Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hauled $8.2 million in fundraising in the first 24 hours after he announced his candidacy for the presidential elections, confirmed his campaign to Fox News on Thursday.

The Republican's blockbuster fundraising is a move by his election campaign to showcase the strength and enthusiasm that people have for DeSantis as he steps into GOP 2024 nomination race where United States former president Donald Trump has been the clear front-runner, as per the latest polling.

The money raised by the Republican has topped the previous record of $6.3 million which was hauled by President Joe Biden when he was a White House candidate in the first 24 hours after the launch of his campaign in 2019.

The fundraising by DeSantis includes online contributions along with funds brought in by bundlers who had gathered at a DeSantis donor summit held in Miami, Florida on Thursday.

On Wednesday, DeSantis announced his candidacy for president in a campaign launch video, which was followed by the glitched appearance of DeSantis on Twitter with Elon Musk, where the Republican launched his 2024 campaign.

The campaign of DeSantis soon termed the severe glitches as a "break the internet" moment because of intense interest during its launch.

However, Trump and his allies called the episode an embarrassing flop. The former president also shared a video on his Truth Social outlet, in which a rocket was seen crashing and exploding with the caption "Ron! 2024."

In a statement, Trump's spokesperson said that "Ron DeSantis can't run away from his disastrous, embarrassing, and low-energy campaign announcement."

The media of North Korea called the plans of South Korea, Japan and the United States to share real-time data on the missile launches by the regime of Kim Jong-un as “sinister measures” as the Jong-un government lashed out at South for carrying out live-fire exercises with the US.

The leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea met at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan and discussed new co-ordination in the wake of illicit nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.

A series of missile and weapons tests have been undertaken by North Korea in recent months, the most recent being in a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The missile and nuclear weapons programmes of North Korea are banned by the UN security council.

<h2>US and South Korea start live-fire exercises</h2>

The US and South Korean forces started the live-fire exercises on Thursday, which simulated a "full-scale attack" launched by North Korea, which they called as the biggest such drill to display the "overwhelming" military capability of the South against the growing threats of North.

Howitzers were fired in Pocheon's mountainside near North Korea's fortified border. Meanwhile, manoeuvring battle tanks fired their guns at the targets, which sent dust, smoke as well as shockwaves across the valley.

Around 2,500 troops from the United States and South Korea participated in the exercises. These exercises will be carried out four more times from now until mid-June, stated South Korea's defence ministry.

"The exercise demonstrated our military's capability and readiness to strongly respond to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and to a full-scale attack," the ministry added in a press release, vowing to maintain "peace through overwhelming strength".

North Korea's first military spy satellite</h2>

Last week, the state media of North Korea reported that final approval was given by their leader Kim Jong Un for final preparations for launching the country's first military spy satellite.

Kim stated that it is important for the country to counter threats from South Korea and the US. Analysts stated that the satellite will improve the surveillance capability of North Korea which will enable it to hit targets more accurately when it engages in a war.

In recent commercial satellite imagery, progress made on the new launch pad in the satellite launching station of North could be seen, with activity appearing to be carried out with a "new level of urgency” for the launch, stated the US-based monitoring group 38 North.

The forces of South Korea and the US have been carrying out multiple training exercises in recent months, which included air and sea drills involving US B-1B bombers.

North Korea has angrily reacted to the drills which it characterised as preparations being carried out by US and South Korean forces for an invasion.

In a move that will further inflame relations between the two nations, lawmakers in the United States have called for retaliation against China for banning memory chipmaker Micron Technology.

US Representative Mike Gallagher, who chairs a Congressional committee focusing on China, has proposed adding Changxin Memory technologies to a "blacklist" that would prevent it from doing business with American companies.

His colleague Michael McCaul, who is the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also slammed Beijing and called for a response. Bloomberg quoted McCaul as saying, "I urge the administration to use the many authorities Congress has given it to hold the CCP accountable."&nbsp;

The chips that power most technical developments, from artificial intelligence to self-driving vehicles, are produced by Changxin Memory, one of a handful of significant Chinese enterprises that reflect Beijing's ambitions to equal the US in terms of technology.

Moreover, the Chinese chipmaker wants to create history by launching an initial public offering in its home market this year, with a potential valuation of more than $14.5 billion.

The US lawmaker's proposal was in response to Beijing's decision to prevent Micron from supplying China's key infrastructure for reasons of national security.&nbsp;

China's move was an unprecedented step that has already sparked charges of overreach. Tensions over technology have been rising amid dueling claims of "economic coercion" since the US put broad export restrictions on semiconductor equipment to china.

On Wednesday, Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, defended the government's decision to withdraw from Micron.&nbsp;

"The cybersecurity review on micron's products sold in China is carried out according to China's laws, and the decision was made based on facts," Bloomberg quoted her as saying.&nbsp;

Ning added that the United States has placed dozens of Chinese businesses and individuals "into all kinds of lists and imposed all kinds of restrictions" without providing any evidence to support their inclusion.

Chip war intensifies: Lawmakers want US to 'blacklist' Chinese firm after Micron ban

More than 33 million people in the United States drive automobiles that contain a potentially lethal threat: airbag inflators that, in rare situations, might rupture and spew shards in a collision. Only a handful of them are aware of it, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Additionally, they are unlikely to find out anytime soon due to a disagreement between federal safety officials and an airbag parts maker.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA )&nbsp;has demanded that the maker, ARC Automotive of Knoxville, Tennessee, recall 67 million inflators that have the potential to blow apart a metal canister and unleash shrapnel. However, ARC is refusing to do so, perhaps setting up a legal battle with the agency.

The NHTSA claims that the recall is important&nbsp;since ARC's inflators have killed two individuals and injured&nbsp;at least seven others in the United States and Canada. The explosions, which began in 2009, are still&nbsp;ongoing.

After an eight-year observation, the NHTSA tentatively decided that the inflators are faulty. According to the records provided by the government, the inflators date from at least the 2002 model year through January 2018, when ARC placed equipment on its manufacturing lines to identify possible safety issues.

Marlene Beaudoin, a 40-year-old mother of ten from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, was killed after her 2015 Chevrolet Traverse SUV was hit by metal shards, reported the Associated Press.

