<p>However, to begin such a negotiation would require unanimous backing of all 27 countries in the bloc. With the Hungarian PM seemingly miffed by Ukraine, it looks highly unlikely that Kyiv would have smooth sailing on the issue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Budapest has already shown that it can use its decisive vote to lengthen proceedings. Sweden has been unable to become a NATO member for over a year due to Orban's unwillingness to ratify the move.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, met with his close ally, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Friday (September 22), and thanked him for his constant support to Kyiv.</p>

<p>Zelensky, who is on his tour to strengthen international backing for his country's struggle to repel a fierce Russian invasion, landed in the capital city of Ottawa late on Thursday (September 21).</p>

<p>Canada, which is a staunch supporter of Kyiv and also home to the world's second-largest Ukrainian diaspora, is set to announce that it is sending more weapons to Ukraine during Zelensky's visit, as per a government official.</p>

<p>Ahead of a bilateral meeting in the Canadian PM's office, Trudeau told Zelensky the visit was "an opportunity for Canadians to express directly to Volodymyr and through him to the Ukrainian people how strongly and unequivocally we stand with Ukraine".</p>

<p>In return, Zelensky said he had "a lot of warm words and thanks" from Ukraine for the military and humanitarian aid Canada had supplied.</p>

<p>Zelensky is scheduled to address parliament in Ottawa at 1 p.m. ET (1700 GMT) and then hold a news conference with Trudeau at 2:45 p.m. ET (1845 GMT) before flying to Toronto to meet business leaders and then address a rally.</p>

<p>Zelensky, during his visit to parliament, thanked Ottawa for its constant support to Canada since the Russian invasion.</p>

<p>"Thank you for your support. You've been with us from the first days of the full-scale war" and "I hope that you stay with us to our victory," Zelensky said after chatting with a senator of Ukrainian descent who came wearing her grandmother's traditional garb.</p>

<p>Speaking at the Oval Office at the start of talks, Biden said the US remains committed to providing support in Kyiv’s efforts to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.</p>

<p>"We're supporting a just and lasting peace, one that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Biden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zelensky returned the favour by saying: "We greatly appreciate the assistance provided by the United States to combat Russian terror, really terror."</p>

<p>Afterwards, Biden formally announced a military aid package worth $325 million that includes air defence systems and the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155-millimeter Howitzer cannon. Additionally, the president informed that the first US M1 Abrams tanks will arrive in Ukraine "next week".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Next week, the first US Abrams tanks will be delivered in Ukraine," Biden said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The army of Ukraine crossed the Russian lines in southern Ukraine, said the general who is leading the counteroffensive while speaking to the US media this weekend amid the latest claims made by Ukraine that it is making progress in the Zaporizhzhia area.<br />

The counteroffensive was launched by Ukraine to take back territory from Russian forces in June.<br />
<br />
The progress of the Ukrainian army has been slower than expected because of the heavily mined territory, however, in recent weeks Kyiv reported making strategic advances in the Zaporizhzhia region.<br />

"On the left flank (near the village of Verbove) we have a breakthrough and we continue to advance further," said General Oleksandr Tarnavskiy, while speaking to CNN.<br />

He further acknowledged that the army's advance has been slower than what was hoped by Ukraine.</p>

However, he stated that it is important "not to lose this initiative". A strategic victory was declared by Kyiv last month when it successfully recaptured the southern village of Robotyne.<br />

Tarnavskiy stated that the counteroffensive's major breakthrough will be when Kyiv recaptures the city of Tokmak, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the front line.</p>

<p>He added that retaking Tokmak would help Ukrainian forces in pushing towards occupied Melitopol and annexed Crimea.<br />

"I think it (a breakthrough) would happen after Tokmak," he stated, further warning, "At the moment (Russian forces) are relying on the depth of their defensive line there."<br />

Tarnavskiy then disagreed with a few predictions that the push by Ukraine could sloe down more in the coming months due to winter.<br />

"The weather can be a serious obstacle during the advance, but considering how we move forward, mostly without vehicles, I don't think (it) will heavily influence the counteroffensive," he stated.</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine's heavy artillery inflicting 'hell'</strong></h2>

