracy with certain rights and freedoms that they have achieved through democratic mandate.
&nbsp;
The wider significance of China’s acceptability of these aggressions will determine the foreign policy and national interests of Indo-Pacific states. Russia acknowledged the ‘One China Policy’ and thus, led India to state the clear limitations of its support to Russia where its own national interest is concerned.&nbsp;

Chinese drills entered the Japanese Special Economic Zone as well, which diplomats have opined was done to solicit a response from Japan and predict any such strategic response in the future.
&nbsp;
Foreign Ministers of both sides have given strong statements with regard to the changing status quo of the region. China’s Wang Yi has made strong statements, calling the US visit “despicable”, and facilitated the cancellation of cooperation with the US on issues like cross-border crime, anti-drugs efforts, and climate issues among the key sectors.&nbsp;

All high-level dialogues have also been paused between China and the US. Alternatively, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has given strong but tempered statements where it states continuing to pursue relations with other countries while maintaining peace in the region. They will not keep being pressured into invisibility by China and their ‘One China’ propaganda.&nbsp;

Security analysts are of the opinion that continued acceptability of the “new normal” in the Taiwan Strait may result in an actual strike in garb of a drill and result in disastrous consequences for the greater region.&nbsp;

These speculations have many proponents as China has previously broken internationally accepted borders unilaterally over minor issues and continued to aggress using its “salami slicing” techniques before completely changing the status quo and resulting in longstanding heightened tensions.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
All the key stakeholders will be affected irrespective of how things turn out as precedents are in the process of being set depending on further responses by the States involved in the region. Thus, it is to be seen whether the sanctions, drills and posturing de-escalate through diplomatic channels or the dress rehearsal in the region culminate into dangerous conflicts.&nbsp;

Wider implication of China-Taiwan-US conundrum

United States President Joe Biden announced&nbsp;on Wednesday that the United States (US) has approved the first $900 million in funding for the construction of Electric Vehicles (EV)&nbsp;charging stations in 35 states as part of the $1 trillion infrastructure package passed in November, as per&nbsp;the White House.&nbsp;

Nearly $5 billion over five years was granted by Congress to fund grants to states for the construction of thousands of electric vehicle charging stations. In&nbsp;a speech at the Detroit auto show, Biden also revealed that the US&nbsp;government has greatly increased its purchasing of EVs.&nbsp;

Less than 1 per cent&nbsp;of new federal purchases in 2020 were electric; that number more than doubled in 2021, and in&nbsp;2022, "agencies have acquired five times as many EVs as all of last fiscal year," according to the White House.

Almost all EV or plug-in hybrid electric models must be purchased by the government by 2027, according to an executive order issued by Biden in December. The US&nbsp;government has about 650,000 vehicles and buys about 50,000 each year.&nbsp;

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) receives $3 billion in money from legislation that Biden signed in August to purchase more EVs and charging infrastructure. After previously planning to purchase at least 10,019 EVs, USPS informed Reuters in July that it is now seeking to buy at least 25,000 EVs out of its initial order of 50,000 delivery vehicles from Oshkosh.

Biden has not approved the gradual phase-out of new gasoline-powered car sales by 2030; instead, he wants 500,000 new EV charging stations and 50 per cent&nbsp;of all new vehicle sales to be electric or plug-in hybrid electric models by 2030.&nbsp;

As per&nbsp;officials, a significant barrier to broader EV adoption is the paucity of charging facilities. According to Detroit Mayor Michael Duggan, "We're going to need a see a rapid increase in electric vehicle charging."

The United States is considering options for a sanctions package against China to deter it from invading Taiwan, with the European Union coming under diplomatic pressure from Taipei to do the same, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

The sources said the deliberations in Washington and Taipei’s separate lobbying of EU envoys were both at an early stage — a response to fears of a Chinese invasion which have grown as military tensions escalate in the Taiwan Strait.

In both cases, the idea is to take sanctions beyond measures already taken in the West to restrict some trade and investment with China in sensitive technologies like computer chips and telecoms equipment.