<h2>What does the ARC say?</h2>

ARC says that there is no safety fault, that the NHTSA's demand is based on a theory rather than technical results, and that the agency lacks the jurisdiction to require a components manufacturer to carry out recalls, which ARC claims are the duty of automakers.

In a letter to the NHTSA, ARC stated that no carmaker has discovered a problem common to all 67 million inflators, and no root cause of the inflator ruptures has been identified.

“ARC believes they resulted from random ‘one-off’ manufacturing anomalies that were properly addressed by vehicle manufacturers through lot-specific recalls,” the letter said.

In a statement, NHTSA made it clear&nbsp;that both ARC and automakers are responsible for recalls and that it can seek a recall from a parts maker that supplies multiple automakers.

The NHTSA will next make a final finding on whether the inflators are faulty, followed by a public hearing. It may require ARC to court to obtain a recall order. The NHTSA will not specify when or if any of this would occur.

Meanwhile, owners of cars manufactured by at least a dozen manufacturers — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Ford, Toyota, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Hyundai, and Kia — are left to wonder if their vehicles possess ARC driver or front passenger inflators. (ARC inflators can be found on both sides of some automobiles.)

There is no one&nbsp;method for car owners to know whether their inflators are produced by ARC because ARC sells inflators that are incorporated in the airbags of other manufacturers. Neither the NHTSA, the ARC, nor the manufacturers have issued a comprehensive list of affected&nbsp;vehicles.

The United States claimed that it had no involvement in a recent incursion into Russia which Moscow claimed ended with armed insurgents' defeat, who had crossed the border from Ukraine.

Belgorod incursion: US insists it did not encourage or enable strikes inside of Russia

The members of the Catholic clergy in Illinois are accused of sexual abuse of children, an investigative report published on Tuesday revealed. &nbsp;

The report mentioned that they have ministered in the church for almost seven decades. At least 1,997 children across the state were sexually abused by more than 450 Catholic clerics across the state.&nbsp;

Kwame Raoul, the attorney general of the office of Illinois, released the 696-page report detailing decades of child sex abuse.&nbsp;

The Illinois Catholic dioceses include the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Dioceses of Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford, and Springfield.&nbsp;

The report revealed that the probe began in the latter half of 2018 on the heels of a Pennsylvania grand jury report finding that more than 300 Catholic clerics had abused more than 1,000 children in the Commonwealth over the prior 70 years.&nbsp;

Raoul mentioned that the probe aimed at achieving two goals — one is to obtain a full accounting of substantiated child sex abuse and to provide a complete public report of the abusers.&nbsp;

And the second one is to give voice to survivors in an attempt to contribute to their healing journey.&nbsp;

The report mentioned that attorneys and investigators examined thousands of diocesan files. They reviewed more than 100,000 pages of documents held by the dioceses.&nbsp;

The Illinois attorney general also mentioned that they spent countless hours engaged in interviews and conversations with diocesan leadership and representatives.&nbsp;

"I was raised and confirmed in the Catholic church and sent my children to Catholic schools. I believe the church does important work to support vulnerable populations; however, as with any presumably reputable institution, the Catholic church must be held accountable when it betrays the public’s trust," Raoul said.&nbsp;

In response to the findings, the Archdiocese of Chicago and the dioceses of Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford, and Springfield issued a joint statement.&nbsp;

The members of the Catholic clergy in Illinois are accused of sexual abuse of children, an investigative report published on Tuesday revealed. The report mentioned that they have ministered in the church for almost seven decades. At least 1,997 children across the state were sexually abused by more than 450 Catholic clerics across the state. Kwame Raoul, the attorney general of the office of Illinois, released the 696-page report detailing decades of child sex abuse. The Illinois Catholic dioceses include the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Dioceses of Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford, and Springfield. The report revealed that the probe began in the latter half of 2018 on the heels of a Pennsylvania grand jury report finding that more than 300 Catholic clerics had abused more than 1,000 children in the Commonwealth over the prior 70 years. Raoul mentioned that the probe aimed at achieving two goals — one is to obtain a full accounting of substantiated child sex abuse and to provide a complete public report of the abusers. And the second one is to give voice to survivors in an attempt to contribute to their healing journey. The report mentioned that attorneys and investigators examined thousands of diocesan files. They reviewed more than 100,000 pages of documents held by the dioceses. The Illinois attorney general also mentioned that they spent countless hours engaged in interviews and conversations with diocesan leadership and representatives. "I was raised and confirmed in the Catholic church and sent my children to Catholic schools. I believe the church does important work to support vulnerable populations; however, as with any presumably reputable institution, the Catholic church must be held accountable when it betrays the public’s trust," Raoul said. In response to the findings, the Archdiocese of Chicago and the dioceses of Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford, and Springfield issued a joint statement. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago and Metropolitan of the Chicago Province, said, "The Catholic Church in Illinois has been at the forefront of dealing with sexual abuse of minors for many years." He further said, "At this time, working with the Office of the Attorney General of Illinois, the leaders of all six Illinois dioceses endeavored to make clear and update our approach, mindful of our lived experience and best practices in this field." The United States Energy Department, on Monday, informed lawmakers that it will no longer award a $200 million grant to the lithium battery company Microvast Holdings, according to Reuters reports.

The unexpected reversal happened after lawmakers cited concerns over Microvast's alleged links to China's government.

Two Republican lawmakers had condemned the Biden administration's decision to award funding to the company. They wrote a letter last year in the month of December to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, stating Microvast had ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that raised "serious concerns about the department’s ability to protect US&nbsp;taxpayer's dollars."

Representative Frank Lucas, a Republican, said the grant's cancellation was "a win for taxpayers and American businesses."

"These funds are intended to strengthen America’s battery production and supply chain, not to tighten China’s stranglehold on these supplies," he said in a statement.

However, the lawmakers did not provide any details about the company's alleged ties to the Chinese government.

The US Energy Department had been in talks with the lithium battery company over the grant that would help in constructing a plant in Tennessee. The grant emanated from the $1 trillion 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law.

The Texas-based company, Microvast has manufacturing plants in Tennessee, Germany and China.

