Spain`s Rafael Nadal will look to continue his remarkable career after crushing Norway`s Casper Ruud 6-3 6-3 6-0 on Sunday to lift a record-extending 14th French Open, saying despite injury concerns he would battle on.

The Spaniard, the world`s best-ever claycourt player, won 11 games in a row to cruise through the second and third sets to take his tally to an all-time best 22 men`s Grand Slam titles, two more than rivals Swiss Roger Federer and world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

"I don`t know what can happen in the future. I will keep fighting to try to keep going," he told the crowd at Court Philipp Chatrier.

"For me it is incredible to play here with an amazing support from you to me."

I will keep fighting, says Rafael Nadal after winning record-extending 14th French Open title

Rafael Nadal was absolutely unstoppable as he thrashed Norway's Casper Ruud in straights sets to win the French Open 2022 men's singles final in Paris on Sunday (June 05). Nadal has now won the French Open crown a record 14 times, a feat which has not been achieved by any male or female player in tennis history. He has also clinched a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title further enhancing his lead over arch-rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, who are both tied on 20 Grand Slams each.

Nadal was an overwhelming favourite heading into the summit clash against 23-year-old Ruud, who he had mentored during his early days at the famous Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain. Rudd had admitted ahead of the final that he almost lost each time he came up against the Spaniard during practice matches at the academy.

It was nothing different at the&nbsp;Court Philippe Chatrier in Paris on Sunday as Nadal once again proved why he remains the King of Clay. Nadal extended his flawless record in the French Open finals to 14-0. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has never lost in a final at the Roland Garros throughout his illustrious career.

He has come up against some of the best in the business with the likes of Djokovic, Federer and Stan Wawrinka among others trying to stop him in a French Open final. However, the Spaniard has managed to outclass them all to create an unparalleled legacy at the Roland Garros.

<h3>Rafael Nadal - Oldest men's champion in French Open history</h3>

Ahead of the much-awaited final, Nadal had no second thoughts in his mind when he was asked if he would give up a potential 22nd Grand Slam title for a new foot. The Spaniard, who has been dealing with a chronic injury in his left foot for quite a while now, said he would 'prefer to lose the final' against Ruud for a new foot as it would keep him happy for the rest of his life.

Despite battling a serious injury and in the final lap of his career, Nadal remains a force to reckon with on clay courts and has now become the oldest men's champion in French Open history by winning the title at the age of 36. 14 out of his 22 Grand Slams have come at the Roland Garros, showcasing his incredible dominance at the tournament.

Ruthless Rafael Nadal thrashes Casper Ruud to win 14th French Open crown, clinches 22nd Grand Slam title

Casper Ruud will be up against his mentor Rafael Nadal in the men's singles final of the French Open 2022 on Sunday (June 05). Rudd has so far won six titles in his career, five of which have come on clay. He has an exceptional game for the claycourt and has been one of the most consistent players in this year's French Open. However, the Norweigan is set to play the biggest game of his career so far in the summit clash against Nadal on Sunday as he will be tasked to stop the raging Spaniard, who has been invincible at the Roland Garros.

Nadal, one of the greatest of all time, has dominated at French Open over the years and is yet to lose a final at Roland Garros. He has not lost once in 13 final appearances so far in the prestigious competition and will be bidding for a 14th title at the Court Philippe Chatrier on Sunday.

If he manages to win the trophy, it will also be a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title for Nadal, further extending his lead over arch-rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, who are both tied on 20 titles each. But standing in between him and the 22nd Grand Slam crown will be Ruud, who is the first man from his country to reach a Grand Slam singles final.

Several greats in the past, including the likes of Federer, Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka among others have tried to stop Nadal in a French Open final. However, they have all failed with the Spaniard maintaining a perfect 13-0 record. But Ruud will have some advantage this time around having played against Nadal several times at his academy.

Not many know, but the Norweigan used to train at Nadal's academy in Manacor as a teenager and played several practice games against the Spanish icon. Ruud will be hoping to bring all his experience to use in the final against Nadal with his maiden Grand Slam title in sight.

Casper Ruud - The Rafa Nadal Academy graduate

Ruud trained under Nadal and got to learn the tricks and trade of te sport from him after he was sent to the Rafa Nadal Academy in 2018. The academy is run by Nadal's former coach and his uncle Tony along with the other members of his family and team.&nbsp;

Ruud's father Christian Ruud had revealed how his son got a chance to train at Nadal's academy and also stated that they enjoy a great relationship with the coaches and staff at the academy.&nbsp;

"When Casper Ruud was [a teenager], Carlos Costa came to me during the French Open and was wondering if he wanted to come [to the Rafa Nadal Academy] and try it out," Christian Ruud said. "It was a big step for us. We are very happy with our relationship with them, and hope it will continue for many years," Ruud's father had recalled in an interview.

Ruud will be hoping to bring all his experience to use in the final against Nadal with his maiden Grand Slam title in sight. Casper Ruud - The Rafa Nadal Academy graduate Ruud trained under Nadal and got to learn the tricks and trade of te sport from him after he was sent to the Rafa Nadal Academy in 2018. The academy is run by Nadal's former coach and his uncle Tony along with the other members of his family and team. Ruud's father Christian Ruud had revealed how his son got a chance to train at Nadal's academy and also stated that they enjoy a great relationship with the coaches and staff at the academy. German tennis player Alexander Zverev, who suffered a semifinal heartbreak at Roland Garros as he was forced to pull out of the clash against Rafael Nadal midway due to injury, has revealed that he has several torn ligaments in his right foot.

Under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier, one of the biggest matches of the season was cut short at 7-6(8), 6-6, when Zverev had to leave the court on a wheelchair after he badly rolled his right ankle, moving to his right when tracking down a Nadal forehand deep behind the baseline.

Zverev cried in pain following the fall and had to be assisted into a wheelchair by the physio and Nadal, who quickly made his way round the net to help support the 25-year-old.