The sources did not provide any details of what is being considered but the notion of sanctions on the world’s second-largest economy and one of the global supply chain’s biggest links raises questions of feasibility.

“The potential imposition of sanctions on China is a far more complex exercise than sanctions on Russia, given U.S. and allies’ extensive entanglement with the Chinese economy,” said Nazak Nikakhtar, a former senior U.S. Commerce Department official.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and last month fired missiles over the island and sailed warships across their unofficial sea frontier after U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in what Beijing saw as a provocation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to reunify democratically-governed Taiwan with the mainland and has not ruled out the use of force. He is set to secure a third, five-year leadership term at a Communist Party congress next month.

In Washington, officials are considering options for a possible package of sanctions against China to deter Xi from attempting to invade Taiwan, said a U.S. official and an official from a country in close coordination with Washington.

U.S. talks over sanctions began after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, but took on fresh urgency after the Chinese reaction to Pelosi’s visit, the two sources said.

The United States, backed by NATO allies, took a similar approach to Russia in January with a threat of unspecified sanctions but this failed to dissuade Russian President Vladimir Putin from launching his invasion of Ukraine.

The White House is focused on getting countries on the same page, including coordinating between Europe and Asia, and avoiding provoking Beijing, the non-U.S. official said.

The White House declined to comment.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said it had discussed China’s recent war games and the “great challenges” China poses to Taiwan and the region with the United States, Europe and other like-minded partners, but could not disclose details.

China’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

Taiwan’s pitch to Europe

Taiwan had already broached sanctions with European officials after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but China’s recent military exercises have seen Taiwan’s position harden, six sources briefed on the Taiwan-Europe discussions told Reuters.

Top Taiwanese officials’ calls for sanctions preparations have intensified in recent weeks. A recent Chinese white paper, which withdrew a promise not to send troops or administrators to Taiwan if Beijing takes control of the island, has prompted a redoubling of their efforts with Europe.

Taiwan has not asked for anything specific, only for Europe to plan what actions it may take if China attacked, one source briefed on discussions said, and has asked Europe to warn China privately that it would face consequences.

EU officials have so far shied away from imposing tough sanctions on China over human rights issues, as the country plays a far bigger role in the bloc’s economy than Russia, said another person familiar with the matter.

European sanctions would require all 27 member countries to agree, which is often elusive; the consensus was tough even in isolating Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, in part because its gas was critical for Germany.

All of Europe, excluding the Vatican, has formal diplomatic relations with Beijing but not Taipei, though Taiwanese and European officials have had extensive, private contacts since China’s military exercises began, the sources say.

Germany, the bloc’s economic engine, is “wary,” according to another official familiar with the discussion. “I don’t think the Russia-Ukraine has fundamentally changed the way they view their relationship with China.”

But there is a growing concern in the German government over its economic dependence on China, with the economy minister pledging a new trade policy and “no more naivety” on Tuesday.

United States considers imposing sanctions on China to deter Taiwan action

US health authorities published a study&nbsp;on Tuesday outlining how two previously healthy young men developed inflammation of the brain and spinal cord as a result of monkeypox, which led to the discovery of a second US death that was associated with the virus.&nbsp;

Since authorities began distributing hundreds of thousands of vaccine doses in mid-August, the number of new cases have been declining. There have been roughly 22,000 US cases in the current global outbreak, which started in May.

Los Angeles County's local health department reported the most recent fatal case was a critically immunocompromised patient who had been hospitalised, but provided no other information.

"Persons severely immunocompromised who suspect they have <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cdc-warns-over-virus-spreading-among-children-it-can-cause-muscle-weakness-paralysis-515754">monkeypox</a> are encouraged to seek medical care and treatment early and remain under the care of a provider during their illness," the department said.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/first-us-death-due-to-monkeypox-confirmed-the-person-was-severely-immunocompromised-515773">first US death associated with the virus occurred</a> in Texas on August 30, but officials stated they were still looking into the possible contribution of monkeypox due to the patient's severe immunocompromised state.