The Energy Department has "a rigorous review process prior to the release of any awarded funds, and it is not uncommon for entities selected to participate in award negotiations ... to not ultimately receive an award," a spokesperson said.

"What the US&nbsp;government decides about US&nbsp;companies is a matter for the US&nbsp;itself, and I will not comment on it," said Mao Ning, a spokeswoman at China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when asked about the case at a regular news conference on Tuesday.

Barrasso, on Monday, said the administration of President Joe Biden, a Democrat, should "overhaul its grant-making process and conduct due diligence before issuing press releases" on grants.

US pulls $200 million grant for lithium battery company Microvast over Chinese ties

Senior Russian diplomats warned on Monday (May 22) that the transfer of F-16 jets to Ukraine would raise the question of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) role in the war and would not undermine Moscow's military goals.

Senior Russian diplomats warned on Monday (May 22) that the transfer of F-16 jets to Ukraine would raise the question of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) role in the war and would not undermine Moscow's military goals. For months, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been calling on Western allies to supply advanced fighter jets to help repel the Russian offensive. Last Friday (May 19), United States President Joe Biden endorsed training programmes for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s. Zelensky assured Biden that these aircraft would not be used to go into Russian territory. Taking to Telegram on Monday, Russia's ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov said that there is no infrastructure of F-16s in Ukraine and the needed number of pilots and maintenance personnel is not there either. ALSO READ | Belgorod governor claims Ukraine shelled Russia's border region "What will happen if American fighters take off from NATO airfields, controlled by foreign 'volunteers'?" Antonov questioned. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, meanwhile, told state-owned news agency RIA that any transfer of US jets to Ukraine would be pointless and stupid. The 'international fighter jet' coalition for Ukraine Last week, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte agreed to build an international coalition to help procure F-16 jets for Ukraine. According to a Downing Street spokesperson, Sunak and Rutte would work to build an "international coalition to provide Ukraine with combat air capabilities, supporting with everything from training to procuring F-16 jets," The Guardian reported on May 16. On May 19, Denmark and Portugal said that they would join this coalition. The US also joined the coalition, with Ukrainian President Zelensky thanking Joe Biden and Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollengren tweeting, "We welcome the upcoming approval by the United States of the training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets. Together with our close allies Denmark, Belgium and the UK, we are working on the modalities. We stand ready to support Ukraine on this." On Tuesday, Germany said that it was looking into options to support the coalition. However, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that any contribution by Berlin could be minor only as Germany itself does not own the US-built jet. Till now, the US has not committed to providing aircraft directly but only promised to train Ukrainian pilots. Similarly, the UK has only agreed to train pilots. Portugal too ruled out the possibility of supplying Ukraine with F16s but confirmed its readiness to participate in training. What jets have been given to Ukraine so far? Reuters reported last week that no Western-designed jets were donated to war-torn Ukraine yet. Poland provided Ukraine with 14 MiG-29s and has said it will give more. But President Andrzej Duda said on May 16 that Poland has too few F-16 jets to be able to give any to Ukraine. Apart from Poland, Slovakia donated 13 Mig-29s in various states of airworthiness to the war-torn country. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Ukraine war: Russia warns over transfer of F-16 jets to Kyiv

If there's one thing we should all be able to agree on, it's that all human beings belong to the same species, Homo sapiens.

But a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on Monday has found a yawning gap between what people claim to believe and what they actually hold true.

A team from Harvard and Tufts gathered data from more than 60,000 subjects who took part in 13 experiments that tested their implicit biases.

An overwhelming majority, over 90 percent, explicitly stated that white people and non-white people are equally human.

But on an implicit measure, white US participants, as well as white participants from other countries, consistently associated the attribute "human" (as opposed to "animal") with their own group more than other racial groups.&nbsp;

Conversely, Black, Asian and Hispanic participants showed no such bias, equally associating their own group and white people with "human."

"The biggest takeaway for me is that we're still grappling in a new form with sentiments that have been around for centuries," first author Kirsten Morehouse, a PhD student at Harvard University, told AFP.

Throughout history, the dehumanization of other races has been used as a pretext for unequal treatment, ranging from police brutality all the way to genocide. &nbsp;

<h2>Implicit Association Test</h2>

The research relied on the Implicit Association Test (IAT), a tool developed in the 1990s and now widely used in the field.

A computer-based measure, it tests the strength of associations between two concepts -- for example Black and white people or gay and straight people -- and two attributes like good or bad.

The idea is that easier pairings, as measured by faster key responses, are more strongly associated in the mind than difficult pairings, as measured by slower responses.

Researchers believe IAT tests reveal attitudes that people would be unwilling to state publicly, or might not even be aware of on a conscious level.&nbsp;

Across all the experiments, 61 percent of white participants associated white people more with "human" and Black people more with "animal."

An even greater number -- 69 percent of white participants -- associated white participants more with humans and Asians more with animals, and the same result occurred for white people taking a white-Hispanic test.

These effects held true across age, religion and education of participants, but did vary by political affiliation and gender. Self-identified conservatives and men expressed slightly stronger implicit "human = white" associations.

Non-white people did not show an implicit bias in favor of their own racial groups compared to white people.

But they did show a bias towards whites as more human when the test was between white people and another minority group, for example Asians asked to take a test that assessed their attitudes towards white people versus Black people.

<h2>Social hierarchy</h2>

Morehouse attributed these findings to the fact that white people are socially and economically dominant in the United States, where 85 percent of the participants were from (8.5 percent were from Western Europe).

She theorized that while you might expect all races to be more biased in favor of their own "in-group," such sentiments might be canceled out by their lower standing in American society, resulting in overall neutrality.

The fact that "third party" participants were biased in favor of white people when assessed against another race "demonstrates how powerful these social hierarchies are," she said.&nbsp;

Similar tests to those used in the experiment are available to take at https://implicit.harvard.edu/&nbsp;

Morehouse said that while the results could be uncomfortable for some, awareness was a first step that could help individuals break patterns of stereotyping.

The Quad group leaders – Australia, India, Japan and the United States – took a thinly veiled swipe at China's behaviour at their meeting in Hiroshima on Saturday, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit.