Clearly in agony, the world No. 3 returned to court on crutches several minutes later to shake the hand of the umpire. He received a standing ovation from fans and a hug from Nadal, who is now one win away from capturing a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam trophy.

Alexander Zverev reveals he has several torn ligaments after twisting right foot in semi-final vs Rafael Nadal

Rafa Nadal has never lost a French Open final. A win on Sunday against first-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud would deliver a record-extending 14th crown to the Spaniard and widen his lead in the men`s race for the most major titles.

Nadal, who turned 36 on Friday, overcame physical ailments and a dismal period of preparation to win the Australian Open in January to take his record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title, breaking a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

If he lifts the Musketeers` Cup again on Sunday, it will be the first time the left-hander has taken the hardcourt major in Melbourne and the Roland Garros title in the same year and would keep him in contention for a calendar Grand Slam.

Nadal enjoys near-mythical status at Roland Garros, where a statue has already been erected in his honour. But standing in his way will be the eighth-seeded Norwegian, 13 years younger and the most consistent player on clay courts in the last three years.

Ruud has led the men`s Tour since the start of the 2020 season in clay-court wins, finals and titles and is the first man from his country to make a Grand Slam singles final.

"I have a huge respect for him. First of all in terms of a friend, he has a great character," Nadal said of Ruud, who has been training at his academy in Mallorca since 2018. "He`s a great guy, and he has a great family.

"As a player, of course, I respect him a lot. He did a lot of great things the last couple of years," he said. "It`s not a surprise."

Nadal and Ruud have never played a competitive match before, but the duo have hit against each other plenty of times and the Norwegian says he has never won a practice set against his idol.

Ruud, who will rise to a career-high ranking of sixth on Monday, said he has already gone past his pre-season target of making a quarter-final at a major in 2022.

"It is amazing... He is the last player of the Big Three and the very top players in the world I have never played against," Ruud said.

"So I guess this is perfect timing and worth the wait. To finally play him in a Grand Slam final will be a special moment for me. Hopefully a little bit for him as well.

"He has played so many finals, but at least he is playing a student from his academy this time. So it is going to be a fun one hopefully."

Similar to his leadup to the Australian Open, Nadal arrived at Roland Garros with persisting fitness doubts after suffering a rib stress fracture and struggling with a chronic foot injury. He won his first three rounds at the claycourt Grand Slam in straight sets but then had to survive intense four-hour battles to beat Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in five sets and arch-rival and 2021 champion Djokovic in four.

Nadal, who would pass fellow Spaniard Andres Gimeno as the oldest Roland Garros men`s singles champion if he wins, had to dig deep again in a three-hour slugfest in the semi-final against Alexander Zverev before the German was forced to retire mid-match after injuring his ankle.

Chris Evert, who won seven of her 18 majors at Roland Garros, was unsure of Nadal`s physical condition for the final.

"It`s going to be really interesting," Eurosport expert Evert said after Nadal`s semi-final win on Friday.

"Rafa today against Zverev, even though he gave such a fight, I felt like he was a step slower than normal because he has had such big matches and drawn-out matches along the way, and I wonder which Rafa is going to show up on Sunday."

A woman disrupted the semi-final between Croatia's Marin Cilic and Norwegian Casper Ruud at the ongoing French Open 2022 on Friday (May 03). The environmental activist jumped onto the court and tied herself to the net during the men's singles semi-final between the two players. The game had to be delayed by 15 minutes due to the disruption caused by the woman.

The woman, a French national, was spotted wearing a t-shirt with a message - 'we have 1028 days left' referring to the UN report on climate change. The woman walked on to the Court Phillipe-Chatrier unchallenged raising serious questions over the security arrangements at the tournament.

The woman tied herself to the net with a string around her neck and raised her right hand while the message on her t-shirt was highlighted. The French Tennis Federation said the woman had entered the grounds with a valid ticket earlier in the day and attached herself to the net with the help of metal and glue.

Both Cilic and Casper Ruud were quick to leave the court as the woman stormed onto it and tied herself to the net. The tournament's director Amelie Mauresmo looked on as security guards had to remove the woman before the match resumed. She was handed over to the police by the guards.

Reacting to the incident, Casper Rudd, who defeated Cilic 3-6 6-4 6-2 6-2 in the semi-final on Friday, said he didn't know how to react to the situation. He was leading 3-6 6-4 4-1 against the Croatian before the play was interrupted by the protestor. The Norwegian said the break helped him find his groove again.

Rafael Nadal said he is ready to sacrifice a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title in exchange for a new foot. Nadal has been playing in the ongoing French Open 2022 with a chronic left foot injury which he believes can prove fatal and end his illustrious career any day. However, the great Spaniard, who has been en epitome of grit and determination over the years, has made it to yet another final despite the injury. Nadal will take on Casper Rudd in the men's singles final of the French Open 2022 on Sunday (June 05).

It has been far from an easy ride for Nadal in the French Open this year. Nadal said he would 'prefer to lose the final' against Rudd in exchange for a new left foot.

Ahead of the final against Rudd at French Open 2022, Nadal said a new foot would allow to live him happily for the rest of his life and that is worth more than a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title. 'I'd prefer to lose the final': Rafael Nadal ready to sacrifice 22nd Grand Slam title for new left foot

Coco Gauff says she has "nothing to lose" in Saturday's French Open final against world number one Iga Swiatek, with her opponent on a 34-match winning streak and looking for a second Roland Garros title. Teenage star Gauff is the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon 18 years ago and only graduated from high school while in Paris.

The 18-year-old has yet to drop a set in the tournament and showed few signs of nerves in her first major semi-final with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Martina Trevisan.

But she is the underdog against Poland's Swiatek, who will equal Venus Williams' record for the longest women's unbeaten run in the 21st century if she lifts the trophy.

"I think going in I have nothing to lose and she's definitely the favourite going into the match on paper," said American Gauff, who burst onto the scene by making the Wimbledon fourth round as a 15-year-old in 2019.

