Ukraine has said it will not play in tournaments involving Russian teams after soccer European governing body, UEFA, announced plans to reinstate Russia's Under-17 sides to European competitions. In a statement released late on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) urged UEFA to reconsider its decision and urged other countries not to play against Russian teams.

UEFA decided after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 that all Russian teams - national or club sides - would be suspended from participation in its competitions.

But UEFA said on Tuesday that "children should not be punished for actions whose responsibility lies exclusively with adults", and that Russian U-17 sides would be readmitted to UEFA competitions "in the course of this season".

"UAF strongly condemns today's UEFA decision on the return of U-17 teams from the Russian Federation to international competitions," the UAF said, urging UEFA to stick to its blanket ban on Russian teams.

"UAF confirms that we will not take part in any competitions with the participation of Russian teams, and appeal to other UEFA member associations to boycott possible matches with the participation of teams from the Russian Federation, subject to their admission."

It said the return of Russian teams to competitions "in the midst of hostilities conducted by the Russian Federation against Ukraine is groundless and such that it tolerates Russia's aggressive policy."

England's Football Association reacted to UEFA's decision on Tuesday by saying its youth teams would not play against Russia.

The U-17 men's European Championship finals will be held in Cyprus next year, while the women's tournament will take place in Sweden.

Ukraine's sports ministry has barred Ukrainian national sports associations from sending delegations to compete at events where Russians or Belarusians were competing. Belarus let its territory be used as a launchpad for Russia's invasion.

Ukraine's football association subsequently clarified that its senior team would continue to participate in qualifiers for Euro 2024, despite the fact that the Belarusian team is competing in a separate qualifying group.

Football: Ukraine hit back at UEFA over reinstating Russia in U-17 European competitions

Russia said on Monday (September 25) that its air defence forces shot down a missile over Russian-annexed Crimea. "Our military is repelling a missile attack. According to preliminary data, air defence shot down one missile near the Belbek airfield.

Russia said on Monday (September 25) that its air defence forces shot down a missile over Russian-annexed Crimea. "Our military is repelling a missile attack. According to preliminary data, air defence shot down one missile near the Belbek airfield. Work continues," Moscow-installed governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev said on Telegram. Razvozhayev said that authorities declared an air raid alert across the region at 8.57 pm (1757 GMT). About an hour later, the governor announced the air raid alert was over. Ukraine has targeted Crimea throughout Russia's offensive but attacks on military installations there have recently intensified. Russian air strikes kill 4 in Ukraine; grain facilities damaged The above development comes as Russian air strikes on Monday killed four people in Ukraine and caused significant damage to infrastructure at the Black Sea port of Odesa and to grain storage facilities. Sharing a post on X, Ukraine's Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said, "Another massive attack on Odesa. The attack resulted in the destruction of grain storage facilities and significant damage to the seaport." According to a report by the news agency Reuters early Tuesday, Odesa region Governor Oleh Kiper said the facilities that were hit contained almost 1,000 tonnes of grain and that the bodies of two men were found under the rubble of a warehouse. Separately, Ukrainian officials said that two more people were killed in a separate air strike on the town of Beryslav in the southern Kherson region. Air attacks intensified Monday's air strikes were part of a campaign that has made it harder for major grain producer Ukraine to export its products since Moscow quit a deal in mid-July. Reuters reported that the strikes have intensified as Ukraine presses on with a counteroffensive in the south and east that has made slow gains. However, the counteroffensive can see a boost as President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United States delivered Abrams tanks to Ukraine. "Abrams are already in Ukraine and are preparing to reinforce our brigades," Zelensky said in a post on social media. He did not elaborate on how many tanks arrived or how much time would be required to deploy them to the front line. The announcement came just after Ukraine claimed it had killed the commander of Russia's Black Sea fleet in a missile strike on Moscow's naval headquarters in Crimea last week in what would be a major embarrassment for Russia. Ukraine war: Russia shoots down missile over Crimea; 4 Ukrainians killed in air strikes

Russia on Tuesday (Sep 26) rejected Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's appeal against a court decision to imprison him for 19 years on extremism charges. He was ordered to be kept in a in a maximum-security prison.

