<p>A 30-year-old Non-resident Indian (NRI) was allegedly killed by her in-laws in Punjab’s Kapurthala district last week in a property dispute case. The victim, identified as Rajdeep Kaur, had been living in the US for the last seven years. However, she was called to India by her in-laws on the pretext of attending a wedding.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Police have now registered a case against the victim’s in-laws Jasdev Singh, Baljit Kaur and husband Manjinder Singh under Sections 302 (murder), 120-b (criminal conspiracy) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).</p>

<p>Police said the husband of the victim is living in the US illegally and is reportedly involved in the conspiracy of Kaur’s murder and has been charged.</p>

<p>"It is believed the woman was murdered as she had a hefty life insurance coverage," said Babandeep Singh, DSP of Sultanpur Lodhi. The family allegedly put the dead body of the victim in a freezer for two days before informing the police.</p>

<p>The victim’s mother, who lives in the UK, received a call from Kaur’s in-laws about the demise of her daughter. Nirmal Kaur immediately travelled to India and lodged a complaint with Sultanpur Lodhi police on January 25.</p>

<p>Nirmal Kaur said that her daughter was continuously subjected to torture by her husband after she refused to transfer all her property in&nbsp;his name for immigration purposes. "My daughter was called to India based on a lie about a wedding. It was a plan to kill her," she alleged.</p>

India: In-laws strangle NRI woman to death to take hefty life insurance cover, put corpse in freezer

<p>Four London teenagers who were involved in the murder of two other teenagers in November 2022 are facing life sentences. The attackers, while killing a member of the rival gang, also ended up fatally stabbing one of their own members. The group of five attackers, who arrived in a Nissan car, first rammed Charlie Bartolo’s motorbike and then jumped out to stab the 16-year-old boy repeatedly.</p>

<p>The incident took place in Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, southeast London on 26 November 2022.</p>

<p>As they attacked Charlie, one of the members accidentally stabbed 16-year-old Kearne Solank, one of their own members, in the shoulder. Kearne was later abandoned by the four attackers at a location one mile away from where Charlie was fatally attacked.</p>

<p>They left Kearne inside the car in Thamesmead. Two separate calls were made to 999 within six minutes of each other, with the two teenagers being reported dead.</p>

<p>The incident came as a result of an inter-gang rivalry between members of Thamesmead’s T-Block gang and rivals from Abbey Wood. The four teenagers were later charged with murdering two boys.</p>

<p>A woman in the US state of California survived by sitting on top of her submerged car for around 15 hours in the rushing waters of a creek, before being rescued by the emergency service personnel, said the local fire department.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The woman in the California city of Livermore was stranded on top of her car in a swift-moving creek after she had attempted to drive across a rain-swollen stream and cement bridge around 7:30 pm (local time) Monday (Jan 22), said the Alameda County Fire Department.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The woman was spotted the next morning just after 10:00 by a camper who called the fire department. She was later found&nbsp;by the fire crew who began planning the rescue and called the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for help.</p>

<p>Subsequently, the woman was hoisted up in a life preserver ring and lifted to safety.</p>

<p>While the mice tidying up someone else’s shed seems peculiar, many animals engage in what we may consider “cleaning” behaviour. For example, it is said that ants and bees remove corpses from their ant hills and hives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However the case of “Welsh Tidy Mouse” is more complicated. It is known that mice frequently groom themselves and even create and keep a separate space as a toilet in their cages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I wouldn’t say that this mouse has looked at its environment and thought: ‘Hey, this is messy. I need to tidy it up,’” said University of Bristol’s Dr Megan Jackson, who studies foraging behaviour in laboratory mice, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jackson went on to say how the mice in her lab seem to enjoy foraging for foraging’s sake. “It is really intrinsic to a mouse to want to go out into the world, pick things up and drag them back to a place that they perceive to be a good place to store things.”</p>

<p>The scientist at the University of Bristol noted that whatever the Welsh Tidy Mouse’s motivation may be, the rodent did seem to find the task fun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Researchers for the first time have simulated all stages of a runaway greenhouse effect and found that our green and blue planet will turn into an uninhabitable “hell” in the coming centuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A team of astronomers on Monday (Dec 18)&nbsp;said that it would take only a couple of degrees of rise in Earth’s temperature or a slight increase in the Sun’s luminosity&nbsp;to initiate an “irreversible” runaway warming, making it as inhospitable as Venus whose average surface temperature is around 464 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What was the research about?</strong></h2>

<p>A team of astronomers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), with support from France’s CNRS laboratories in Paris and Bordeaux, said that they were the first ones to simulate all stages of a runaway greenhouse effect, the results of which were published in the Astronomy and Astrophysics review.</p>

