Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr left for his four-day official visit to the United States on Sunday (April 30), where he is set to meet his US counterpart, President Joe Biden on Monday.

Before leaving for Washington, Marcos said that he would express his determination to President Biden to form an 'even stronger relationship' with the United States to address the 'concerns of our times', which also include the issues related to the economy.

He further explained that his meeting with his US counterpart held extreme significance in forging ahead his country's national interest and strengthening the 'very important alliance' between Manila and Washington.

"During this visit, we will reaffirm our commitment to fostering our long-standing alliance as an instrument of peace and as a catalyst of development in the Asia Pacific region, and for that matter for the rest of the world," said Marcos, the son of the late strongman,&nbsp;Ferdinand Marcos, whom Washington helped escape into exile in Hawaii during a 1986 'people power' insurgency.

President Marcos' official visit to Washington is the first trip by a Philippine leader in more than a decade and the newest in a series of high-level meetings carried out by the Philippines with leaders of the United States and China.

As per a Reuters report, a senior Biden administration official said that both leaders are expected to reach agreements on greater business engagement, as well as 'military enhancements' amidst shared concerns about China.

The official further said that the strategic importance of the Philippines could not be underestimated, highlighting the fact that the relationship the United States had with the Philippines was beyond just security. &nbsp;He said that in an aim to bolster commercial ties, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo would lead a presidential business delegation to the Philippines.

"We're seeking not to be provocative, but to provide both moral and practical support for the Philippines as they try to make their way in a complex Western Pacific," the official said. "Their geographic position is critical," he added.

Philippine president travels to United States to forge stronger ties amid tensions with China

South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol, on Friday, said that Seoul was taking into consideration the options of supplying lethal aid to Kyiv and that it was necessary to make sure that Russia's invasion of Ukraine never happens.

In a speech at Harvard University's Kennedy School on the fifth day of a state visit to mark the 70th anniversary of the US-South Korean alliance, Yoon said the Russian offensive was a violation of international law and the rights of Ukrainians.

"We should prove that such attempts will never reach success, to block further attempts being made in the future," he said, as per the concurrent translations of his remarks.&nbsp;

On being asked about the possibility of providing lethal aid to Ukraine, the South Korean leader said, "We are closely monitoring the situation that’s going on the battlefield in Ukraine and will take proper measures in order to uphold the international norms and international law. Right now we are closely monitoring the situation and we are considering various options."

President Yoon met his United States counterpart Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Amidst soaring tensions over Pyongyang's growing arsenal of projectiles and explosives, the United States vowed to provide South Korea with more insight into its nuclear planning over any conflict with North Korea, signing the Washington Declaration in the process.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>'South Korea might extend its support for Ukraine beyond humanitarian aid': Yoon</h2>

Yoon, in an interview with Reuters before leaving for the United States, had highlighted that Seoul might extend its support for Ukraine beyond humanitarian and economic aid if it comes under a large-scale civilian attack.

"If there is a situation the international community cannot condone, such as any large-scale attack on civilians, massacre or serious violation of the laws of war, it might be difficult for us to insist only on humanitarian or financial support," he said. &nbsp;

The United States' first coordinated efforts to evacuate its private citizens from Sudan took place on Friday when a convoy of buses carrying approximately 300 Americans departed the war-torn capital of Khartoum and began a 525-mile journey&nbsp;to the Red Sea.

Armed American drones flew high above the convoy, keeping a close eye out for potential threats. After securing security guarantees from the enemies, the United Nations and numerous other countries have also evacuated their citizens overland, reported The New York Times.&nbsp;

It raised new concerns about why the United States had taken so long to plan a civilian evacuation from Sudan, which was home to approximately 16,000 Americans, many of whom were dual nationals, when Western and Persian Gulf allies had moved faster and evacuated many&nbsp;more people.

Starting&nbsp;Tuesday, Britain has evacuated 1,573 people, the majority of whom are British citizens, from an airfield north of Khartoum. Another 1,700 people were airlifted out of harm's way by Germany and France. According to Saudi authorities, at least 3,000 more people from various nations were evacuated by boat from Port Sudan to Jeddah.

Other nations are already reducing their evacuation efforts as the U.S. steps up its own.&nbsp;Due to a "significant decline" in demand for seats, Britain announced on Friday that it would stop operating its airlift at 6 pm&nbsp;on Saturday.

The disparity could be a result of the American government taking a more cautious approach to airlifting civilians out of an unpredictably chaotic conflict zone with no clearly defined front lines. This concern appeared to be partially justified on Friday when Turkey reported that one of its military aircraft had come under fire as it landed at the airfield on the edge of Khartoum.

Other Americans have made it to the&nbsp;border on their own by road, crossing into Egypt and Ethiopia, joining tens of thousands of Sudanese who have made the same journey. The United States has assisted American citizens in getting seats on flights out of Khartoum organised by allied nations, and occasionally on convoys going through Khartoum to the airfield.

US begins evacuation of American citizens from war-torn Sudan

The US House of Representatives passed a bill, narrowly at it, to raise the government's debt limit. &nbsp;

The bill, passed on Wednesday by a 217-215 vote, proposes to increase the borrowing limit by $1.5 trillion or until March 31, 2024, whichever comes first.