The First Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction ruled "to uphold the decision" taken by Moscow City Court last month, announced judge Viktor Rogov.

For the last decade, Navalny has been the loudest opposition voice in Russia and had organised huge anti-government rallies before he was imprisoned in 2021 on charges of fraud, which his allies at home and abroad called politically motivated.

Last month, Navalny was handed a 19-year jail term by a court in his prison near Moscow after he was accused of having created an organisation which has undermined public security by carrying out "extremist activities".

The 47-year-old had set up a network of political offices throughout the country as well as a corruption watchdog that made credible graft allegations against political leaders.

The Belarusian foreign ministry on Monday (September 25) said that they expected an “official” apology from officials in Ottawa after a Ukrainian immigrant who fought for a Nazi unit during World War II was honoured in the Canadian parliament.

The statement comes a day after the speaker of the Canadian Parliament issued an apology over the incident which happened on Friday (Sept 22) during Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Ottawa.

“Belarus, where one in three people was killed in WWII, is outraged and deeply insulted by the photos of members of the Canadian House of Commons honoring a Nazi veteran,” said the Belarusian foreign ministry, in a strongly worded statement.

It added, “We demand that international and public organizations, as well as associations and foundations created in memory of World War II victims, give a proper legal and moral assessment to this incident. We expect official apologies from the Canadian leadership.”

The First Ukrainian Division was also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division or the SS 14th Waffen Division, a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis.

“I am very proud to say that he is from North Bay and from my riding of Nipissing--Timiskaming,” said Speaker Anthony Rota who introduced him.

He added, “He is a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service.”

Rota's apology

It was not until late Sunday afternoon that Rota – who had also invited Hunka – apologised for the glaring error saying he recognised an individual in the gallery on Friday, and that he had “subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so.”

“I wish to make clear that no one, including fellow parliamentarians and the Ukraine delegation, was aware of my intention or of my remarks before I delivered them,” added the Member of Parliament from the Trudeau-led Liberal Party of Canada.

“I particularly want to extend my deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world.” However, he did not mention what he was apologising for and did not name Hunka or give any details about the information learned since Friday.

The apology on Sunday also came after the incident drew widespread condemnation from the opposition parties and the Jewish community in Canada.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is a game of attacks and counter-attacks between the two Nations. As it continues, so does the list of people who have died fighting for either side. Ukraine on Monday (September 25) claimed to have killed the Commander of Russia's Black Sea fleet Viktor Sokolov in a missile strike on the Russian naval headquarters in the annexed Crimean peninsula. The killing, if true, is a major blow for Moscow which has faced several attacks on the strategically significant port of Sevastopol in recent months.

"Thirty-four officers were killed, including the commander of the Black Sea fleet. Another 105 occupiers were wounded" in the attack last week, said Ukraine's special forces.

"The headquarters are beyond repair," it said in a statement on social media.

Last Friday, plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the building under attack in central Sevastopol, Crimea's largest city. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

The counteroffensive was announced in June after Ukraine built up assault battalions and received some weapons promised by Western countries.

He did not elaborate on how many tanks reached the country how long it would take to deploy them.

The US had promised 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine at the start of this year, part of more than $43 billion in security assistance it had promised in the last 18 months.

The decision to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine was seen as a U-turn as American defence officials repeatedly stated that they were ill-suited for the forces of Kyiv due to their complexity.

These tanks will be paired with 120 mm armour-piercing depleted uranium rounds, as per US officials. The counteroffensive was announced in June after Ukraine built up assault battalions and received some weapons promised by Western countries. "Good news from (Defence) Minister (Rustem) Umerov. Ukraine claims Russian Black Sea fleet commander killed as US Abrams tanks reach Kyiv