Men who have intercourse with other men are particularly affected by the current global outbreak. Through direct contact with lesions, bodily fluids, and respiratory droplets in the past, as well as occasionally through indirect contamination of surfaces like shared beds, the virus has historically been disseminated.

However, there is tentative evidence that suggests sexual transmission may possibly be a factor in this outbreak.

Brain and spinal cord inflammation

Meanwhile, a report on two unvaccinated males in their 30s who developed inflammation in their brain and spinal cord after testing positive for the virus was released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The first, case A, was a gay guy in his 30s from Colorado who developed fever, chills, and malaise before developing rashes on his face, scrotum, and extremities. Swabs taken from the lesions revealed that the virus was present in the patient.

He also experienced a persistent and painful erection, lower extremities weakness and numbness, difficulty emptying his bladder, and was hospitalised.

He was treated with the oral monkeypox antiviral tecovirimat as well as other medications, and his condition started to get better at about three months after an MRI showed inflammation in his brain and spinal cord.

At the one-month follow-up, he was still in need of an assistive walking device due to left leg weakness despite being discharged.

Patient B, a second individual, was a gay male in his 30s from the nation's capital. His fever, skin rashes, and muscle soreness worsened over time, leading to bowel and urinary incontinence as well as gradual flaccid paralysis in both legs.

On an MRI, inflammation of the brain and spinal cord was established. He was then intubated in an intensive care unit and treated with intravenous tecovirimat, a medication to control inflammation, and ultimately a blood plasma exchange.

He's still in the hospital, but he can use a device to help him walk.

"Persons severely immunocompromised who suspect they have monkeypox are encouraged to seek medical care and treatment early and remain under the care of a provider during their illness," the department said. The first US death associated with the virus occurred in Texas on August 30, but officials stated they were still looking into the possible contribution of monkeypox due to the patient's severe immunocompromised state. Also read | Can monkeypox cause neurological and psychiatric problems in some patients? Men who have intercourse with other men are particularly affected by the current global outbreak. Through direct contact with lesions, bodily fluids, and respiratory droplets in the past, as well as occasionally through indirect contamination of surfaces like shared beds, the virus has historically been disseminated. However, there is tentative evidence that suggests sexual transmission may possibly be a factor in this outbreak. Brain and spinal cord inflammation Meanwhile, a report on two unvaccinated males in their 30s who developed inflammation in their brain and spinal cord after testing positive for the virus was released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION live TV here:

Report: Second US monkeypox death as virus linked to brain inflammation

The summit this week between President Vladimir Putin of Russia and Xi Jinping of China is a show of force by two autocratic leaders united against what they consider American hegemony. It is also a moment of mutual weakness as Russia suffers losses in Ukraine and China endures an economic slowdown.

They come to the meeting, expected to take place later this week in Uzbekistan, with their own agendas and their own challenges that will test an important relationship both have described as a friendship with “no limits.”

Moscow needs Beijing. Russia’s recent routs on the battlefields of Ukraine, coupled with the broad damage inflicted by Western sanctions, have made Chinese support all the more important. China has emerged as a major buyer of Russian commodities, purchases that have helped replenish Moscow’s coffers.

Beijing, though, remains cautious. It wants to project strength in the increasingly acrimonious competition with the United States and can’t afford for its main partner in an authoritarian alliance to face a humiliating defeat. But providing substantial, additional help to Russia, either economically or militarily, risks running afoul of Western sanctions and imperiling China’s economy.

“Xi’s China has been carrying out an exquisite tightrope walk with regard to Russia,” said Rana Mitter, a professor of history and politics at Oxford University. “It is keen to show support for Russia in general, but finds active support for an invasion too politically embarrassing to contemplate and wants Moscow to resolve matters one way or another.”

