'Godzilla vs. Kong' remained atop the domestic box office in its third weekend of release. The Legendary and Warner Bros movie added another $7.7 million, boosting its North American tally to $80.5 million.

The film looks to be the first to cross $100 million in the U.S and Canada since the pandemic began. Its ticket sales are especially notable, and not just because movie theatres across the country have been operating at reduced capacity. "Godzilla vs. Kong" has been available on HBO Max to subscribers, meaning people who pay for the streaming service can watch it at home for no extra charge. Warner Bros. entire 2021 slate will follow a similar release pattern.

Given the impaired marketplace, new releases have been few and far between. That has given "Godzilla vs. Kong" and other holdover titles free rein over box office charts.

Universal`s 'Nobody', an action thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, landed in second place with $2.5 million. The film has made $19 million in the U.S. and $34 million globally in four weeks. Due to an agreement between Universal and several theatre chains, including AMC and Cinemark, audiences can already rent "Nobody" on demand.

Sony`s "The Unholy" secured the No. 3 spots with $2 million in its third weekend in theatres. The thriller has generated $9.5 million to date.

Disney`s action-adventure "Raya and the Last Dragon" came in fourth with $1.9 million over the weekend. The family-friendly movie, which has been offered on Disney Plus for a premium $30 charge, has amassed $37 million in North America since it first hit theatres.

Rounding out the top five is Warner Bros "Tom and Jerry," an animated/live-action hybrid about the infamous cat and mouse duo. It pulled in $1.1 million, bringing its North American tally to $42 million. Like "Godzilla vs. Kong," the film is also available on HBO Max for 31 days. Globally "Tom and Jerry" hit a notable box office milestone, surpassing $100 million in ticket sales.

The Oscars ceremony next week will have the look and feel of a movie, giving winners more time for speeches, while coronavirus masks will play a major role, producers of the show said on Saturday.

The coronavirus pandemic and a trio of new producers have led to a reinvention of the traditional show where the world`s highest movie honours are handed out before a seated theatre audience of more than 4,000 A-list stars and industry executives.

Much of the April 25 ceremony will instead be held at the Art Deco Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, where a stage is being built and where presenters will be doing more than opening an envelope with the winner`s name

Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga receives second-highest civilian French honour

"It`s not going to be like anything that`s been done before," director Steven Soderbergh, who is producing the show with Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins, told a news conference. Soderbergh, who directed the 2011 movie "Contagion," said the pandemic had "opened up an opportunity to try something that hasn`t been tried."

"We want the show to have a voice," he added. Soderbergh said the ceremony would be shot like a movie, with presenters including Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford and Halle Berry "playing themselves, or at least a version of themselves."

Speeches by Oscar winners were previously limited to around 45 seconds. This year, Soderbergh said, "we`re giving them space. We`ve encouraged them to tell a story, and to say something personal."

The producers said strict testing and COVID protocols would be in place, much of them following standards developed last year to get movie and TV production running again. They also have consulted extensively with epidemiologists who worked 10 years ago on "Contagion," which eerily foreshadowed the devastating effects of a virus on the world and which saw a bump in rentals and streaming last year.

Asked about masks at the ceremony, Soderbergh gave what he called a deliberately cryptic reply. "Masks are going to play a very important role in the story," he said. "That topic is very central to the narrative." Nominees unable to travel to Los Angeles for the ceremony will be able to take part via satellite hookups from venues around the world but there will be no Zoom appearances.

'Black Panther' director Ryan Coogler said on Friday he would shoot the hit movie's sequel in Georgia as planned, despite his opposition to restrictions on voting rights in the state that have prompted calls by some for a boycott.

Abrams, declared their opposition to voting curbs in Georgia and other states. Civil rights groups and others say the measures unfairly target Black and ethnic groups. Actor Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua said this week they would move production on their runaway slave thriller "Emancipation" out of Georgia, which has become a major production hub for Hollywood. Coogler on Friday wrote that he was "profoundly disappointed" at the passing of the bill in Georgia in March but had decided to educate himself before making a decision about filming the sequel there. "Having now spoken with voting rights activists in the state, I have come to understand that many of the people employed by my film, including all the local vendors and businesses we engage, are the very same people who will bear the brunt of SB202," he said, referring to the name of the bill.

Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern are teaming up for a new movie, 'The Son', which is the follow-up to writer-director Florian Zeller’s Oscar-nominated movie 'The Father'.

Like Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman starrer 'The Father', 'The Son' is adapted by Zeller and Christopher Hampton from one of Zeller’s own stage plays and follows the story of Peter (Jackman), who has a busy life with a new partner Emma and their baby. This is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife Kate (Dern) turns up with their teenage son, Nicholas.

As per the Deadline, Oscar winners Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, Joanna Laurie of See-Saw Films, produce with Christophe Spadone alongside Zeller. Film4 are co-financing the production.

Talking about the new cast and movie, Zeller said, “The Son is a deeply human story which, I believe, connects us all; I hope audiences will be profoundly moved by this family’s journey.”

“Both Hugh and Laura naturally convey great warmth, compassion, and vulnerability… inviting our audience to embrace and feel every moment. The story is set in a vibrant and very much alive New York, an important character. The movie should make us call family and friends to tell them that they are wholly loved and not alone,” Zeller added.

Oscars 2021: 'Minari', 'Nomadland', here's how to watch all Best Film nominees in India As per the Deadline, Oscar winners Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, Joanna Laurie of See-Saw Films, produce with Christophe Spadone alongside Zeller. Film4 are co-financing the production. Talking about the new cast and movie, Zeller said, “The Son is a deeply human story which, I believe, connects us all; I hope audiences will be profoundly moved by this family’s journey.” “Both Hugh and Laura naturally convey great warmth, compassion, and vulnerability… inviting our audience to embrace and feel every moment. The story is set in a vibrant and very much alive New York, an important character. The movie should make us call family and friends to tell them that they are wholly loved and not alone,” Zeller added.
