The use of race in admissions decisions to some of America's finest universities is another contentious and sensitive issue the US Supreme Court will address on Monday, following verdicts on abortion and guns in the recent past.

And the conservative-dominated court might be prepared to reverse course once more, just as it did in June when it invalidated the famous "Roe v. Wade" ruling from 1973 that protected a woman's right to an abortion.

The use of race in admissions to Harvard and the University of North Carolina (UNC), the nation's oldest private and public universities, respectively, will be the subject of two hours of oral arguments before the court.

Like many other selective universities, Harvard and UNC employ race as a criterion to try to ensure that minorities, particularly African Americans, are represented in the student body.

According to Yasmin Cader, deputy legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union, the "affirmative action" policy was born out of the Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s to "help address our country's long history of discrimination and systemic inequality in higher education" (ACLU).

Right-wing critics have attacked it since the beginning, and several white students have filed lawsuits over the years, alleging "reverse discrimination."

Affirmative action is prohibited at public institutions in nine states, including California, where voters rejected a 2020 attempt to reinstate the practice after doing so in a ballot measure in 1996.

Affirmative action has already been affirmed by the Supreme Court, most recently in 2016 by a single vote, but its opponents think the current right-leaning panel will give their arguments more consideration.

President Joe Biden made yet another gaffe by saying that there are “54 states” in the United States.

He made the remarks while speaking at a rally in Philadelphia on Friday as he was seeking support for embattled Democrat John Fetterman in the midterm elections.

Biden was speaking about how his administration improved healthcare when he erroneously said that “we went to 54 states” to stop pharmaceutical companies from driving up drug prices.

“And, by the way, if they do, that means — not a joke, everybody; that’s why we defeated it in 2018 when they tried to do it. We went to 54 states,” Biden said.

“The reason is people didn’t realise that the only reason anybody who has a pre-existing condition can get healthcare is because of that Affordable Care Act.”

Poland's first nuclear power station will be built by United States company Westinghouse Electric Co, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Friday, confirming a long-awaited decision to cut the nation's carbon emissions and phase out coal.

Poland's selection of a partner from the United States highlights the importance Warsaw places on relations with Washington at a time when its security is in the focus as Russia is waging war in neighbouring Ukraine.

"We confirm our nuclear energy project will use the reliable, safe technology of @WECNuclear," Morawiecki said on Twitter.

State-owned Korea Hydro Nuclear Power of South Korea, which filed an offer in April, was Westinghouse's rival. Additionally, Warsaw was discussing the project with French businesses.

"U.S. partnership on this project is advantageous for us all: we can address the climate crisis, strengthen European energy security, and deepen the U.S.-Poland strategic relationship," Vice President Kamala Harris said in a tweet.

Together with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Harris attempted to assist Westinghouse in obtaining the deal, speaking with Morawiecki multiple times during the previous year, a White House official said. The United States is backing Ukraine, a nation pushing hard to become a NATO member, against Russia in the ongoing war that caused massive food and fuel crises globally. The US is providing Ukraine with advanced military weapons and aid to fight Russia, but its attention is also diverted to the simmering tensions in the Taiwan strait and Korean Peninsula. The US military said in a strategy document released on Thursday (October 27) that China is apparently the "most consequential" challenge for Washington, but Russia presents "acute threats". China-Taiwan tensions The document says that Chinese actions may act as a destabilising factor and threaten peace in the Indo-Pacific region. China claims self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and tensions recently flared up between Beijing and Washington. China claimed that, in case needed, it will use force to unite the two territories. The document further emphasised the need for collaboration with allied countries and other partners to counter the dangers posed by China and Russia. The US claims that such cooperation is "foundational for US national security interests." It said, "The most comprehensive and serious challenge to US national security is (China's) coercive and increasingly aggressive endeavor to refashion the Indo-Pacific region and the international system to suit its interests and authoritarian preferences." The Pentagon also said that it will advance its Major Defense Partnership with India to "enhance its (India's) ability to deter People's Republic of China (PRC) aggression and ensure free and open access to the Indian Ocean Region." The Department (of Defense) will support robust deterrence of Russian aggression against vital US national interests, including our treaty Allies." Amid the ongoing Ukraine war, fears of nuclear weapon use are rising. The strategy document noted that the US intends for its nuclear arsenal to deter "all forms of strategic attack," including those involving conventional weapons. A senior defence official told journalists that "this includes nuclear employment of any scale, and it includes high-consequence attacks of a strategic nature that use non-nuclear means." Tesla Inc. is the subject of a criminal investigation in the United States for making claims that its electric cars can drive themselves, reports Reuters.

Following more than a dozen mishaps, some of which were deadly, involving Tesla's driving assistance system Autopilot, which was turned on during the accidents, the US Department of Justice opened the previously unreported investigation last year, the people said.

Tesla's marketing brochures began praising Autopilot's capabilities as early as 2016. Elon Musk, the CEO of the Silicon Valley automaker, said in a conference call that year that it was "probably better" than a human driver.

Musk stated on a different call last week that Tesla would soon release an updated version of its "Full Self-Driving" software that would enable users to travel "to your work, your friend's house, or to the grocery store without you touching the wheel."

The person in the driver's seat is merely there for legal reasons, according to a video that is now available on the corporate website. He is not acting in any way. The vehicle is self-driving.

But the company has also made it clear that while using Autopilot, drivers must maintain control of their cars by keeping their hands on the wheel.