Image matters for Xi as he prepares to secure a third term at a pivotal Communist Party congress in Beijing next month. His trip this week, during which he will attend a regional summit in Uzbekistan and visit Kazakhstan, marks the first time Xi has traveled abroad since the start of the pandemic and signals just how much he values the relationship. The meeting with Putin will give the Chinese leader a chance to look like a global statesman, playing well to a home audience.

Russia also provides much-needed backing for China’s agenda. When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last month in defiance of China’s claims to the self-ruled democracy, the Kremlin was quick to support Beijing’s stance, describing the trip as “provocative” and pledging “absolute solidarity with China.”

But China has tied itself to a war that has so far backfired for Russia. Any serious weakening of Putin’s dominance in Russia could hurt Beijing’s position at a time when the leadership is dealing with the political and economic fallout from its strict COVID-19 policies.

The question confronting China is whether to double down or let Russia navigate the setbacks on its own. Both strategies carry risks, and most experts expect China to choose a middle path of continued economic support without openly circumventing sanctions or providing outright military assistance.

China, which has avoided describing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a war, appears to be tempering its bets. When Xi’s second-highest-ranking deputy, Li Zhanshu, met with Putin in Russia last week, Chinese state media emphasized the two countries’ shared admiration but steered clear of overt advocacy for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency said Li has told Putin that, “political mutual trust, strategic coordination and pragmatic cooperation between the two countries have reached an unprecedented level.”

Xinhua made no mention of Ukraine, even as Russian state media claimed Beijing backed the invasion, portraying Li as having said that China “understands and supports Russia” particularly “on the situation in Ukraine.”

“China keeps avoiding military involvement in any degree in Russia’s war and will continue to do so, especially when the Russians have been in a drastic failure situation in the field,” said Shi Yinhong, a professor of international relations at Renmin University in Beijing. “China’s diplomatic and political support or sympathy will not really help them, though dramatic purchases of their energy since April help a little non-militarily.”

Putin, who describes his war as part of a battle against nefarious Western powers that threaten Russia’s very existence, appears to find China’s middle ground vexing. He suggested as much last week in describing the long-running negotiations for a new pipeline that could allow Russia to export more Siberian natural gas to China rather than Europe — a matter of critical importance to Moscow as Europe rushes to reduce energy imports from Russia.

“Our Chinese friends are tough bargainers,” Putin said at a conference in the Russian port city of Vladivostok focused on increasing economic ties with Asia. “Naturally, they proceed from their national interests in any deal, which is the only way to go.”

Putin will go into the meeting with Xi looking to China as a lifeline at perhaps Russia’s most tenuous moment since the invasion began in February. Russian forces have recently lost more than 1,000 square miles of territory in Ukraine, creating new political headwinds for Putin — even from some of his longtime supporters, now frustrated by Russia’s bumbling war effort.

At this week’s meeting, Putin hopes to close a deal for the natural gas pipeline. Russia also needs access to China’s high-tech exports and Chinese currency to pay for those goods, since Russia’s access to dollars is severely restricted.

“China has more leverage than Russia,” said Alexander Gabuev, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

As Western countries shun Moscow, it is the expanding ties with China that Putin points to most as proof that Russia cannot be isolated. It is a relationship to which Putin has devoted enormous effort, one that accelerated after relations with the West took a dive following Russia’s annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

The honor of meeting Xi in person is sure to be extolled by Russia’s state media as evidence of Putin’s continued acumen on the world stage. “Our relations have reached unprecedented heights,” Putin said at the Vladivostok conference.

The century-old relationship between the two nations is steeped in ideology and history. Moscow was crucial to the Chinese Communist Party’s founding, early survival and eventual victory in 1949 in China’s Civil War. Relatively close relations have continued, although they were interrupted by a rift in the 1960s so serious that the two countries fought border skirmishes.

Xi has a long-standing connection to Russia and Putin, whom he has met with 38 times. The Chinese leader’s father, Xi Zhongxun, a leading party figure in the 1950s, oversaw Soviet experts who came to China to help build the country’s heavy industry after the civil war, said Joseph Torigian, the author of an upcoming biography on the elder Xi.

