Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi is teaming up with director Balaji for their third collaboration, with the new film titled ‘Bata’. The makers have unveiled the first look, featuring Sethupathi in a stylish retro avatar with a thick gold chain, sunglasses, a red printed shirt and a cigarette.

The first-look poster has sparked curiosity as the makers continue to keep the film’s story and Sethupathi’s character under wraps. Filmmaker Atlee also shared the poster, calling the reunion a banger.

‘Bata’ marks the third collaboration between Vijay Sethupathi and Balaji after ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom’ and ‘Seethakaathi’. The film is scheduled to release on October 1, 2026.

<p>With hardly 8 months to go for the highly anticipated assembly election in Tamil Nadu, posters have surfaced in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore, urging actor Rajinikanth to take the political plunge. “Change in Political culture and government; Party and government are separate entities - if not now, never!” the posters carried some of Rajini’s own slogans. The poster mentions the name of a fan, who conceptualised it and posted it.</p>

<p>It was with high expectations that Rajinikanth had called for a Press meet in Chennai on March 12, 2020, however, the actor only outlined his vision for ‘cleaning up politics’ and refused to commit on his own political foray. “I have never even thought of becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu or sitting in the Assembly and speaking. It is not even in my blood. I want a new wave, new power and new blood to go and seize power in the assembly and Rajini will be a bridge for this” he said.<br />

Rajini had said that his prospective party would have only limited booth-level committee roles, so as to prevent them from missing power following victory, as was the case with mainstream parties. It was with high expectations that Rajinikanth had called for a Press meet in Chennai on March 12, 2020, however, the actor only outlined his vision for ‘cleaning up politics’ and refused to commit on his own political foray. “I have never even thought of becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu or sitting in the Assembly and speaking. It is not even in my blood. I want a new wave, new power and new blood to go and seize power in the assembly and Rajini will be a bridge for this” he said. Rajini had said that his prospective party would have only limited booth-level committee roles, so as to prevent them from missing power following victory, as was the case with mainstream parties. He had visualised a party wherein 60-65 per cent persons would be below 50. “Youth with an adequate qualification and a decent social standing. With the multiplexes remaining shut, the streaming platform Amazon Prime Video is going all out in a bid to revolutionize the way we might watch films in the future. The streaming portal have announced seven films straight-to-OTT release.<br />
Jyothika though feels that the thrill of watching a film in a theatre is unmatched. "As for producers and actors, the theatre is an emotion for us. We have grown up seeing films in theatres, of actors we have been fans of. Today, when we do a film, people clap, applaud and whistle. That`s not matchable at all," she said.<br />

"But saying that, small films need a wider reach. We also need the film to be seen. I have done seven to eight films in the last four or five years, I do see a very small audience going to watch it. It`s overwhelming to see hitting 10 million views in two days, and the kind of response we are getting. It`s a big boon. OTT is a big boon for small films," she added.<br />

The actress who was part of the virtual press conference stated that the narrative of women in cinema is also changing.<br />
"There has been huge change over the last five to seven years. There are a lot of women-centric films that are being made and doing good. In the South, 90 per cent women-centric films that have released have done well as compared to male-centric films, where it is 50/50. So I think women-centric films always come with good content and we work thrice as much harder to get it right," she said.<br />

"I think the utmost amount of hard work is now having a platform all over India and moreover in the South. One thing which is not picking up is as woman are ageing, we still don`t have more of 35-plus heroines, who are ruling the roost. There are more films made with the younger ones," she observed.<br />

Jyothika added that it would be pathbreaking if more films are made with women above 40 years of age as protagonists. "I think that it would be pathbreaking to see all the women above 40, 45 and 50 -- the way it is in Hollywood -- if there are more films made on them," she said.</p>

<p>Vijay starrer 'Bigil' is facing troubles getting a digital release. A court in Hyderabad has issued an interim injunction order barring the digital release of the Tamil movie and its Telugu version 'Whistle' after a petition was filed by Hyderabad-based filmmaker Nandi Chinni Kumar, who had sought orders to stop its theatrical, satellite and digital release.<br />

The film was scheduled to be screened on Amazon Prime Video later this month.<br />

"The court had restrained Amazon Prime from uploading and streaming the film `Bigil/Whistle` on YouTube or other modes of the broadcasting system until further orders," Kumar told a news agency on Thursday.</p>

<p>Claiming that he had acquired exclusive copyrights for making a film on the life of slum-footballer Akhilesh Paul, Kumar had given complaints of copyright infringement against makers of 'Bigil' to the Telangana Cinema Writers Association, the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the regional officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Chennai.</p>

<p>Kumar filed a lawsuit against the film`s director Atlee and actor Vijay, apart from the film`s producers, stating they have violated a copyright agreement which he had signed with Akhilesh Paul.</p>