According to the company's website, the Tesla technology is intended to help with steering, braking, speed, and lane changes but its functions "do not make the vehicle autonomous."

The claims made about Autopilot's capabilities and the system's design are already being closely examined by federal and California safety regulators to see if they give customers a false sense of security, leading them to treat Teslas as truly driverless cars and grow complacent behind the wheel with potentially fatal results.

Due to the potential for criminal charges to be brought against the business or specific individuals, the Justice Department probe may constitute a more intense degree of scrutiny, according to the people familiar with the investigation.

The eight-month-old Russia-Ukraine war raised concerns that a nuclear weapon could be deployed that would lead to massive destruction. In the past couple of months, the issue has been raised by world leaders, who are urging Moscow and Kyiv to end the conflict peacefully.

In a recent report, US-based media outlet POLITICO cited United States diplomatic cable and two people familiar with the issue who said that the nation is apparently speeding up its plan to store a more accurate version of its mainstay nuclear weapons at NATO bases in Europe.

The cable revealed that the US officials informed NATO allies this month that the arrival of the upgraded B61-12 air-dropped gravity bomb, which was originally scheduled for next spring, is now planned for this December, the report added.

As quoted by POLITICO, Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said via an email, "While we aren't going to discuss details of our nuclear arsenal, modernisation of US B61 nuclear weapons has been underway for years and plans to safely and responsibly swap out older weapons for the upgraded B61-12 versions is part of a long-planned and scheduled modernisation effort. It is in no way linked to current events in Ukraine and was not sped up in any way."

Social media platform TikTok has been in the middle of a lot of controversies due to allegations of data breaches and the involvement of the Chinese government in tracking user data. However, a new survey shows that it has not changed its popularity in the United States – especially among the youth.

The survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found that around one-third of TikTok users get their consumption of news from the platform. Most of these users were aged under 30 years but the percentage of users between 30-49 years who get their news from TikTok has grown quite a bit.

It currently stands at 10 per cent – a huge rise from 2 per cent in 2020. The growth can also be seen in people in the age group of 50-64 years where the number has gone up by three per cent.

It is a surprising trend for a social media platform that is well-known for dance videos and generally light-hearted user-generated content. However, with young people in the US spending a lot of time online, it has turned into an educational source for them when it comes to news.

In the United States, early voting began on Monday (October 24) with people voting in the midterm elections. In his recent meeting with six young "change-makers", President Joe Biden stressed the need for voter turnout.

In the meeting, they talked about several issues dominating the election such as abortion access, trans rights, criminal justice reform, gun safety, economic instability and climate injustice.

Targeting the opposition on abortion, Biden said the Senators on the Republican side have made it clear what they want to do. He noted that Senator Lindsay Graham of South Carolina "wants to federally pass a law that they'd expect the President to sign that would in fact outlaw the right to choose in most cases, no matter whether it's incest or rape or any criminal act".

But Biden also mentioned, that if Republicans succeed in blocking abortion in every state, then he is going to veto it. "It's not going to happen as long as I'm President," he said.

The US president told activists Monday at his party headquarters in Washington: "We just have 15 days until one of the most important elections in our lifetime. And it's going to shape the way the country looks... for the coming decade." He predicted a late surge.

The United States has decided to strengthen its position in Asia as US Air Force B-1B bombers landed in Guam. According to the White House, the decision to send the long-range aircraft was taken due to the ongoing tension in Taiwan and North Korea said to be planning nuclear tests.

"It is ... meant to send a message that the United States stands closely with its allies and partners to deter potential provocation," Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder told reporters.

The newly unveiled strategy prioritises "out-competing China and constraining Russia". Calling to re-examine ties with key oil producer Saudi Arabia, the Democrats, as per the Guardian, even issued a fresh ultimatum to the Kingdom, giving it weeks to reverse the decision to reduce oil production, and even threatened it with a potential one-year freeze on all arms sales.

US President Joe Biden believes he can once again beat his predecessor Donald Trump in a possible 2024 rematch, as both politicians seek a second term at the top.

"I believe I can beat Donald Trump again," he said during an interview with CNN. He was asked whether he was going to seek four more years in office and about his future prospects in the tussle with the Republican leader.

Recent polls reportedly show that a majority of Democrats do not want Biden to run for re-election.

“It’s a matter of, can you do the job? And I believe I can do the job. I’ve been able to do the job,” he added.

The US President will soon be turning 80. “They’re concerned about whether or not I can get anything done. Look what I’ve gotten done. Name me a president in recent history that’s gotten as much done as I have in the first two years. Not a joke. You may not like what I got done, but the vast majority of the American people do like what I got done,” he told CNN. “It’s a matter of, can you do the job? And I believe I can do the job. I’ve been able to do the job,” he added. Asked about the upcoming G20 meeting in Indonesia next month and the prospect of talks with the Russian president, Biden said it would depend on what Putin wanted to talk about. “But look, he’s acted brutally...I think he’s committed war crimes. In the United States, Democratic senator Bob Menendez on Monday urged the government to stop all cooperation with Saudi Arabia. Last week, a group of oil producers known as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) rebuffed the US by announcing steep production cuts.

Menendez said in a statement that the weapons sales and security cooperation with Saudi Arabia should be halted over the kingdom's decision to underwrite Russia's war in Ukraine by slashing oil production.