United States President Joe Biden and the three other leaders of the Quad group did not take China's name, however, the South Asian nation emerged as a clear target in the language of their joint statement which called for “peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific maritime domain”.

“We strongly oppose destabilising or unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion,” the statement added.

The group's diplomatic language further referred to the economic tactics of China which the nation allegedly uses to gain leverage over poor nations. The Quad group also attacked China's military expansion in the Pacific.

“We express serious concern at the militarisation of disputed features, the dangerous use of coastguard and maritime militia vessels, and efforts to disrupt other countries’ offshore resource exploitation activities,” the statement stated, as it clearly referred to the construction of bases by China on former offshore reefs and the harassment faced by non-Chinese ships in the disputed waters.

However, the meeting was cancelled after Biden changed his schedule citing his need to return to Washington from Japan on Sunday for negotiating the US debt ceiling with Republican opponents.

The group, in their statement, emphasised on the Quad’s support for improvements in infrastructure across the vast Asia-Pacific region while stating, in what appeared as another alleged dig at China, that they wished to assist such investments but would “not impose unsustainable debt burdens” on the recipients of assistance.

The Quad leaders highlighted various projects and called the “urgent need to support quality undersea cable networks in the Indo-Pacific, which are key to global growth and prosperity”.

The leaders announced a partnership which is aimed at drawing on the expertise of their countries in the specialist maritime cable sector.

Quad Meet: Australia, US, India and Japan take veiled swipe at China

A White House official on Friday said that "steady progress" has been made in talks over increasing the United States&nbsp;debt ceiling at a time when President Joe Biden is in Japan to attend the G7 summit.

The US government is hoping to hit the legal borrowing limit earliest by June 1, increasing the chances of the largest economy in the world&nbsp;to default on debt repayments for the first time in history.

A default on the $31.8 trillion debt of the United States would unleash turmoil for global markets if no agreement is finalised between Republicans and Democrats, who are asking for deep spending cuts before there is an increase in the debt limit.

Biden "requested and received an update this morning from his designated negotiating team" informing him that "steady progress is being made", the official stated.

"The president directed his team to continue pressing forward for a bipartisan agreement," the official added. "He remains confident that Congress will take necessary action to avoid default,” he further stated.

Top US Republican Kevin McCarthy on Thursday stated that he can see "the path" to reach a breakthrough in talks and finally avert a default, even though his party's hard right has signalled that they will not negotiate their spending-cut demands.

"We're not there - we haven't agreed to anything yet - but I see the path (where) we could come to an agreement," said the House speaker, in his most upbeat assessment yet made of such high-stakes standoff between Biden and Republicans in Congress.

"I think we have the structure now and everybody's working hard,” he added.

"We're on such a short timeline. It makes it almost harder. But there's one thing you know, for me, I never give up. I have the grit, the perseverance and we're gonna get it done,” McCarthy had further stated.

Earlier, Biden had said, “We're going to come together because there's no alternative. ‘Steady progress’ in talks on raising US debt limit, avoiding default: White House

At least four Nigerians were killed in an attack on a convoy of two United States&nbsp;government vehicles in Nigeria on Tuesday, US&nbsp;Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, adding that the attack did not appear to be directed at the US&nbsp;mission there.

In a statement on Wednesday, Blinken said the US&nbsp;mission and its Nigerian counterparts were working to ascertain the location and condition of those unaccounted for. In all, there were nine Nigerian nationals in the convoy, he said.

At least four Nigerians killed in attack on US convoy, Blinken says

The club dancers of Los Angeles, after days of late-night picketing in North Hollywood, are set to become United States' only unionised strippers.

The victory of dancers is likely to be finalised after a formal union vote and will mark the first time that strip club workers will be represented by the Actors Equity association, which is a century-old union for singers, stage actors and dancers.

The campaign of strippers featured colourful costumed protests and attracted the support of high-profile people. Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello and Amazon Union president Chris Smalls both showed up in solidarity.

Star Garden's 23-year-old dancer Charlie said, “The sacrifices we made were definitely sacrifices, but it was for something bigger than us.”

The dancers have been fighting for “a future where unionisation exists for strippers who want it. That’s bigger than struggling to pay rent.”

The campaign, which began in March 2022, highlighted the unsafe working conditions of dancers and their retaliatory firings if they spoke about the dangerous behaviour of customers.

<h2>'Dances of Star Garden absolute warriors'</h2>

Actors’ Equity, which has been representing more than 50,000 workers, has till now not organised strip club employees. However, the union stated that the concerns of strippers are similar to those of other performers, varying from wage theft to post-show security.

“Strippers are live entertainers. While some elements of their job are unique, they are essentially performance artists, and have a lot in common with other Equity members who dance for a living,” said Kate Shindle, the union president, in a statement.

Shindle termed the dancers of Star Garden as “absolute warriors throughout this long process”.

Along with concerns about dancer safety and sexual harassment, the union campaign was led by labour concerns which strippers face like any other worker, such as suffering workplace injuries which affect dancers' jobs and making health insurance essential.

“Just walking around in six- to eight-inch heels every night is a lot of wear and tear on your body,” Charlie, the Star Gardens dancer, stated.

The dancers faced legal battles for more than a year, which included the club announcing bankruptcy.

The owners of Star Garden and the union finalised a settlement on Tuesday which will permit the dancers to continue ahead with a union vote, and help the club in re-opening.

In a statement, Star Garden's attorney An Ruda said, “Star Garden is committed to negotiating in good faith with Actor’s Equity a first-of-its-kind collective bargaining agreement which is fair to all parties.”

“Star Garden decided to settle, as it has always been a fair and equal opportunity employer, that respects the rights of its employees,” Ruda added.

Los Angeles club dancers to become the only unionised strippers in US

US Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in favour of Google, Meta and Twitter, stating that the social media giants cannot be held responsible for posts carrying content supportive of terrorist groups such as Islamic State (ISIS). Two cases were filed by a US victim of the 2015 Paris attacks while the third case was brought by the family of a victim of a 2017 attack by ISIS group on an Istanbul nightclub. The justices noted that the cases against social media companies did not amount to a liable infraction.