"I'm just going to play free and play my best tennis. I think in a Grand Slam final anything can happen.

"If I do lift the trophy, honestly, I don't think my life is going to change really. I know it sounds kind of bad to say that, but the people who love me are still going to love me regardless if I lift the trophy or not."

Swiatek, who herself only turned 21 on Tuesday, has enjoyed a remarkable season and is looking for a sixth successive title. The 2020 French Open champion's 6-2, 6-1 semi-final thrashing of Daria Kasatkina saw her draw level with Serena Williams' career-best winning streak from 2013.

"It's going to be tough (for her opponent)," said Russian Kasatkina after seeing her run comprehensively ended by the top seed.

"I think the mental part is going to, especially at the beginning, make a big difference.

"It's difficult when the player is moving good and then she can transition to attack mode. Then it makes it really, really tough."

Swiatek has an excellent French Open record and has become the youngest player to win 20 matches at Roland Garros since Martina Hingis in 1999. Four of Swiatek's five tournament victories this year have come at the prestigious WTA 1,000 events, but she says she still has to battle nerves before big matches.

"I couldn't get rid of the expectations fully (in the semi-finals), but I tried to accept that, that they are going to be there and it's going to stress me a little bit more," said Swiatek, who is hoping to become the 10th multiple Roland Garros winner in the Open era.

Gauff wrote "peace, end gun violence" on a courtside TV camera after her semi-final victory and has said she wants to speak out about issues off the court.

Swiatek, though, does not think she is ready yet to use her profile to talk about political or social issues.

"I don't actually know how I want to use my platform," she said. "I haven't figured it out yet, because it's still pretty new for me.

"I feel like I really have to focus on my tennis first. When I'm going to get more experience in life generally I think it's going to be easier for me to choose the right path."

The Pole has won both of her career meetings with Gauff -- in the 2021 Rome semi-finals and in Miami earlier this year.

"I'm pretty happy that she's doing well, because I think she's also had a huge amount of pressure in her life," Swiatek said of Gauff, who is also into the women's doubles final alongside Jessica Pegula.

"When I see her, I tend to forget that she's 18."

Swiatek says she listens to classic rock music, including Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, before stepping onto court, while Gauff enjoys a hardcore rap playlist.

But there won't be a clash of styles on Court Philippe Chatrier as both players have a game based on hard-hitting from the baseline. With a combined age younger than the injured Serena Williams, this could be the first Grand Slam chapter of a long rivalry at the top of the women's game.

Coco Gauff has 'nothing to lose' against world no.1 Iga Swiatek in French Open 2022 final

American tennis player Coco Gauff defeated&nbsp;Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-1 in her semi-final match in the women's singles at the 2022 French Open, on Thursday (June 02), and used the platform to demand&nbsp;action on mass shootings in the United States&nbsp;by writing "peace, end gun violence" on a courtside TV camera.

Before sharing&nbsp;her message for gun control back at home, Gauff&nbsp;insisted that the recent tragedies mean she will treat victory or defeat with equal equanimity in the championship match, where she will face unstoppable and world number one Iga Swiatek. "Yeah it's a Grand Slam final but there are so many things going on in the world, especially in the U.S. -- I think it's not important to stress over a tennis match," she said during her on-court TV interview.

Teenage sensation Coco Gauff reacts to recent mass shootings in USA after reaching French Open final

The French Open 2022 edition has lived up to expectations so far. While the competition has intensified in the men's singles, the women's singles are also set to see a marquee finale as world number one Iga Swiatek will square off with teen sensation Coco Gauff.&nbsp;

Ahead of the clash, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo got a chance to interact with Indian tennis coach Enrico Piperno, who opined on the women's singles finale. On the clash versus the world no. 1 vs no. 23, Piperno said, "Well, Coco came into the scene a couple of years ago. Back then, she had the tools to become a superstar. Gauff is one of those players who doesn't get heat on the court. She is very very spolid. To beat her, you got to really beat her. She seems a lot more relaxed. She has the tools to win the Grand Slam.&nbsp;

Swiatken, on the other hand, has had a terrific streak. But she will have a fall sometime. Is it going to be tomorrow, we will know....It won't be easy for Swiatek. Gauff will not go down very easily. Swiatek will have her hands full," Piperon opined.

In the men's singles, Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev are engaged in a mouth-watering semi-final as the birthday boy Nadal is eyeing his 14th title at the Roland Garros. With the win, Nadal improved his head-to-head record against Djokovic to 29-30. Here is a look at some of the best matches between the duo in 59 meetings between them.

Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic - The best of tennis' epic rivalry

Iga Swiatek continued her march towards a second French Open title in three years when she demolished Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-2 6-1 to reach the final and extend her winning streak to a jaw-dropping 34 on Thursday. The world number one conceded an early break, but made the most of Kasatkina`s string of unforced errors, peppering court Philippe Chatrier with winners.

Poland's Swiatek, the 2020 champion, has not lost since February and has matched Serena Williams' winning run from 2013, having now lost only two sets in her last four tournaments. She will meet either American teenager Coco Gauff, the 18th seed, or Italy`s Martina Trevisan in Saturday`s showdown.
Swiatek again played with a ribbon in the colours of the Ukrainian flag pinned to her hat against her Russian opponent.

Russian and Belarusian players are allowed to compete at Roland Garros but will have to sit out Wimbledon as All England Club officials barred competitors from the two countries due to Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation". Belarus has been a key staging area for the invasion.
"Pretty special moment. Yeah, I`m really emotional. I`m so grateful to be in this place and you know, be healthy and be able to play my game. It`s amazing and I love playing here," said Swiatek.

"Right after my first year there was COVID and I was not able to see how many Polish people would come. It`s overwhelming. "I try to treat every match the same way. When I realise this is one of the biggest matches of the season, it could stress me out."

