<p>During the inquest, Senior Coroner Heidi Connor mentioned that "nitrous oxide gas," commonly referred to as laughing gas, contributed to "part of her cause of death." The post-mortem report revealed that Ellen Mercer's death was attributed to bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism, deep vein thrombosis, and "long-term complications associated with nitrous oxide use."</p>

<p>Michaela Kirtley, an emergency medical technician from Phoenix Response Services, affiliated with the South Central Ambulance Service, visited Mercer’s residence on February 8.</p>

<p>Upon arrival, Mercer’s boyfriend guided her to the bedroom.</p>

<p>“I took notice of the room,” Kirtley recalled.</p>

<p>“There were no sheets on the bed at all. There was just the duvet, severely stained. The room was bare.”</p>

<p>This sight led Kirtley to recognise the vulnerability of the individual she was dealing with.</p>

<p>According to Kirtley, Mercer “was talking as normal,” and the only abnormal vital sign noted was her heart rate, which could have been elevated due to anxiety.</p>

<p>Upon inspecting&nbsp;Mercer's leg wounds, described as "pussy," Kirtley's concerns heightened.</p>

<p>During the inquest, Kirtley recounted that&nbsp;Mercer's boyfriend presented a box of gas canisters, identified as nitrous oxide. Kirtley remarked that these canisters were unusually large, weighing 600g. According to&nbsp;Mercer's boyfriend, she consumed "two to three bottles" per day, although her intake had decreased in recent weeks.</p>

<p>Mercer informed Kirtley that she had lost consciousness, resulting in the gas canister falling onto her legs.</p>

<p>Subsequently, an ambulance took Mercer to the hospital.</p>

Their paper, published in Communications Psychology, outlines interesting patterns underlying how people detect lies online.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"People all around the world have been losing billions to online scams year on year," Tali Sharot and Sarah Zheng, co-authors of the paper, told Medical Xpress. "This trend has worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic and is worsening with the advent of generative AI. Now, before we can help people detect online scams, we need to understand why people fall for them in the first place."</p>

<p>Since both scams and fake news are rooted in deception and lies, the researchers first reviewed past literature focusing on the same. In offline contexts, people can also try to detect lies based on subtle cues, such as a person's body language.</p>

<p>"In online settings, we typically cannot rely on such cues," Sharot and Zheng explained. "We thus set out to study why people can be particularly bad at detecting lies, and thus scams, in an online context."</p>

<p>The authors did three interesting experiments with 310 people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All of them were asked to take part in an online card game played in pairs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, certain cards would result in winning money, while others might cause a financial loss.</p>

<p>Participants could choose to lie about the card they received to win more money at the expense of another player.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The participants, however, were never instructed to lie.</p>

<p>"At the end of each play, participants rated how honest they thought the other player was," Sharot and Zheng said. "We examined what cues people used to judge others' honesty. For example, did they think others lied when they themselves did? Did they think others lied when the other person reported having a rare card? And did they think others lied when they themselves lost?"</p>

<p>The researchers observed two patterns. First, they observed that people were more suspicious of others if they had themselves lied during the game. Secondly, they were suspicious when other players were holding a statistically unlikely card.</p>

<p>Zheng, Rozenkrantz and Sharot also compared the behavior of players to the predictions of an artificial, simulated lie detector.</p>

<p>The researchers found that poor lie detection was associated with an over-reliance on one's own honesty (or dishonesty) and an under-reliance on statistical cues.</p>

<p>"These findings imply that honest people may be particularly susceptible to scams, because they are the least likely to suspect a lie and thus detect a scam," Sharot and Zheng explained.</p>

<p>"Moreover, as social media platforms use recommendation systems that feed people with more of the same content they like, these systems distort the likelihood of seeing certain information—fake news included. People's natural reliance on statistical likelihoods to infer what is true thus will not work well in these contexts."</p>

<p>A fire occurred at Ujjain Mahakal Temple in central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Monday (Mar 25) injuring at least 14&nbsp;people, including five priests, during the Holi festival. The fire broke out inside the 'garbhagriha' or the sanctum sanctorum during ‘bhasma aarti’ being performed as part of Holi festivities. All injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment.</p>

<p>"The fire suddenly flared up during 'bhasma aarti' when 'gulal' was being offered to Mahakal. A cover was placed in the sanctum sanctorum due to 'dhulendi', which caught fire and fell on the priests and devotees," priest Aashish Pujari was quoted as saying in media reports.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened?</strong></h2>

<p>According to media reports, as gulal was being thrown in air to celebrate Holi, some of it landed on Puja thali that had burning camphor. Then, the camphor fell on to the floor and the fire spread.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Fourteen priests suffered burn injuries. Some are being treated in the district hospital here, while eight have sought treatment in Indore. A magisterial probe has been ordered. It will be conducted by Zila Panchayat CEO Mrinal Meena and Additional Collector Anukool Jain and a report will be submitted in three days," one official said.</p>

<p>In a post on X, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the incident was unfortunate but the situation is under control now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"A few priests have been injured and they have been admitted to hospitals in Indore and Ujjain. I am going there. I have ordered a magisterial investigation and will ensure that these things won't repeat. Action will be taken against those at fault," he said.</p>

<p>Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he was praying for the recovery of the injured.</p>

<p>A woman's yoga session took an unexpected turn when she allegedly broke into Phillippa’s Bakery after her stretching routine in the parking lot of&nbsp;Melbourne city in&nbsp;Australia.</p>

<p>Surveillance footage captured the woman dressed in black, stretching her legs and body outside the bakery at 3 am on March 17.</p>

<p>After her impromptu yoga session, the suspect reportedly entered the bakery and made off with an assortment of items, including croissants, an iPad, chef’s shoes, and cleaning products, according to&nbsp;<em>9 News</em>.</p>

<p>Bakery staff shared the surveillance footage on social media, stating, "We were quite surprised when we saw the security footage from a recent break in at our Bakery HQ."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bakery suggested that the croissants might have been too tempting for the flexible burglar, jokingly adding, "Seems like yoga is a must before breaking in. A few things were stolen, including some croissants which were clearly too tempting for this flexible burglar."</p>

<p>The Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary (OOIDSS) is approximately one-half the size of the US state of New Jersey, according to the organisation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As the population of Oregon and the trend of light pollution continue to rise, the unparalleled scale and quality of the Outback’s dark skies will long serve as a starry refuge to people and wildlife alike,” said DarkSky environmental consultant, Dawn Nilson, who managed and authored the application.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These sanctuaries provide opportunities for stargazing, astrophotography, and other nighttime activities which require less light pollution and the certification will ensure the area remains protected, said DarkSky International, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Oregon is also home to two other DarkSky sanctuaries, Prineville Reservoir State Park and Sunriver Nature Center &amp; Observatory.</p>

<p>Speaking about the certification, Bob Hackett, executive director of Travel Southern Oregon said that their collaboration with the organisation has brought so many elements that they “try to achieve in regenerative tourism.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nearly 1.7 million acres of the sanctuary are overseen by the US Bureau of Land Management. It took nearly four years and coordination with several government agencies on the federal, state and local levels as well as legal obstacles to overcome that led to the certification of OOIDSS, said DarkSky International.&nbsp;</p>
