US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday (Oct 31) that Russian President Vladimir Putin would succeed in his war against Ukraine if the United States halted support for Kyiv.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday (Oct 31) that Russian President Vladimir Putin would succeed in his war against Ukraine if the United States halted support for Kyiv. Addressing a Senate hearing on supplemental funding for national security priorities including Ukraine, Austin said, "I can guarantee you that without our support, Putin will be successful." "If we pull the rug out from under them now, Putin will only get stronger and he will be successful in doing what he wants to do in acquiring his neighbour's sovereign territory," he added. Also read: Putin blames Ukraine and the West for airport riot; claims US behind 'deadly chaos' in Middle East Since Russia began its offensive in Ukraine in February last year, the US has been the biggest donor of military aid for Kyiv committing some $43.9 billion. However, several Republicans have opposed this 'Putin taking advantage of Israel-Hamas war to distract US' US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was a part of the Senate hearing, said on Tuesday that Putin was very much trying to take advantage of the Israel-Hamas war "in the hopes that it will distract us... and that it will result in the United States pulling back its resources from Ukraine." Blinken said a halt to US aid for Ukraine could encourage other countries to follow suit. "This is an instance where we've seen very significant burden-sharing that would almost certainly go away if we go away," he said. "The message it would send... to each and every one of these countries is that the United States is abandoning ship -- well, we may as well do, too," the secretary of state added. Israel's retaliatory offensive following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7 has killed more than 8,500 people in the Gaza Strip. On the Israeli side, over 1,400 people have been killed by Hamas. Antony Blinken also said on Tuesday the Palestinian Authority should retake control of the Gaza Strip from Hamas, with international players potentially filling a role in the interim. At some point, what would make the most sense would be for an effective and revitalized Palestinian Authority to have governance and ultimately security responsibility for Gaza," he said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday (Oct 31) warned against expecting rapid success in the country’s counteroffensive which aims to reclaim occupied land from Russia saying that Moscow’s forces are gearing up for a fresh wave of attacks in different parts of the frontline.

The remarks came as Zelensky has sought to rally his troops amid Kyiv’s gruelling months-long offensive. Meanwhile, several UN agencies addressed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

The UN human rights office (OCHA) said it has formally verified the death of 9,900 civilians in Ukraine after strikes on homes, schools, fields and markets, since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, adding that “the actual number is certainly higher.”

Don’t expect instant success: Zelensky

“We live in a world that gets used to success too quickly. When the full-scale invasion began, many people around the world did not believe that Ukraine would survive,” said the Ukrainian president in his nightly address.

“Glory to all those who do not retreat, who do not burn out, who believe in Ukraine just as they did on February 24, and who have been fighting unwaveringly.”

The Ukrainian offensive began in June and since then Kyiv has not reported much success on its vast frontline in the east and south, sparking criticism and impatience among some of the country’s allies in the West.

Zelensky also said that his troops have succeeded in diminishing Russia’s military strength in the Black Sea and that more support from his allies could lead to an ultimate Ukrainian victory over Russia.

“When we ensure even more security to the Black Sea, Russia will lose any ability to dominate in this area and expand its malign influence to other countries,” said the Ukrainian president. Russia often uses its fleet in the Black Sea to launch long-range strikes on Ukraine.

Sectors considered engulfed by the fiercest fighting in the east and northeast, include Avdiivka and Kupiansk – where Russia has been on the offensive in recent weeks – said Zelensky following a meeting with senior commanders.

Humanitarian situation in Ukraine

Ramesh Rajasingham, director of coordination from the OCHA told the UNSC, that Ukrainian civilians are suffering “horrendous humanitarian consequences” from the Russian strikes.

Around 18 million Ukrainians – over 40 per cent of Ukraine’s population, require some form of humanitarian assistance, said Rajasingham, adding that as winter approaches, these “needs will be magnified.”

Humanitarian organisations are helping people carry out household repairs and ensuring that water and heating systems are functional ahead of freezing temperatures, said the UN official.

The Russian military had been accused of methodically targeting Ukraine’s power and other critical infrastructure with missiles and drones during the last winter season.