<p>He claimed that there are striking similarities between the main character and plot events of 'Bigil' and the exclusive life story copyright of Akhilesh Paul.</p>

<p>Kumar had earlier served a legal notice to Akhilesh Paul, Hindi movie 'Jhund' makers Nagraj Manjule, Bhushan Kumar (who is also CMD of T-Series), Savita Raj, and megastar Amitabh Bachchan. He alleged cheating, criminal intimidation, breach of contract and copyright infringement.</p>

<p>Kumar who is an independent filmmaker, also sent notice to Slum Soccer founder Vijay Barse, on whose life the film is said to be based on.</p>

<p>Alleging that he was cheated and criminally intimidated by makers of the film, Kumar plans to move the court to stop the screening of the movie in theatres, television and all digital platforms.</p>

<p>The filmmaker claims that he bought exclusive rights in 2017 to make a movie on the life of Akhilesh Paul, a slum soccer player who was the Indian captain at the Homeless World Cup.</p>

<p>He claimed to have registered the story and script with Telangana Cinema Writers Association on June 11, 2018.</p>

<p>Southern superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan may have decided to join politics, but Popular Tamil cinema star Ajith Kumar has stated that he has no political ambitions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the &nbsp;'Viswasam' star said that he ensured that there are no political undertones to any of films. Earlier there were reports that the actor's recent film was pro-government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Everyone knows that I am determined that there are no political colours attached to me in my personal capacity or in my films. My job is to act in movies," he said.</p>

<p>The actor, whose films are known to command good openings, recalled he had earlier disbanded his fan clubs to ensure that there were no political colours on him or on them.</p>

<p>"Even after this decision of mine, there are reports linking my name or that of my fans with certain political happenings. These will create an apprehension among people that I have now got political ambitions, and that too with the (general) elections around" he said.</p>

<p>Ajith Kumar has a good fan following and his Pongal release 'Viswasam' is said to be giving a tough run to superstar Rajinikanth's action flick 'Petta', also released during the festive season, in box office collections in the domestic market.<br />
<br />
Tamil cinema has always been identified with two stars on either sides during the respective eras, starting with the icons, the late M G Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan, followed by Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, and now Vijay and Ajith Kumar.</p>

"My best link with politics is casting my vote as a citizen by standing in the queue," he said, adding that he has never asked his fans to vote for or support a particular political party.</p>

Meanwhile, DMK leader Pazha.Karuppiah, who has played the antagonist's role in the film, wanted to know how scenes of a movie could be deleted after the Censor Board had cleared it.<br />

Reports suggested that certain scenes show grinder, mixers and fans being burnt, seen as an obvious reference to the late Jayalalithaa's flagship schemes of providing these items free of cost, in line with an electoral promise in 2011.<br />

AIADMK workers staged a protest outside a theatre in Madurai demanding that certain scenes be removed. A show was also cancelled. Workers said they would not allow the film to be screened till "derogatory" scenes and dialogues were removed, the police said.<br />

At some movie halls in Coimbatore and Chennai, banners of the film and that of Vijay were damaged allegedly by AIADMK supporters. Some AIADMK workers staged a sit-in at a theatre in Coimbatore seeking a ban on the film.<br />

On a character whose name has purported reference to Jayalalithaa, Jayakumar said it was an attempt at "maligning" the late party chief and sought legal action against the crew.<br />

He also wondered if the filmmakers could have come up with such a flick when Jayalalithaa was alive and said her death has "emboldened" them.<br />

"If they (Vijay) had spelt out their policies, ideology and if the movie is reflective of that, it is fine. But in order to project themselves, to trample over others' sentiments and hurting them, that is not acceptable," he said.<br />

Referring to the films of matinee idol and AIADMK founder, former chief minister M G Ramachandran, Jayakumar said the late leader's films never carried such content.<br />
In an apparent reference to MGR's elevation from a film star to chief minister, he said "not all can become MGR."<br />

Lashing out at Vijay, Information Minister Kadambur C Raju said "This is not good for a growing actor like Vijay."<br />

"The matter has come to the government's notice. We will advise them to remove the scenes. If they do it themselves it's fine, otherwise, we will decide the next course of action," he said.<br />

He, however, denied that a particular woman character's name had reference to Jayalalithaa.<br />

"Komalavalli (the character's name) is not Amma's name at all. In 2002-03 when a Congressman referred to her by this name, Amma herself said this was not her name and that she had not even done any such film role," he said.<br />

However, the film was produced with "commercial intent and they have to do something" to make it a success, he added.<br />

"You know who the producers are," he said, in an apparent referrence to Sun Pictures, owned by the Maran brothers of the DMK's extended first family.<br />

"I was told that the free grinder, mixie are burnt. If they had burnt free colour TV also we can say that there is a sense of objectivity," he added.<br />