<p>The heavy weapons, which were supplied by the West, in the battle taking place on the outskirts of Bakhmut, has led to a significant toll on Russia's lines, said Ukrainian commanders while speaking to Reuters.</p>

He added that retaking Tokmak would help Ukrainian forces in pushing towards occupied Melitopol and annexed Crimea. "I think it (a breakthrough) would happen after Tokmak," he stated, further warning, "At the moment (Russian forces) are relying on the depth of their defensive line there." Tarnavskiy then disagreed with a few predictions that the push by Ukraine could sloe down more in the coming months due to winter. "The weather can be a serious obstacle during the advance, but considering how we move forward, mostly without vehicles, I don't think (it) will heavily influence the counteroffensive," he stated. <p>Citing three US officials and a congressional official familiar with the matter, <em>NBC News</em> claimed President Biden told Zelensky that the US would "provide a small number of long-range missiles to aid the war with Russia".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The officials, who were not authorised to speak publicly, did not say when the missiles would be delivered or when a public announcement would be made," the report added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The development, if true, is significant as National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on Thursday (September 21), ahead of the meeting between Zelensky and Biden said the US president was not going to offer Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS).&nbsp;</p>

<p>"To date, he [Biden] is determined that he would not provide ATACMS, but he has also not taken it off the table in the future," said Sullivan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, Poland has been one of the biggest allies of Ukraine, supplying much of the weapons to the war-hit nation. Much of the weaponry that the United States and other countries send to Ukraine, passes through Poland.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, after Warsaw decided to extend the ban on Ukrainian grain imports last week to protect its farmers, despite the UN suggesting otherwise, Zelensky went on an offensive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Zelensky inadvertently targeted the Polish regime, which appears to have not gone well with Morawiecki. The Ukrainian president criticised the allies saying some countries were only pretending to support his nation as it wages a counteroffensive to retake land taken by Russia.</p>

<p>Morawiecki's statement is a continuation of the aggressive standpoint he has taken on Ukraine over the last week or so.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Wednesday (September 20), the Polish PM, surprising many, said Warsaw would no longer arm Ukraine and instead focus on its own defence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are no longer transferring weapons to Ukraine because we are now arming Poland with more modern weapons," said Morawiecki when quizzed if his country would continue to back Kyiv.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As we receive the new weaponry from the US and South Korea, we will be releasing the weaponry currently used by the Polish army. Perhaps we will transfer it to Ukraine," Duda added.</p>

<p>Additionally, Warsaw has given shelter to some one million Ukrainian refugees,&nbsp;who have benefited from various kinds of state aid.</p>

<h2><strong>Why the rise in tensions?</strong></h2>

<p>However, tensions have risen between the two sides after the Polish side imposed a ban on Ukrainian grain imports to protect its own farmers, despite the UN suggesting otherwise.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ban by the Polish side riled up&nbsp;Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who criticised the allies saying some countries were&nbsp;only pretending to support his nation as it wages a counteroffensive to retake land taken by Russia.</p>

<p>Notably, apart from Poland, Slovakia and Hungary also announced curbs on grain imports from Ukraine last Friday.</p>

<p>"There are certain frictions between Warsaw and Kyiv. We predict that these frictions between Warsaw and Kyiv will increase. <p>After Zelensky's speech, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took the centre stage and defended his country's use of veto power in the UNSC as a "legitimate tool" of international relations.</p>

<p>"The use of veto is an absolutely legitimate tool laid out in the (UN) Charter," said Lavrov.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Russian leader also accused the US and its allies of&nbsp;“egregiously and openly” interfering in the domestic affairs of Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Wednesday wasn't the first instance when Zelensky had openly egged the UNSC to chalk out Moscow's veto prowess.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Russian defence ministry released a statement on Telegram saying the anti-aircraft units sprung into action upon observing the drones and shot them instantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In the night from 20th to 21st September, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to commit a terrorist attack with lethal drones on sites in the Russian Federation was intercepted," the ministry said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Air defence systems destroyed 19 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over the Black Sea and the territory of the Republic of Crimea, and one each over the territories of Kursk, Belgorod and Oryol regions," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ministry, however, did not specify whether there&nbsp;was any damage or any civilian casualties. Kyiv rarely takes responsibility for the drone attacks and it had not commented on the Russian claims till the last update.</p>