Swiatek started with a double fault but held and broke in the second game, only for Kasatkina to break back and level for 2-2. The Russian`s game, however, was riddled with unforced errors and Swiatek collected free points to steal her opponent`s serve again for 4-2. She then won eight points in a row to wrap up the opening set with a crosscourt backhand return that left Kasatkina with her feet stuck on the red dirt.
Swiatek, looking to become the fourth woman since 2000 - after Justine Henin, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova - to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup twice, kept her foot on the gas to take the early lead in the second set.

But Kasatkina, who had lost all their three encounters in straight sets this season, stemmed the bleeding with a hold for 1-1. It was only a brief relief for the world number 20, who was being bludgeoned by Swiatek`s precise and powerful forehands. The top seed won all the remaining games, allowing a sorry Kasatkina only nine points in the second set, and finished it off with an ace.

Ruthless Iga Swiatek destroys Russian Daria Kasatkina to storm into French Open final

India's veteran tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop's inspiring&nbsp;run at Roland Garros concluded on Thursday evening (June 02)&nbsp;as the duo bowed out with a defeat in the men's doubles. In the semis, the Indo-Dutch pair were off to a winning start as they wrapped up the opening set, 6-4, in 36 minutes. From thereon, Arevalo-Roger clawed their way back into the match by pocketing the second and penultimate set 6-3 in 40 minutes.&nbsp; The third and final set went into a tiebreaker where Bopanna-Middelkoop saved two match points, however, they lost&nbsp;the contest eventually.

French Open: Rohan Bopanna-Matwe Middelkoop's campaign ends, duo bow out in men's double semi-finals

Rafael&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;looks to celebrate his 36th birthday on Friday by reaching a 14th French Open final which by his own admission could be the last of his record-breaking career. Nadal, the 13-time champion, faces Germany's Alexander Zverev but is clear his chronic, long-term foot injury has put him on borrowed time.

"The last three months and a half for me, the only thing that I can say is haven't been easy," said the Spaniard after his epic four-set win over old rival Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. "But I have to keep going." Nadal, chasing a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title to move two in front of Djokovic and Roger Federer, is working constantly to find a cure for the foot issue.

"If we are not able to find an improvement or a small solution, then it's becoming super difficult for me. I am just enjoying every day that I have the chance to be here, and without thinking much about what can happen in the future.

- Find solution -

"I'm going to keep fighting to find a solution, but for the moment, we haven't." Nadal's win over defending champion and world number one Djokovic was the 110th of his 17-year Roland Garros career.

He has had to dig deep into his resources to reach his 15th semi-final in the French capital. It took him four hours and 21 minutes to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round in a tie which saw him stretched to five sets for only the third time at the tournament.

Against Djokovic, he needed four hours and 12 minutes, saving two set points in the fourth set to avoid another five-setter.

Djokovic is the man responsible for two of&nbsp;Nadal's three losses at the French Open. With his career-long rival out of the way, and world number two Daniil Medvedev and fourth-ranked 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas eliminated,&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;remains favourite to lift the trophy on Sunday.

Against Zverev, he boasts a 6-3 winning record, capturing four of the pair's five clay court meetings. Zverev, 11 years younger than&nbsp;Nadal, is still searching for a maiden Slam title. He is into a second successive French Open semi-final.

<h2>- 'Supposed to win' -</h2>

He defeated teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals but had to save a match point in a five-set win over Argentina's Sebastian Baez in the second round.

He has also never defeated&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;or Djokovic at the majors. "I'm not 20 or 21 years old anymore; I'm 25. I am at the stage where I want to win, I'm at the stage where I'm supposed to win," admitted the third seed.

In Friday's other semi-final, Marin Cilic takes on Casper Ruud with both men having made the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the first time.

Cilic, 33, and the 2014 US Open champion, is only the fifth active player along with&nbsp;Nadal, Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray to have reached the semi-finals of all four Slams.

Cilic, ranked 23 in the world, is in his first semi-final at the majors since 2018 when he was runner-up to Federer at the Australian Open. Ruud is the first Norwegian man ever to make the last four of a Slam with the eighth-ranked 23-year-old one of the form players on clay.

His testy quarter-final win over 19-year-old Holger Rune was his 65th on clay since the 2020 season. Seven of his eight titles have come on clay. Ruud has a 2-0 edge over Cilic, including their only meeting on the surface in Rome.

Former world number three Cilic knocked out Medvedev in straight sets in the fourth round, without facing a break point, and seventh-ranked Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals on the back of 33 aces and 88 winners.

Only two of his 20 career titles have come on clay courts, the most recent of which was at Istanbul in 2017.

Despite his surprise run to the last-four, where he is comfortably the lowest seed left, Cilic is content to maintain a low profile.

"I really don't mind being under the highlights. I'm just trying to use my opportunities as much as I can during my career every day, every match to give my best," he said.

In Friday's other semi-final, Marin Cilic takes on Casper Ruud with both men having made the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the first time. Cilic, 33, and the 2014 US Open champion, is only the fifth active player along with Nadal, Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray to have reached the semi-finals of all four Slams.

Birthday boy Rafael Nadal aims for 14th French Open final despite future fears

Rafael Nadal and World number 1 Novak Djokovic locked horns with each other in the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open on Wednesday (June 01). The contest between the two legendary players have always been one to cherish for the ardent tennis fans. The same was the case this time around as Nadal beat defending champion Djokovic in a four-set riveting battle,&nbsp;6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4).&nbsp;

Nadal now stands just a couple of steps away from lifting his 14th French Open title after an incredible display against Djokovic. While many termed the Serbian as the favourite ahead of the clash, due to Nadal's foot injury and inconsistent form,&nbsp; the Spaniard saved his best versus the No. 1 ranked player to emerge on top in an engaging battle.

Following the clash,&nbsp;Indian Tennis coach Enrico Piperno analysed the high-voltage clash between Nadal-Djokovic and lauded the former world number one.