Xi’s father visited Moscow, full of admiration. “He brought back mementos from Russia,” Torigian said, “that Xi Jinping later recalled.”

A week after he became China’s president in March 2013, Xi chose Russia for his first trip abroad and hinted in a speech there that the two countries would work together against the West.

“Currently, China and Russia are both in important periods of national revival, and bilateral relations have entered a new stage,” Xi said.

China now has the upper hand in the relationship, given its economic and military might. China’s economy was 10 times the size of Russia’s last year, before the war in Ukraine. From May through July, China bought record amounts of Russian oil at a deep discount and imported more Russian natural gas and coal.

Gazprom, the Russian gas giant, announced last week that China’s payments for gas from one pipeline would no longer be made in dollars or euros, but in Russian rubles and Chinese yuan. Such deals make it easier for Russia to bypass Western banks and buy Chinese goods that are similar to high-tech Western products under export restrictions.

While China has sold many cars and other products that do not use Western technology to Russia, it appears to have avoided the riskier activity of reselling advanced Western technology. China appears to have refrained so far this year from shipping weapons to Russia, forcing Moscow to ask Iran and North Korea for military equipment.

China’s military has a long history of training with its Russian counterparts. Last week, China sent more than 2,000 People’s Liberation Army soldiers, 21 combat aircraft and three warships to participate in joint military exercises in eastern Russia.

It was the first time that China had sent air, land and naval forces to participate in the major military exercise, which Putin personally oversaw.

But Xi is unlikely to tie his country more closely to Russia than he did in February, when he declared the limitless friendship.

“I don’t really expect any sort of new statement to be made by Xi Jinping that would be perceived as more strategic support for Russia,” said Li Mingjiang, a specialist in China’s international relations at the National University of Singapore, “nor would I expect China to walk back from what has been said.”

Donald Trump's unannounced visit to Washington DC sparks rumours

United States Vice President Kamala Harris weighed in on how the nation is being made weaker by the anti-democratic forces that have apparently emerged in the mainstream of American politics. As per Harris, such forces are also undermining the legitimacy of the country overseas. She described it as a major threat.&nbsp;

During an interview that was aired on Sunday on NBC News' "Meet the Press", Harris was asked a question related to the tragic 9/11 tragedy.&nbsp;

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.&nbsp;

The US vice president was asked whether the threats from within the United States pose a risk equal to or greater than what the nation faced 21 years ago on 9/11.&nbsp;

During the interview, Harris noted the oaths of the office she had taken as a prosecutor, California's attorney general, a senator and vice president to uphold the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic — and we don’t compare the two."&nbsp;

She said, "It is very dangerous and, I think, very harmful. And it makes us weaker."&nbsp;

She added, "I think what it sends is a signal that causes people to question, 'Hey, is America still valuing what they talk about?'. I think that through the process of what we’ve been through, we’re starting to allow people to call into question our commitment to those principles. And that's a shame."&nbsp;

United States Vice President Kamala Harris weighed in on how the nation is being made weaker by the anti-democratic forces that have apparently emerged in the mainstream of American politics. As per Harris, such forces are also undermining the legitimacy of the country overseas. She described it as a major threat. During an interview that was aired on Sunday on NBC News' "Meet the Press", Harris was asked a question related to the tragic 9/11 tragedy. On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. The US vice president was asked whether the threats from within the United States pose a risk equal to or greater than what the nation faced 21 years ago on 9/11. US VP Kamala Harris says threats from within country harming America at home and abroad: Report

Many nations and cultures hold teachers in the highest regard, with the relationship between them and their students being compared to that of God and his devotees. However, what would you do if you witness the same revered person being "creepy" toward you or your classmates?

Some people voice complaints, while others remain silent, however, some students from Rhode Island, United States, decided to do something about it and started a "pedo database".

Sixth graders at Davisville Middle School considered their teacher Aaron Thomas a "creep" after observing him leering at a few female students, calling them by nicknames, and even pushing them to dance for him. All this, while he treated the "boys with contempt, and sometimes cruelty" reports Boston Globe.