World Health Organization (WHO) has verified over 1,300 attacks on healthcare since the beginning of the invasion – more than 55 per cent of all attacks worldwide during the same period, said the official from OCHA.

More than 100 healthcare workers and patients have been killed since the beginning of September, according to the UN.

United States Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood, citing UN estimates, said Russian attacks have reduced Ukraine’s power generation to roughly half its pre-war capacity. One day in September, Russia launched some 44 missiles at energy facilities in six Ukrainian regions, said Wood.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia rejected claims that Russian airstrikes are hitting “civilian objects” and accused the Kyiv government of making up “lies about Russia” and blaming Moscow for “tragedies” in Ukraine to get more funding from the West.

Russia-Ukraine war: Will battle for Bakhmut decide Ukraine war? | WION Newspoint

Kyiv military officials said on Monday that Russia has bulked up its forces around the devastated city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine and has switched its troops from defence to offence, but Ukraine has been preparing to repel the attacks.

Russia captured Bakhmut, the theatre of some of the bloodiest fighting of the 20-month-old war, in May. Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in June aimed at retaking occupied land in the country's south and east, including Bakhmut.

"In the Bakhmut area, the enemy has significantly strengthened its grouping and switched from defence to active actions," General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's commander of ground forces, wrote on Telegram.

Volodymyr Fityo, head of communications for Ukraine's ground forces command, said Russian forces had been preparing since early this month to retake positions around Bakhmut lost during the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

"We saw this, the intelligence reported everything. We had been preparing, strengthening our defensive positions, engineering fortifications and pulling up reserves," Fityo told Reuters by telephone. "This does not come as a surprise for us."

Both men said Russian forces were particularly active near the Ukrainian-held town of Kupiansk in the northeast, where Fityo said Russia had numerical superiority.

Reuters could not independently verify accounts on the battlefield.

In its nightly report, the Ukrainian General Staff said Kyiv's forces remained on the offensive near Bakhmut.

"The enemy unsuccessfully tried to restore lost positions near Klishchiivka", it said, referring to a village south of Bakhmut recaptured by Ukraine in September.

Russian troops also tried to advance in Synkivka, north of Kupiansk, but made no headway, it added.

Russia has also been concentrating much of its efforts in recent weeks on a bid to encircle and capture Avdiivka, a strategic town southwest of Bakhmut.

With no end in sight to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, a third set of peace talks began in Malta on Saturday (Oct 29), a gathering which saw the presence of over 60 national security advisers, media reports said. Evidently, Moscow was absent from the talks and even went on to criticise it.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a statement, highlighted the participation of 66 countries as evidence that his Peace Formula which he proposed last year has since gone "global." Notably, these talks come in the wake of previous peace talk gatherings in Jeddah and Copenhagen. The Ukrainian delegation is now aspiring to ultimately convene a summit involving heads of state.

Zelensky also called for the plan's joint implementation to reflect "not a particular national position, but the position of people, of all mankind."

"We shall prepare a joint action plan and then submit it to the Global Peace Summit – at the level of leaders – to approve and implement it for the sake of peace, for the sake of the protection of every nation from wars. And let this result be our common legacy for humanity!" he said.

Russia vs Ukraine: Peace talks open in Malta as Zelensky says his 10-point plan has gone 'global'

The Russian army, which has been fighting to gain control of the embattled city of Avdiivka, in eastern Ukraine have most probably faced some worst casualty rates this year, as they have faced losses of at least 4,000 troops, as per reports.

In a call held with US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday (Oct 28), Ukraine Defence Minister Rustem Umerov spoke about the staggering death tally of the Russian army in Avdiivka, as per a Telegram post by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.

The defence ministry of the United Kingdom stated eight brigades had been deployed by Moscow in its campaign for Avdiivka, which is home to a sprawling coke plant and is located roughly 16 miles from Donetsk, which has been occupied by Russia. However, those forces have “likely suffered some of Russia’s highest casualty rates of 2023 so far”.

In its Saturday battlefield report, the Ukrainian General Staff stated that Russian forces were making attempts to encircle Avdiivka, however, Kyiv has continued to repel the Russian troops strongly. “The Ukrainian soldiers are standing their ground, inflicting major losses on the enemy,” it stated.