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned Ukraine that his government will not support Kyiv in any international issue until the language rights of ethnic Hungarians there are restored.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned Ukraine that his government will not support Kyiv in any international issue until the language rights of ethnic Hungarians there are restored. Speaking in parliament, Orban, a hardcore nationalist, pointed out the 2017 law passed by Kyiv which restricts the use of minority languages in schools. Orban believes the law curbs the rights of roughly 150,000 ethnic Hungarians to use their native tongue, especially in education. "They want to transform (Hungarian schools) into Ukrainian schools and if that does not work they want to close them," Orban was quoted as saying by Reuters. "We do not support Ukraine in any issue in the international scene until it restores the laws that guarantee the rights of Hungarians." Also read | 'Let us open doors...': Pope appeals Hungarians to be more receptive to migrants Orban's bargaining chip Orban's statement comes days after European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen suggested the vision of an expanded EU that would include Ukraine. The bloc is expected to decide on whether to begin discussions on assimilating Ukraine into its fold or not in December. However, to begin such a negotiation would require unanimous backing of all 27 countries in the bloc. With the Hungarian PM seemingly miffed by Ukraine, it looks highly unlikely that Kyiv would have smooth sailing on the issue. Budapest has already shown that it can use its decisive vote to lengthen proceedings. Sweden has been unable to become a NATO member for over a year due to Orban's unwillingness to ratify the move. Watch | Military exercise comes as Sweden starts its bid to join NATO × During the same speech, Orban touched upon the topic and said he was not in a rush to approve Sweden's bid to join NATO and that there was no threat to Sweden's security. Budapest has cited what it called undue allegations by Swedish politicians that it had eroded democratic rights. "I wonder if there is something urgent that would force us to ratify Sweden's NATO bid. I cannot see any such circumstance," Orban said. Notably, Sweden sped up its process to join the nuclear-armed alliance after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, last year. It submitted the official application in May but to become a member, all 30 NATO allies need to sign the ratification document. Every country has signed the document, bar Turkey and Hungary. Ukrainian President Zelensky visits Canada, thanks Prime Minister Trudeau for support

According to military officials, Ukraine launched a missile attack against Russia's Black Sea Fleet headquarters, resulting in the main structure going up in flames and one serviceman going missing. Following the incident in the port city of Sevastopol, the Russian Ministry of Defense first announced one service member was killed on Friday but then stated in a statement that he was missing.

The army of Ukraine crossed the Russian lines in southern Ukraine, said the general who is leading the counteroffensive while speaking to the US media this weekend amid the latest claims made by Ukraine that it is making progress in the Zaporizhzhia area.

The counteroffensive was launched by Ukraine to take back territory from Russian forces in June.

The progress of the Ukrainian army has been slower than expected because of the heavily mined territory, however, in recent weeks Kyiv reported making strategic advances in the Zaporizhzhia region.

"On the left flank (near the village of Verbove) we have a breakthrough and we continue to advance further," said General Oleksandr Tarnavskiy, while speaking to CNN.

He further acknowledged that the army's advance has been slower than what was hoped by Ukraine.

"Not as fast as it was expected, not like in the movies about the Second World War," he stated in the CNN interview.

However, he stated that it is important "not to lose this initiative". A strategic victory was declared by Kyiv last month when it successfully recaptured the southern village of Robotyne.

Tarnavskiy stated that the counteroffensive's major breakthrough will be when Kyiv recaptures the city of Tokmak, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the front line.

He added that retaking Tokmak would help Ukrainian forces in pushing towards occupied Melitopol and annexed Crimea.

"I think it (a breakthrough) would happen after Tokmak," he stated, further warning, "At the moment (Russian forces) are relying on the depth of their defensive line there."

Tarnavskiy then disagreed with a few predictions that the push by Ukraine could sloe down more in the coming months due to winter.

"The weather can be a serious obstacle during the advance, but considering how we move forward, mostly without vehicles, I don't think (it) will heavily influence the counteroffensive," he stated.

The heavy weapons, which were supplied by the West, in the battle taking place on the outskirts of Bakhmut, has led to a significant toll on Russia's lines, said Ukrainian commanders while speaking to Reuters.