<h2>Court refused to recommend changes to Section 230</h2>

The victims of the terrorist attacks who filed cases against social media companies were seeking changes to a law called Section 230, which gives online platforms blanket immunity from liabilities arising from third-party content on their sites. The immunity prevails even if the platform recommends offensive content to its users.&nbsp;

Section 230 became law in 1996 and was meant to uphold the freedom of speech in the United States. However, experts are increasingly crediting the law for the increase in hateful content on social media platforms.

<h2>Big relief to social media companies</h2>

The judgment on Thursday came as a big relief to social media companies. They believe that without the protective immunity from Section 230, the websites will be open to lawsuits for content posted by users. An association representing US tech companies said the decision was good news.

"The court correctly recognised the narrow posture of these cases and declined to rewrite a key tenet of US Internet law, preserving free expression online and a thriving digital economy,” said Matt Schruers, head of the Computer &amp; Communications Industry Association.

<h2>What’s the US Congress doing?</h2>

Congress is heavily divided on the issue, and it has failed to update the rules to combat advanced challenges. However, different US states have passed laws to hold TikTok, Meta, Twitter and YouTube liable for content that appears on their site.&nbsp;

The Biden administration last year urged the US Supreme Court to hold social media companies accountable for promoting harmful content and sided with a family seeking to sue Alphabet Inc.’s Google over a terrorist attack. United States President Joe Biden on Thursday arrived in Japan, where he greeted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida by saying, “When our countries stand together, we stand stronger”, which is a sign of how the national security and economic alliance between the two nations have grown.

The US president began his statement by noting that Kishida had stated during a January Washington visit that the countries are facing one of the “most complex” security environments in coming years. “I couldn’t agree with you more,” said Biden.

“We very much welcome that the co-operation has evolved in leaps and bounds,” Kishida said to Biden speaking about the relationship of Japan with the US in their meeting which was held ahead of the G7 summit that starts on Friday.

Hiroshima, the home city of the Kishida family, is hosting the gathering of G7 countries. With this, Hiroshima, where the first nuclear bomb was dropped by the United States in 1945 during World War II, carries newfound resonance.

The US, Japan and their allies have been working on strategies to deal with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war as well as have been discussing the increased cadence of Iran’s nuclear programme and North Korea’s ballistic missile tests.

Biden is taking part in the series of discussions while parallelly managing the issue of the debt limit in the United States. The president decided to cut short his trip, which was earlier supposed to be eight-day long so that he can return to Washington at the earliest and avoid any catastrophic default in June which could ripple the global economy.

A 77-year-old woman from the US state of Ohio married herself in a wedding ceremony surrounded by neighbours, friends and family. According to a report by Today.com on Tuesday (May 16), Dorothy "Dottie" Fideli, a resident of the O’Bannon Terrace Retirement Community in Goshen married herself on May 13. Fideli asked Rob Geiger, the property manager of her retirement home, to perform the ceremony. And as Fideli explained what she wanted to do, Geiger jumped at the chance to honour the 77-year-old who always brought joy to other people. “I said, you know what, I’ve done everything else. Why not? I’m going to marry myself,” Fideli told Today. On the wedding day, she wore a white dress with long sleeves with floral detailing, as well as a silver belt and a veil with an embellished headband. 'I was really nervous, but then...' Describing her feelings on the wedding day, Dorothy Fideli said she was nervous but then was really happy. When the 77-year-old first had the idea of marrying herself, she thought it might be “just one of my things that I normally do” to uplift other people in her retirement home. "I do some crazy things around here just to make people laugh. When I see them all down in the dumps, I go get one of my outfits on and dress up and come down, and they smile,” she told Today. During the wedding ceremony, Fideli held a white lily in her hand and used it as a metaphor for cultivating self-love. “I said, ‘Everybody takes this outside lily. And they live their life and they think they’re happy and everything’s going to be hunky-dory, but they don’t consider the inside, the little petals inside,” she said. Fidel got married once in 1965, but there's a catch Dorothy Fideli got married once in 1965 but never had a formal wedding. Fideli said she and her ex-husband exchanged vows at the justice of the peace and right after the ceremony, “he went to work and I went home.” “I wore a black dress, so I was doomed before I got started,” she added. The 77-year-old wished she could have a big wedding, but thought it was too late for her. But as the wedding happened, Fidel couldn't thank her daughter enough for making her dream come true. "This is the best thing that I’ve ever had, outside of having you kids. This is what I’ve always wanted and I’m so happy that you (the daughter) it to me," she further said. A heartwarming video of a dog rescued by a&nbsp;news crew surfaced on the internet which has won millions of hearts worldwide.

The news crew of ABC spotted the dog trapped underneath the debris of a damaged home in tornado-ravaged Texas.

ABC News sound technician Jim Gower heard the pooch's cries and quickly called for the animal rescue to help. While he waited, he found a nearby shovel and started digging a hole for the animal so that it could escape.&nbsp;

The terrified pup hesitated to exit the hole at first, however, the crew persuaded the pooch out of the wreckage with the help of a Slim Jim meat stick before the animal control arrived.

This came as the crew was setting up the equipment to capture the devastation caused by an EF-1 tornado in Laguna Heights, east of Brownsville, which claimed the life of at least one person.

ABC congratulated their team while social media users thanked the crew members for helping a voiceless animal in need.

According to officials, at least one person lost life after a tornado tore through the unincorporated Gulf Coast community in Texas on Saturday, causing damage to numerous structures and taking down power lines.

As per the New York Times report, a severe thunderstorm spawned a tornado that hit Laguna Heights, near South Padre Island and surrounding communities, such as Port Isabel, around 4 am on Saturday.

Officials confirmed that multiple structures sustained "extensive damage".&nbsp;

Port Isabel Police Chief Robert Lopez said 10 people were injured, with two of them in critical condition, the others had minor cuts and bruises, as per NYT.

Angelica Soria, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Brownsville, Texas, said officials found out in an initial damage assessment that a tornado was on the ground for five minutes. The damage was consistent with a tornado with wind speeds of 86-110 mph.

