Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, has declared a state of emergency in response to a "crisis situation" brought on by an inflow of migrants.

Since April, more than 17,000 people have entered the city from the southern border.

Recent months have seen a migration of people from Republican states like Texas, Arizona, and Florida to Democratic regions.

As record numbers of individuals cross into the US from Mexico, there has been a dispute with the White House about it.

At a press conference on Friday, Adams stated that since September, an average of five to six buses have been arriving in the city each day. According to him, one out of every five residents of the city's shelter system is currently looking for refuge.

The mayor is requesting federal and state assistance to help with the bills because the surge is expected to cost New York $1 billion (£900 million) this fiscal year, as reported by BBC.

"New Yorkers are angry," said Mayor Adams. "I am angry too. We have not asked for this. There was never any agreement to take on the job of supporting thousands of asylum seekers."

He added: "The city is going to run out of funding for other priorities. New York City is doing all we can, but we are reaching the outer limit of our ability to help."

He continued, "Others are exploiting the city's social services for political benefit."

The gun-owners’ rights groups in the United States were handed a major victory as a federal judge blocked parts of the new gun law in New York. The decision will allow an advocacy group called the Gun Owners of America to challenge the law which regulates the carry of concealed weapons.

According to the law which came into effect on September 1, carrying guns in a number of public and private places in the city will be considered a criminal offence even for individuals who have licenses. It also advocated for better background checks when it comes to selling any weapon.

The decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) to reduce oil output, according to President Biden, has left the government searching for "alternatives."

When asked if the United States would contemplate turning to the oil-rich country Venezuela, he told reporters, "There's a lot of alternatives. We are still debating our options."

A day after OPEC+ said it will reduce oil output by 2 million barrels per day, the president made the remarks.

However, it also implies that when storage levels drop, petrol prices will probably increase.

According to reports published Wednesday night, the Biden administration was considering easing Venezuelan sanctions so that American oil corporations might restart production there.

United States President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the world is currently facing a major threat of “nuclear Armageddon” and it is currently at its worst since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

The observation came days after Russia confirmed that they can use nuclear weapons in their ongoing invasion of Ukraine. With Ukraine reclaiming some regions after eight months of war, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that they can use nuclear weapons to claim victory.

Following a NASA launch on Wednesday, a US astronaut has become the first Native American woman in space.

One of the four astronauts that took off from Florida at noon on their way to the International Space Station is Marine Colonel Nicole Mann, a 45-year-old (ISS). They were sent on a course to catch the orbiting outpost in around 29 hours by the SpaceX Falcon rocket.

Col. Mann expressed to the BBC her hope that the mission will serve as an example for future Native American generations. Young Native American youngsters will be inspired, in her words, "to follow their dreams and realise that some of those barriers that are there or used to be there are being broken down."

Col. Mann, a US Marine Corps pilot with a Wailacki Indian Tribe registration, has a wealth of expertise flying a variety of aircraft. She has been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan and has received six medals for her service.

Tribes have long complained of social prejudice that causes them to struggle economically and underfund their schools. The US National Centre for Education Statistics reports that in 2017, just 27 per cent of Native Americans received an associate's degree or above, compared to 54 per cent of white students.

Col. Mann estimated that the team will conduct roughly 250 scientific experiments while on board the ISS. These involve planting tomatoes, aiding in the 3D printing of human cells, and perhaps going on space missions.

Col. Mann told the BBC that she intended to carry a memento of her family's Native American ancestry despite being only permitted to bring a small number of personal belongings, such as her wedding ring and pictures.

US vice president Kamala Harris was involved in a car accident on Monday that the Secret Service incorrectly labelled as a "mechanical failure."

The vice president was shifted to another car after her motorcade hit a curb on the route to the White House, according to a report published on Wednesday by The Washington Post.

Director of the Secret Service Kim Cheatle voiced worry that the incident had been "mischaracterised" as a "mechanical breakdown," according to the report.

Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi claimed in a statement to USA Today on Wednesday that one of the motorcade's vehicles "had a little overcorrection and clipped a curb."

The vehicle's occupant, Harris, was moved to another vehicle and driven to the White House, as reported by the Independent.

“Initial radio traffic indicated this was a mechanical failure and that was communicated to agency leadership by personnel supporting the motorcade movement,” Guglielmi said.

“After the protective movement was completed, leadership was verbally updated with additional pertinent facts that the vehicle struck a curb.”

US: Secret Service allegedly covered up a car accident involving VP Kamala Harris

The United States is stockpiling medications for radiation sickness, which might be a worrying sign of the times.

On Wednesday, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it would spend $290 million to secure an undisclosed quantity of Amgen's blood disorder drug Nplate, which has been approved to treat blood cell injuries caused by acute radiation syndrome (ARS) in both children and adults.

In a release, HHS stated that ARS, also known as radiation sickness, happens when a person's body is exposed to a high dosage of penetrating radiation that is capable of "hitting interior organs in a matter of seconds." Low platelet counts, which can cause uncontrolled and potentially "life-threatening" blood clotting issues, are symptoms that can result from ARS injuries.