On Nadal's foot injury, Piperno said in an&nbsp;interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, "The man is superhuman. Don't know how he does it. To continue playing that sort of level at this age is pretty phenomenal. That explains Rafael Nadal to you. The way he plays, the sort of effort that goes into it, hitting the ground stoke&nbsp;from that far from the baseline is just absolutely phenomenal. He is one of the greatest athletes the planet has ever seen."

'He's one of the greatest athletes....': Enrico Piperno on Rafael Nadal after his win over Novak Djokovic

Rafael Nadal once again proved why beating him at the French Open remains one of the most difficult feats to pull off on a tennis court. The Spaniard defeated world no.1 Djokovic in a thrilling four-setter in Paris to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. It was the 59th meeting between the arch-rivals and Nadal managed to come out on top against the Serbian ace.

It was a draining quarter-final clash between two of the greatest tennis players ever as it lasted for over four hours before Nadal won the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4). Nadal now stands just a couple of steps away from lifting his 14th French Open title after an incredible display against Djokovic.

Djokovic was arguably the favourite against Nadal ahead of the quarterfinal considering the Spaniard's inconsistent form and issues due to injuries. However, Nadal seemed to have saved his best for the Serbian and did little wrong in the quarter-final to claim his 29th win against the world no.1 in a total of 59 meetings between the duo.

'What a battle': Rod Laver, Del Potro & others react as Rafael Nadal beats Novak Djokovic at French Open 2022

World number one Novak Djokovic said he was proud of the fight he put up in another vintage contest against his great rival Rafa Nadal in the French Open quarter-final, admitting on Tuesday that he lost to a better player.
Djokovic, the 35-year-old winner of 20 Grand Slam titles, conceded an early break to Nadal in each of the first three sets and had two set points in the fourth. But the Spaniard clinched the four-hour, 12-minute contest in the tiebreaker.

"I gave my best," Djokovic told reporters after his 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(4) defeat. "I know I could have played better. I`m proud of fighting and staying till the last shot.

"I lost to a better player today. Had my chances. Didn`t use them. That`s it. You know, over four hours` battle, and I have to accept this defeat."

Djokovic defeated Nadal, who has won 13 of his men`s record 21 Grand Slam titles on the Parisian clay, in last year`s semi-finals at Roland Garros before lifting the Musketeers` Cup for a second time in his career.

Nadal arrived in Paris this year after two injuries that had hampered his preparations and came into Tuesday`s contest following a tough five-set win in his last match. But he still found the stamina to beat Djokovic in their 59th career meeting.

In contrast, Djokovic picked up an ATP 1000 title in Rome before arriving at Roland Garros and had not lost a set in his previous rounds at the clay-court Grand Slam.

The Serb congratulated Nadal for the victory and said he was not surprised by his opponent`s physical fitness during the long battle under the lights of Court Philippe Chatrier.

"He was a better player I think in important moments," Djokovic said. "Started very well. I didn`t start so great ... I was gaining momentum as I was coming back in the second set, managed to win the second set, and I thought, `Okay, I`m back in the game.

"But then he had another two, three fantastic games at the beginning of the third. He was just able to take his tennis to another level in those, particularly moments at the beginning of all sets, actually, except the fourth.

"I had my chances. Just one or two shots. Could have taken me into a fifth. Then it`s really anybody`s match. But again, he showed why he`s a great champion. Staying there mentally tough and finishing the match the way he did. Congrats to him and his team. No doubt he deserved it."

Had my chances but lost to a better player, says Novak Djokovic after going down against Rafael Nadal

World number one Iga Swiatek shook off some early nerves to extend her winning series to a staggering 33 as she beat American Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-2 to book her spot in the French Open semi-finals on Wednesday. Swiatek, who turned 21 on Tuesday, is on the longest unbeaten run in the women`s tour since Serena Williams bagged 34 victories in succession in 2013.

The Polish player, gunning for a second title in three years at Roland Garros, appeared a tad shaky in the initial games before marching past the 11th seed to set up a meeting with Russian Daria Kasatkina for a place in Saturday`s final. The 2020 champion is bidding to become the fourth player since 2000 to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup multiple times after Justine Henin, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

"She was playing very low so to be good I had to be low on my legs. It was the key and I`m pretty happy I was playing with a good dynamic to push her back a little bit," said Swiatek on a sunbathed, yet windswept court Philippe Chatrier. "Sometimes stress is a positive thing, it`s going to make you more active and more tense so you can play a good performance. So I tried to use it that way."

Two days after dropping her first set of the tournament, Swiatek got off to a fast start, stealing Pegula`s serve with a crosscourt forehand winner. But unforced errors immediately crept up in her game and she was immediately broken back and showed early signs of nerves.

The Pole, however, went up a break again to lead 4-3 before holding and setting up set points in the ninth game. Pegula did her a favour by sending a routine forehand wide on the second. Another of those gave Swiatek a break for 3-1 in the second set and she kept her grip, only squandering three match points before wrapping it up on Pegula`s serve with a booming backhand winner down the line.

So I tried to use it that way." But unforced errors immediately crept up in her game and she was immediately broken back and showed early signs of nerves.

German third seed Alexander Zverev capitalised on an error-filled performance from Carlos Alcaraz to tame the high-flying teenage Spaniard 6-4 6-4 4-6 7-6(7) on Tuesday and reach a second straight semi-final at the French Open.
This was the first time the 25-year-old Zverev defeated a top-10 opponent at a Grand Slam in 12 attempts and his victory came against a player who came into the contest having won 14 consecutive matches.

Zverev, who lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2021 semi-final, had a 2-1 head-to-head lead against Alcaraz but his opponent had won their most recent meeting -- the only one on clay -- this month in the final of the ATP Masters in Madrid.

Alcaraz made 56 unforced errors as Zverev saved a set point in the fourth set tiebreak before converting his second match point to set up a meeting against either world number one Novak Djokovic or 13-time French Open champion Rafa Nadal.

"At the end of the day I knew I had to play absolutely my best tennis today from the start," a beaming Zverev said on court. "He kept coming back.