The bill will now reach the US Senate, where it is expected to face serious pushback from the Democrats, who hold a slight majority over the Republicans. &nbsp;

The Democrats aren't happy with the latest version of the bill as they want the debt limit to rise without any cut in welfare spending. &nbsp;

The bill approved by the House of Representatives will also reduce spending to 2022 levels, cap annual growth at one per cent, eliminate renewable energy tax breaks and tighten work requirements for anti-poverty programmes.

While Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, seeks talks with President Joe Biden for the bill's smooth passage, the latter is likely to use his veto power to reject the proposal. &nbsp;

That would, however, not be good news for the United States as the Treasury Department may run out of methods to pay its obligations and will begin defaulting between July and September, as per various estimates. &nbsp;

What's a debt limit?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Keeping politics aside, debt limit or debt ceiling is a concept of fiscal discipline. However, the frequent changes to the limit, especially in the last decade, also puts a question mark on the concept itself. &nbsp;

The Treasury Department defines its debt limit as "the total amount of money that the United States government is authorised to borrow to meet its existing legal obligations."

The "legal obligations" referred to by the department include funding for Social Security and Medicare benefits, military salaries, interest on the national debt, tax refunds, and other payments.

While the debt limit is tied to the total national debt of the United States, it has a complicated relationship with the US budgeting process. &nbsp;

Technically speaking, the debt limit is a strict reminder about paying up the past obligations of the government. However, the US federal spending –&nbsp; future expenditure – has a separate legislative process, which has little to do with the debt limit. &nbsp;

However, lawmakers cutting across party lines in the US have sought major cuts in federal spending while negotiating for a suspension or raise in the debt limit. &nbsp;

The current debt ceiling is $31.4 trillion, which the United States hit in January. The country will default on its payments once the Treasury Department runs out of "extraordinary measures" to fund its obligations. &nbsp;

Strictly speaking, the United States has hit the debt ceiling several times in the past too. Yet, it has never defaulted on its payments as Congress ultimately increases or temporarily suspends the debt limit, allowing the government to borrow more. &nbsp;

What if the US defaults?

But the US defaulting on its debt may have unprecedented consequences. &nbsp;

This is what the Treasury Department has to say about such a scenario: "The scope of the negative repercussions related to a default are unknown but would likely have catastrophic repercussions in the United States and in markets across the globe."

One great possibility arising from a debt default is the downgrade in the credit ratings of US sovereign debt.&nbsp;

In August 2011, while the country avoided defaulting by raising the debt limit, credit rating agency Standard &amp; Poor reduced the United States'&nbsp;rating from AAA (outstanding) to AA+ (excellent). &nbsp;

Any downgrade in credit ratings sends negative signals about economic health and raises concerns regarding a country's ability to repay its debts. &nbsp;

More recently, Goldman Sachs economists estimated that a debt ceiling breach would immediately halt about one-tenth of US economic activity.

The history of debt limits

The concept of a debt ceiling or limit dates back to the early 20th Century, to be precise to 1917 when the US entered the first world war. &nbsp;

Until then, the US was an isolationist in international affairs and needed funds to bolster its war efforts. Consequently, Congress legislated the Second Liberty Bond Act in 1917, which sought public funds through bonds and also created the debt ceiling. &nbsp;

However, it was only in 1939 and 1941, amid the second world war, that the debt ceiling, as we know it today, was substantially established. The Public Debt Acts of 1939 and 1941 put an aggregate limit to nearly all federal debt.

Since 1960, the US Congress has raised or temporarily suspended the debt limit at least 78 times -- 49 times under a Republican administration and 29 times while Democrats have been in power.

The US debt limit has risen dramatically in the last decade, owing to the fallout of the 2007-08 financial crisis and the consequent global recession. &nbsp;

Since 2010, the debt limit has risen by over $17 trillion, from $14.2 trillion in February 2010 to $31.4 trillion in December 2021. &nbsp;

Given the ballooning debt burden, many analysts feel that the concept of debt limit has failed. Some have even suggested that the US must do away with the debt limit, calling it "harmful" to the US economy. &nbsp;

Roger Ferguson, a senior fellow at the Centre for Foreign Relations, argues that the US Congress should eliminate the debt ceiling completely or at least tie it to federal spending. &nbsp;

"It is time for the United States to leave behind this antiquated mechanism that brings the country to the precipice of default every few years," the US think tank quoted him as saying. &nbsp;

US House passes bill to revise ''debt ceiling'': Decoding the controversial term

Senior Biden administration officials revealed on&nbsp;Thursday that the United States will build regional processing centres for migrants in Colombia and Guatemala in a move to curb arrivals at the southern border once a pandemic-era provision expires next month.

According to officials on a conference call with reporters, the government is also in talks with more Latin American countries and may announce new processing centres in the coming weeks. Migrants will be screened at the centres for eligibility under the US&nbsp;Refugee Admissions Programme and other humanitarian and labour avenues.

As per the&nbsp;Biden administration officials, Spain and Canada will accept recommendations from the regional centres.

“Migration affects every country in the region,” a senior official told Los Angeles Times.&nbsp;“No one country can provide solutions for millions of displaced people on its own.”

The announcement comes two weeks before the scheduled expiration of Title 42 orders, which were put in place during the COVID-19 outbreak and banned migrants from obtaining asylum, allowing border officers to quickly return many of them to Mexico.