Other than immune thrombocytopenia, which results in low platelet counts, the Amgen medication is licensed for use in children and adults.

Additionally, anti-radiation tablets are apparently being distributed in Ukraine amid rising concerns about a nuclear attack from Russia.

According to NBC News, the Kyiv City Council has been distributing potassium iodine tablets that aid in reducing radiation absorption.

When taken near to nuclear radiation exposure, the pills prevent damaging waves from entering the body through the thyroid gland.

HHS did not elaborate on the reasoning behind the Nplate stock-up, despite the fact that the action coincides with rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has threatened nuclear reprisal and portrayed the dispute as an apocalyptic war between Russia and the West.

Although there is disagreement among experts as to whether Putin is lying, Reuters reported that the White House is taking the warnings seriously. As a result of shelling near the Ukrainian nuclear power facility in Zaporizhzhia, for which Russia and Ukraine trade accusations, neighbouring nations to Ukraine, including Poland, are apparently giving iodine tablets.

The US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), more recently recognised for its substantial agreements with vaccine players at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the West Coast biotech Amgen jointly developed Nplate. Former United States President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the raid conducted by the FBI has generated “about $5 billion worth of free publicity” for his Mar-a-Lago residence.

The authorities found around 100 classified documents dating back to Trump’s tenure as president at the Florida residence. The raid was conducted after witnesses confirmed that the residence contained proof of “obstruction of justice”, the Department of Justice said in an affidavit.

However, Trump dismissed all allegations brought against him and said that the FBI and other authorities are trying to attack him politically ahead of the US mid-term elections.

“Has anyone heard about the document hoax? Helicopters flying over Mar-a-Lago,” Trump said at a Hispanic Leadership Conference in Miami arranged by the America First Policy Institute.

Trump had earlier accused the FBI of planting evidence against him at the Mar-a-Lago residence but his legal team denied to add it officially to their argument.

The Onion, a satirical journal, has requested that the US Supreme Court take up a matter involving the freedom to parody in a very serious legal filing. And the filing does what the Onion does best, serving up a heaping helping of complete nonsense, in order to make a serious legal point.

The document refers to The Onion as "the single most powerful and influential organization in human history," with a claimed global viewership of 4.3 trillion. It provides 350,000 jobs at its offices and "manual labour camps," "owns and operates the majority of the world’s transoceanic shipping lanes, stands on the nation’s leading edge on matters of deforestation and strip mining, and proudly conducts tests on millions of animals daily”.

Why does the Onion feel the need to comment on a routine court matter when it has such influence? The lawsuit states that it is being made "to protect its continued ability to create fiction that may ultimately merge into reality." The writers of The Onion are likewise motivated by self-interest to stop political authorities from jailing humorists. In an effort to at least lessen their potential penalty in the future, this brief is presented.

Its headline, "Ohio Police Officers Arrest, Prosecute Man Who Made Fun of Them on Facebook," expresses anxiety about the result of the case. The filing notes that although it seems like a headline from The Onion, it is not.

According to the filing, parody has a rich history and serves a societal purpose when it "adopts a particular form in order to critique it from within." The Onion uses one of its most famous headlines, “Supreme court rules supreme court rules,” as an example.

The paper offers a unique look beyond the comedy veil by explaining how jokes function while also acting more like a conventional legal document by citing pertinent court judgments and using phrases like "dispositive."

The South Korean and the United States military fired four missiles into the sea in response to North Korea’s intermediate-range ballistic missile tests on Tuesday. “South Korean and American troops staged a missile drill of their own in response”, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Both nations fired a pair of US-made ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles, he added. South Korea also fired a Hyunmoo-2 missile but the test failed right after the launch. This was the second test drill by both the countries in 24 hours after a joint exercise on the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula.

John Kirby, the National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications, told CNN that the tests carried out by the US and the South Korean military on Wednesday was aimed at showing “the military capabilities at the ready to respond to provocations by the North.”

“This is not the first time we’ve done this in response to provocations by the North to make sure that we can demonstrate our own capabilities,” Kirby said.

“We want to see the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, (North Korean leader Kim Jong Un) hasn’t shown an inclination to move in that direction, quite frankly he’s moving in the opposite direction by continuing to conduct these missile tests which are violations of security council resolutions,” he added.

Earlier, North Korea decided to test a number of missiles without any prior warning.

It was Pyongyang's longest-range test yet as they flew over Japan prompting criticism and evacuation orders from Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Kishida condemned North Korea's test in the "strongest terms” while the Union Nations and the European Union also followed suit.

According to a poll conducted by the nonpartisan Eurasia Group Foundation last month, more than three-quarters of Americans believe that the United States should seek diplomacy to stop Iran from gaining or producing a nuclear weapon.

Between September 2 and September 8, 2,002 American adults were questioned on American foreign policy and the country's place in the world. It was discovered that 78.8 per cent of respondents, up from last year, believe Washington should keep up the negotiations to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon soon.

After being notified that the United States withdrew from the initial pact in 2018, the study revealed that 88% of Democrats, 76.9 per cent of independents, and 71.8 per cent of Republicans supported such discussions.

