Considering the series was a huge hit back in the year of release, it has over the years enjoyed a huge fan base. Something that Indian filmmaker and director Sandeep Modi and producer Simon Corwell &nbsp;(the producer of the original series and the remake) know very well. In a candid chat with WION, the two makers discussed the pressure of making a remake of successful series, why it had to be adapted for the Indian audience, and if there is a possibility of season 2 of 'The Night Manager.

Here are the excerpts from the interview:&nbsp;

Q: Congratulations on the show. Considering it's a remake of a hit series, comparisons are inevitable. Did that pose as a challenge?&nbsp; 
 
Sandeep Modi: There are things in the original that I told my team was gold. Don't throw the gold, I said. The key part was to identify what's awesome and keep that. So it was critical and challenging to make it Indian and yet to stay true to the vision of John le Carré. The joy was whenever we would finish an episode and send a rough cut to Team Ink- the true custodian of le Carre's legacy, we were always sensitive to how Simon and the team would react and they have so far liked it. Very gracious with their love for it honestly.&nbsp; 
 
Simon Corwell:&nbsp;Sandy has excelled. He did his best and it worked. From my perspective, Obviously, I&nbsp;loved the original but what I love about the Indian show is that we move in so many ways beyond the original. In the storytelling and direction, we are breaking new ground, if we look at Adi's performance or Anil's performance, they have found their own version of the characters and made it their own.&nbsp; 
 
Tilottama Shome is just fantastic. She made the part her own instantly. Gives it so much emotional strength. 
&nbsp; 
Sandeep and the team have given the show recognisable links to the original but it's so much more than that. From my perspective, it looks emotionally strong and exciting.&nbsp;

Q: How did the Indian remake come about?&nbsp; 
 
Simon Corwell: It came about, quite honestly, randomly. We started the conversation about the Indian remake of the series. At that time my dad (author John le Carré) was still alive. &nbsp;I went to him and told him that somebody has floated the idea to make an Indian adaptation. I was a little nervous, he wrote the book and it's not set in India. But his face lit up and he said 'How fabulous a thing that would be!'. His story was universal enough to be the jumping-off point for an entirely new way of re-telling it. So that was how the journey started. And then the challenge became how to tell the story in a way it feels completely Indian. But I must say that as writers Sandeep (Modi ) and Shridhar (Raghavan) have made such a great reality of that vision.&nbsp;

Sandeep Modi: &nbsp;Of course, we had to tweak it. We had interrogated&nbsp;every part of the book in that sense. I had to tell the team if it was only required to be told in Hindi we could have easily dubbed Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie's voices in Hindi. But that's not how a story works and the audience should be invested emotionally and culturally in the show.&nbsp;There are many aspects- dare I tell the lovers of the original- &nbsp;we have tinkered around with. We hope you like it. if not I am going underground for a week or two&nbsp;(laughs)

Q: The casting seems very interesting. It brings together commercial stars like Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur in the same frame as Tillotama Shome, who is known to be a part of indies and world cinema. What was the mandate for casting such actors? 
 
Sandeep: I was aided by a great team. Mukesh Chhabra my casting director was instrumental in this. He always comes up with whacked-out ideas for casting and I pick the best out of them and push him to deliver more. Tillotama was someone I was personally invested in. I will take the credit for casting her. I always felt that the strength of character that Olivia Coleman played in the original was different. Strength is a mental thing not physical. And to portray a strong intelligence officer did not require physical strength. Wanted to make a statement by casting a brilliant actor like Tillotama. &nbsp;That's why she was cast- who could make a vulnerable personal look strong and that's what our challenge was. Strength has so many shades and colours, so many types.&nbsp; 
 
Anil Sir is a mainstream superstar and Tilottama has made us proud with her work in world cinema the face-off between the two is something that I had dreamt of long back.&nbsp; 
 
This is an Indian show set in Asia with Indian talent. So when you say India, there are so many Indians and actors from all across the country. So there is Bengali actor Saswata Chatterjee, there is Rukshar, and there is Ravi Behl. We have actors from Kashmir. So much talent! Even with the crew- we got the best to tell an Indian story.&nbsp;

Q: What is that one essential thing that makes for a good Indian thriller?&nbsp; 
 
Sandeep: I think it comes from emotions. Every story comes from emotion. I consider Mr Ram Madhvani my mentor. Both of us created 'Aarya' and we always felt good thrillers always make the audience sit on the edge of their seat but that only happens when they can connect with the characters. The only reason the viewer will connect to a thriller is when they care about the characters. Joy is the emotion.&nbsp;

Q: Simon, there has been so much conversation about making season 2 of the original series The Night Manager. Will it ever happen? 
 
Simon:&nbsp; I would love to see season two of The Night Manager. Maybe the stars will align for it happens but you know it's been a long time now. It's a dream of mine for a long time but it will stay a dream perhaps.&nbsp;

While the recent news reports have confirmed that the Hindi remake will star Aditya Roy Kapur in the lead, it was also offered to actor Ali Fazal who was also keen to take up the part. However, due to his shoot commitments for his Hollywood film with Gerard Butler and season 3 of 'Mirzapur' Ali had to decline the project.&nbsp;

A source disclosed, “Ali was approached soon after Hrithik couldn’t do the project. The team was figuring out the perfect schedule to ensure the project starts on time, however, it was getting stuck between dates. Ali was already committed to do Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya and then also season 3 of 'Mirzapur' and hence owing to these issues, he eventually had to let go of 'The Night Manager' remake”.

Interestingly Ali will be seen playing an intelligence officer in Vishal Bhardwaj's next and will also be seen in a high-octane action drama,'Kandahar'.