When Title 42 orders are lifted on May 11, immigration officers will resume processing persons under the long-established jurisdiction of Title 8. Deportations under Title 8 have harsher penalties, including possible criminal prosecution and a five-year ban on readmission.

According to an official, the Department of Homeland Security would significantly boost the use of expedited removal to process migrants' petitions for relief within days. US Customs and Border Protection has built phone booths and peaceful locations to border facilities to facilitate attorney calls and asylum interviews.

The administration will increase the number of available appointments through the CBP One mobile&nbsp;application. As per&nbsp;the official, it would also launch a family reunion programme for persons from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, as well as include Colombians, as well as update existing reunification programmes for those from Cuba and Haiti.

For the past year, officials at the Department of Homeland Security have been preparing to phase out Title 42 orders.

As per the Biden administration officials, Spain and Canada will accept recommendations from the regional centres. “Migration affects every country in the region,” a senior official told Los Angeles Times. “No one country can provide solutions for millions of displaced people on its own.” The announcement comes two weeks before the scheduled expiration of Title 42 orders, which were put in place during the COVID-19 outbreak and banned migrants from obtaining asylum, allowing border officers to quickly return many of them to Mexico. New construction was detected in December by the American spy services at a suspected Chinese military facility located in the United Arab Emirates, more than a year after the country announced that the project was being stopped because of concerns raised by the United States, revealed 'The Discord Leaks' according to The Washington Post.

Activities carried out at a port close to Abu Dhabi falls among the list of developments in the UAE which involved the Chinese military. The US intelligence was monitoring this as it was concerned that the UAE, which has been a longtime security partner of the United States, is developing closer ties with China at the expense of Washington's interests, stated the report published in The Washington Post.

The revelations were made in the documents and interviews related to the senior officials in the Biden administration. The US officials were also concerned after Chinese military personnel were seen around other sensitive construction sites.&nbsp;

The efforts made by Beijing in the UAE are part of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army's (PLA) ambitious campaign to build a global military network which includes 10 logistical support sites and five overseas bases by 2030, stated one of the documents which included a map of other facilities planned in Southeast Asia, Middle East and throughout Africa.

The initiative was called by the Chinese military officials as “Project 141,” stated the leaked materials. &nbsp;

“There are some people in the administration who think the UAE has fundamentally decided to work with us. I do not believe that,” a senior administration official was quoted as saying in the report.&nbsp;

The UAE’s leaders “think that China is hugely important right now and rising in the Middle East,” the official added.&nbsp;

The Chinese Embassy's spokesman in Washington Liu Pengyu said that concerns of the US about the military facilities of China are misplaced.

United States President Joe Biden will become the first sitting president of the States to visit Papua New Guinea in at least a century, said Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko on Thursday, while he spoke about the plans for the symbolic but brief trip.&nbsp;

In May, Biden will stop in Port Moresby as per the plans as he travels to attend the G7 summit in Japan and the Quad summit in Australia, said the foreign minister.&nbsp;

"He is coming on the 22nd, in the morning, and will be here for three hours only," said Tkatchenko said, stating that the meeting is likely to focus on security, economy, and climate change. &nbsp;

The trip of the US president symbolises an agreement to the rapidly growing strategic importance of Papua New Guinea, as the US and its allies fight with China for influence across the region of Asia-Pacific.

In 20218, Chinese President Xi Jinping had made a visit to Port Moresby to much fanfare, as flags of China were hoisted across the capital and his motorcade whizzed past the welcoming crowds.

Joe Biden to become first sitting US president to visit Papua New Guinea in a century

A report by the Washington Post revealed&nbsp;that the Taliban in Afghanistan are ready to cooperate with the United States authorities in combating the militant group Islamic State (IS). The report suggested that the Taliban see the IS militants as "a threat to their own powerbase".&nbsp;

The Taliban took control of Kabul in August 2021 when US-led forces withdrew after 20 years of war. It still seeks global recognition. Quoting US defence officials, the report mentioned that the "Afghan government" has been battling IS since it seized power.&nbsp;

The Post quoted a senior defence official as saying that "the duelling groups of religious fanatics are openly warring".&nbsp;

As quoted, the official said that "I would never want to say that we had mortgaged our counter-terrorism to a group like the Taliban, but it's a fact that, operationally, they put pressure on ISIS-K. In a strange world, we have mutually beneficial objectives there."&nbsp;

The Post has also credited some part of its report to the recent leak of classified Pentagon documents, to highlight how Afghanistan has become a significant coordination site for the Islamic State to plan attacks across Europe and Asia after President Biden withdrew personnel from the nation.&nbsp;

The report also mentioned that IS has been attacking Afghan Taliban's targets and as a counter, the latter targeting the former's hideouts.&nbsp;

The leaked documents assessed by the media outlet revealed specific efforts by IS to target embassies, churches, business centres and even last year's FIFA World Cup tournament.&nbsp;

The assessment, which is labelled top-secret, noted: "ISIS has been developing a cost-effective model for external operations that relies on resources from outside Afghanistan, operatives in target countries, and extensive facilitation networks."&nbsp;