A day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met his US counterpart at the White House and secured a $325 million military aid package, news reports have claimed that Washington might deliver ATACMS long-range missiles as well to Kyiv. Citing three US officials and a congressional official familiar with the matter, NBC News claimed President Biden told Zelensky that the US would "provide a small number of long-range missiles to aid the war with Russia". "The officials, who were not authorised to speak publicly, did not say when the missiles would be delivered or when a public announcement would be made," the report added. The development, if true, is significant as National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on Thursday (September 21), ahead of the meeting between Zelensky and Biden said the US president was not going to offer Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). "To date, he [Biden] is determined that he would not provide ATACMS, but he has also not taken it off the table in the future," said Sullivan. Notably, Zelensky had marched across the Pentagon, Capitol and the White House after delivering addresses at the UNGA and UNSC to secure the ATACMS missiles that can strike up to 300 kilometres (190 miles) away. His troops desperately want the missiles to stage a comeback against the Russians after the counteroffensive launched a few months ago appears to have not made major inroads. US will send ATACMS long-range missiles to Ukraine: Report

The relationship between allies Poland and Ukraine appears to be fast deteriorating after the Polish prime minister told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not to "insult" Poles again.

The relationship between allies Poland and Ukraine appears to be fast deteriorating after the Polish prime minister told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not to "insult" Poles again. "I...want to tell President Zelensky never to insult Poles again, as he did recently during his speech at the UN," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was quoted as saying by state-run news agency PAP on Friday (September 22). Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, Poland has been one of the biggest allies of Ukraine, supplying much of the weapons to the war-hit nation. Much of the weaponry that the United States and other countries send to Ukraine, passes through Poland. However, after Warsaw decided to extend the ban on Ukrainian grain imports last week to protect its farmers, despite the UN suggesting otherwise, Zelensky went on an offensive. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Zelensky inadvertently targeted the Polish regime, which appears to have not gone well with Morawiecki. The Ukrainian president criticised the allies saying some countries were only pretending to support his nation as it wages a counteroffensive to retake land taken by Russia. We will not arm Ukraine: Morawiecki Morawiecki's statement is a continuation of the aggressive standpoint he has taken on Ukraine over the last week or so. On Wednesday (September 20), the Polish PM, surprising many, said Warsaw would no longer arm Ukraine and instead focus on its own defence. "We are no longer transferring weapons to Ukraine because we are now arming Poland with more modern weapons," said Morawiecki when quizzed if his country would continue to back Kyiv. Duda talking to a Polish television channel said Morawiecki's "words were interpreted in the worst way possible...In my opinion, the prime minister meant that we won't be transferring to Ukraine the new weaponry that we're currently buying as we modernise the Polish army." "As we receive the new weaponry from the US and South Korea, we will be releasing the weaponry currently used by the Polish army. Perhaps we will transfer it to Ukraine," Duda added. 'Never insult Poles...': Polish PM warns Zelensky as allies turn bitter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US President Joe Biden on Thursday (September 21) at the White House and managed to win pledges of unstinting support and air defence weapons from the latter, but also issued a warning that Kyiv might get tipped over by Russians if the Republicans continue to oppose military aid.

Speaking at the Oval Office at the start of talks, Biden said the US remains committed to providing support in Kyiv’s efforts to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.

"We're supporting a just and lasting peace, one that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Biden.

Zelensky returned the favour by saying: "We greatly appreciate the assistance provided by the United States to combat Russian terror, really terror."

Afterwards, Biden formally announced a military aid package worth $325 million that includes air defence systems and the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155-millimeter Howitzer cannon. Additionally, the president informed that the first US M1 Abrams tanks will arrive in Ukraine "next week".

"Next week, the first US Abrams tanks will be delivered in Ukraine," Biden said.

However, the White House announced there was no deal to provide the long-range missiles that Zelensky wanted desperately for his troops.

The Ukrainian prez had marched across the Capitol and the White House after delivering addresses at the UNGA and UNSC to secure the ATACMS missiles that can strike up to 300 kilometres (190 miles) away.

"To date, he [Biden] is determined that he would not provide ATACMS, but he has also not taken it off the table in the future," said National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

Zelensky's disappointment

Despite launching a counteroffensive, Ukraine under Zelensky has made little to no inroads. His visit to Washington was an attempt to regroup and secure military funding for another round of defence.

However, signs were there that Zelensky's second visit to Washington was not being as hotly anticipated by the lawmakers as it was the last time. The Ukrainian prez was denied an opportunity to address the joint session of US Congress, with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said to be behind the decision.