A shocking incident unfolded in the streets of Riverside, California, over the weekend, as a man was brutally attacked with a sword, resulting in the severing of his hand. The police earlier dismissed the report of the discovery of a detached hand as a movie prop, but later they were stunned to hear that someone in the area was seeking medical assistance for getting his hand sliced off with a sword.

The incident has left the local community in a state of shock and has raised concerns about the escalating violence against homeless individuals in American cities.

<h2>Police yet to apprehend the assailant</h2>

According to Officer Ryan Railsback, a spokesperson for the Riverside Police, the victim had been attacked by an unidentified person wielding a sword on Saturday night. Preliminary findings suggest that both the victim and the perpetrator were homeless and may have been acquainted with each other. The Riverside police's robbery-homicide unit is currently investigating the incident but has yet to apprehend the assailant.

<h2>The local community comes forward to support&nbsp;</h2>

The victim is well-known and respected within the community and has garnered immense support from those residing and working in the downtown area. “He’s a really nice guy, he’s one of our regulars,” said Nikki Hernandez, who works at a restaurant. “If someone were to upset him he would argue with them, but he would never get into a fight or altercation like that,” he said.

Police yet to apprehend the assailant According to Officer Ryan Railsback, a spokesperson for the Riverside Police, the victim had been attacked by an unidentified person wielding a sword on Saturday night. Preliminary findings suggest that both the victim and the perpetrator were homeless and may have been acquainted with each other. The Riverside police's robbery-homicide unit is currently investigating the incident but has yet to apprehend the assailant. The local community comes forward to support The victim is well-known and respected within the community and has garnered immense support from those residing and working in the downtown area. “He’s a really nice guy, he’s one of our regulars,” said Nikki Hernandez, who works at a restaurant. “If someone were to upset him he would argue with them, but he would never get into a fight or altercation like that,” he said. California police begin hunt for assailant who severed homeless man’s hand with sword

United States President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy held talks to discuss the "catastrophic" debt crisis, but the negotiations ended on Tuesday (May 16) after less than an hour, without any breakthrough.&nbsp;

The White House said Biden was "optimistic that there is a path to a responsible, bipartisan budget agreement if both sides negotiate in good faith." But McCarthy told reporters there was still "a lot of work to do" to break the high-stakes standoff with Biden over the borrowing limit.&nbsp;

"I did think this one was a little more productive... We've got a short timeframe here to try to find out how we could come to an agreement," McCarthy told reporters, as he said that Biden is attempting to achieve a debt ceiling agreement before June 1 in order to avert economic disaster.&nbsp;

According to McCarthy, Republican Congressman Garrett Graves will meet with White House counsellor to Biden, Steve Ricchetti, and Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young as part of efforts to resolve the debt ceiling standoff.&nbsp;

The Treasury has warned of dire implications if the country runs out of funds to pay its debts, which would prevent it from paying federal employees and precipitate a likely rise in interest rates, which would have ramifications for businesses, mortgages, and global markets.&nbsp;

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Monday that the nation could begin defaulting on its debts "potentially as early as June 1", while the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has forecast June 15. &nbsp;

According to the White House, Biden has asked his staff to "continue to meet daily on outstanding issues," and that he will consult with Republican leaders after returning from the G7 meetings.

Republicans have insisted on large expenditure cutbacks in exchange for their support for raising the debt ceiling, dismissing Democratic requests for a "clean" rise with no strings attached.&nbsp;

The president departs on Wednesday for a three-day G7 conference in Japan, but according to a source, Biden decided on Tuesday to miss subsequent stops in Papua New Guinea and Australia.&nbsp;

The White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said that Biden would depart for Japan on Wednesday as scheduled but a subsequent stop in Australia is being "reevaluated".

"We're working though, thinking through, the rest of the trip right now," Kirby said, further clarifying that "there's not been a cancellation as yet, but that could happen. We'll see where it goes..."&nbsp;

Biden 'optimistic', Kevin McCarthy says 'a lot of work to do' on debt ceiling talks

Anthony Albanese has stated that the Sydney Quad summit will not take place after US President Joe Biden cancelled his trip to Australia to deal with domestic&nbsp;issues.&nbsp;

Albanese was hoping that the meeting with the leaders of India and Japan may go forward with a senior US delegate early Wednesday morning, but the summit has now been&nbsp;cancelled.&nbsp;

Albanese stated that the presidents of Australia, the United States, India, and Japan will instead meet this weekend at the G7 in Japan, as reported by the Guardian.

“The Quad is an important body and we want to make sure that it occurs at leadership level and we’ll be having that discussion over the weekend,” he said.&nbsp;

While no meeting date has been set for the Japan gathering, Albanese stated that it was "appropriate that we talk."

The Quad is an informal grouping that advocates for an open Indo-Pacific. Beijing sees it as an attempt to counteract its rising regional influence.

Since its first senior official-level meeting in 2007, Japan, the United States, India, and Australia have used the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (the Quad) as a meeting format for senior officials to discuss regional security issues as well as the basis for a single naval exercise and a single tabletop exercise, as per the Centre for Strategic and International studies.&nbsp;

As per&nbsp;Asia Society Policy Institute senior scholar Richard Maude, who spoke to Reuters,&nbsp;the postponement of Biden's travel to Papua New Guinea, which would have been the first visit by an American president to an independent Pacific island nation, might jeopardise Washington's quest for regional dominance with Beijing.

An economic recession in the US soon? Well, the Wall Street believes that recession has already arrived.

US corporate earnings are experiencing what might become the worst prolonged drop in the last seven years. This comes at a time when the US economy teeters on the verge of disaster as the stalemate over hiking the debt limit continues. As the first quarter earnings season winds down, analysts predict that S&amp;P500 company profits fell 3.7 percent year-over-year.&nbsp;

Data provided by Bloomberg reveals that 78 percent of companies beat projections.But that is less spectacular than it seems because analysts lowered their expectations before the season began.

Importantly, it was corporate America's second consecutive quarter of fall in profit. The S&amp;P500 index has posted no gains since major Wall Street lenders kicked off the earnings season in mid-April. Bloomberg Intelligence predicts a further 7.3 percent drop in profit in April–June.