"The model will likely enable ISIS to overcome obstacles — such as competent security services — and reduce some plot timelines, minimizing disruption opportunities," the document, which also had logos of Defense Department organisations, further mentioned.&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden has announced he will run for re-election in 2024, to "finish the job" he started in 2021. The 80-year-old, who is America's oldest president, said he wanted to extend his run for another four years. But there are conflicting views on his re-election bid. &nbsp;

There is a sense of acceptance but a lack of excitement and enthusiasm for America's first octogenarian president's re-election bid. Before the announcement, Democrats had said they like and approve of Biden, but a report by CBS noted that there will be more "acceptance" than "excitement" and also there will be "nervousness" than "confidence".&nbsp;

Polls have shown that the majority of Americans don't wish Biden to run again. But he is still running—the second time in four years. So, a sitting US president is willing to go against the approval ratings. Last time it was Donald Trump, whose campaign failed in 2020.&nbsp;

<h2>Biden's announcement on April 25</h2>

Biden gave a speech to trade union members and highlighted his accomplishments. He showcased the construction jobs which were created since he took office.

"We — you and I — together we’re turning things around and we’re doing it in a big way. It's time to finish the job. Finish the job."&nbsp;

Biden released a three-minute video on the fourth anniversary of when he declared for the White House in 2019. It basically details what Biden's plans are, and how he is intending to go about everything. In the video, he promised to heal the "soul of the nation" amid the turbulent presidency of Donald Trump.&nbsp;

Biden said: "I said we are in a battle for the soul of America, and we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer."&nbsp;

<h2>Biden's re-election announcement. The right decision?</h2>

A CBS report, based on the poll it ran, stated that the Democrats who want Biden to run again think his job performance warrants it and they believe that he can beat Republicans, again. However, what's concerning is that nearly half of Democrats don't want him to run. They have said that his age is the main reason and that&nbsp;they are not worried about him winning or losing. The polls show them saying&nbsp;that it's "time for someone new".&nbsp;

Another poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that just 47 per cent of Democrats say they want him to seek a second term, up from 37 per cent in February.&nbsp;

Despite the conflict, it is expected that supporters, and Biden himself, will bank on his decade-long experience in politics and also the first-term legislative achievements will come in handy.

Trends show that he will win his party’s nomination and there will be no serious Democratic challengers. But the road to ultimate victory will be a massive struggle as he is going to face plenty of hardships to retain the presidency in a bitterly divided nation and Democrats will vie to be united, as the prospect of Trump returning to power should be enough for the party to stay together as a team.&nbsp;

<h2>Biden's health issues</h2>

Concerns have been raised over Biden's deteriorating health as his gaffes on various occasions have caused critics to cast aspersions on his ability to perform in office. However, he was declared "fit for duty" by his doctor earlier this year in February. It was the final annual medical check-up before he announced that he would run for the 2024 presidential election. But a former White House physician slammed the health report of Biden and asked to end the "cover-up". US Representative Ronny Jackson, who served the Trump and Obama administrations, called the health report of Biden "alarming" and alleged that it doesn't mention the "declining" mental health of the US president.&nbsp;

Biden's physician, Kevin O'Connor, said in a letter published by the White House, "President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those of as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief." As per the report, Biden remains "fit for duty" and can fully execute all of his responsibilities without any "exemptions or accommodations."&nbsp;However, Jackson told US-based Fox News that the report was nothing but a "cover-up".

<h2>The challenges Biden faces</h2>

The Biden administration faced criticism over the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan after nearly 20 years of war. The massive military aid to help Ukraine against Russia in the ongoing war has also been slammed by some Americans amid uncertain economic crosscurrents. Coronavirus, abortion, and unending gun violence are some other burning issues. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Weighing in on the same, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said in a statement, "if voters let Biden 'finish the job,' inflation will continue to skyrocket, crime rates will rise, more fentanyl will cross our open borders, children will continue to be left behind, and American families will be worse off."&nbsp;

In such a scenario, how Biden will forge forward, will be interesting to watch.&nbsp;

Another poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that just 47 per cent of Democrats say they want him to seek a second term, up from 37 per cent in February. Despite the conflict, it is expected that supporters, and Biden himself, will bank on his decade-long experience in politics and also the first-term legislative achievements will come in handy. Trends show that he will win his party’s nomination and there will be no serious Democratic challengers. But the road to ultimate victory will be a massive struggle as he is going to face plenty of hardships to retain the presidency in a bitterly divided nation and Democrats will vie to be united, as the prospect of Trump returning to power should be enough for the party to stay together as a team. Biden's health issues Concerns have been raised over Biden's deteriorating health as his gaffes on various occasions have caused critics to cast aspersions on his ability to perform in office. However, he was declared "fit for duty" by his doctor earlier this year in February. It was the final annual medical check-up before he announced that he would run for the 2024 presidential election. But a former White House physician slammed the health report of Biden and asked to end the "cover-up". US Representative Ronny Jackson, who served the Trump and Obama administrations, called the health report of Biden "alarming" and alleged that it doesn't mention the "declining" mental health of the US president. Biden's physician, Kevin O'Connor, said in a letter published by the White House, "President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those of as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief." As per the report, Biden remains "fit for duty" and can fully execute all of his responsibilities without any "exemptions or accommodations." However, Jackson told US-based Fox News that the report was nothing but a "cover-up". The challenges Biden faces The Biden administration faced criticism over the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan after nearly 20 years of war. The massive military aid to help Ukraine against Russia in the ongoing war has also been slammed by some Americans amid uncertain economic crosscurrents. Coronavirus, abortion, and unending gun violence are some other burning issues. Weighing in on the same, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said in a statement, "if voters let Biden 'finish the job,' inflation will continue to skyrocket, crime rates will rise, more fentanyl will cross our open borders, children will continue to be left behind, and American families will be worse off." In such a scenario, how Biden will forge forward, will be interesting to watch. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Explained: Why there is less enthusiasm for Joe Biden's 2024 re-election bid