The assault was launched by Russia on the embattled Donetsk in mid-October as Ukrainian forces were slammed with repeated artillery assaults along with multiple attacks by armoured vehicles and troops, as per the local and military authorities in Ukraine.

Moscow lost at least a brigade: Zelensky

On Friday, Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky stated that in the offensive push of Russia for Avdiivka, Moscow lost “at least a brigade”, which has different sizes but can include as many as 8,000 troops.

The assault was launched by Russia on the embattled Donetsk in mid-October as Ukrainian forces were slammed with repeated artillery assaults along with multiple attacks by armoured vehicles and troops, as per the local and military authorities in Ukraine. Moscow lost at least a brigade: Zelensky On Friday, Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky stated that in the offensive push of Russia for Avdiivka, Moscow lost “at least a brigade”, which has different sizes but can include as many as 8,000 troops. “The invaders made several attempts to surround Avdiivka, but each time our soldiers stopped them and threw them back, causing painful losses,” stated Zelensky. At least 8 injured in Russian strike on Ukraine’s Kherson, dozens of buildings damaged

The Ukraine war has started to boost defense contractors' revenues, as the US Government restocks supplies shipped to Ukraine and European countries arm themselves with an eye on Moscow.

Ukraine war: Defence firms earn big

Russia is executing soldiers who do not follow orders related to the war with Ukraine, the White House said on Thursday (Oct 26) adding that Moscow’s forces are suffering “significant” losses of armour and personnel. Meanwhile, the United States has also announced a new $150 million military assistance package for Ukraine.

Is Russia ‘executing soldiers’?

“We have information that the Russian military has been actually executing soldiers who are refusing to follow orders,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters during a briefing.

He added, “We also have information that Russian commanders are threatening to execute entire units if they seek to retreat from Ukrainian artillery fire.”

However, the White House official did not give any further details about the alleged executions or how the United States had obtained the information.

This comes as Russia in the past weeks has ramped up attacks in the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka in the eastern Donetsk region and the northeastern city of Kupyansk, in what is being viewed as a new offensive by the Russian forces in a bid to move the front line forward before winter.

The White House official also said that Moscow has witnessed “significant losses” in the new offensive, losing at least 125 armoured vehicles and “thousands” of casualties.

“The Russian military appears to be using what we would call human wave tactics,” said Kirby, adding that it is “unsurprising that Russian forces are suffering from poor morale,” he added.

Washington, on Thursday also announced a new military aid package for Ukraine which includes anti-tank weapons, air defence missiles, night vision devices, demolition munitions and cold weather gear.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Washington is wading deeper into the conflict and making a mistake by providing Kyiv with the missiles which, according to him, would not alter the battlefield situation and could be repelled.

Russia is ‘executing soldiers’ who are refusing orders in Ukraine, says White House

Russia has been able to increase its missile production beyond prewar levels by eluding Western sanctions and export regulations. Officials from the United States, Europe, and Ukraine claim that this makes Ukraine particularly open to more intense strikes in the upcoming months.

Russia-Ukraine War | European firms helping Russia produce dagger missiles: Report

Social media platforms are abuzz with the circulation of a Ukrainian TV report that alleges foreign mercenaries, once engaged in the conflict against Russia in Ukraine, are reportedly diverting their attention to the Gaza Strip to fight against Hamas. This unexpected change in the narrative has sparked a mixture of concerns and suspicions across online communities.

Amid this alleged shift in focus, Ukrainian authorities have expressed growing apprehension. The evolving Israeli-Palestinian conflict seems to be diverting global assistance and attention from the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Some pro-Russian Telegram accounts are highlighting this development, prompting concern among the Ukrainian leadership.

What does it mean for Ukrainian armed forces?

Speculations have arisen about the potential impact on the morale of the Ukrainian Armed Forces as foreign fighters, previously supporting their cause, switch their allegiance to participate in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This leaves us pondering whether the West is prepared to abandon Ukraine and allocate its resources to a new Middle Eastern conflict.

Misinformation and doubts

However, doubts surround the authenticity of the TV report. Firstly, the report lacks a TV channel logo and the name of the journalist responsible for the coverage.