Analysts have further downgraded their estimates. They now expect higher rates and waning consumer demand to hurt profitability beyond the third quarter of this year. This shows a lengthier profit recession than during the Covid-19 pandemic.

During 2015–2016, when the US Federal Reserve launched its previous rate hike cycle, profits fell for more than three quarters.&nbsp;

On May 9, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sabotaged a suite of malicious software used by Russian spies. According to senior American law enforcement officials, FBI technical experts identified and disabled malware wielded by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) against an undisclosed number of American computers. The officials said that FSB officials behind the malware- known as Snake, were part of a notorious hacking group tracked by the private sector and known as "Turla." This sabotage by the FBI provided a glimpse of the digital tug-of-war between the United States and Russia. What is Snake? According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on May 9, the Snake malware is considered the most sophisticated cyber espionage tool designed and used by Center 16 of FSB for long-term intelligence collection on sensitive targets. The CISA said that to carry out operations using this tool, the FSB created a covert peer-to-peer (P2P) network of numerous Snake-infected computers around the world. "Many systems in this P2P network serve as relay nodes which route disguised operational traffic to and from Snake implants on the FSB’s ultimate targets. Snake’s custom communications protocols employ encryption and fragmentation for confidentiality and are designed to hamper detection and collection efforts," the CISA added. The agency said that it identified the Snake infrastructure in more than 50 countries across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, including the United States and Russia itself. The FSB started developing Snake as “Uroburos” in late 2003. The development of the initial versions of the implant appeared to be completed around early 2004, with cyber operations first conducted using the implant shortly thereafter. The malware's targets Though Snake has used infrastructure across all industries, its targeting is "purposeful and tactical in nature," according to the CISA. The FSB used Snake to collect sensitive intelligence from high-priority targets such as government networks, journalists and research facilities. Sharing an example, the CISA said that FSB actors used Snake to access and exfiltrate sensitive international relations documents, as well as other diplomatic communications, from a victim in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nation. Within the US, the Russian security agency victimised industries including education, small business and media organisations. Critical infrastructure sectors in the US including government facilities were also targeted. The people behind Snake As mentioned earlier, FSB officials behind Snake were part of the hacking group called Turla. On May 9, the US Justice Department said in a statement that for nearly 20 years, "this unit, referred to in court documents as Turla, used versions of Snake to steal sensitive documents from hundreds of computer systems in at least 50 countries, which have belonged to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member governments, journalists, and other targets of interest to the Russian Federation." After stealing these documents, Turla exfiltrated them through a covert network of unwitting Snake-compromised computers in the US and around the world. Operation MEDUSA The FBI-led Operation MEDUSA was behind the sabotage of the Snake malware. The US Justice Department said in its statement that MEDUSA disabled the malware on compromised computers through the use of an FBI-created tool called PERSEUS, which issued commands that caused the Snake malware to overwrite its vital components. "The FBI developed a tool named PERSEUS which establishes communication sessions with the Snake malware implant on a particular computer, and issues commands that causes the Snake implant to disable itself without affecting the host computer or legitimate applications on the computer," the statement said. The US had started investigating Snake and Snake-related malware tools for nearly two decades. "The US government has monitored FSB officers assigned to Turla conducting daily operations using Snake from a known FSB facility in Ryazan, Russia," the statement added. “The Justice Department, together with our international partners, has dismantled a global network of malware-infected computers that the Russian government has used for nearly two decades to conduct cyber-espionage, including against our NATO allies,” US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said on the sabotage. “We will continue to strengthen our collective defences against the Russian regime’s destabilizing efforts to undermine the security of the United States and our allies,” he added. A word of caution for victims The Justice Department pointed out that even though Operation MEDUSA disabled the Snake malware on compromised computers, victims should take additional steps to protect themselves from further harm. "The operation to disable Snake did not patch any vulnerabilities or search for or remove any additional malware or hacking tools that hacking groups may have placed on the victim," it said. "Turla frequently deploys a “keylogger” with Snake that Turla can use to steal account authentication credentials, such as usernames and passwords, from legitimate users," the department added and cautioned victims about being aware that the Russian hacking group could use these stolen credentials to fraudulently re-access compromised computers and other accounts. US&nbsp;Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday sounded the alarm on the urgent need for Congress to raise the government's debt ceiling, warning that failure could trigger an "economic catastrophe."

In a recent address to business executives in Washington DC, Yellen emphasised that defaulting on debt would have far-reaching implications that could impede&nbsp;the country's economic recovery from the COVID-19 epidemic.

"A default on our debt would produce an economic and financial catastrophe," Reuters quoted Yellen telling members of the&nbsp;Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.

Yellen, a former Federal Reserve chairperson, further stated that a default would raise borrowing costs in perpetuity and future investments would become significantly more expensive.

Arguing that&nbsp;raising or suspending the existing borrowing cap of $31.4 trillion is the US Congress'&nbsp;responsibility, she asked lawmakers&nbsp;to act immediately to avert potential economic and financial market disruptions.

Raising the debt ceiling and rift in Congress

Credit markets could deteriorate if the debt ceiling is not increased, making it harder for businesses to secure funding. Additionally, the government may be unable to issue timely payments to military families and seniors who rely on Social Security, causing financial hardships for vulnerable populations.

Raising the debt ceiling has been a divisive issue in the US Congress, with opposing views on how to proceed.

Kevin McCarthy, the Republican Speaker&nbsp;in the House of Representatives, recently suggested a plan that would combine $4.5 trillion in expenditure cuts with a $1.5 trillion rise in the debt limit. The White House under Democrat Joe Biden, however, believes that the two issues should not be linked, and the proposal is expected to be rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Financial markets have grown increasingly concerned about the deadlock, with the cost of insuring exposure to US debt reaching a decade high. Analysts have cautioned that the possibility of default is increasing, which could have serious consequences for global financial stability.

US President Biden to host India's PM Modi on June 22: White House

The United States aid agency (USAID) stated that the shipments of food, which were being sent to the war-torn Tigray region of Ethiopia, have been paused after they discovered that the aid was being illegally sold in the local market.