Russian foreign ministry's head of nuclear non-proliferation Vladimir Yermakov on Tuesday said that there has been a steady growth in the direct military confrontation between the world's two nuclear powers - the United States and Russia. The senior Russian diplomat warned about the nuclear confrontation.&nbsp;

Yermakov, speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, said the conduct of Washington towards Moscow is escalating the risks of a nuclear war in the future.&nbsp;

Since Russia started invading Ukraine 14 months ago, regular charges were issued by Moscow against the United States and Yermakov called out "the collective West" for increasing the risks of a nuclear war.

"If the United States continues to follow its current course of confrontation with Russia, with the stakes constantly escalating on the verge of sliding into direct armed conflict, then the fate of START (nuclear arms treaty) may be a foregone conclusion," said Yermakov.&nbsp;

In March, the US informed Russia that it will stop exchanging data on its nuclear forces after Moscow refused to share the same, calling it a reaction to Russia's decision of pulling out from the New START treaty.

"In the worst-case scenario, i.e. if Washington drives the situation to a military clash between the strongest nuclear powers, then it is not the fate of the New START but the fate of the entire world that will be a concern," &nbsp;Yermakov said.

"This once again confirms that the most pressing threat today is connected not with the dynamic of stimuli for the first massive strike, which is supposed to be curbed by agreements like the New START, but with a danger of nuclear escalation as a result of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers. And, to our deepest regrets, these risks keep growing," he added.

However, he stated the West "remains deaf to the calls," and even "maliciously distorts them for propaganda purposes."

The diplomat stated that, for improving the situation, "the US must immediately take concrete steps on de-escalation and to abolish the hostile course towards undermining Russia’s security in practice."

"There is simply no other way to reverse the negative trend," Yermakov added. &nbsp;

Risks of nuclear confrontation with United States growing, claims Russia

North Dakota's Republican governor Doug Burgum on Monday signed legislation which banned abortion throughout the pregnancy period, including a slight exception of a period of six weeks of gestation. With the signing of the legislation, North Dakota adopted on Monday one of the strictest anti-abortion laws present in the country.&nbsp;

In the gestation period of six weeks, the women will be allowed to carry out the abortion in cases of incest, rape or medical emergency, like ectopic pregnancy.

“This bill clarifies and refines existing state law ... and reaffirms North Dakota as a pro-life state,” said Burgum, in a statement.

The ruling of the US Supreme Court last year overturned the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision which had legalised abortion country-wide. The ruling also led to various states adopting laws which restrict or ban the procedure. Many rulings had to face legal challenges. Currently, abortion at any stage of pregnancy is banned in almost 13 states and has been kept on hold in other states due to court injunctions. &nbsp;

On the other hand, a network for strengthening access to abortion was launched by the Democratic governors in around 20 states this year in the wake of the decision taken by the US Supreme Court that eliminated the constitutional right of women to end a pregnancy. The apex court had given state governments the regulatory powers to pass legislations on abortion to state governments.&nbsp;

The law adopted by North Dakota will come into effect immediately, however, the state Supreme Court ruled against a previous ban last month which will remain blocked till the lawsuit over its constitutionality is in process.&nbsp;

The lawmakers, last week, said that they wish to pass the latest bill which will indicate to the state’s high court that North Dakota's people want to restrict abortion.&nbsp;

People who support the abortion ban said that the legislation signed on Monday protects all human life, while opponents feel the decision will have dire consequences for women and girls.

Republican Sen Janne Myrdal sponsored the latest state legislation.

“North Dakota has always been pro-life and believed in valuing the moms and children both. We’re pretty happy and grateful that the governor stands with that value," said Myrdal in an interview.&nbsp;

Democratic Rep. Liz Conmy, who voted against the bill, said she had hoped Burgum would not sign the legislation.&nbsp;

“I don’t think women in North Dakota are going to accept this, and there will be action in the future to get our rights back. Our Legislature is overwhelmingly pro-pregnancy, but I think women in the state would like to make their own decisions," Conmy said.&nbsp;

North Dakota governor signs legislation banning almost all abortions

At least nine members of the US Congress sold banking stocks before and during the banking turmoil in March, sparking suspicions of possible insider trading, The Financial Times has&nbsp;reported.&nbsp;

According to Quiver Quantitative's analysis of public declarations of stock sales, Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey and member of the financial services committee, disclosed selling his shares in Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) on March 9. This transaction was valued between $1,000 and $15,000 and took place&nbsp;a day before the bank collapsed, sending U.S. banking stocks plummeting.

Gottheimer, the Financial Times noted, reportedly sold his shares&nbsp;in Charles Schwab Corp. on March 6 and March 14 for a similar amount. Gottheimer also sold his shares&nbsp;in Seacoast Banking, a troubled Florida bank, on March 29. The share price of Seacoast Banking has fallen by&nbsp;10 percent&nbsp;since the transaction.

