Russia has reportedly withdrawn the bulk of its Black Sea Fleet from its main naval base in Crimea. Well according to a Wall Street Journal report three attacked submarines and two frigates have been withdrawn to other ports in Russia and Crimea.

<h2><strong>WTO’s global trade growth forecast</strong></h2>

<p>WTO has given a number of factors which have cast a shadow over its outlook. According to the Geneva-based trade body, merchandise trade volumes would increase by just 0.8 per cent in 2023 which is less than half of its 1.7 per cent estimate back in April.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the 164-member trade body, for 2024 estimates that the goods trade growth would pick up to 3.3 per cent which is just 0.1 per cent higher than its previous estimate in April.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The WTO also expects the real-world GDP to increase by 2.6 per cent at market exchange rates this year and 2.5 per cent in 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the WTO, the trade slowdown was broad-based and involved a larger number of countries and goods – particularly iron and steel; office and telecoms equipment; textiles and clothing. While cars were a notable exception witnessing a rise in sales this year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UN trade body also reiterated its warning that they have observed some trade fragmentation linked to global tensions but did not see any evidence of a broader de-globalisation that could threaten its forecast for the next year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The data suggest that goods continue to be produced through complex supply chains, but that the extent of these chains may have reached their high-water mark,” said the WTO. The UN trade body also said that it was immediately clear if the recent decline was due to geopolitical tensions or the general economic slowdown.</p>

<p>“The projected slowdown in trade for 2023 is cause for concern, because of the adverse implications for the living standards of people around the world,” said WTO director-general, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, adding that global economic fragmentation would only make these challenges worse.</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine’s legal dispute at WTO</strong></h2>

<p>Kyiv said its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ukraine-files-lawsuit-against-poland-hungary-and-slovakia-over-grain-import-bans-637289">lawsuits filed</a> against its neighbouring EU members – Poland, Slovakia and Hungary – over their bans on Ukrainian grain is “on hold”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes after the war-torn country’s trade representative Taras Kachka, as per news agency Interfax Ukraine said, “We see that this problem will be eliminated in the coming weeks and months.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Ukrainian official also clarified that they are “not in a dispute” since they have not “formalised a working body to conduct a dispute,” adding that it is important to find a “constructive solution within the whole EU”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Poland since welcomed Ukraine’s move and said that pausing of a complaint before the WTO is a “a necessary step”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller told the PAP agency, “We look forward to further constructive actions by Ukraine to develop a suitable relationship on agricultural issues.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Historic’ gathering in Kyiv</strong></h2>

<p>The US Congress recently passed an emergency bill, to stop the government from shutting down, which excluded aid to Ukraine. However, Kyiv has said that they have been assured by the US officials that their support for Ukraine will continue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We don’t feel that the US support has been shattered...because the United States understands that what is at stake in Ukraine is much bigger than just Ukraine,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/we-will-not-walk-away-biden-pledges-support-to-ukraine-after-congress-pauses-war-time-aid-641627">Joe Biden </a>said Republicans had pledged to provide Ukraine aid through a separate vote and assured that American support could not be interrupted “under any circumstances.”</p>

<p>Speaking about the election victory of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/why-robert-ficos-win-in-slovakia-is-good-news-for-vladimir-putin-during-ukraine-war-641770">pro-Russian Robert Fico</a> in Slovakia, Kuleba said that it was “too early to judge” the impact of politics there.</p>

<p>This comes a day after Fico, following his win, said that the EU and NATO member nation is ready to help Ukraine in a “humanitarian way” but has rejected the prospect of providing any further military aid to Kyiv.</p>

<p>Kuleba also told Borrell that the Kremlin was investing “huge resources” to stir disunity among its allies and urged them to stand firm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s greatest expectation is precisely that the West and the world will tire of standing on the side of Ukraine in this war,” said the Ukrainian official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said that their being in Kyiv is a signal to Russia indicating the bloc’s determination to support Ukraine over the long term and “until it can win. It is also a message to Russia that it should not count on our weariness.”</p>

<p>Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for measures like air defence and guaranteed energy supplies to prepare Ukraine for winter after Russia bombed energy infrastructure last year, saying, “We must prevent this together with everything we have, as far as possible.”</p>

<h2><strong>Russia on Western ‘fatigue’ over Ukraine war</strong></h2>

<p>Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the US congressional vote was a sign of increasing divisions in the West over the war, but expects Americans to continue support calling it a “temporary phenomenon.”</p>

<p>“But we have repeatedly said before that according to our forecasts fatigue from this conflict, fatigue from the completely absurd sponsorship of the Kyiv regime, will grow in various countries, including the United States,” said Peskov.<br />

<p>The deal that was passed by Congress, on Saturday (Sep 30), to avoid a US government shutdown, contained no new war-time aid for Ukraine as part of a compromise between Republicans and Democrats.</p>