Additionally, the audio in the interviews remains inaudible. Crucially, the visuals in the report, although striking, fail to substantiate the claim that foreign troops have relocated from Ukraine to Israel or that NATO allies have dispatched troops to Ukraine.

An investigative reverse image search reveals that the original news report dates back to October 9, courtesy of CBS, focusing on Israel's preparations for a ground invasion of Gaza following a significant Hamas attack.

Notably, there is no mention of foreign mercenaries leaving Ukraine in the CBS report, indicating that the viral video has been manipulated by propagandists who added their own voiceover.

While there have indeed been foreign fighters involved with the Ukrainian military, such as the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, the numbers have fluctuated. In March 2022, the Kyiv Minister of Foreign Affairs reported a surge in foreign volunteer fighter applications, reaching as high as 20,000 from 52 countries.

However, there is a lack of official updates on the number of foreign legion fighters currently stationed in Ukraine. According to various media reports, the estimate has dwindled to approximately 1,500 to 2,000 fighters, most of whom serve in three specific battalions within the International Legion.

Ukraine's positions around the frontline city of Avdiivka, in the eastern Donetsk region, are "protected", President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his evening address Sunday.

The city has been the centre of intense fighting in recent weeks as each side struggles to advance along the frontlines. Ukraine's general staff said on Friday that Russia had stepped up its military assault on Avdiivka in an ongoing bid to encircle and capture it.

"The Avdiivka and Maryinka directions are particularly tough," Zelensky said. "Numerous attacks by Russians. But our positions are protected."

Avdiivka has been a symbol of Ukrainian resistance since 2014, after it briefly fell to Russian-backed separatists.

Ukraine's positions at Avdiivka still 'protected': Zelensky

An investigation by the United Nations has further discovered evidence which proves that Russian forces committed “indiscriminate attacks” and war crimes while carrying out an invasion of Ukraine, which included deportation of children to Moscow and rape.

“The collected evidence further shows that Russian authorities have committed the war crimes of willful killing, torture, rape and other sexual violence, and the deportation of children to the Russian Federation,” stated a United Nations Commission of inquiry on Ukraine, in its report submitted to the UN general assembly.

“The commission has recently documented attacks that affected civilian objects, such as residential buildings, a railway station, shops, and a warehouse for civilian use, leading to numerous casualties,” the inquiry added.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky along with top commanders visited Kherson's southern region where the Ukrainian troops were praised for defending Avdiivka and Kupiansk, two places where attacks have been intensified by Russia.

“Thanks to all our boys, who powerfully hold the defence and destroy the occupier day after day,” said Zelensky, in a video shared on the Telegram messaging app. “These days, the Russian losses are really staggering, and it is precisely losses by the occupier that Ukraine needs,” he added.

In October, a surprise offensive was launched by Russia on the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka which as per reports resulted in serious losses for the forces of Moscow.

UN discovers more evidence which proves Russia's 'war crimes' in Ukraine

Ukrainian officials stated that six people were killed and 14 others were injured in a Russian missile attack which was carried out on a postal distribution centre in Kharkiv, the war-devastated northeastern Ukrainian city, said officials from Ukraine.

"Russian missiles hit the Nova Poshta centre - an ordinary civilian object," stated Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenksy, on the Telegram messaging app.

A video was posted by him which showed a building with windows in ruins after the blast and the construction material strewn around, with red trucks, which had Nova Poshta written on them in Ukrainian, standing in front of it.

Governor of the Kharkiv region, which has the city of Kharkiv as its administrative centre, Oleh Synehubov said that many injured people were admitted to hospital in serious condition.

The people killed and injured were working for the postal centre, said Synehubov, taking to Telegram. The police stated that the workers did not get enough time to hide in the shelter, because the siren went off a second before the impact.

The two sides have always denied targeting civilians in the war which started with Russia's invasion of its neighbour in February 2022.

Meanwhile, Russian forces have been facing resistance by Ukraine further south in the east as Moscow tried to gain control over more territories amid a slow counteroffensive of Kyiv, which has continued for months.

Moscow's drive to capture Avdiivka faced fierce resistance on Saturday, said Ukraine's military, as the fortifications were bolstered by defences. "The enemy is becoming more active, but is incurring heavy losses," said General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukraine's troops in the south, on Telegram.