By making another version of Loki a hero, the series itself is acting as a variant. In general, Marvel has been using its latest Disney+ shows to deviate from the often wearying, even oppressive, timeline that the films have established. These side stories open up the world to more subtle, interesting narratives: “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” allowed their heroes to develop in terms of both superhero abilities and emotional depth.

But whatever their divergences, these stories always end up leashed to the main MCU narrative: Marvel’s own inviolable timeline, which often yields an awkward result. “WandaVision” used its classic TV parodies to cleverly explore the contours of grief and emotional escapism until its “Avengers” adjacency apparently demanded a requisite explosive ending. Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) wrestled with trauma and its consequences, but the specter of Captain America and the question of whether Sam would ultimately take up the shield took over the story in the end.

In “Loki,” the Asgardian discovers that everything is predestined, even his identity. Loki is supposed to be a villain, and he is supposed to lose. There are no other options. What the series asks is, how does a character whose purpose is simply to accentuate, by way of contrast, the strengths and flaws of others lead his own story?

Marvel risks undercutting itself with “Loki” and with each bit of narrative chaos introduced by its latest shows. How can anything have emotional stakes when there is always a loophole or deus ex machina around the corner? (Indeed, “Loki” takes place in a closed loop, which by the series’s end has reset.) And at what point does narrative consistency fall apart and give us an indecipherable jumble of contradicting events?

The franchise wants to subscribe to both a traditional mode of storytelling and a bit of narrative chaos in the form of time travel, multiple universes and nonlinear shifts in time and space — all of which allow for deviations from the main storyline. But the more variant stories we get, the more unstable and convoluted the whole structure becomes.

“Loki” is a fun touch of chaos for Loki fans, myself included, but it makes me wonder how much longer the relative order of the MCU franchise’s central chronology can sustain the backpedaling and jumps and reversals, even within their own pockets of time. The vast megaverse that is Marvel already hosts countless characters and stories, and yet having one in which Loki is still alive is infinitely more fun.

But as delightful as “Loki” is conceptually, to me it felt like simply a fun, diverting experiment. What Marvel will do with the results of this experiment is another story. This season’s cliffhanger ending means that the full measure of the series’s success and impact is still to come, whether in the second season promised in the finale or in the broader MCU.

Is “Loki” truly a variant within the MCU? Will it introduce reverberations throughout the films and TV shows going forward, or will it be essentially isolated in its own playful thought bubble? If the former, I suspect Marvel won’t be able to sustain the full heft of the master narrative, with all of those branches, forever — that is, unless Marvel fully embraces chaos and lets the MCU fracture into separate multiverses without such a restrictive overarching timeline. After all, if the god of mischief has taught us anything, it’s that a little bit of chaos can go a long way.

Following the episode`s release, series director Kate Herron confirmed and celebrated on Twitter that the scene established Loki as the MCU`s first openly bisexual character.

"From the moment I joined @LokiOfficial it was very important to me, and my goal, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual," she wrote. 
She added, "It is a part of who he is and who I am too. I know this is a small step but I`m happy, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon in #mcu." 
 
`Loki` is the third of Marvel`s scripted TV series to debut on Disney+. The first, `WandaVision`, ended with an episode that was labeled as a series finale. The Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany series also scored 23 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, second overall, an impressive showing for Marvel`s first foray, in the limited series category.

Marvel`s second offering, `The Falcon and the Winter Soldier`, is billed as an ongoing drama series (it collected five Emmy nominations in the category on Tuesday). That series leads into the next Captain America movie as Marvel continues to move seamlessly between television and film as it connects the MCU to Disney+ originals.

If the first episode of the series establish Time Variance Authority (TVA), its job and maintaining the seamless flow of the timeline and Loki's past, the second episode dives deep into the history to hunt down a dangerous variant with the help of Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

TVA agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) has had to give several explanations to various authorities at TVA on why he thinks Loki should be given a chance to work with the team. Most are sceptical and wary of Loki but Mobius feels the God of Mischief holds the key to the variant they all have been hunting for. Turns out it's a variation of Loki himself and it is Loki who can understand and detect where his version- a more powerful and dangerous one- can be hiding.&nbsp;

One of TVA's commander goes missing, when she is taken by the variant from the middle of Oshkosh, Wisconsin folk- festival in 1985. Loki suggests that maybe the variant could be hiding in any of the apocalypse - past or future. Mobius and he even go back in time to 800 AD in Italy Pompei, minutes before the town is to be engulfed by volcanic erruption. But are unable to find the variant.&nbsp;

The episode is significant because it not only introduces the idea of multiple versions of Loki, who may be more powerful, evil and clever than the original who has now changed sides to help the TVA. It also introduces a female version of Loki (Sophia Di Martino) who outdoes not just the sleuths but Loki himself in every possible way. Right at the beginning, the makers had stated that Loki would be gender fluid and while the first episode did not give away much on his gender, perhaps the introduction of female Loki in Episode 2 is the beginning of something new here.&nbsp;

One of the poignant moments in the episode has Loki questioning the sacred timeline to Mobius. Mobius on his part doesn't like questioning while Loki points out the futility of TVA's job of maintaining the timeline with such precision. If one reads in between the lines, it talks of life and death and how no one can really control what is inevitable.&nbsp;

The second episode ends at an interesting but slightly predictable point with Loki leaving Mobius and the TVA soldiers high and dry.&nbsp;

Things have just started getting interesting on the show and it will be interesting to watch how Loki clashes with a version of himself. There's been a mention of the Ragnarok and one will have to wait and watch if God Of Mischief is going to home back to Asgard his home.&nbsp;