"He is going to win this tournament a lot of times not just once. I hope I can win it before he starts beating us all and I have no chance."

On a sun-bathed Court Philippe Chatrier, Zverev brought his best form to the match, serving strongly and remaining solid in the rallies against his athletic opponent who chased down almost everything that came his side of the net.
But Alcaraz seemed too eager to impose himself on the match early and it resulted in an array of unforced errors from the young Spaniard.

A couple of mistakes from Alcaraz in the fifth game opened the door for Zverev and he pounced to get the first break, which proved enough for him to bag the opening set.

Alcaraz, bubbling with energy and with most of the boisterous crowd on his side, became increasingly frustrated, throwing his hands up and muttering to himself but he could not find a way to rein in his unforced errors.

He committed 16 in each of the opening two sets and a break in the seventh game of the second gave the German the advantage which he turned into a 2-0 lead in the match.

Alcaraz`s fearless attitude bore fruit in the third set when he turned on his magic to break Zverev`s delivery in the 10th game and get a foothold in the match.

With Alcaraz`s fightback gaining momentum, Zverev stayed calm on his service games and, with a stunning backhand down the line on the run and an Alcaraz double fault, the German got his nose ahead.

The Spaniard would, however, not go down without a fight and with Zverev serving for the match, Alcaraz converted a breakpoint with a backhand winner to get the set back on serve and get the crowd back on their feet.

Zverev saved a set point and then converted his second matchpoint with a breathtaking backhand service return, letting out a huge roar after completing the victory after three hours and 18 minutes.

"For me obviously when it is shady and much slower it is not perfect for me," Zverev added. "I did not get broken once when it was sunny. The match was turning his way, I`m extremely happy I won the tiebreak."

Alexander Zverev outlasts Carlos Alcaraz to enter semi-finals at French Open 2022

Zheng Qinwen was utterly disappointed and felt she could have done a lot more than what she managed to pull off on the court against world no.1 Iga Swiatek at the French Open 2022 on Monday. Quinwen was up against arguably the best women's tennis player in the world at the moment in the fourth round of the French Open and the Chinese teenager was aiming to give her all in a bid to create a massive upset. However, it wasn't meant to be as she suffered from menstrual cramps which derailed her bid to put up a fight against the world no.1.

Qinwen started off well and took the first set off Swiatek as she looked on the way to staging a massive upset in Paris. The Chinese teenager won the first set in a tiebreak before suffering in pain due to cramps. The Chinese star had to opt for a medical time out midway through the second set when she was 3-0 down against Swiatek.

Quinwen revealed she didn't feel the pain during the first set but the cramps became unbearable in the second set. She was spotted getting her back massaged by the medical support staff before leaving for the locker room and returning with her right thigh strapped.

However, Swiatek had taken control of the game by then and was in her groove. The Polish world no.1 wasted no time in clinching the second set 6-0 before taking the deciding third set 6-2 to end Qinwen's campaign at the French Open 2022.

Disappointed after being robbed of a chance to perform due to menstrual cramps, the Chinese star revealed she was experiencing a lot of pain in her stomach and wished she could be a man on the court.

"Yeah, the leg was also tough. That compared to the stomach was easy... I cannot play my tennis, (my) stomach was too painful," Quinwen told reporters.

"It`s just girls' things, you know. The first day is always so tough and then I have to do sport and I always have so much pain in the first day. And I couldn`t go against my nature. I wish I can be a man on court, but I cannot in that moment... I really wish I can be (a) man (so) that I don`t have to suffer from this," she added.

The 19-year-old is currently ranked 70 in the world and has been impressive at a young age. She made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open earlier this year and there has been no looking back ever since for the Chinese teenager. Quinwen said she enjoyed playing against world no.1 Swiatek but would have liked to run better and play with more intensity if not for the cramps.

"If I don't talk about today, I`m happy with my performance (on) this run. And to play against the number one in the world, I felt I really enjoyed (it) on the court," said Quinwen.

"If I don't have my stomach (pain) I think I could enjoy more, like to run better and to hit harder, to give more effort on court. It`s a pity that I couldn`t give what I want to give today. I just want (it so that) next time I play against her, I (am in) perfect shape," she added.

Croatian Marin Cilic did not put a foot wrong as he crushed Russia`s world number two Daniil Medvedev 6-2 6-3 6-2 in a lopsided contest on Monday to return to the French Open quarter-finals after a gap of four years. The 2014 U.S. Open champion, seeded 20th, dominated proceedings from the start and finished off the contest in an hour and 45 minutes to reach the last eight stage on the Parisian clay for the third time in his career.

Medvedev came into the match having won all three previous meetings against the 33-year-old Croatian but cut a sorry figure under the lights on Court Philippe Chatrier in their first contest on clay.

"It was absolutely a fantastic match from the first point to the last," Cilic said in his interview on court.

"I enjoyed the atmosphere, enjoyed the night session here, played incredible tennis, one of the best matches of my career from start to finish."

Such was the Croatian`s domination that he did not face a break point and will next meet another Russian in seventh seed Andrey Rublev for a place in the semi-finals.

Cilic played aggressively, pinning Medvedev behind the baseline and advancing to the net at every opportunity as the Russian failed to find any zing behind his flat groundstrokes in the cooler night conditions.

Unable to find a solution to Cilic`s pinpoint winners, Medvedev kept shaking his head and also poured out his frustration at the chair umpire over what he felt was very little time to rest during changeovers.

Medvedev`s form on the night was more reminiscent of his four consecutive first-round exits at Roland Garros before he made the quarter-finals last year.

Cilic won four consecutive games from 2-2 to bag the opening set in 31 minutes and another break in the sixth game was enough for him to take the second set.

Australian Open finalist Medvedev, who won the 2021 U.S. Open, then took a lengthy toilet break but served a double fault on his first point after returning to court.

Another double fault in that opening game led to Medvedev getting broken. The 26-year-old`s problems with double faults and unforced errors continued as Cilic broke him again to jump into a 4-0 third-set lead.