<p>The greenhouse effect is the process through which certain gases including water vapour in Earth’s atmosphere trap the Sun’s heat. While some of these gases occur naturally, others are generated by human activity like burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.</p>

<p>The runaway greenhouse effect is when solar irradiation increases to a point that it sets off a dramatic, snowballing rise in a planet’s temperature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The idea of a runaway of the greenhouse effect is not new and climate change is not the same as a runaway greenhouse process, but researchers warned that Earth was not far from the “apocalyptical scenario”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The runaway greenhouse effect envisions a planet evolving from a temperate state like the one currently on Earth to one with surface temperatures of above 1,000 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For this study, scientists “demonstrated that from initial stages of the process, the atmospheric structure and cloud coverage undergo significant changes, leading to an almost-unstoppable and very complicated to reverse runaway greenhouse effect".</p>

<h2><strong>What would cause the Earth to turn into ‘hell’?</strong></h2>

<p>While the research, in part, was designed to provide a tool for studying the climate on other planets, particularly those outside our solar system or exoplanets in order to determine their potential for hosting life, it also provides an insight into what Earth may look like in the centuries to come.</p>

<p>The researchers noted that a small amount of greenhouse effect is necessary to keep the Earth’s average temperature below the freezing point of water, without which it would turn into an ice-covered ball hostile to life.</p>

<p>However, too much of it increases the rate of evaporation of oceans which also raises the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere and traps heat like a rescue blanket.</p>

<p>“There is a critical threshold for this amount of water vapor, beyond which the planet cannot cool down anymore,” said Guillaume Chaverot, former postdoctoral scholar at UNIGE and main author of the study, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“From there, everything gets carried away until the oceans end up getting fully evaporated and the temperature reaches several hundred degrees,” Chaverot added.&nbsp;</p>

A team of astronomers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), with support from France’s CNRS laboratories in Paris and Bordeaux, said that they were the first ones to simulate all stages of a runaway greenhouse effect, the results of which were published in the Astronomy and Astrophysics review. The idea of a runaway of the greenhouse effect is not new and climate change is not the same as a runaway greenhouse process, but researchers warned that Earth was not far from the “apocalyptical scenario”. The runaway greenhouse effect envisions a planet evolving from a temperate state like the one currently on Earth to one with surface temperatures of above 1,000 degrees Celsius. For this study, scientists “demonstrated that from initial stages of the process, the atmospheric structure and cloud coverage undergo significant changes, leading to an almost-unstoppable and very complicated to reverse runaway greenhouse effect". While the research, in part, was designed to provide a tool for studying the climate on other planets, particularly those outside our solar system or exoplanets in order to determine their potential for hosting life, it also provides an insight into what Earth may look like in the centuries to come. However, too much of it increases the rate of evaporation of oceans which also raises the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere and traps heat like a rescue blanket. “There is a critical threshold for this amount of water vapor, beyond which the planet cannot cool down anymore,” said Guillaume Chaverot, former postdoctoral scholar at UNIGE and main author of the study, in a statement. “From there, everything gets carried away until the oceans end up getting fully evaporated and the temperature reaches several hundred degrees,” Chaverot added. <p>"It's now one week out from the wedding and I have already given the confirmed numbers to the venue and paid the outstanding amount, which was $12,426," the woman said while speaking on the "She's on the Money" podcast.</p>

<p>"Within the last week, ten guests, who had previously RSVP'd, said that they were coming and have now cancelled citing that it's too expensive for them to travel interstate," she added.</p>

<p>The woman further said that if she did not "scramble to cover their seats," she would be losing out on approximately $1,336.</p>

<p>"Is it reasonable to request that they cover these costs themselves?" she said.</p>

<p>The bride also said that the formal invites were sent to the guests in the month of January with the majority of attendees sending out confirmations in July.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What other features have been introduced?</strong></h2>

<p>Messenger users can now edit their messages for up to 15 minutes after sending them. Disappearing messages on the application will now last for 24 hours.</p>

<p>Furthermore, to increase privacy controls, Messenger will now allow users to control their read receipts. Additionally, there is an upgrade to the quality of images users can share, along with the introduction of "added fun layouts".</p>

<p>Another feature similar to that available in WhatsApp is that voice messages can now be sped up to 1.5x and 2x speeds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>End-to-end encryption has been a bone of contention between companies and governments. The British government had urged Meta back in September not to roll out encryption on Instagram and Facebook Messenger without safety measures to protect children from sexual abuse.</p>