They tried talking to adults about what they witnessed, but no one took them seriously and all this while they would see the girls in their class struggle to deal with the teacher's behaviour.

The teacher reportedly even told the students that no one could do anything to him and that he had withstood the parents' complaints for almost 30 years.&nbsp;

So, the students started keeping a log of all his creepy comments, and this "pedo database" is now part of an investigation into the&nbsp;teacher.

In an interview with the Boston Globe, one of the boys talked about how he and his buddies started their "Pedo Database" in January 2021 to keep tabs on the teacher's actions and words.&nbsp;

Talking about the girls and what they were going through he said, “Sometimes they’d laugh. Sometimes they just kind of just sit there awkwardly.”&nbsp;

On January 5, 2021, the boys who were now in the seventh grade started a subchannel on discord which they named after the alleged paedophile teacher, called it a "pedo database" and started using it as a platform to keep records of "the [teacher’s] pedo moments and quotes here so we can get evidence."

The United States are looking to cut down on their dependence on China when it comes to the export of semiconductors used for artificial intelligence and according to Reuters, the White House will be announcing curbs on US companies and their shipments sometime in September.

In a letter sent to KLA Corp, Lam Research Corp and Applied Materials Inc, the Joe Biden administration asked them to stop sending chipmaking equipment to China. However, they will be allowed to send the equipment to the factories after getting a Commerce Department license.

A joint statement from Germany, France, and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/queen-elizabeth-live-updates-concerns-mount-over-the-monarchs-health-514190">Britain</a> regarding talks aimed at reviving a 2015 nuclear deal was labelled "unconstructive" and "regrettable" by Iran's foreign ministry on Saturday.

The three European parties' "unconstructive" statement is "surprising and disappointing," according to Nasser Kanani, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, given that diplomatic engagements and message exchanges are still being held in order to conclude the negotiations.

The three made the comments after expressing "severe reservations" about Iran's sincerity in its pursuit of a resurrected nuclear accord and warning that the Islamic Republic's posture was endangering the chances of achieving a deal.

"The three European countries are advised to play a more active role to provide a solution to end the few remaining disagreements instead of entering the phase of destroying the diplomatic process," Kanani said.

The three European nations who are signatories to the agreement stated on Saturday that Tehran "has chosen not to exploit this vital diplomatic opportunity," adding that "instead, Iran continues to escalate its nuclear programme much beyond any reasonable civilian purpose."

They noted that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-imposes-fresh-sanctions-on-iran-over-albanian-cyberattack-514724">Tehran</a> has also brought up again problems pertaining to its legally enforceable commitments under the Non Proliferation Treaty reached with the UN's nuclear energy watchdog IAEA.

Regarding Israel, the Islamic republic's archenemy and a steadfast opponent of the deal, Kanani said it was regretful that "the three European countries have taken a step in the route of the Zionist regime to defeat the negotiations with this ill-considered remark."

The 2015 agreement, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA, gave Iran sanctions relief in return for restricting its nuclear program.

But in 2018, then president Donald Trump withdrew the US from the deal and began reimposing biting sanctions, prompting Tehran to roll back on its commitments under the agreement.

Since April 2021, talks in Vienna have tried to revive the agreement by re-easing the sanctions against Tehran and pressuring Iran to completely uphold its promises.

The mediator of the negotiations, the European Union, presented a "final" draught of the deal last month.

Then Iran and the US each responded to the text in turn, with Washington declaring that Iran's most recent response was a "step backwards" on Friday.

A new challenge is here on TikTok, and it is not good news for car owners in the United States. A number of cars have been stolen all around the country following a dangerous challenge on the social media app that asks teenagers to steal a specific type of cars using just a USB cord.

According to the police, the main target of the challenge are 2010-2021 Kia and Hyundai cars which still use mechanical keys and not electronic systems. It makes the cars more vulnerable to theft and the challenge asks the users on the app to take advantage of that and steal it using minimal tools.