The announcement was made by USAID administrator Samantha Power in a statement on Wednesday stating that the food aid was intended “for the people of Tigray suffering under famine-like conditions”.

“We have made the difficult decision to pause all USAID-supported food assistance in the Tigray region until further notice,” said Power.

She further stated that the matter was investigated by USAID’s Office of the Inspector General and the halt was decided as the “best course of action” for the time.

No major return to fighting took place after a peace deal was signed by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Ethiopian government in November.

However, the issue of food security has remained unresolved even after a blockade was lifted by the government on the northern region which was imposed when the fighting broke out in 2020 so that a free flow of aid can take place.

The move by USAID comes days after it was reported by the Associated Press&nbsp;that the remaining aid deliveries were suspended by World Food Programme (WFP) after an internal investigation revealed the theft of food in the war-torn region, where 20 million people are in dire need of humanitarian support.

In a statement, Power on Wednesday said that the United States “has raised its concerns with officials from both the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray Interim Regional Administration”.

She stated that both the regional and federal authorities had expressed their willingness to help identify those responsible.

“USAID stands ready to restart paused food assistance only when strong oversight measures are in place and we are confident that assistance will reach the intended vulnerable populations,” Power said.

She further stated that other “vital assistance not implicated in the diversion scheme will continue, including life-saving nutritional supplements, safe drinking water, and support for agricultural activities and development”.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the government of Ethiopia and the southern-based Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) concluded the first round of peace talks without any concrete agreements.

The two sides, however, expressed their commitment to continue the talks.

US alleges illicit sale of food aid in Tigray, pauses shipments

The World Bank on Wednesday confirmed Indian-origin Ajay Banga as its next president. Banga has taken charge of the bank at a pivotal time as the development lender aims to address climate change in better ways.

"The Board looks forward to working with Banga on the World Bank Group Evolution process," wrote the bank in a statement published just after the board voted to approve his leadership which will continue for a five-year term. The US candidate, who was the only nominee for the job,&nbsp;will succeed David Malpass on June 2.&nbsp;

The bank further said that it is looking forward to working with Banga on "all the World Bank Group's ambitions and efforts aimed at tackling the toughest development challenges facing developing countries".&nbsp;

Malpass has been facing criticism over his stance on climate change. Banga, aged 63, was born into a Sikh family in India and holds US citizenship.

Previously, Banga headed the payments company Mastercard from 2010 and 2021. He was also part of the boards of Kraft Foods, American Red Cross and Dow Inc.

Speaking to reporters during his candidacy, Banga had said that he wanted to see increased private sector funding to manage financing for global problems.

"There is not enough money without the private sector," he stated, adding that an organisation like the World Bank should establish a system which can share risk and mobilise private funds for achieving its goals.

"These are all tools in the toolkit and I'm going to try and figure it out," he stated.&nbsp;

Last month, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that she was confident Banga has "the right experience and track record of bringing together governments, the private sector, and non-profits to deliver on our ambitious goals."

Banga will start his role when the world economy is going through a difficult phase with decreased global growth and increasing interest rates.&nbsp;

Banga will be heading the bank shortly after measures were endorsed by member countries to allow it a $50 billion lending boost in the next decade, which was a major objective of outgoing president Malpass.

As the 2024 United States Presidential elections approach, incumbent Joe Biden and his second-in-command Kamala Harris over the weekend met with the top 150 donors in Washington, DC, to develop a successful strategy to raise funds for their re-election campaign.&nbsp;

Leading Indian-American fundraiser, Ajay Jain Bhutoria was among the 150 donors the duo met.

Bhutoria's presence at the event limited to 150 donors nationwide as per PTI speaks of the growing influence and representation of the Indian-American community in US national politics.

He is also the Democratic Party deputy national finance chair. This role, as per PTI, also emphasises the importance of fundraising efforts and the role of donors in shaping the future of American politics.

The event marked the first in-person donor conference by President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris. Quoting people present at the conference, PTI reports that at the event, Democratic Party officials presented their campaign strategy and began their fundraising efforts. Reportedly, for this election cycle they've set the goal of USD 2 Billion — double the USD 1 billion raised last time.

However, this reception was not a fundraiser, said a participant. Instead, it marks an effort to bring into the fold untapped donors.

Speaking at the event, Biden highlighted the importance of donors and their contribution to preserving democracy. He also lambasted his opponent Donald Trump and his "MAGA Republicans."

Participants revealed to PTI that Biden appeared confident about securing another win.

"We have done a lot, but there's so much more to do. And with your help, I know we can do it. I really do. Just like we did in 2020."

"Remember 2020, when everyone had written us off? But you folks — you folks in this room, you know we could do it, and we did. You raised significant amounts of money to allow us to compete," said Biden, addressing the donors.

"We’re going to build an America that’s more fair, more just, more free.&nbsp;And we’re going to literally build a better world.&nbsp;And that fills me with optimism."&nbsp;

Reportedly, VP Kamala Harris spoke to the donors one-on-one and in her interactions, she highlighted the achievements of the Biden administration.

NBC News reported that "Harris has also been out pushing the Biden agenda, having recently delivered remarks about abortion rights in a speech at Howard University. She talked about her work on abortion issues, insulin and broadband access in her remarks on Friday."

Joe Biden, Kamala Harris woo donors for presidential election 2024 re-run

A man in the US, who faced an alleged scam of $40 in parking fees by a fake parking attendant while he came for a date, fatally shot the scammer before he returned for dinner nonchalantly in Houston, Texas.

As per a press release, the accused man has been identified by the government as 29-year-old Erick Aguirre. On Thursday, he appeared before the court to face murder charges over the death of 46-year-old Elliot Nix.

As per a report in CNN, Aguirre continued with his planned dinner date as he told his partner "everything is fine", after he allegedly shot dead Nix in the car parking near Rodeo Goat restaurant in Houston.

The Houston Police Department stated that on April 11, Aguirre and his date arrived at the parking during the evening and parked their car near the burger spot.

They were told by the fraud parking attendant that the parking would cost $20 each. Aguirre then paid the man $40. However, he was later informed by the restaurant staff that Nix did not work for them and was not responsible for the parking lot.