<p>Democrat Biden&nbsp;lambasted Republicans and pressed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to sidestep another shutdown spectacle when the 45-day stopgap deal, agreed on Saturday, runs out.</p>

<p>"I'm sick and tired of the brinksmanship," Biden said, speaking from the Roosevelt Room at the White House.</p>

<p>"The brinksmanship has to end. There shouldn't be another crisis."</p>

<p>UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Sunday (Oct 1) shot down the plan by British defence minister Grant Shapps who said that the government of Britain will be deploying military instructors in Ukraine, saying that it is not for the “here and now”.</p>

<p>Sunak said he wanted to be "absolutely clear" about the situation after "some misreporting" and said that Britain has been training Ukrainian citizens and soldiers for a long time within the UK.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"What the Defence Secretary was saying was that it might well be possible one day in the future for us to do some of that training in Ukraine," said Sunak.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, "But that's something for the long term, not the here and now, there are no British soldiers that will be sent to fight in the current conflict; that's not what's happening. What we are doing is training Ukrainians; we're doing that here in the UK."</p>

A five-week military training course was provided by Britain to nearly 20,000 Ukrainians in the past year, and the country now aims to train a similar number in days ahead.</p>

<p>While speaking to the Sunday Telegraph newspaper in an interview, Shapps said that they can provide military training within Ukraine after holding a discussion with British military chiefs on Friday (Sep 29).<br />

"I was talking today about eventually getting the training brought closer and actually into Ukraine as well. Particularly in the west of the country, I think the opportunity now is to bring more things 'in the country'," he said.</p>

<p>On Saturday (Sep 30), Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky that he wished to turn Kyiv's defence industry into a "large military hub" by entering into a partnership with Western weapons manufacturers which can increase arms supplies for a counteroffensive of Ukraine against Russia.<br />

On September 1,&nbsp;Sunak appointed Shapps as defence minister after his predecessor Ben Wallace resigned.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, specialists are also set to arrive in Ukraine in the days ahead to make plans to establish of production of military equipment which includes air defences, the Ukrainian president's chief of staff stated earlier.</p>

<p>Russian officials on Sunday (Oct 1) reported a wave of attacks by Ukrainian drones and shelling which left three people injured and forced an airport to divert flights, reported news agency AFP. Russia also claims to have shot down six Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and two Ukrainian missiles over Crimea.</p>

<p>The Russian air defence system shot down a Ukrainian drone in the southern Krasnodar region, on the Black Sea coast, at around 0500 GMT, said Moscow’s defence ministry, as per Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, it also claimed to have shot down three drones over the western Smolensk region, west of Moscow, around 0600 GMT and two more over the region around an hour later.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“An attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack with two operational-tactical Grom-2 missiles was thwarted,” said the Russian defence ministry in a statement, adding that missiles were shot down over the Dzhankoi region.</p>

<p>The Russian defence ministry on Sunday also said that the country’s air defences had intercepted five United States-made HIMARS shells, an air-launched JDAM bomb and 37 Ukrainian drones over Ukrainian territory in the last 24 hours.</p>

<p>Russia said those interceptions had occurred on the territory where Moscow is fighting what it calls a “special military operation”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sergei Aksyonov, the Russia-installed head of Crimea, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014, said that there were no casualties due to the reported attacks.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Temporary flight restriction’ in Russia</strong></h2>

<p>The international airport in the Russian city of Sochi, on the Black Sea coast, delayed 13 flights and cancelled one, following the attack, according to the British newspaper Daily Express.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“On the morning of 1 October, Sochi airport imposed a temporary flight restriction. Six flights were diverted to alternate aerodromes,” said Sochi International Airport in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AFP also reported a brief closure of the Crimea bridge, which connects the Moscow-annexed peninsula to the Russian mainland, on Sunday, but the reason was not immediately known.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine shoots down 16 of 30 Russian drones</strong></h2>

<p>Ukrainian Air Forces, on Sunday (Oct 1) claimed to have shot down 16 out of around 30 drones that Russia launched on Ukraine's territory overnight. The drones were launched from the southern, southeastern and northern directions, said the Ukrainian forces, on Telegram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Officials also reported an attack in the central Ukrainian Cherkasy region, where one person was reportedly injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“At night, the enemy massively attacked our Cherkasy region with attack drones. Unfortunately, there were hits on industrial infrastructure in (the city of) Uman,” said Cherkasy Governor Ihor Taburets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “As a result, fires broke out in warehouses. In particular, where grain was stored.” Taburets also said that one person was injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a statement by the Ukrainian presidential office also reported damage to civilian infrastructure and warehouses in southern Mykolaiv region and eastern Dnipropetrovsk region.&nbsp;</p>