There was no way back for Medvedev, who briefly rose to world number one earlier this year, and Cilic converted his second match point when the Russian found the net with a backhand return.

"When I`m playing my best tennis, everything is working out, from the serve, return, movement. These last 10-15 days were great for me - great training, great matches, very consistent tennis," Cilic added.

"Against guys like Daniil you have to be able to sustain that high level throughout the match and if you give him a chance, he`s going to be back. So I was really focused to keep going and definitely extremely pleased with that."

French Open 2022: Marin Cilic knocks out Russian second seed Daniil Medvedev to set up Rublev clash

Unseeded Italian Martina Trevisan maintained her impressive form as she surged into the French Open semi-finals with a 6-2 6-7(3) 6-3 defeat of Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez on Tuesday. Trevisan, who will face American Coco Gauff in the last four, had all the answers as she dominated most of the match against a below-par Fernandez who struggled to repeat the form that took her to last year`s U.S. Open final.
The world number 59 could have won in straight sets but wavered when serving for the match at 5-4 in the second as fellow left-hander Fernandez dug deep to stay in the contest.

Fernandez comfortably claimed the tiebreak to become the first player to take a set off Trevisan at Roland Garros this year, but it was to prove only a brief respite. Trevisan raced into a 3-0 lead in the deciding set and won a fiercely-contested fourth game to earn a double break.

Seventeenth seed Fernandez, who was treated for a foot injury in the first set, was never going to go away quietly though and broke serve twice herself to claw back to 3-5. The nerves were obvious as Trevisan again served for the match but this time she would not be denied as she secured the win with an angled crosscourt forehand.

"I felt a bit nervous on the match point (in the second set) but it was normal to feel that emotion because this was only my second Grand Slam quarter-final," the 28-year-old Italian, who won her first WTA title in Rabat this month, said. "I came here with a lot of energy and to put all my emotion on the court."

CLAYCOURT EXPERTISE
Trevisan displayed her claycourt expertise two years ago in Paris when she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals. Now she has gone further and will be confident against another teenager, 18th seed Gauff, in the semis. She beat Gauff during her 2020 run to the quarters.

"I like the fight. I like the adrenaline. I like the moment before I get in the court," added Trevisan. She is bidding to emulate compatriot Francesca Schiavone, who won the title in 2010, and the way she is playing suggests she will take some stopping in that quest. Trevisan, surprisingly making only her third main draw appearance in Paris, broke serve in the opening game.

Fernandez winced in the fifth game and needed treatment on her left foot but after resuming, slipped 5-2 down as Trevisan fired a forehand winner down the line. The 19-year-old Canadian earned a break at the start of the second set but Trevisan re-established control and broke twice to hold a 5-4 lead with her serve to come.

Fernandez showed great calmness, however, to take the match into a tiebreak which she claimed with ease.
She could have no complaints, however, as Trevisan seized her opportunity in the decider and held her nerve for her 10th successive victory.

French Open: Italy's Martina Trevisan beats Leylah Fernandez to reach semi-finals

The action continues in the 2022 French Open as World number one Novak Djokovic is set to lock horns with Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the high-voltage quarter-final on Wednesday (June 01). Both the players have been in top form in this year's edition and will give a tough fight to each other to proceed to the semi-finals. Talking about Djokovic, the Serbian hasn't even dropped a set in his journey so far at the Roland Garros and looks determined to retain the French Open title after missing out on playing the Australian Open, early this year, due to the Covid-19 vaccination row. On the other hand, Nadal had won the title for four years in a row before losing the semi-finals of the 2021 edition to Djokovic -- only his third defeat on clay court since his debut. Hence, revenge will be on his mind when he takes on his arch-rival. Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic, Live streaming: When and where to watch French Open's high-voltage QF match?

Rafa Nadal overcame a sluggish start and a stiff challenge from Canadian ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime with an enthralling 3-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3 win on Sunday to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final with world number one Novak Djokovic. This was only the third time in his 112 matches that Nadal was taken to the fifth set at Roland Garros and he ensured he kept his blemish-free record intact, wrapping up the win in four hours and 21 minutes to wild applause from the crowd.

Nadal will hope he can recover in time from the gruelling contest for his next outing, where the reigning champion awaits for their 59th career showdown. The Spaniard, who will turn 36 on Friday, has lifted the Musketeers` Cup a record 13 times but was ousted in the semi-finals last year by Djokovic.

Djokovic completed his victory against Diego Schwartzman on Court Suzanne Lenglen shortly before his long-time rival started his match and the Serb is yet to lose a set in his four rounds.

"We know each other well," Nadal said of Djokovic. "We have a lot of history together. He came here after winning in Rome. For me, it was not an ideal situation to arrive here. But here we are. We are at Roland Garros, it is my favourite place without a doubt.

"The only thing I can tell you, I am going to be focused and try my best. The only thing I can guarantee is that I am going to fight until the end," added the Spaniard who converted only six of his 22 breakpoint chances in the match.
The clash on Court Philippe Chatrier was the second meeting between Nadal and Auger-Aliassime but the first since Toni Nadal began working with the Canadian in 2021.

`Uncle Toni` was part of Nadal`s team for the majority of his record 21 Grand Slam singles titles, and the buildup to the contest was dominated by talk of the 61-year-old coaching Auger-Aliassime against his nephew.

Toni Nadal did not sit in the Canadian`s box and chose a neutral seat and he would have been pleased with Auger-Aliassime`s performance during the opening set. The 21-year-old showed immense grit and incredible athleticism to win the opening set, earning applause from Nadal on one point when he jumped to make a backhand overhead volley.

Nadal wasted six breakpoint opportunities in the first set but cut down on his errors in the second and made his chance count in the eighth game to break his opponent and level the contest at 1-1.