According to Quiver Quantitative's analysis, the New Jersey Democrat was one of the most active stock dealers in the House of Representatives in 2022, with over 380 transactions.&nbsp;The Congressman's&nbsp;representatives, however, stated that his financial decisions were made at the discretion of a third-party financial consultant.

Gottheimer was just one of the several Congress lawmakers&nbsp;who sold their banking stocks last month when the industry was in upheaval.

Daniel Goldman, a House Democrat representing a New York district, sold a Schwab position worth between $15,000 and $50,000 on March 6. On March 15, he sold his shares in San Francisco-based First Republic Bank. Since then, First Republic shares have dropped by more than half.&nbsp;

Conflict of interest?

The allegations of stock sales by US&nbsp;lawmakers have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, as lawmakers may&nbsp;access&nbsp;non-public information that could impact stock prices. Insider trading, which involves using non-public information to gain an unfair advantage in stock trading, is illegal and unethical.

Public advocacy groups worry that enabling government officials to own or trade stocks could create a conflict of interest with their official obligations, even if they are legally compelled to declare them.

"It exemplifies why public trust in the elected officials is so low," Danielle Caputo, legal counsel for ethics at the Campaign Legal Centre, a campaign watchdog organisation, told Financial Times.

At least 9 US lawmakers sold banking stocks prior to market turmoil: Report

In the first major move under its new CEO David Risher, US ride-hailing giant Lyft is all set for a significant job cut.&nbsp;

While the company has not disclosed the exact number of affected employees, a&nbsp;Wall Street Journal report&nbsp;indicates that the cuts could impact around 30 percent&nbsp;of Lyft's workforce, equivalent to more than 4,000 employees. According to the US daily, the layoffs could cut Lyft's costs in half.

The decision comes only weeks after Lyft's newly appointed CEO announced that the company was not for sale, disappointing some investors who had hoped that the departure of the company's founders would pave the way for a purchase, which had propelled the stock upwards last month.

Lyft And Its Struggle To Stay Afloat&nbsp;

Lyft&nbsp;Inc. is a company that provides and manages an online social rideshare community platform. It gives users access to a network of shared bikes and scooters for shorter rides, first- and last-mile legs of multimodal trips, and information about nearby public transit lines and Lyft Rentals to help them plan any trip. Marcus Cohn, John Zimmer, Rajat Suri, Matt van Horn, and Logan Green created the company in 2007, and it is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Lyft has faced challenges recently, including increased competition from rivals such as Uber, regulatory hurdles, and financial pressures. The COVID-19 pandemic has also significantly impacted the ride-hailing industry, with ride demand declining as people stayed home and limited their travel due to lockdowns and social distancing measures. In November, the company had let off 683 employees, or 13 percent&nbsp;of its workforce.&nbsp;

Following the epidemic lows, Uber and Lyft have been involved in a struggle for market dominance. According to Reuters, investors are concerned that Lyft's price cuts to prevent being a distant second in the North American ride-sharing industry could crimp its profitability. Lyft's stock declined approximately 11 percent&nbsp;this year, compared to Uber's price rise of 27.5 percent. According to the most recent company report, Uber's global footprint and more diverse industries gives&nbsp;it an advantage over US-focused Lyft.

The job cuts at Lyft is in line with the broader trend of cost-cutting measures in the ride-hailing industry, as companies face increasing pressures to demonstrate profitability and sustainable growth. Many ride-hailing companies have been exploring various strategies, including reducing the workforce, optimizing operations, and diversifying revenue streams, to navigate the challenges in the industry and improve their financial performance.

To address the challenge of safety post-COVID, many ride-hailing companies like Lyft and Uber have also introduced safety measures to gain customer’s trust amid rising urban mobility and declining car ownership, as reported by FATbit Technologies.

A teacher in the Texas state in the US was seen encouraging students to fight inside her classroom, following which the 24-year-old was arrested by the authorities.

The Mesquite Police Department in Texas said that the teacher Natally Garcia was charged with four counts of endangering children's lives. Garcia allegedly put four students in danger of bodily injury last week, police said.

Garcia allegedly made rules and space for the 12 and 13-year-old children in her class to fight in the classroom. She was reportedly seen in the security footage telling other students&nbsp;to guard the door.

"[She] definitely [was] trying to conceal her actions and actions that were going on in the class," Police Lt. Brandon Ricketts was quoted as saying by Fox News.&nbsp;

At least four students were seen fighting in the video. The teacher called out "30 seconds" before one of the fights began, and a timer was heard going off at various times while the fights were taking place.

Betty Martinez, the mother of a student who she says was frightened and secretly recorded the fight, told the outlet that she was in "utter disbelief" after seeing the video.

"I thought it was a joke," she said. "I didn’t think it was real. My brain couldn’t comprehend what was going on, right?"

Mesquite Independent School District told the outlet that the substitute teacher was fired and was only with the school for about a month.

"Her actions are appalling and intolerable," the school district said in a statement. "We share the disgust that the families of students in this class must feel."