When asked about the nuclear agreement last year, 62.6 per cent of respondents agreed that Washington should restart nuclear discussions.

According to the survey, which was published on Wednesday, "More than 70 per cent of Republicans believe the U.S. should continue to pursue nuclear negotiations with Iran, suggesting elected leaders and candidates who vocally criticise the negotiations might be out of step with many of their voters."

As the use of automation in sectors like education, healthcare, and employment witnesses an increase, the White House on Tuesday proposed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bill of Rights.

In response to Iran's brutal crackdown on protests spurred by Mahsa Amini's death, the United States would impose "further costs," President Joe Biden said, prompting Iran to call the United States "hypocritical" on Tuesday.

Amini, 22, was declared dead on September 16, just a few days after the infamous morality police had jailed the Iranian Kurd for allegedly breaking the law mandating women to dress modestly and wear hijabs.

The greatest wave of protests to hit Iran in three years, as well as a response by the authorities that resulted in hundreds of protestors being killed and more than 1,000 being detained, were spurred by outrage over her death.

In a statement, Biden stated that "this week, the United States will be imposing further costs on perpetrators of violence against peaceful protesters. We will continue holding Iranian officials accountable and supporting the rights of Iranians to protest freely."

Biden expressed "grave concern" about reports of the escalating crackdown on protestors and asserted that Washington supported "all the citizens of Iran who are inspiring the world with their bravery."

Following the use of tear gas and paintball guns by Iranian riot police against hundreds of students shouting "woman, life, liberty" on Sunday night at Tehran's Sharif University of Technology, rights organisations expressed grave concern. Video footage also showed detainees being taken away with fabric hoods covering their heads.

The US president made no mention of any potential penalties against Iran, which is currently the target of punishing US economic measures partly because of its contentious nuclear programme.

Iran called the US president's use of human rights as justification for further punitive measures "hypocritical."

Diplomatic efforts to resurrect a 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and foreign nations have been overshadowed by the turmoil after they came near to success in recent months before stalling once more.

We will continue holding Iranian officials accountable and supporting the rights of Iranians to protest freely." Biden expressed "grave concern" about reports of the escalating crackdown on protestors and asserted that Washington supported "all the citizens of Iran who are inspiring the world with their bravery." Following the use of tear gas and paintball guns by Iranian riot police against hundreds of students shouting "woman, life, liberty" on Sunday night at Tehran's Sharif University of Technology, rights organisations expressed grave concern. Video footage also showed detainees being taken away with fabric hoods covering their heads. The US president made no mention of any potential penalties against Iran, which is currently the target of punishing US economic measures partly because of its contentious nuclear programme. Iran called the US president's use of human rights as justification for further punitive measures "hypocritical." Also Read: North Korea conducts longest-range missile test yet over Japan Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the top leader of Iran, had Monday accused his country's bitter enemies Israel and the United States of inciting the demonstrations. With the aid of certain treacherous Iranians overseas, the riots "were engineered by America and the occupying, false Zionist regime, as well as their paid agents," Khomeini said. Diplomatic efforts to resurrect a 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and foreign nations have been overshadowed by the turmoil after they came near to success in recent months before stalling once more. In a prisoner swap, seven Americans and two Venezuelans released

he US suicide rate rose in 2021, particularly among young men, according to official data out Friday -- an increase that ends a two-year-decline.

The number of suicides rose from around 46,000 in 2020 to 47,650 in 2021, according to preliminary figures released by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The age-adjusted suicide rate per 100,000 people grew from 13.5 in 2020 to 14 last year. The most significant increase was seen among young boys and men between the ages of 15 and 24, where the rate rose eight percent.

In 2000, after a decade of decline, the United States recorded a recent low of 10 deaths by suicide per 100,000 people.

"One of the things that may have contributed to the decrease in the 1990s was the advent of medications that help reduce risk for suicide," Jill Harkavy-Friedman of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, told AFP.

The rate then started growing -- potentially because of new warning labels attached to antidepressants, according to Harkavy-Friedman -- until by 2018 it was 35 percent over 2000 levels.

Then, it fell five percent from 2018 until 2020.

According to Harkavy-Friedman, the recent fluctuations are difficult to interpret.

"We don't really know yet what the full implications of this kind of rise are," she said, adding it was necessary to look at patterns over the long term.

The role of the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular, is complex.

According to the AFSP, research has shown that "people tend to come together during traumatic events initially and this can serve as a protective factor against suicide, though this societal cohesion may not persist as time passes."

Data from 2021 shows that the suicide rate for men is four times higher than for women, which is in line with past trends.

Among the reasons put forward include the idea that men are more likely to use lethal means, and have more difficulty in seeking mental help.

This preliminary data does not yet provide a breakdown by ethnicity or income of the deceased.

According to the CDC, suicides are the second leading cause of death among those aged 10-34.

Recently, the United States introduced a simpler three-digit helpline (988) for people in distress, replacing the previous 10-digit number.

"We're very happy about 988, which is the new mental health crisis line, and the accompanying crisis services that goes with it, because this is going to bring options to people who feel so desperate and in such pain," said Harkavy-Friedman.