United States prosecutors said on Thursday that former president Donald Trump may not have returned all the classified documents in his possession despite FBI raiding his Mar-a-Lago residence on August 8. They said that it is possible that there are more such documents in other places owned by Trump and went on to call it a “a potential national security risk that needs investigation”.

The remarks were made in the latest filing from the Department of Justice in front of District Judge Aileen Cannon who ordered a “special master” to be appointed in order to impartially examine the documents found during the raid – a move that the DOJ has opposed from the very beginning.

The DOJ maintained their stance that Trump has removed a number of documents from the White House after his term ended and asked for permission to examine all of the 11,000 documents.

"This motion is limited to ... the seized classified records because those aspects of the order will cause the most immediate and serious harms to the government and the public," the filing stated.

In the detailed list of items found during the raid, the FBI listed 48 empty folders which were labelled “classified” and 42 which were “meant to be returned to either a staff secretary or military aide”.

While the DOJ was not certain, they hinted that more documents can be missing from the folders.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has lashed out at China to be "open and transparent" about its lunar mission, the Daily Mail reported. The US-based space agency appeared concerned over destinations on the Moon's south pole.&nbsp;

NASA told DailyMail.com, "Just as the lunar South Pole is of scientific interest to NASA, it is also of scientific interest to other nations, so overlap in potential landing regions is to be expected."&nbsp;

Recently, NASA identified 13 potential landing sites on Mood for the Artemis 3 crewed mission, which is scheduled for 2025. The landing sites were marked as NASA plans to land on the Moon's surface for the time in a half-century.&nbsp;

NASA warns China as Beijing eyes same landing sites near Moon's south pole as US

A Chinese couple has been arrested and indicted in the United States for allegedly plotting to set up an autonomous mini-state in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, said US prosecutors.&nbsp;

DOJ press release on Friday noted that Cary Yan, 50, and Gina Zhou, 34, are accused of money laundering and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.&nbsp;

It is said that Cary and Gina tried to persuade US lawmakers to set up a Semi-Autonomous Region (SAR) in the Marshall Islands. US prosecutors have alleged that the pair had posed as officers from a non-governmental organisation in New York City.&nbsp;

The US Justice Department indictment sheet reads, "The defendants offered and provided a series of bribes and other incentives to obtain the support of legislators for the bill."&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Chinese couple has&nbsp;pleaded not guilty to the charges.&nbsp;

The allegations further mentioned that in the US, Cary and Gina tried to bribe Marshall Islands officials. As per the filing, around 2016 to 2018, the NGO also held a "special consultative status" with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.&nbsp;

Starting in 2016, the Chinese couple met several officials in New York to set up a semi-autonomous region, similar to Hong Kong. They bid to create a SAR on the Rongelap Atoll, an area that was abandoned after testing of the US hydrogen bomb in the 1950s.&nbsp;

The indictment said: "Yan planned to use the Rasar to, among other things, attract investors and customers to businesses that he would operate in the Rasar, in whole or in part through the NGO."&nbsp;

When the reports emerged, a former president of the Marshall Islands asked the authorities to conduct a probe.

The Guardian reported that the couple allegedly bribed five Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) officials and was attempting to bribe a sixth. Although, the identities of the six legislators were not revealed. But Hilda Heine, who is now an MP, said that "there's some guesstimates of who the officials are."&nbsp;

As quoted by Guardian, she added: "The people deserve to know who accepted bribes and accountability measures taken as appropriate by our laws. I hope the identities will be forthcoming."&nbsp;

A video of a man threatening to crash a plane into a Walmart has gone viral after he stole it in Tupelo, Mississippi.

The Walmart and a nearby convenience store had been evacuated according to the Tupelo Police Department.

It said in a Facebook post, “Citizens are asked to avoid that area until an all clear is given. With the mobility of an aeroplane of that type the danger zone is much larger than even Tupelo."

The pilot of a small airplane, which is a nine-seater 1987 Beech C90A with two engines, has been circling the store in the air for more than three hours.