Nadal got the early break of serve in the third when Auger-Aliassime missed a couple of overhead volleys and another break in the seventh sealed the set and a 2-1 lead for the left-hander. But the Canadian refused to go away.

After an early trade of service breaks, Auger-Aliassime broke Nadal`s delivery a second time to take the contest to a deciding fifth set. The last time Nadal played a five-setter at Roland Garros was in the 2013 semi-final when he beat Djokovic.

The Spaniard still had enough left in his tank to clinch the deciding break against Auger-Aliassime in the eighth game and then held his serve, sealing the contest on his first match point with a winner. "It was a very important victory for me without doubt," Nadal said.

French Open 2022: Rafael Nadal beats Felix Auger-Aliassime in thriller to set up Novak Djokovic date

Teenage sensation Holger Rune outmuscled world number four and last-year's French Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5 3-6 6-3 6-4 on Monday to move into the quarter-finals with his biggest Grand Slam win to date.

The Dane, who has improved more than 350 places in the world rankings in the past 15 months, joins fellow 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight, the first time two teenagers made that stage at a Grand Slam since 1994. "I have an unbelievable feeling. I was so nervous in the end," said a beaming Rune, playing in his first French Open. "I was very nervous. I told myself to keep at it and play my plan. I mean it is so great to still be here."

"Part of the tactic to play as aggressive as possible when he gets shorter balls he attacks them. I really liked playing the drop shots and it worked out pretty good so I am happy." Fourth seed Tsitsipas, hunting for his first ever Grand Slam, started well and broke the Dane to go 3-1 up when Rune`s drop shot was not short enough and the Greek whipped a cross-court winner past him.

Rune, however, broke him twice, clinching the set with a disputed line call that went in his favour. Tsitsipas did not lose his composure and saved three consecutive break points in the very first game of the second set, powering back to seal it.

He did slip up though midway through the third when two double faults and two unforced errors handed Rune a key break and the teenager went 2-1 up in sets when Tsitsipas did well to return a Rune smash but then fired a topspin forehand into the net. The Dane succeeded in getting Tsitsipas out of his comfort zone on the baseline, sending his tall opponent to the net with drop points and stretching him wide off the court with deep cross-court balls.

Rune had three break points at the start of the fourth which the Greek saved but the teen made amends on his opponent`s next two service game to open up a 5-2 lead with a scorching backhand down the line.
He did show some nerves in the end as Tsitsipas fought back to 5-4 and even had break points but Rune made sure of his big win on the first match point just as the clock ticked past the three hour mark.

Tuesday`s highly-anticipated French Open quarter-final between world number one Novak Djokovic and 13-time champion Rafa Nadal has been scheduled to be played during the controversial night session despite the Spaniard expressing reservations against it. The night session, for which Amazon Prime has exclusive broadcasting rights in France, starts at 9 p.m. local time and was introduced for the first time at the 2021 edition of the claycourt major.

"I don`t like night sessions on clay. I am very clear with that," Nadal, who enjoys a near mythical status at Roland Garros, where he has a statue erected in his honour, told reporters last week. "I don`t like to play on clay during the night because humidity is higher, the ball is slower and there can be very heavy conditions especially when it`s cold. "I think that makes a big difference on the way you play tennis on clay during the night and during the day."

Teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev have both said they would not want their quarter-final, also on Tuesday, to be scheduled during the night session. The match between the Spaniard and the German third seed was put as the third one on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The Djokovic-Nadal rivalry is such a hot bill that usual rules tend not to apply when the two heavyweights face each other at the French Open. Last year, the COVID-19 curfew was pushed back to allow fans to stay longer at Roland Garros when Djokovic knocked Nadal out in the semi-finals and this year, the match will be broadcast for free on Prime Video, organisers said.

Asked about his choice during a TV interview Djokovic said with a smile: "I can only say that Rafa and I would make different applications." "As top players, we do have requests, but those requests are not always accepted," he told reporters. "The tournament director, along with TV, broadcasters, I think in the end of the day that`s who decides... TV, whether they want your match, day or night.

"You just have to adjust to that. Obviously, depending on who you play, sometimes it`s favourable to play night; sometimes day. There is no standard or no formula that works always."

French Open 2022: Novak Djokovic v Rafael Nadal put on night session despite Spaniard's reluctance

Carlos Alcaraz pummelled Karen Khachanov into submission in a 6-1 6-4 6-4 victory on Sunday to reach the French Open quarter-finals and stretch his winning run to 14 matches. The 19-year-old, who has taken the tennis world by storm this year, became the youngest male player in 29 years to reach two Grand Slam quarter-finals after also making the U.S. Open last eight.

"It has been a great match from my side. I played really well from the beginning until the end of the match," he said.

"I knew I had to be really focused from the beginning. I expected the level that I played. I started really well and I kept the level for the whole match. I am very happy with it."

He needed just 29 minutes to storm through the first set with his special mix of raw power, punishing forehands and deft drop shots that made his 26-year-old opponent look old. Khachanov, the world number 25 and a quarter-finalist in Paris in 2019, managed to hold serve early in the second set but the Spaniard broke him at 3-3, and never looked back.

The pair traded breaks midway through the third set on a chilly and overcast evening in the French capital but it was Alcaraz who pulled ahead with yet another break after an eye-popping `tweener` lob over the tall Russian.

He wobbled a bit at the end, wasting five match points on Khachanov`s serve, but that only delayed the inevitable by one game, as he sealed victory on his serve minutes later.

World number six Alcaraz, who now has a 19-1 win-loss record on clay this season after winning back-to-back titles in Barcelona and Madrid in April and May, will next face third seed Alexander Zverev, who beat qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets.

"Sasha (Zverev) is playing a great game. He is real aggressive and it will be a tough match," Alcaraz said. "Best of five against him will be tough. He has beaten great players in Grand Slams."

"I like to play tough, close matches so it is going to be a good match."

Should the stars align for Alcaraz, he could eventually take on either world number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic or 13-time Roland Garros winner Rafael Nadal in the last four.