The United States President Joe Biden, on Friday (Oct 20), requested Congress for a whopping $105 billion security package including funds for Ukraine and Israel.

As per news agency AFP reports, Biden asked $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel.

"The world is watching and the American people rightly expect their leaders to come together and deliver on these priorities," White House Office of Management and Budget director Shalanda Young said in a letter to Congress.

"I urge Congress to address them as part of a comprehensive, bipartisan agreement in the weeks ahead."

Biden's request comes days after he visited Tel Aviv and vowed solidarity after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel and took the country and the world by surprise.

A day before, the US president also directly linked the Hamas attack on Israel and Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

While delivering his speech at the Oval Office, he argued that a total of $105.85 billion, including $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel, would secure US interests for generations to come.

Biden's massive security package also includes $7 billion for resisting China and bolstering allies in the Asia-Pacific region, and over $9 billion for humanitarian assistance for Gaza, Ukraine and Israel.

However, the huge funding ask is an attempt to strengthen weakening aid for Ukraine by connecting it with funding for Israel, which has bipartisan support.

There is significant backing in Congress for Ukraine, including among major Republicans in the Senate, where the Democrats hold the majority.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer promised quick action in the upper house.

"Senate Democrats will move expeditiously on this request, and we hope that our Republican colleagues across the aisle will join us to pass this much-needed funding," he said in a statement.

"This legislation is too important to wait for the House to settle their chaos."

US President Joe Biden requests Congress for $105 bln security package, including funds for Ukraine and Israel

President Vladimir Putin visited the headquarters in Rostov-on-Don overseeing the Ukraine offensive, said the Kremlin on Friday (Oct 20). Meanwhile, Ukraine has reported that its troops are facing a new Russian onslaught in the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, which has recently witnessed a rise in attacks by Moscow.

Putin’s visit to military HQ

According to Russian state television, Putin went to the military headquarters to hear a report on the progress of operations in Ukraine.

It showed the chief of the general staff and the commander of the war in Ukraine, General Valery Gerasimov, telling Putin that the troops are “carrying out their tasks in line with the operation plan,” reported Reuters.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin, in a statement on Friday addressing the visit, said the Russian president had visited the military headquarters “on his way back from Perm,” a city where he had been the day before.

The meeting on Friday also came a day after Ukraine said that had used US-supplied ATACMS long-range missiles for the first time in the 604-day conflict.

Putin has previously said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had “completely failed,” adding that Kyiv’s Western backers were less hawkish than before.

“As for the counteroffensive, which is allegedly stalling, it has failed completely,” said the Russian president in a video posted by Kremlin journalist Pavel Zarubin, last week.

When asked about the battle for Avdiivka, Putin said that the “opposing side is preparing new active offensive operations. We see it and we know it.”

Russia ramps up attacks in Avdiivka: Ukraine

In an update, on Friday Ukraine’s general staff said Russian troops have ramped up attacks in eastern Ukraine in what was described as an ongoing bid to encircle and capture Avdiivka.

“The enemy has resumed offensive actions and does not stop trying to surround Avdiivka,” said Ukrainian general staff during a briefing. The frontline city in the eastern Donetsk region has become the new centre of fighting as both sides struggle to make gains.

Avdiivka is around 15 kilometres away from the Russian-held city of Donetsk, the capital of the Donetsk region which Moscow annexed last year in September.

Ukrainian General Valery Zaluzhnyi, in a video posted on Telegram, appeared to be talking with officers in Avdiivka and in Kupiansk, a town further north.

“The enemy is actively bringing in assault units and large amounts of armoured equipment and using aircraft and artillery,” said Zaluzhniy, on Thursday in a statement along with the video.

Oleksandr Shtupun, a spokesperson for the southern group of Ukrainian forces, told national television there was constant pressure on Avdiivka. “They (Russian forces) regrouped and launched new assaults there,” said Shtupun.

However, Reuters has reported that while Avdiivka witnessed fierce attacks by Russian forces last week, the shelling had tapered off in the last few days.

Speaking about Kupiansk, which was recaptured by Ukrainian troops late last year, Zaluzhniy said Ukrainian forces were “maintaining their defence in the most difficult of conditions” around the city.