USA: Teacher arrested for encouraging students to fight inside classroom

China on Monday (April 17) said that it has tracked an American warship through Taiwan Strait and further noted that the troops remained on "high alert".&nbsp;

The US Navy on Monday called the sailing of the warship USS Milius through the Taiwan Strait before a "routine" transit. It comes just a few days after China ended its latest war games around the island.&nbsp;

Amid China's continued military aggression in the South China Sea, several Western navies conduct "freedom of navigation operations" regularly. The main aim of these drills is to assert the international status of regional waterways such as the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.&nbsp;

The US Navy said in a statement that the USS Milius guided-missile destroyer "conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit April 16 (local time) through waters where high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law".&nbsp;

"The ship transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State," it added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China says it has tracked the vessel. Colonel Shi Yi, who is a Chinese military spokesman, said that the troops in the area "remain on a high level of alert at all times and will resolutely defend national sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability".&nbsp;

On the other hand, Taiwan's defence ministry said on Monday that during the vessel's transit, its military had "closely monitored the dynamics in our surrounding sea and airspace, and the situation was normal."&nbsp;

Beijing claims Taiwan as its own territory since the Chinese civil war of the 1940s and also says that the island nation will defy the one-nation policy by pushing for formal independence. Beijing even claimed that, in case needed, it will use force to unite the two territories.&nbsp;

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wrapped up his visit to China on Saturday (April 15), accusing the United States of encouraging war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

During the China visit, Lula strengthened economic ties with his country's main trading partner and also pushed the narrative that "Brazil is back" as a key player on the global stage.&nbsp;

Lula's visit also emerged as a warning that the South American country's deepening relations with China were non-negotiable.&nbsp;

United States President Joe Biden on Monday (April 10) again hinted that he may run for the next presidential election, but also said that he was not prepared to announce it yet.&nbsp;

In an interview with NBC's "Today" show before the White House Easter Egg Roll, Biden said: "I plan on running ... but we're not prepared to announce it yet." Biden was accompanied companied by his wife First Lady Jill Biden.&nbsp;

Despite the indications, the 80-year-old Democrat has delayed an expected campaign launch for months. However, both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have repeatedly teased the intention to run. So far, there's no formal announcement.&nbsp;

Biden said that he intended to attend numerous more egg rolls. He has one more Easter left in his first term, but he said that he "plans on at least three or four more Easter Egg Rolls. Maybe five..., maybe six, what the hell -- I don't know".&nbsp;

Egg rolling or an Easter egg roll is a traditional game played with eggs at Easter. The tradition is different in different countries. In this traditional event, children race to push coloured eggs over the grass.&nbsp;

Several speculations have been raised over Biden's health and his capability to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency despite the fact that he was declared "fit for duty" by his doctor in February, which was the final annual medical check-up before he is expected to declare he's running for re-election in 2024.&nbsp;

US restaurant scales spice chart from 'Zero spice' to 'India very spicy'; goes viral

The White House said on Monday (April 10) that it is prepared to fight and protect reproductive rights after Texas federal judge’s ruling suspended approval of the abortion pill Mifepristone. Mifepristone is part of a two-drug regimen for medication abortions in the first ten weeks of pregnancy. The pill accounts for over half of all abortions in the US.&nbsp;

Addressing a press conference, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the court ruling dangerous.

"Over the weekend, a single court in Texas has taken the dangerous steps of rejecting FDA's (Food and Drug Administration) scientific approval of Mifepristone, a medication that has been on the market for more than 20 years and is used safely in more than 60 countries, providing critical care for women. This court decision threatens access to this medication, which is used not only for abortion but also for other critical purposes, like helping women manage miscarriages," she said.&nbsp;

Jean-Pierre added the ruling further strips away Americans' fundamental freedoms and interferes with a woman's ability to make decisions about her own body. The White House press secretary clarified that &nbsp;Mifepristone continues to be available and approved for the time being.&nbsp;

Last Friday (April 10), Texas federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ruled that the FDA exceeded its authority by ignoring the abortion pill's risks and relying on "plainly unsound reasoning" when approving it.

Earlier on Monday, the US government appealed the judge's decision to suspend the FDA's 23-year-old approval of Mifepristone. In a court filing, the Justice Department said that the district court's extraordinary and unprecedented order should be stayed pending appeal, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

"If allowed to take effect, the court's order would thwart FDA's scientific judgment and severely harm women," the filing added.&nbsp;

Also on Monday, around 400 pharmaceutical executives including &nbsp;Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla signed the letter criticising the April 10 ruling. The decision ignores decades of scientific evidence and legal precedent, the letter said, adding Judge Kacsmaryk's act of judicial interference set a precedent for diminishing FDA's authority over drug approvals.&nbsp;

Mifepristone is part of a two-drug regimen for medication abortions in the first ten weeks of pregnancy. The pill accounts for over half of all abortions in the US. Addressing a press conference, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the court ruling dangerous. "Over the weekend, a single court in Texas has taken the dangerous steps of rejecting FDA's (Food and Drug Administration) scientific approval of Mifepristone, a medication that has been on the market for more than 20 years and is used safely in more than 60 countries, providing critical care for women. This court decision threatens access to this medication, which is used not only for abortion but also for other critical purposes, like helping women manage miscarriages," she said. Jean-Pierre added the ruling further strips away Americans' fundamental freedoms and interferes with a woman's ability to make decisions about her own body. The White House press secretary clarified that Mifepristone continues to be available and approved for the time being. Last Friday (April 10), Texas federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ruled that the FDA exceeded its authority by ignoring the abortion pill's risks and relying on "plainly unsound reasoning" when approving it. Earlier on Monday, the US government appealed the judge's decision to suspend the FDA's 23-year-old approval of Mifepristone. In a court filing, the Justice Department said that the district court's extraordinary and unprecedented order should be stayed pending appeal, the news agency AFP reported. "If allowed to take effect, the court's order would thwart FDA's scientific judgment and severely harm women," the filing added. Also on Monday, around 400 pharmaceutical executives including Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla signed the letter criticising the April 10 ruling. The decision ignores decades of scientific evidence and legal precedent, the letter said, adding Judge Kacsmaryk's act of judicial interference set a precedent for diminishing FDA's authority over drug approvals. Prepared to fight Texas abortion pill ruling: White House

China announced the completion of military drills around Taiwan on Monday, after carrying them out for three days, stating that the integrated military capabilities were tested by them under actual combat conditions as they practised precision strikes and “sealed off” the island that is viewed by Beijing as its own.

The drills, dubbed as "Joint Sword", were announced by Beijing on Saturday, after Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen landed back in Taipei following his meeting with US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.

The use of force was never renounced by China to bring Taiwan, which is democratically governed, under the control of Beijing. The claims of China have been strongly disputed by Taiwan's government and the latter also denounced the drills.

The Chinese military stated that it had "successfully completed" the exercises and "comprehensively tested" the capabilities of various units amid actual combat conditions.

"The troops in the theatre are ready to fight all the time and can fight at any time, resolutely crushing any form of Taiwan independence separatism and foreign interference," said the Eastern Theatre Command of the People's Liberation Army, in a statement.

Earlier on Monday, Chinese state television said that drills were staged by the aircraft, which included the nuclear-capable H-6 bombers armed with live missiles and warships, to "form a multi-directional island-encompassing blockade situation".

The Eastern Theatre Command stated that the Shandong aircraft carrier also participated in combat patrols, and the fighters were seen taking off from its deck.

Since last week, Taiwan was tracking the Shandong in the Pacific Ocean.

A map was published by Taiwan's defence ministry on Monday of the Chinese air force activities that took place in the last 24 hours which showed four carrier-based Chinese J-15 fighters were operating over the Pacific Ocean to the east of Taiwan.

The defence ministry said that on the last day, 12 Chinese warships and 91 military jets were spotted around Taiwan, and the drills were being conducted by the Shandong carrier group in the Western Pacific.

Extending its support to China's military drills, the Kremlin on Monday stated that Beijing had a "sovereign right" to respond to what was called "provocative acts" by Moscow.

"We have witnessed multiple acts that were provocative in their character towards the Chinese People's Republic," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. "China has the sovereign right to respond to these provocative acts, including with military manoeuvres, in strict accordance with international law,” he added.

Meanwhile, the United States which has continuously appealed to China to show restraint sent the USS Milius guided-missile destroyer on Monday through South China Sea's contested part.

China ends military drills around Taiwan which simulated 'sealing off' the island

China on Monday (April 10) slammed the United States for the "illegal" intrusion of a warship into waters Beijing claims in the South China Sea. The US earlier said that in a "freedom of navigation" operation, its guided-missile destroyer the USS Milius sailed through waters claimed by Beijing.&nbsp;

The US warship apparently sailed near one of the most important man-made and Chinese-controlled islands. The statement revealed that the ship sailed within 12 nautical miles of Mischief Reef, which is about 1,400 kilometres from the southern tip of Taiwan's mainland.&nbsp;

A statement by the Navy noted that the operation "upheld the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea". The US Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement: "Under customary international law ... features like Mischief Reef that is submerged at high tide in their naturally formed state are not entitled to a territorial sea."&nbsp;

It added, "The land reclamation efforts, installations, and structures built on Mischief Reef do not change this characterisation under international law."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China's People's Liberation Army said that the US warship had "illegally" entered waters near the reef without Chinese approval/ China also said that the vessel was monitored by the forces and a warning was also issued.&nbsp;

Beijing slams US over 'illegal' intrusion of American warship in South China Sea

The United States officials scrambled to probe the source of the apparent leak after a trove of highly classified military and intelligence documents appeared online.&nbsp;

The leak of confidential documents is embarrassing for the US and dangerous for American allies as it has divulged details ranging from Ukraine's air defences to Israel's Mossad spy agency.&nbsp;

An official even said that the concerning leak suggests they may have been leaked by an American rather than an ally as it had documents relating to the Russia-Ukraine war, China, the Middle East and Africa, South Korea and more.&nbsp;

Michael Mulroy, a former senior Pentagon official, told Reuters in an interview: "The focus now is on this being a US leak, as many of the documents were only in US hands."&nbsp;

There's no confirmation, but US officials have alleged that Russia or pro-Russian elements are likely behind the leak of classified military documents posted. However, Moscow did not immediately respond to the allegations.&nbsp;

The leaked documents included secret intelligence reports and it appeared that some of the documents may have been altered before they were posted. Two US officials told Reuters on Sunday that they have not ruled out that the documents may have been doctored to mislead investigators as to their origin or to disseminate false information that may harm US security interests.&nbsp;
